mfc100fra.dll is a Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Microsoft Foundation Class, or MFC, localization resource DLL. When Windows says that mfc100fra.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, the safest first repair is the matching Visual C++ 2010 redistributable, not an isolated DLL download.

The FRA suffix identifies French-language MFC resources. It is not a graphics, sound, DirectX, .NET, or hardware-driver file, and it is not normally repaired with regsvr32.

What mfc100fra.dll is

MFC is a library used by older Windows applications written with Microsoft Visual C++. Programs can use separate resource DLLs for translated menus, dialogs, messages, and other interface elements. Microsoft documents French as one of the supported MFC localization languages in its MFC localization documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The file belongs to the Visual C++ 2010 generation, sometimes described as Visual Studio 2010 or VC10. It is the French MFC resource file, not the main MFC code library.

Item What it means
File mfc100fra.dll
Main component Microsoft Foundation Class localization resource
Runtime generation Visual C++ 2010
Language suffix FRA means French resources
Normal package Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable, x86 or x64
Deployment Windows system directory or the application’s own folder
Best repair Repair or install the matching Microsoft redistributable

Microsoft’s MFC redistribution guidance explains that localized MFC DLLs can be installed centrally through the redistributable package or privately beside an application.

The file is not normally part of the base Windows installation. It may still appear in a Windows directory because a Visual C++ redistributable installed it there. An application can also include its own copy.

Microsoft’s legacy runtime documentation identifies Visual C++ 2010 SP1 with the 10.0.40219 version family. Microsoft file lists also document patched builds such as 10.0.40219.325, 10.0.40219.369, 10.0.40219.434, and 10.0.40219.447. These are examples from Microsoft’s servicing records, not a complete list of every valid file version.

The most likely fix

Install or repair Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 SP1 for the architecture used by the failing program.

Use Microsoft’s official Visual C++ 2010 SP1 Redistributable download page. The page provides separate installers, including:

  • vcredist_x86.exe for 32-bit applications
  • vcredist_x64.exe for 64-bit applications
  • vcredist_ia64.exe for Itanium systems, which is not the normal choice for a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC

Do not choose x64 solely because Windows is 64-bit. A 64-bit version of Windows can run many 32-bit programs, and those programs need the x86 runtime.

Install the correct package

  1. Open the official Microsoft download page for Visual C++ 2010 SP1.
  2. Select the download button.
  3. Choose vcredist_x86.exe if the affected application is 32-bit.
  4. Choose vcredist_x64.exe if the affected application is 64-bit.
  5. If you use both 32-bit and 64-bit applications, install both packages.
  6. Open the downloaded installer.
  7. Accept the license terms and select the installation option.
  8. Restart Windows after the installation finishes.
  9. Start the application again.

A successful repair normally means that the program opens without the missing-file message. You may also see Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 entries in the installed-program list.

Microsoft warns that redistributables should come from Microsoft-signed sources. Do not search for a separate mfc100fra.dll file when the official runtime installer is available.

Repair an existing installation

If Visual C++ 2010 is already installed, repair it before downloading several unrelated packages.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Find an entry named similar to Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 x86 Redistributable or Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 x64 Redistributable.
  5. Select the entry.
  6. Choose Change, Repair, or the equivalent maintenance option.
  7. Follow the installer prompts.
  8. Repeat for the other architecture if both x86 and x64 entries are installed.
  9. Restart Windows and test the affected program.

On some Windows 11 installations, you can instead open Settings and select:

  1. Start.
  2. Settings.
  3. Apps.
  4. Installed apps.
  5. Search for Microsoft Visual C++ 2010.
  6. Open the menu beside the matching entry.
  7. Choose Modify or Repair if the installer provides that option.

If the repair option is missing or fails, download the package directly from Microsoft and run it again.

x86 and x64 explained

The architecture of Windows and the architecture of the application are separate.

A 32-bit application needs the x86 Visual C++ runtime even when it runs on 64-bit Windows. A 64-bit application needs the x64 runtime. Installing only x64 will not normally satisfy a 32-bit application.

On a 64-bit Windows installation, the folder names can also be confusing:

  • C:\Windows\System32 normally contains 64-bit system files.
  • C:\Windows\SysWOW64 normally contains 32-bit system files.

This naming is a consequence of Windows compatibility design. It does not mean that SysWOW64 contains 64-bit files. Microsoft explains this behavior in its file-system redirector documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not determine the application architecture from the folder name alone. A program installed in Program Files (x86) is usually 32-bit, while one in Program Files is often 64-bit, but vendors can use different installation layouts. If you cannot confirm the architecture, installing both the x86 and x64 Visual C++ 2010 packages is normal on a 64-bit PC.

