Start with these three checks
Before changing Windows files, write down:
- Which application or game displays the error.
- Whether the error appears at startup, during installation, after an update, or after antivirus activity.
- Whether the affected program is 32-bit or 64-bit.
The filename mfc42fra.dll identifies a legacy Microsoft Foundation Classes localization file, but it does not identify the application that needs it. The safest repair is normally to repair or reinstall that specific application from its original installer.
Do not begin by downloading an isolated DLL from a search result. A replacement may be modified, incompatible with the application, the wrong architecture, or missing other runtime files that the program also needs.

What is mfc42fra.dll?
mfc42fra.dll is a genuine Microsoft file named MFC Language Specific Resources. It belongs to the Microsoft Foundation Classes, commonly called MFC, from the older Visual C++ 4.2 and Visual C++ 6.0 generation.

The fra suffix identifies French resources. It contains localized menus, dialogs, messages, and other application resources used by older MFC programs. It is not the main MFC programming library and is not a Windows service, driver, executable program, or background process.

Microsoft classifies files following the mfc[version][language].dll pattern as MFC language resources in its DLL redistribution documentation. Archived Microsoft documentation also describes these files as resource-only DLLs used by MFC applications.
That distinction matters. A resource-only DLL is loaded because an application needs language-specific resources. It is not normally registered with Windows and does not need regsvr32.
The file is associated mainly with:
- Legacy Visual C++ 5.0 and 6.0 applications.
- Visual Basic 6.0 applications that use MFC localization support.
- Older installers and utilities bundled with applications, games, scanners, printers, modems, and other hardware software.
Microsoft’s Visual Basic 6.0 support policy specifically lists mfc42fra.dll among localization support binaries. The same policy explains that these localization files are not supplied as ordinary current Windows components and are expected to be provided by the application setup.
A modern Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation not containing this file is therefore not automatically damaged.
Why does an English Windows installation need a French DLL?
Windows language and application language are separate.
An English Windows installation may still run software that:
- Was built with French resources.
- Was installed from a multilingual package.
- Uses French as its selected application language.
- Loads all supported language resources during startup.
- Was developed with an installer that expects a particular MFC resource filename.
The application may request mfc42fra.dll even when most of its interface is in English. The filename alone does not prove that Windows itself has been switched to French or that the user deliberately installed French software.

Is mfc42fra.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
Treat mfc42fra.dll as a legacy 32-bit x86 component unless the application publisher gives you different instructions. No supported 64-bit edition of this particular localization file has been established.
The application’s architecture matters more than the architecture of Windows:
- A 32-bit application needs the 32-bit legacy runtime files.
- A 64-bit application needs 64-bit dependencies, but it would not normally request this old 32-bit MFC resource file.
- A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows through Windows compatibility technology.
The folder names on 64-bit Windows are easy to misunderstand:
C:\Windows\System32is primarily the 64-bit system directory.C:\Windows\SysWOW64is the 32-bit compatibility directory.
Do not copy mfc42fra.dll into both folders. Do not assume that the correct destination is either system folder. Many older applications expect their private runtime files beside the application executable.

