mexplorer.dll is a legacy Sony Mobile Explorer module used by Sony Ericsson PC Suite and Sony PC Companion, not a Windows system DLL. If Windows says mexplorer.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair the Sony program that originally installed it instead of downloading a loose DLL.
Identify the program before repairing anything
Use the error window, desktop shortcut, or Start menu entry to identify what called the file. The affected software is usually Sony Ericsson PC Suite or Sony PC Companion.

| Item | What to know |
|---|---|
| File | mexplorer.dll or MExplorer.dll |
| Associated software | Sony Ericsson PC Suite and Sony PC Companion |
| Role | Legacy Sony “Mobile Explorer” application module |
| Normal location | Inside the Sony program’s installation folder |
| Windows component | Not expected in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 |
| Architecture | Catalogued copies include a 32-bit PE32 DLL, so 64-bit Windows may still need the x86 application files |
| Current Sony replacement | Xperia Companion for supported Xperia workflows |
Reported application paths include:
C:Program FilesSony EricssonSony Ericsson PC Suite
C:Program Files (x86)SonySony PC Companion
The exact version, size, publisher metadata, and hash are not reliable identification tests. Public catalogs disagree on some of those details, so use the calling program and original installation path as your primary evidence.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall Sony PC Suite or PC Companion
This is the most likely solution when the Sony application still appears in Windows.

Try Windows repair first
- Press
Win+Ito open Settings. - Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps.
- Search for Sony PC Companion, Sony Ericsson PC Suite, or a similarly named Sony entry.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the program.
- Choose Advanced options if it is available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows and launch the Sony program again.
Repair keeps the existing installation while replacing damaged application files. If the program starts without the DLL message, the repair worked.
If there is no Repair option, or the error remains:
- Return to Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the Sony program.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the complete Sony package from Sony’s official support software, not from a DLL download page.
- Install it into its normal application directory unless the installer requires another location.
- Restart Windows again before testing the phone connection.
On older Control Panel versions, use Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, select the Sony application, and choose Repair or Uninstall if offered.
Do not copy mexplorer.dll from another computer. A copied file can belong to another build, have the wrong architecture, or be missing other files that the program needs.
Use Xperia Companion when the old program is no longer needed
Sony Ericsson PC Suite and PC Companion are legacy products. If you only need to manage a current Xperia device, use Sony’s current Xperia Companion software from the official Sony support page instead of rebuilding obsolete software.
Sony states that older Xperia Companion releases must be removed before installing the current supported version. Follow the removal and installation instructions on Sony’s official Xperia Companion support page.
If the current Sony installer fails, record the exact Windows version, installer message, installation path, and whether the failure happens during installation or when launching the program. Those details distinguish an installer problem from a missing application dependency.

Fix 2: Check whether security software quarantined the file
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine an application DLL. That produces the same missing-file message as accidental deletion.
Check Windows Security before restoring anything:
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Under Current threats, choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
mexplorer.dllor the Sony installation folder. - Open the event to see the detected path and action.
- Do not restore the file merely because its filename matches.
- If the event identifies the original Sony path, verify the Sony installation source and scan the complete installation before considering restoration.
Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined file can reintroduce a genuine threat. If the file is detected again after reinstalling the official Sony application, leave it quarantined and investigate the detection rather than adding a broad antivirus exclusion.

