There is no verified, universal best-to-worst ranking for Metal Slug: Awakening in Season 8. The most useful current guide is a dated, mode-aware comparison: Pocket Gamer’s September 2, 2026 character list is a broad editorial tier list from version 1.29.2, while the later S8 update added Thea and new Light Sniper Gun variants. Use the placements below as a starting point, not an official or tested verdict.

What this tier list can—and cannot—tell you

This guide is dated October 8, 2026. It distinguishes a published character tier list from an up-to-date assessment of every character and weapon: no consulted source establishes a validated S8 best-in-slot ranking across modes. The publisher’s announcements confirm what was added, not which additions are strongest.

Pocket Gamer’s September 2 list identifies version 1.29.2 and includes Mulan, but places a large group of characters in S tier rather than ordering them from strongest to weakest. It also notes that playstyle and team synergy affect a character’s value. Treat its labels as editorial opinion, not game-publisher guidance. See Pocket Gamer’s tier list.

TechBloat’s May 19, 2026 article describes a broader rubric covering campaign, challenge stages, boss fights, co-op, and late-game score pushing. Its criteria are useful for comparing options, but its placements predate S8 and should not be presented as current-season rankings. Read TechBloat’s list and stated criteria.

Character tiers: the latest dated list available here

Pocket Gamer’s version 1.29.2 list, updated September 2, 2026, places these characters in S tier. The source does not order them within that tier, so the names below are not a best-to-worst sequence.

  • Valke
  • Li Ji
  • Ophelia
  • Thea
  • Red Tassel
  • Zero
  • Aydan
  • Shadow
  • Alessio
  • Horae
  • Lyla
  • Scarlett
  • Trevor Spacey
  • Kukik
  • Saya
  • Mulan
  • Joe
  • Martina
  • Leona
  • Lilith
  • Phoenix
  • Tarma Roving
  • Nadia Cassel

A wide S tier is evidence that the list considers many characters strong; it is not enough to decide which one is best for your account. Pocket Gamer says players can deploy up to three characters, making team fit relevant alongside individual strength.

What Season 8 changes

The official S8 announcement says the season update began September 24, 2026. It introduced a new story and stages, Joint Operation: Abyss and Abyssal Cruise, Thea as a new Rare Firepower Character, and Epic, Legendary, and Mythic variants of the Light Sniper Gun. Those additions make lists from before the season incomplete as a snapshot of the current roster and weapon pool; the announcement does not establish their relative performance. Check the official announcements.

The Google Play listing records an August 9, 2026 update that included Mulan, Whirlwind Gun, and Curse Thorns weapon awakening. That is useful historical context, but the later September S8 announcement is the more current season reference. The listing identifies the game as an SNK-licensed mobile title published by VNGGames and notes in-game purchases. View the Google Play listing.

How to choose characters for your mode

Rather than treating one tier as decisive, compare what a character contributes in the content you actually play. TechBloat’s stated criteria offer a practical framework, not an official scoring system.

  • Campaign and wave clearing: Consider damage across groups, skill utility, survivability, and how comfortably you can execute the character’s kit.
  • Boss fights: Prioritize reliable damage against a single target and whether the character’s abilities support your chosen weapon.
  • Co-op: Look at the character’s contribution to the team, not just personal damage, and whether the other two deployed characters complement that role.
  • Challenge stages and score pushing: Weigh consistency, survivability, and execution requirements alongside peak damage. A theoretically strong setup may be less useful if it is difficult to play reliably.

Character damage, skill utility, team synergy, survivability, and ease of use are factors TechBloat says it considers. Your available characters, upgrades, teammates, and skill can change which option works best in practice.

How to judge weapons separately

A character list is not a weapon list. A weapon’s value depends on its role, its fit with the character using it, and the content being played. TechBloat identifies these comparison factors for weapons:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Damage profile: Compare sustained output and burst potential, especially for boss-focused play.
  • Coverage: Consider area coverage for waves and groups rather than assuming a single-target weapon will suit every stage.
  • Handling: Reload comfort and consistency affect how reliably a weapon performs during a fight.
  • Progression and access: Upgrade scaling and accessibility matter when comparing a weapon you can build now with one whose full potential would require more investment.
  • Compatibility: Check how the weapon works with your character’s skills and the rest of the team.

The S8 announcement confirms the Light Sniper Gun’s Epic, Legendary, and Mythic variants, but does not rank them against other weapons or provide performance comparisons. It would be misleading to turn the release notice into a weapon tier placement.

A practical way to make your own shortlist

  1. Choose the mode first. Decide whether you need a campaign or wave-clear setup, boss damage, co-op contribution, or score-pushing performance.
  2. Pick a character role. Compare personal damage, utility, survivability, and ease of execution against what your team is missing.
  3. Match a weapon to the job. Consider sustained damage, burst, coverage, reload comfort, upgrades, and character compatibility rather than ranking weapons in isolation.
  4. Account for your actual investment. Compare what your roster and weapons can do at your current upgrades, not only their theoretical maximum potential.
  5. Recheck the date and season. The S8 additions arrived after Pocket Gamer’s September 2 list. Older placements may not reflect the latest content, and the official update notice does not supply a replacement ranking.

Why older lists need a date check

Tier placements can become less useful as the roster and weapons change. Pocket Tactics’ character and weapon list was last updated October 31, 2023, so it is too old to guide an October 2026 recommendation. See Pocket Tactics’ dated list.

Metal Slug: Awakening is an SNK-licensed mobile game published by VNGGames. Its official Google Play listing identifies in-game purchases; this guide’s tiers are editorial comparisons, not publisher-endorsed rankings.