If the program is already running, Task Manager may identify a 32-bit process with a label such as (32 bit) or *32, depending on the Windows version. If the program will not launch, check the vendor’s system requirements or use the application’s repair installer rather than guessing from the DLL path.

Try the RTM package when SP1 does not help

Visual C++ 2010 RTM and Visual C++ 2010 SP1 are separate legacy runtime generations. Some older programs were built and tested against the original RTM runtime.

Start with SP1 because it is the usual VC++ 2010 repair package. If the application vendor specifies RTM, or if SP1 does not resolve the error, install the official Visual C++ 2010 RTM Redistributable package as well.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The RTM page provides x86 and x64 installers. Choose the architecture that matches the application, or install both on a 64-bit computer that runs both types of programs.

RTM and SP1 can exist side by side. Do not remove one simply because the other is installed. A newer Visual C++ package from another generation does not prove that Visual C++ 2010 is present.

Microsoft’s legacy Visual C++ redistributable table documents the older packages and explains that the runtime generations remain separate. The modern Visual C++ 2015–2022 package is not a replacement for the VC++ 2010 files, including mfc100fra.dll.

Repair the application or game

A program may ship a private copy of mfc100fra.dll beside its executable. In that situation, reinstalling the system redistributable may not repair the copy that the application loads.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows normally searches the application directory before the system directories. Microsoft describes this behavior in its DLL search order documentation.

Repair the affected program after installing the runtime.

Use Windows’ repair option

For a traditional desktop program:

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Find the affected program.
  5. Right-click it.
  6. Choose Repair or Change.
  7. Follow the installer instructions.
  8. Restart the program.

Microsoft also documents the repair path in its guide to repairing apps and programs in Windows.

For a Store-style application:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Find the application.
  5. Open its menu.
  6. Select Advanced options.
  7. Choose Repair.
  8. Start the application again.

Use Reset only when Repair does not work and you understand that Reset can remove application settings or local data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reinstall from the original installer

If Repair is unavailable or fails:

  1. Back up the application’s saves, profiles, or custom settings if necessary.
  2. Uninstall the affected program.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Download or run the installer from the original software vendor.
  5. Install the program again.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Test the program before adding modifications or third-party files.

This is especially important when the application uses a private Bin32, Bin64, or similar folder. The application installer is the correct source for its private runtime files.

Verify game files

If the error affects a game, use the launcher’s built-in Verify, Repair, or Scan function before reinstalling the entire game. Verification can restore files removed by a failed update or security product.

After verification finishes, restart the launcher and test the game. If the error remains, repair or reinstall the Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 package as well. A game can have both a private application-local runtime and a system-wide runtime dependency.

Check antivirus quarantine

Antivirus software can remove an application-local DLL after an update or a false positive. This is a strong clue when the program worked previously and the error appeared immediately after a security alert.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To check Windows Security:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open the application.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Review recent detections.
  7. Open any detection related to the affected program.
  8. Check the file path, detection name, and originating application.
  9. Restore or allow the file only if the program came from a trusted source and the file path is expected.
  10. Reinstall the application or runtime if the file was removed.

Microsoft explains Protection History in its Windows Security guidance.

Do not permanently disable antivirus protection just to make the error disappear. If the file is repeatedly quarantined, investigate the application installer and the detection before restoring anything.

A trusted application-local copy should come from the original application installer or the official Microsoft redistributable. Do not replace a quarantined file with a copy downloaded from an unrelated DLL website.

Check Windows Update

A failed update can leave an installer or application in an incomplete state. Windows Update is not a substitute for Visual C++ 2010, but it is useful when several Windows components are behaving incorrectly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart Windows, even if Windows does not immediately require a restart.
  6. Test the affected program again.

Microsoft’s current instructions are available in Install Windows updates.

If the Visual C++ installer itself fails, restart Windows first, install pending updates, and run the Microsoft installer again as an administrator. Microsoft’s Visual C++ redistributable troubleshooting guide also explains how to collect installer logs when normal repair does not work.

Repair broader Windows components with DISM and SFC

DISM and System File Checker are appropriate when the mfc100fra.dll message occurs alongside wider Windows problems, such as failed updates, damaged built-in applications, repeated system errors, or corruption affecting several unrelated programs.

They are not the primary way to install a missing Visual C++ redistributable. SFC may repair Windows-protected files, but it is not guaranteed to restore an application’s private copy of mfc100fra.dll.

Run DISM before SFC.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Terminal or Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click the result.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for DISM to finish.
  2. Then enter:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Test the affected program.

Microsoft recommends this order in its System File Checker and DISM instructions.