Also check any third-party antivirus quarantine. Its record should show whether the file was removed, blocked, or renamed.
Fix 3: Confirm that the DLL is beside the Sony executable
A legitimate application DLL should normally be in the application directory that loads it.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
To inspect the installation:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the Sony application.
- Open its menu and choose Advanced options or Open file location if available.
- Otherwise right-click the Sony shortcut and select Open file location.
- Look for
mexplorer.dllbeside the affected executable.
Do not place the file manually in:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
A file with the right name in a system folder may be an unrelated copy or an impostor. Moving a 32-bit application DLL into a global Windows directory can also create new conflicts.
If the Sony folder exists but the DLL is missing, reinstall the complete Sony program. If the entire folder is gone, the program was probably removed, moved, or incompletely restored.
Fix 4: Determine whether another dependency is actually missing
The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that mexplorer.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by that DLL.
Read the complete error carefully. It may name:
MSVCPorVCRUNTIME- A USB or phone driver
- Another Sony module
- A file with a different name from
mexplorer.dll
If the error names a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime, use Microsoft’s official Latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads page. Install the architecture named by the application or installer. A 32-bit Sony application on 64-bit Windows may require the x86 package.
Do not assume that installing Visual C++ repairs mexplorer.dll. There is no reliable evidence that this Sony module itself is a Visual C++ runtime file. Install or repair a runtime only when the error or Sony installer identifies it as required. Older applications can also require a particular runtime generation, and newer packages are not universal replacements.
If the error names a phone or USB driver:
- Connect the phone only when the Sony software requests it.
- Press
Win+Xand open Device Manager. - Expand Portable Devices, Universal Serial Bus controllers, and Other devices.
- Look for a warning icon or an unknown Sony device.
- Right-click the affected device and choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- If the device is still broken, right-click it, choose Uninstall device, restart Windows, and reinstall the complete official Sony software.
A driver repair cannot replace a missing application DLL. It only addresses a separate device dependency.
When Windows repair commands require repeated manual runs and you are unsure which component changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what it finds; its free scan identifies problems, while repair is handled by the full version. Reinstalling the Sony program remains the definitive fix when its own DLL is missing.
For driver troubleshooting, Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the work of hunting through device entries and guessing which driver is stale; its free scan shows the findings, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is not a substitute for reinstalling Sony PC Suite or PC Companion.

Do not download an isolated DLL
Random DLL repositories can provide malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible build, or a file that does not include the dependencies the Sony program needs. A clean-looking filename is not proof of authenticity.
Use the official Sony installer or Xperia Companion instead. If antivirus detected the file, resolve that detection before restoring anything.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDo not run regsvr32 as a general repair
regsvr32 is for DLLs that implement registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no verified evidence that mexplorer.dll is an ActiveX or COM server.
Therefore, do not routinely run:
regsvr32 mexplorer.dll
A missing-entry-point error would indicate that registration is not appropriate. Reinstall the application instead.

Do not place the DLL in System32 or SysWOW64
Those folders are not universal storage locations for application DLLs. The correct location is the Sony program directory that loads the file.
Do not remove older Visual C++ packages casually
Multiple Visual C++ redistributable generations can coexist. Removing older versions may break unrelated applications and will not repair a missing Sony module unless the runtime itself is the named dependency.
FAQ
Is mexplorer.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with legacy Sony Ericsson PC Suite and Sony PC Companion. It is not expected to ship with Windows.
Is mexplorer.dll part of Xperia Companion?
The current Xperia Companion support material does not publish a manifest confirming this legacy DLL. Treat Xperia Companion as Sony’s current replacement rather than assuming it supplies the old file.
Why does a 64-bit Windows computer need a 32-bit DLL?
Older Sony applications may be 32-bit. A 32-bit program needs its 32-bit application files and dependencies even when Windows itself is 64-bit.
Should I install Visual C++ to fix this error?
Only if the error names a Visual C++ runtime such as MSVCP or VCRUNTIME, or the Sony installer explicitly requires it. Visual C++ does not directly supply mexplorer.dll.

What if the message says “module could not be found”?
Check the full message. Windows may be reporting a missing dependency rather than the named Sony DLL. Repair the Sony installation and investigate any other filename in the dialog.
What information should I collect if repair fails?
Record the exact error text, the Sony program name, Windows version, whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit, the installation path, antivirus action, and whether the error occurs at launch or during installation. Also note whether mexplorer.dll exists beside the affected executable.
Is it safe to restore the quarantined file?
Only after verifying the original path, scanning the complete application, and confirming the source. Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined file can reintroduce a genuine threat. Reinstalling from the official Sony source is safer.
