Metro Awakening is one of the most convincing attempts to bring the Metro formula into VR. Manually reloading weapons, charging your headlamp, cleaning your gas mask and peering around corners make the Moscow Metro’s darkness, radiation and scarce ammunition feel physically immediate. It is atmospheric, tactile and often genuinely unnerving.
But this is a focused, linear survival-horror adventure—not a VR equivalent of Metro Exodus. Its early campaign is stronger than its later sections, where backtracking, repeated environments, limited interaction and familiar encounters reduce the tension. For existing VR owners, it is highly recommended; players expecting a long, open-ended shooter should wait for a sale.

Metro Awakening was developed and published by Vertigo Games in collaboration with Deep Silver. It is a VR-exclusive prequel to Metro 2033, set five years before that game. You play as Serdar, a doctor searching the Moscow Metro for his wife and desperately needed medication. The story was created with involvement from Metro author Dmitry Glukhovsky. Vertigo Games confirmed the launch and platform details.
Why Metro Awakening is so immersive
The game understands that Metro’s defining horror is not simply the presence of mutants. It is the pressure of surviving in a place where visibility, equipment and ammunition can fail at the worst possible moment.

In VR, those pressures become actions rather than status-bar abstractions. You reach to your body for a weapon, handle ammunition, reload by hand, manage filters and maintain the gas mask. The headlamp is especially effective: darkness is not merely a visual effect when your light can flicker or need recharging. The result is a constant awareness of what your hands are doing and what may be waiting just outside your narrow field of vision.
Sound design and lighting do much of the remaining work. Distant noises, hostile headlamps, movement in vents and silhouettes beyond the tunnel keep the player searching the darkness. A creature approaching through a confined passage feels personal in a headset in a way it rarely can on a television.
This is also why the game’s horror is best described as atmospheric rather than relentlessly startling. The early sections create powerful anticipation through darkness, radiation, tight spaces and uncertainty. Scripted scares can become easier to predict, and repeated enemy encounters later on reduce the danger. The atmosphere stays strong even when the surprise fades.

The best VR interactions
Metro Awakening’s greatest achievement is tactile rather than systemic. Its weapons and survival equipment feel like objects you are carrying, not icons selected from a menu.
- Weapons: firearms and improvised weapons fit the scavenger-survival identity of the series.
- Reloading: physically replacing ammunition makes every firefight more stressful, especially when supplies are limited.
- Gas mask: putting it on, maintaining it and managing filters reinforces the feeling that the environment itself is hostile.
- Headlamp: managing your light turns visibility into a resource and gives darkness a mechanical purpose.
- Cover: leaning around obstacles to watch patrols or check a corridor creates genuine physical tension.
- Scavenging: searching for ammunition and equipment supports the series’ survival rhythm.
PlayStation’s overview of the PS VR2 version highlights manual weapon handling, gas-mask filters, headlamp use and the way familiar Metro mechanics were redesigned around physical controls.
There is an important limit, however. The game is not a fully simulated underground ecosystem. Many environmental objects look as though they should open or respond but cannot always be manipulated. The equipment in your hands is convincing; the world around it is considerably more restricted. Collision oddities and other small interaction breaks can puncture the illusion.

Combat and stealth
Gunplay is stressful in the right way
The gunplay benefits directly from VR’s physical demands. Reloading takes time and attention, ammunition is worth conserving, and encounters often invite a choice between shooting, sneaking or waiting. One-handed weapons are generally straightforward to aim, while two-handed handling can feel less natural depending on your headset, controller setup and personal play style.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11The combat foundation is strongest when resources are scarce and the player is improvising. It is less impressive as a deep shooter system. The weapon selection and encounter design do not offer the same breadth or systemic flexibility as the genre’s very best shooters, and the variety becomes less satisfying as the campaign progresses.
Stealth creates real tension, but not a deep sandbox
Darkness, cover and physical peeking make stealth one of the more successful ways to use VR. Watching an enemy patrol and leaning around a barrier to judge the route feels more involving than simply crouching behind a button prompt.
Still, stealth is best understood as a useful approach within carefully authored levels, not as an exceptionally sophisticated simulation. The game usually communicates the intended behavior through its layout, and encounters can become predictable once their patterns are familiar. Stealth is most satisfying when something goes wrong and you improvise under pressure.
Story: an accessible prequel with uneven pacing
Serdar’s search for his wife gives the campaign an emotional focus beyond surviving one monster encounter after another. The story explores grief, desperation, survival and psychological strain, while the Metro setting supplies familiar political, social and supernatural context.

Close-range VR conversations can make characters feel unusually present, and the voice acting helps sell the personal stakes. UploadVR praised the narrative focus, emotional themes and performances in its review.

The pacing is less consistent. Some players may find the opening hour slow or overly controlled, while extended walking and exposition can interrupt the horror rhythm. The narrative can also feel more nebulous as the campaign advances, particularly for players who came primarily for constant action.
You do not need to have played Metro 2033 to understand the basic premise. As a prequel, Awakening is a reasonable entry point, although returning fans will get more from its lore, references and understanding of the setting. The main story can be enjoyed spoiler-free without prior knowledge.
The campaign loses momentum
The first half is where the game makes its strongest impression. The equipment interactions still feel fresh, scavenging has greater urgency, and the combination of darkness, exploration and combat produces a steady sense of discovery.