What the error messages mean
You may see one of these messages:
This application has failed to start because mfc42fra.dll was not found.
Re-installing the application may fix this problem.
The code execution cannot proceed because mfc42fra.dll was not found.
Reinstalling the program may fix the problem.
mfc42fra.dll is missing from your computer.
Error loading mfc42fra.dll.
The procedure entry point ... could not be located in the dynamic link library mfc42fra.dll.
mfc42fra.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.
The first group generally indicates that the file cannot be found in the application’s expected search path. The problem may be a missing file, an incorrectly installed application, or a missing dependency of that file.
The procedure-entry-point and “not designed to run on Windows” messages usually point to a mismatch, damaged file, wrong architecture, incompatible build, or bad replacement. They are not normally fixed by registering the DLL.
Microsoft documents the standard missing Visual C++ runtime wording in its Visual C++ redistribution guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFix 1: Repair or reinstall the application
This is the fastest and most reliable fix for mfc42fra.dll.
The file is normally supplied by the old application’s installer, not fetched automatically from modern Windows Update. Reinstalling the program from its original publisher, installation media, or verified game launcher can restore the correct language resource and its companion files together.
Repair an installed application in Windows 11
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the application that produces the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Select Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
The exact options vary by program. Some desktop applications instead provide Modify, Change, or Repair in Control Panel.
Repair an application through Control Panel
- Press
Win+R. - Enter:
appwiz.cpl
- Press Enter.
- Find the affected application in Programs and Features.
- Right-click it.
- Select Repair or Change, if available.
- Complete the installer prompts.
- Restart the program.
If repair is unavailable or does not restore the file:
- Save the application’s documents and configuration data.
- Uninstall the program.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it from the original publisher or original installation media.
- If it is a game, use the launcher’s repair or verification function first.
- Start the program again.
Microsoft provides general repair and reinstall guidance for apps and programs.
If the application is a game
Use the game launcher’s own file verification feature before manually replacing anything. For Epic Games Launcher:
- Open Epic Games Launcher.
- Open Library.
- Select the three dots beside the game.
- Select Manage.
- Select Verify.
- Wait for the process to finish.
- Launch the game again.
Epic states that verification replaces missing or corrupted game files without affecting saved data. Other launchers use similar options with names such as Verify, Repair, or Scan and repair.
If verification completes but the same error remains, reinstall the game or contact its publisher. The launcher may be restoring the main program while the separate legacy runtime installer is failing.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix 2: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Antivirus software may remove an old DLL after an application update, cleanup operation, or false positive. A missing file after quarantine is plausible, but the filename alone is not enough reason to restore it.
Check Windows Security before downloading anything.
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Expand events related to the affected application or
mfc42fra.dll. - Note the detected file path and action.
Microsoft explains the process in its Protection History guidance.
Only restore or allow the file when all of the following are true:
- It came from the original application installer or a verified application directory.
- The application publisher confirms that it is required.
- The file path is consistent with the installed program.
- A scan of the installer and application directory does not show additional suspicious activity.
Do not restore a file merely because it has a Microsoft-sounding name. Malware can use familiar filenames, and an unexpected copy in a temporary directory or user profile deserves investigation.
Protection History does not retain events indefinitely. If the quarantine event is no longer available, reinstall the application from a trusted original source and check whether antivirus removes the file again.
If the file disappears immediately after reinstalling:
- Do not repeatedly copy it back.
- Update Windows Security definitions.
- Scan the installer.
- Check the application publisher’s support documentation.
- Contact the publisher with the detection name, file path, and installer version.
Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined file can cause Defender to detect it again unless it is explicitly allowed, and allowing an unsafe file can put the computer at risk.

Fix 3: Restore the matching legacy runtime from the application installer
mfc42fra.dll may be installed alongside other Visual C++ 6.0 files. Common companions can include:
mfc42.dllmfc42u.dllmsvcrt.dllmsvcp60.dll- Other application-specific MFC or Visual C++ components
The exact set depends on how the application was built. Do not substitute one similarly named file for another.
The old VC6 redistributable package was known as VC6RedistSetup_enu.exe or Vcredist.exe. Archived Microsoft documentation says that this package installs core Visual C++ 6.0 runtime files but does not install localized MFC satellite DLLs. That means installing the old runtime alone may not restore mfc42fra.dll.
The safest source remains the application’s own installer. If the publisher supplies a separate prerequisite package, use that package exactly as documented.
The current supported Visual C++ redistributable downloads include current x86 and x64 packages for newer Visual C++ generations. They are appropriate when the application requires one of those newer runtimes, but they are not a guaranteed source for the legacy VC6 French resource file.
Do not remove all existing Visual C++ Redistributable entries before testing. Older applications can require different generations, and Microsoft notes that earlier redistributables may remain installed side by side.
Fix 4: Confirm that the correct program is being repaired
The error dialog may be shown by a launcher, updater, scheduled task, startup utility, or hardware setup program rather than the application you expected.
To identify the program:
Check the shortcut
- Right-click the shortcut that produces the error.
- Select Properties.
- Review the Target field.
- Note the executable path.
- Check the Start in field.
- Record the application name and installation directory.
If the shortcut points to an old directory, repair or reinstall that copy rather than a newer copy elsewhere.

- Search for programs installed or updated around the time the error began.
- Compare their installation paths with the shortcut target.
Check startup programs
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Open Startup apps.
- Look for an old utility, updater, printer program, scanner package, or game launcher.
- Note its publisher and status.
- Do not disable an entry permanently until you know what it does.
Check Task Manager after launching
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Start the affected program.
- Watch for a process that appears briefly and disappears.
- Right-click a visible related process.
- Select Open file location.
A hardware utility may be the caller even though the actual device driver is unrelated. mfc42fra.dll is not a driver, but an old driver package may include an MFC-based configuration or setup program.
Fix 5: Check the application directory and dependencies
If the application installer says the file is present but Windows still reports it as missing, the loader may be failing on a dependency.
A “module not found” message can mean:
mfc42fra.dllis absent.- The file is in the wrong directory.
- The application is launching a different copy than expected.
- Another DLL needed by the resource file or application is missing.
- The file is the wrong architecture.
- The file is damaged or incompatible.
- Antivirus removed a companion file.
Use File Explorer to inspect the application’s own directory. Do not move files yet.
- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Select Open File Location.
- Look for
mfc42fra.dll. - Record its full path.
- Check whether the application also contains the expected companion runtime files.
- Compare the location with the executable that the shortcut launches.
A present file is not automatically a correct file. Avoid replacing it with a copy from another application, another computer, or a random download site.