A useful result is a message saying that the restore operation completed successfully, followed by SFC reporting that it found no integrity violations or repaired damaged files. If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, restart and run the commands again only if Windows still shows broader corruption. Do not keep repeating SFC as a substitute for installing the correct VC++ package.

If the commands complete successfully but the same program still reports mfc100fra.dll, return to the Visual C++ repair and application-repair steps. The file may be a private application copy, or another dependency may be missing.

If manually hunting through Windows components and repeating SFC or DISM leaves you unsure what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what it identifies; the free scan shows exactly what is wrong, while repair is completed by the full version. It is optional, and when the file belongs to a specific game or application, reinstalling that program remains the definitive repair.

Update or reinstall drivers only for a separate driver problem

A graphics, chipset, audio, or storage driver does not normally supply mfc100fra.dll. Reinstalling a driver is therefore a low-priority step unless the DLL error began alongside wider hardware failures, display crashes, device warnings, or a recent driver installation.

To check a device in Device Manager:

  1. Press Windows + X.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the category for the device, such as Display adapters or Sound, video and game controllers.
  4. Right-click the relevant device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Select Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Install a driver if Windows finds one.
  8. Restart Windows.
  9. Check whether the hardware problem and application problem remain.

To reinstall a device driver:

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Expand the relevant device category.
  3. Right-click the device.
  4. Select Uninstall device.
  5. Confirm only when you have a known-good replacement path through Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Allow Windows to detect the device again.
  8. Install the manufacturer’s driver if Windows does not restore it automatically.

Do not uninstall an important device merely because mfc100fra.dll is missing. Repair the Visual C++ runtime and the affected application first.

When manually checking many hardware vendors and driver versions becomes the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; its free scan shows what it finds, while installing the drivers is done by the full version. It is optional and does not replace repairing the Visual C++ runtime or reinstalling the application that owns the missing file.

Windows Features are usually unrelated

Windows Features do not normally install mfc100fra.dll. Do not enable random features, DirectPlay, .NET components, or legacy options as a general DLL repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the application’s official requirements specifically name a Windows feature, you can check it this way:

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type optionalfeatures.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select only the feature required by the application.
  5. Select OK.
  6. Restart Windows if requested.
  7. Test the application.

If the program still reports mfc100fra.dll, install or repair Visual C++ 2010 instead. DirectX, .NET, and optional Windows Features are different technologies and do not provide this VC++ 2010 MFC resource file.

What the different error messages mean

The wording varies by Windows version and by the application loader. Common messages include:

The code execution cannot proceed because mfc100fra.dll was not found.
Reinstalling the program may fix this problem.
The program can't start because mfc100fra.dll is missing from your computer.
Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.

You may also see a Bad Image-style message saying that the file is either not designed to run on Windows or contains an error.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A missing-file message usually indicates that Windows could not find the file in the locations searched for that application. A Bad Image message can indicate a corrupt file, an incompatible architecture, or a missing dependency. It does not by itself prove malware.

A “could not be loaded” message is broader. The named DLL may exist but be unusable because:

  • The application is loading a different private copy.
  • The file has the wrong architecture.
  • The file is damaged.
  • Another VC++ file that it depends on is missing.
  • A required version of another library is unavailable.
  • The application installation is incomplete.

Microsoft explains that DLLs can depend on other DLLs in its guide to Visual C++ application dependencies.

If the file exists but the program still fails

Do not assume that the visible file is the one the program is using.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First, record the full path shown in the error. Then inspect the application’s installation folder and the Windows directories. On a 64-bit Windows system, the file may be in:

C:\Windows\System32
C:\Windows\SysWOW64

It may also be beside the application executable.

If a copy exists beside the executable, Windows may load that copy before the system copy. An old or damaged application-local copy can therefore continue causing the error even after the system redistributable is repaired.

The safest response is:

  1. Close the application.
  2. Do not delete or rename the DLL immediately.
  3. Run the application’s Repair option.
  4. Verify the game files if it is a game.
  5. Reinstall the application from its original installer if repair fails.
  6. Reinstall the matching x86 or x64 Visual C++ 2010 package.
  7. Restart Windows and test again.

You can inspect a file’s Properties dialog and Digital Signatures tab when available, but a filename alone is not proof that a DLL is safe or compatible. Do not copy a file from another computer, because it may be the wrong architecture, build, or dependency set.

What not to do

Do not download the DLL from a random website

A standalone DLL download can contain malware, be modified, have the wrong architecture, or belong to a different Visual C++ build. Even a genuine-looking file may not repair the missing runtime because the application could also need other VC++ files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the official Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 SP1 package, the official Visual C++ 2010 RTM package, or the original application installer.

