Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is a lavish remake of the 2004 stealth classic, not a new chapter in the series. It rebuilds the presentation and adds a more contemporary control option while preserving the original’s story, characters, voice acting and music. The result, as critics have described it, is a visually impressive and unusually faithful return whose strengths—and some of its old friction—come from keeping the familiar game intact.
What is Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater?
Delta remakes Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, the 2004 game set at the beginning of the series’ chronology. Its Cold War-era story follows Naked Snake, later known as Big Boss, on a mission built around espionage and survival. PlayStation describes it as a story-driven survival stealth-action game and says newcomers can start here. (Konami’s product page; PlayStation’s game page.)

This is not a mechanically identical remaster. Konami has rebuilt the graphics and audio presentation, and PlayStation identifies Unreal Engine 5 as the game’s engine. The remake retains the original’s core structure and identity while changing how it looks, sounds and can be controlled.
What changed—and what stayed the same?
A new presentation for a familiar jungle
The remake’s most immediate change is its visual treatment of the jungle, characters and combat encounters. PC Gamer praised the dense environmental recreation and visual effects, including the foliage and boss-fight presentation. TechRadar also described the game as visually strong in its PS5 Pro review. These are reviewers’ assessments, not a measured comparison of image quality or performance across platforms. (PC Gamer’s review; TechRadar’s review.)
#1 Best Overall
- ERA: THE 1960'S BITTLE OF IDEOLOGIES: Przeżyj historię jako zimna wojna i zmiany krajobrazu geopolitycznego
- GAME:TRUST INSTINCT BATTLE: Outsmart enemies with camouflage, short circuit battle, stalking, interviewing, climbing, hunting and injury treatment
- SETTING: BATTLE OF REPADS JOUNGLES: Measure yourself with the environment where traps catch enemies and prey, threats law in the shadow, and noises alert predators
PlayStation says the story, characters, voice acting and music are unchanged. The remake’s goal was therefore not to rewrite Snake Eater, but to bring its existing experience into a modern presentation. Producer Noriaki Okamura described the intent as “modernizing the gameplay only where it was really needed” while preserving the original as faithfully as possible. (PlayStation.Blog, 12 February 2025.)
Two control styles, one demanding stealth game
New Style uses a more contemporary over-the-shoulder third-person view. Legacy Style aims to recreate the original game’s feel, including its camera and control approach. The choice matters because stealth depends on precise movement and reading the space around Snake. Konami Creative Producer Yuji Korekado put it plainly: “Metal Gear is a stealth game, so it’s crucial for players to be able to make precise movements.” (PlayStation.Blog, 22 August 2025.)
PC Gamer found the updated controls more modern while noting that the game still demands the series’ characteristic precision. That balance is central to the remake: a more familiar camera option can ease the transition, but it does not turn the game into a conventional action shooter.

- ERA: THE 1960'S BATTLE OF IDEOLOGIES: Relive history as the Cold War and geo-political landscape change
- GAMEPLAY: SURVIVAL BATTLE OF INSTINCTS: Outsmart enemies with camouflage, close-quarters combat, stalking, interrogating, climbing, hunting and treating injuries
- SETTING: THE JUNGLE BATTLE OF REPTILES: Pit yourself against an environment where traps catch enemies and prey, threats lurk in the shadows and noises alert predators
How does the survival stealth play?
Delta’s appeal still rests on observing enemies, choosing a route and managing the consequences of getting spotted or hurt. Camouflage, close-quarters combat (CQC), gadgets, hunting and gathering, traps and environmental awareness all contribute to survival. Rather than relying on a single stealth meter or a simple cover system, the game asks players to think about how Snake moves and what the surrounding terrain makes possible. (PlayStation’s game page.)

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →That design gives encounters a deliberate, tactical pace, but some of its procedures can feel dated beside the new presentation. PC Gamer specifically criticized the multi-step process of selecting remedies to treat wounds, which can recur during action. That is one reviewer’s complaint rather than a universal verdict, but it points to the remake’s larger tradeoff: preserving the original systems also preserves their interruptions and demands.
Is it too faithful to the original?
For PC Gamer, the fidelity is a virtue: the remake remains devoted to what made Snake Eater work while modernizing its controls and visual presentation. TechRadar likewise found it faithful and visually strong, but argued that its closeness to the original leaves it with little distinct identity of its own. (PC Gamer; TechRadar.)

- SETTING: THE JUNGLE BATTLE OF REPTILES: Pit yourself against an environment where traps catch enemies and prey, threats lurk in the shadows and noises alert predators
That tension is also the clearest way to decide whether the remake is for you. If the appeal is revisiting one of the series’ defining stealth adventures with a new audiovisual treatment and a modern camera option, its restraint is the point. If you want a substantially rewritten story, redesigned systems or a new interpretation of the game, the fidelity may feel limiting rather than reassuring.

- PLAY EXPERIENCE: SURVIVAL FIGHT OF INSTINCTS: Outwit opponents with methods such as camouflage, melee, sneak, interrogation, climbing, hunting and treating wounds

PlayStation’s US store page lists Standard and Digital Deluxe editions and notes DualSense features on PS5. The available platform information does not establish comparative frame rates, image quality or performance parity; those should not be inferred from the game’s shared release date.
Should you play it if you already played Snake Eater?
If you loved the original and want to experience its jungle, characters and stealth encounters in a rebuilt presentation, Delta offers a clear reason to return. New Style gives returning players a different camera and control feel, while Legacy Style is there for those who want a closer approximation of the original approach. The story and performance remain familiar, so the remake’s value depends more on how much you want to revisit that experience than on discovering a new one.
If you have never played Snake Eater, the game’s placement at the start of the saga’s chronology and PlayStation’s newcomer guidance make it a reasonable entry point. Just expect a survival stealth game with deliberate movement and some systems that retain the original’s procedural feel, rather than a fully modern redesign.