Fix 6: Check the architecture and compatibility
The old MFC family is normally used by 32-bit programs. Installing a 64-bit package does not make a 32-bit application compatible with a 32-bit legacy DLL.
To check the application architecture, ask the publisher or inspect the program’s documentation. Windows itself does not always display the architecture plainly in File Explorer.
Useful clues include:
- A legacy application installed under
C:\Program Files (x86). - A Visual Basic 6 application.
- An older game or utility released for Windows versions before current 64-bit systems were common.
- A program whose installer includes VC6 or VB6 prerequisites.
Do not assume that the operating system architecture tells you which runtime to install. A 64-bit edition of Windows can run many 32-bit applications, but those applications still require their 32-bit dependencies.

Fix 7: Do not use regsvr32 for this file
Normally, regsvr32 does not apply to mfc42fra.dll.
regsvr32 is intended for self-registering COM DLLs and ActiveX controls that expose registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. mfc42fra.dll is a resource-only MFC localization DLL, not normally a COM server.
These commands are not a normal repair:
regsvr32 mfc42fra.dll
regsvr32 /i mfc42fra.dll
regsvr32 /u mfc42fra.dll
They may produce an error stating that the entry point was not found. They cannot restore a missing file, repair a wrong application path, or install a missing dependency.
Use regsvr32 only when the software publisher specifically identifies another DLL as a COM or ActiveX component that requires registration. Microsoft explains the intended use and common errors in its Regsvr32 troubleshooting guidance.
Fix 8: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
SFC and DISM are useful when several Windows components are failing, Windows features are damaged, or other system files show errors. They are not guaranteed to restore an application-private VC6 file.
Run DISM before SFC from an elevated Command Prompt.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application.
Microsoft’s DISM and SFC instructions recommend this order. DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows files.
Success means that DISM or SFC reports a successful repair and broader Windows symptoms improve. It does not necessarily mean that mfc42fra.dll will appear in the application directory.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