Later, that formula is stretched. Reused spaces, backtracking, long traversal sections and repeated encounter types make the underground feel less unpredictable. The linear structure helps the developers control cinematic pacing, but it also limits experimentation. What initially feels like a carefully directed descent can eventually resemble a guided attraction with fewer surprises.
Expect a single-player campaign of roughly 10–13 hours for many players, depending on difficulty, exploration, movement style and how much time is spent scavenging. Steam lists the game as single-player, and it is best approached as a contained narrative campaign rather than a replay-focused or multiplayer experience.
Graphics and performance by platform
PlayStation VR2
PS VR2 is the simplest console option for PS5 owners. The headset’s OLED contrast suits the game’s dark tunnels, while headset and controller haptics complement weapon handling and environmental impacts. The PS5 version requires PlayStation VR2 and PS VR2 Sense controllers. PlayStation highlights high-resolution textures, fog, particles and parallax mapping on its official game page.

- 33% MORE MEMORY — Elevate your play with 8GB of RAM. Upgraded memory delivers a next-level experience fueled by sharper graphics and more responsive performance.
Image quality is also subjective in VR. OLED contrast, mura tolerance and sensitivity to reprojection can affect how different players perceive the same presentation. PS VR2 is a strong choice for convenience and atmosphere, but buyers are committing to that ecosystem and should not purchase the headset solely for this one game unless they also want its wider library.
Quest 2 and Quest 3
Standalone Quest is the most convenient way to play without a gaming PC or cable. Quest 3 provides the stronger standalone presentation, but it should not be treated as identical to Quest 2. Mobile hardware requires visual compromises, and reviews have reported that Quest 3 uses Meta’s Application Spacewarp, which can produce visual artifacts in some situations.
Quest 2 owners should buy only if they are comfortable with lower visual fidelity and the limitations of older hardware. Quest 3 is the better recommendation for buyers prioritizing standalone image quality and longer-term headset usefulness. Road to VR’s platform comparison notes that PC VR and PS VR2 have stronger textures, models and lighting than the standalone version.
PC VR
PC VR is the enthusiast option. Steam lists support for Oculus Rift, Meta Quest 2 and 3 family headsets, HTC Vive hardware and Valve Index, although support does not guarantee identical controller mapping or performance across setups.
A capable gaming PC can deliver the best rendering options, but results depend on the graphics card, headset resolution, refresh rate and whether you use a cable or wireless streaming. Wireless play adds variables including network quality, compression and latency. PC VR is therefore the best fit for owners of suitable hardware—not the simplest entry point.
Comfort and accessibility
The game supports seated and standing play, snap and smooth turning, teleport movement, smooth movement and vignetting or blinders. Exact menu labels and availability can vary by platform or patch.

Those options help, but they cannot remove every risk. Tight corridors, stairs and certain horizon shifts may be harder on sensitive players than open environments. New VR players should begin with seated or teleport movement and snap turning, then introduce smooth options gradually. Stop playing when nausea begins rather than trying to push through it.
Enclosed spaces, darkness, spiders and mutant creatures are also significant content considerations. This is a poor choice for anyone particularly sensitive to claustrophobia or creature horror, even if the comfort settings are otherwise broad.
Which version should you buy?
- Choose PS VR2 if you own a PS5 and want the easiest setup, strong contrast and console haptics.
- Choose PC VR if you already have a capable gaming PC and want the strongest rendering options.
- Choose Quest 3 if wireless, standalone convenience matters most.
- Choose Quest 2 cautiously if you accept lower visual fidelity and older-hardware compromises.
Prices and discounts vary by storefront and region, so check the Steam listing, PlayStation Store listing or the official Meta listing before buying. Historical PlayStation discounts are not evidence of a current offer. The optional Steam Deluxe Upgrade adds cosmetic items and a concept-art gallery; it does not materially change the campaign.
Is Metro Awakening worth buying?
Buy at full price if you already own a compatible headset, want a polished narrative horror experience, value physical interaction more than systemic depth and enjoy slow-burn pacing.
Wait for a sale if you expect Metro Exodus-scale exploration, dislike backtracking, want extensive replayability or are unsure whether a roughly 10–13-hour linear campaign suits you.
Look elsewhere if you want flat-screen play, multiplayer, an open world or a pure action shooter. Half-Life: Alyx remains the clearer PC VR benchmark for environmental interactivity, physics and systemic polish. Metro Exodus is the better choice for a larger, more exploratory Metro campaign, while Resident Evil 4 VR Mode is better suited to action-focused survival horror.
Final verdict
Metro Awakening succeeds because VR makes the series’ physical anxieties intimate: a failing light, a dirty mask, an empty magazine and a noise in the tunnel all demand your attention. Its lighting, sound, atmosphere and weapon handling are excellent reasons to play it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIt falls short of becoming the definitive VR shooter because its world is less interactive than its equipment, its campaign is tightly linear and its later sections repeat ideas that were more effective early on. For VR horror fans and Metro followers, it is highly recommended. For everyone else, especially players seeking scale and variety, wait for a sale.