Do not copy it into System32 manually

Manual copying can create a version mismatch and can make it harder to determine which copy Windows is loading. It can also place a 32-bit file where a 64-bit program expects a 64-bit file, or the reverse.

Microsoft recommends the redistributable for central MFC deployment. Application developers may deploy a matching private copy beside their own executable, but ordinary users should let the program installer manage that copy.

Do not run regsvr32 on this file

Do not run:

regsvr32 mfc100fra.dll

regsvr32 is intended for self-registering COM or ActiveX DLLs that provide a DllRegisterServer entry point. A localized MFC resource DLL is not normally a COM server. Registering it will not install the Visual C++ runtime and may produce an entry-point error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not install only the newest Visual C++ package

Visual C++ redistributables are maintained by generation. The modern Visual C++ 2015–2022 package does not replace the VC++ 2010 filename mfc100fra.dll.

Install Visual C++ 2010 x86 or x64 as required, even if a newer Visual C++ redistributable already appears in Apps and Features.

Do not begin with graphics drivers, DirectX, or .NET

Those components do not normally provide this file. Use them only when the application has an independent, documented requirement or when separate hardware symptoms point to a driver problem.

Do not disable antivirus permanently

If antivirus removed the file, review Protection History and validate the application source. Restore a quarantined file only when the program and file are trusted. Otherwise reinstall from the official source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When System Restore is appropriate

System Restore is a later recovery option for a recent change that affected several programs or system components. It is not the first repair for a missing Visual C++ file.

To use it:

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select a restore point created before the problem began.
  3. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  4. Review the changes.
  5. Continue only if the restore point is appropriate.
  6. Restart Windows when the process finishes.
  7. Test the affected application.

You can also open Control Panel, select Recovery, and choose Open System Restore. Microsoft describes the process in its System Restore documentation.

A restore point may not restore an application-local file or the exact VC++ package you need. If the error remains, reinstall the runtime and the affected application.

A practical repair order

Use this order so that each step addresses a likely cause without changing unrelated parts of Windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Write down the exact error and full path.
  2. Determine whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  3. Install or repair Visual C++ 2010 SP1 x86 or x64 from Microsoft.
  4. Install the other architecture too if the computer runs both types of applications.
  5. Install the official RTM package if the application specifically needs it or SP1 does not help.
  6. Repair or reinstall the affected program.
  7. Verify game files when the error affects a game.
  8. Check Windows Security Protection History.
  9. Install pending Windows updates and restart.
  10. Run DISM followed by SFC only when wider Windows corruption is suspected.
  11. Investigate drivers only when separate hardware symptoms exist.
  12. Use System Restore only as a later recovery option.

Frequently asked questions

Is mfc100fra.dll a Windows system file?

It is a Microsoft component, but it is not normally supplied as part of the base Windows installation. It is distributed through Visual C++ and MFC deployment. A redistributable may place it in a Windows system directory, while an application may keep a private copy beside its executable.

Does FRA mean that Windows must use French?

No. FRA identifies the French MFC resource DLL. An application may include or request it because of its localization resources. The file’s presence does not mean that the entire Windows installation must use French.

Do I need x86 or x64?

Use x86 for a 32-bit application and x64 for a 64-bit application. On 64-bit Windows, installing both is normal when you use both 32-bit and 64-bit programs.

Why did installing the newest Visual C++ package not fix it?

The newer redistributable belongs to a different runtime generation. VC++ 2010 remains separate, and modern packages do not provide the VC10 filename mfc100fra.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The file is already in System32. Why does the application still fail?

The program may be loading an application-local copy first, or another dependency may be missing. Repair or reinstall the application, verify its files, and install the runtime matching the program’s architecture.

Can I delete mfc100fra.dll if it looks suspicious?

Do not delete it simply because it appears in System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder. Record its path, inspect the file’s properties, check the application that installed it, and use official repair or uninstall procedures.

Is a Bad Image message proof that the file is malware?

No. Bad Image errors can result from corruption, incompatibility, the wrong architecture, or a missing dependency. Check the source, path, digital signature when available, and recent antivirus history before drawing conclusions.

What information should I provide if the repair fails?

Record these details:

  • The complete error text.
  • The full path shown for mfc100fra.dll.
  • The name and version of the affected program.
  • Whether the program is a game or desktop application.
  • Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  • Whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  • Which Visual C++ 2010 packages appear as installed.
  • Whether the error started after an update, reinstall, or antivirus alert.
  • Whether another VC++ DLL is also named in the error.

That information distinguishes a missing central runtime from an incomplete application-local installation, an architecture mismatch, a quarantined file, or a broader Windows problem.