It is optional, and reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix when that program owns the missing file.
Do not copy a DLL into a Windows system directory because SFC did not restore it. That usually indicates the file is not a protected Windows component.
Fix 9: Install Windows updates when the problem follows an update
Windows Update is worth checking when the error began after an interrupted update, restart, or system change. It is not expected to download an application-specific mfc42fra.dll.
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application.
Microsoft documents this process in Install Windows updates.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 10: Use System Restore after a recent system change
System Restore can help when the error began directly after installing a driver, cleanup utility, system component, or other software.
It is appropriate when:
- The program worked before a specific change.
- A restore point exists from before the problem.
- The problem affects more than one application or Windows feature.
- Repairing the affected application did not help.
To open System Restore:
- Press
Win+R. - Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs, if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next and then Finish if the restore point is appropriate.
- Allow Windows to restart.
Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore documentation.
System Restore normally preserves personal files, but it can remove programs, drivers, and updates installed after the selected restore point. Do not use it as a substitute for repairing the application if only one old program is affected.
Fix 11: Reinstall a related device utility or driver
A scanner, printer, modem, or other hardware package may contain an old MFC-based setup utility that requests mfc42fra.dll. The DLL itself is not a driver, so reinstalling a driver is relevant only when the error clearly belongs to a device package.
First identify the device software:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Installed apps or Apps and Features.
- Look for the device manufacturer’s control panel, setup utility, or status monitor.
- Repair or reinstall that application from the hardware manufacturer.
- Avoid replacing the driver merely because the DLL name appears in an error.
If Device Manager shows a related device problem:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Allow Windows to reinstall the device, or install the correct package from the hardware manufacturer.
Microsoft provides the Device Manager driver reinstallation steps.
When you are manually checking many hardware models and guessing which of several drivers is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify reported driver issues; the free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation is completed by the full version. It is optional, and it cannot replace repairing the specific application that supplied mfc42fra.dll.
Can you copy mfc42fra.dll manually?
Only in a controlled situation.
Manual copying may be appropriate when:
- The file comes from the original application installer or installation media.
- The file matches the application’s legacy MFC generation.
- The application publisher specifies the destination.
- The destination is the application’s own directory.
- The file has been checked for authenticity and malware.
Do not download an isolated copy from a random DLL website and place it in System32 or SysWOW64. This can introduce:
Recommended Free Tools
- Malware or a tampered file.
- The wrong architecture.
- An incompatible MFC generation.
- A version conflict with another legacy application.
- A misleading repair that leaves other dependencies missing.
Do not assume that these files are interchangeable:
mfc42fra.dllmfc42.dllmfc42u.dllmfc42loc.dll- Newer files such as
mfc120fra.dllormfc140.dll
An archived Microsoft localization procedure used MFC42LOC.dll as a generic localization filename, but it warned that only one system-wide localization DLL could be active. Do not rename mfc42fra.dll to MFC42LOC.dll unless the application’s own documentation specifically requires it.
Application-local deployment is generally safer than changing shared Windows directories. If the publisher does not document manual copying, reinstall the complete program instead.
What if the error says the file is not designed to run on Windows?
This wording usually points to one of these conditions:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- The file is corrupt.
- The file is the wrong architecture.
- The file belongs to another MFC generation.
- A replacement came from an untrusted source.
- The application installer deployed an incompatible build.
- A dependency is damaged.
The correct response is to remove the bad application installation and reinstall the complete program from its original source. Do not respond with repeated regsvr32 commands. Do not replace the file with a newer MFC resource DLL.
If antivirus quarantined the file, verify the installer and publisher before restoring anything.
What if the file exists but the application still fails?
A present DLL does not prove that the loader can use it.
Work through these checks:
- Confirm that the application is launching the directory you inspected.
- Check whether the file is in the location expected by the application.
- Confirm that the application is legacy 32-bit software when appropriate.
- Look for missing companions such as
mfc42.dll,mfc42u.dll,msvcrt.dll, ormsvcp60.dll. - Check Protection History for a related removal.
- Repair or reinstall the entire application.
- Ask the publisher which exact VC6 runtime build it requires.
If the message names mfc42fra.dll but the file is present, the failing module may be a dependency. This is one reason isolated DLL replacement often fails.
Do not use a version number or file size as a universal test. Historical records contain multiple builds, and there is no single current Microsoft manifest establishing one version and byte size for every legitimate copy.
What if reinstalling does not work?
Record the following before contacting support:
- The complete error text.
- The application name and version.
- The executable path.
- The application’s installation path.
- Windows edition and architecture.
- Whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit, if known.
- Whether the error affects all Windows user accounts.
- Whether
mfc42fra.dllexists and where. - Whether Windows Security recorded a quarantine.
- Whether the issue began after an update, cleanup, driver installation, or failed setup.
- Which repair and reinstall steps you already completed.
Then send that information to the application publisher. Ask specifically:
- Does this release require
mfc42fra.dll? - Which MFC or Visual C++ generation is required?
- Should the file be beside the application executable?
- Does the installer include a language or localization component?
- Is a separate 32-bit prerequisite package required?
- Is there a supported repair switch or offline installer?
If several applications fail or Windows displays unrelated system errors, broaden the investigation to DISM, SFC, Windows Update, System Restore, and malware checks. If only one old application fails, keep the investigation focused on that application and its installer.
Frequently asked questions
Is mfc42fra.dll a Windows system file?
It is a Microsoft file, but it is not expected to be a current Windows 10 or Windows 11 system component. It is a legacy MFC French localization resource normally supplied by an application installer.
Is mfc42fra.dll safe?
The genuine file is a Microsoft MFC localization component. A filename alone does not prove that a particular copy is genuine. Verify its source, path, installer, publisher, and antivirus status before restoring it.
Should I install the latest Visual C++ Redistributable?
Not as a generic fix. Current Visual C++ packages support newer runtime generations and are not a guaranteed source for the VC6 French resource file. Install the runtime required by the application, preferably through its original installer.
Should I install the VB6 runtime?
The VB6 runtime may be relevant to a Visual Basic 6 application, but it should not be assumed to restore mfc42fra.dll. Microsoft’s VB6 policy identifies localization binaries as files that the application setup must supply.
Should I install both x86 and x64 packages?
Install only the runtime packages required by the application. A 32-bit application needs x86 dependencies even on 64-bit Windows. Installing an x64 package does not replace a missing 32-bit legacy file.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Can Windows Update restore the file?
Windows Update can repair supported Windows components and general system problems, but it is not expected to download an application-specific mfc42fra.dll.
Should I run regsvr32?
Normally, no. mfc42fra.dll is a resource-only localization DLL, not normally a self-registering COM component.
Can I copy the file into System32?
Do not do this merely because a website recommends it. Use the original application installer and follow the publisher’s documented destination. Application-local installation is generally safer.
Why does the error mention a French file?
The application may use French resources, may have been built with multilingual support, or may load the resource during startup even when the visible interface is English.
Is mfc42fra.dll interchangeable with mfc42.dll?
No. mfc42.dll is a main MFC runtime library, while mfc42fra.dll is a French resource DLL. They serve different purposes and should not be substituted for one another.
What is the definitive fix?
Identify the application that requests the file and repair or reinstall that application from its original publisher or installation media. That gives you the best chance of restoring the matching 32-bit MFC localization file and all of its companion dependencies together.
