Gamma – PS 1 Game Emulator is a legitimate PlayStation 1 emulator available through Apple’s App Store for iPhone and iPad. It is free to download, but the app contains advertising and offers a $4.99 Gamma Pro ad-removal purchase in the U.S. storefront. Gamma does not include commercial games: you must import compatible game files that you have the right to use.
Since its May 2024 launch, Gamma has grown beyond a basic emulator. Its current App Store listing advertises save states, memory-card tools, controller support, local multiplayer, cloud synchronization, cheats, RetroAchievements, upscaling up to 8×, PGXP geometry correction, widescreen options and CRT shaders. The result is one of the simplest ways to play PS1 software on Apple mobile devices, though setup and compatibility still vary by game.

What is Gamma?
Gamma is a standalone PlayStation 1 emulator from ZODTTD LLC. Emulation recreates enough of the original console’s hardware behavior for compatible PlayStation software to run on an iPhone or iPad.

The App Store release matters because it provides a conventional installation route without jailbreaking or sideloading. However, it should not be described as the first emulator on iOS: the App Store-era emulation shift also includes projects such as Delta, which focuses primarily on Nintendo systems.
Gamma was initially reported on May 13, 2024, but launch coverage no longer tells the whole story. The current product has substantially more file, graphics, save-management and multiplayer features than the original release.
Requirements and availability
- iPhone: iOS 15.0 or later.
- iPad: iPadOS 15.0 or later.
- Mac: The listing also identifies support for Apple-silicon Macs, although Gamma’s main appeal here is mobile play.
- Price: Free download with advertising.
Meeting the operating-system requirement does not guarantee identical results on every device. Older iPhones and iPads may have less headroom for high rendering resolutions, and battery use, heat, controller behavior and game compatibility can vary.

Gamma is an emulator, not a store for PlayStation games. It does not provide a catalog of commercial titles, and installing the app alone will not create a playable library.
- Install Gamma from the App Store.
- Obtain a compatible game image that you have the legal right to use. Copyright and copying rules vary by jurisdiction.
- Move the file to your iPhone or iPad through Files, AirDrop, a browser download or a desktop transfer.
- Open or import the file in Gamma and allow the app to identify the game and retrieve artwork where available.
- Configure touch controls or connect a compatible controller.
- Start the game, then use normal in-game saves as well as emulator save states where appropriate.
Do not treat Gamma as a source of copyrighted ROMs or BIOS files. The emulator and the game data are separate, and users are responsible for the files they import.
Supported game-file formats
The current App Store listing advertises support for:
- CUE/BIN
- CHD
- PBP
- ISO
- MDS
- Multidisc games
- ZIP, RAR and ECM archives
- 7z archives for Gamma Pro users
Gamma can import a CUE file without requiring you to select every BIN track manually. Keep the CUE file and all referenced tracks together, and import the CUE rather than an individual BIN file. A supported extension alone does not guarantee that an image will boot: malformed archives, missing tracks and incorrect CUE paths can all cause failures.

Multidisc games require properly organized disc files and use of Gamma’s disc-swap function when the game requests the next disc. Preserve the original structure and keep backup copies before experimenting.
BIOS and SBI considerations
Gamma can run some games without a BIOS, but the experience is not equally plug-and-play for every title. The current listing says fewer games need a BIOS than before and includes tools to remove an imported BIOS, while also advertising BIOS synchronization through Gamma Sync. That means BIOS use remains game- and compatibility-dependent.
Some games may also need an SBI patch. Do not assume that Gamma supplies Sony BIOS files, and do not download copyrighted BIOS files from unauthorized sources.
Features that make Gamma useful
Save states and memory cards
Gamma supports save states, automatic progress saving and memory-card management. Newer features include per-game memory cards, memory-card import and export, and community sharing of saves and memory cards.

Save states are convenient, but they are not a replacement for ordinary in-game memory-card saves. A state can become unreliable after changing the game image, emulator version, graphics settings or patches. Important progress should be saved in-game and backed up by exporting the relevant memory card.
Graphics enhancements
Gamma advertises high-resolution rendering up to 8×, PGXP geometry correction, widescreen options, fullscreen landscape mode, CRT shaders and optional dithering effects.
These features improve presentation, but they do not turn original low-resolution artwork into modern assets. PGXP can reduce polygon warping in some 3D scenes while producing game-specific visual quirks. Widescreen modes may use patches or codes, which can distort a title or reveal areas never intended to be visible. CRT shaders are an aesthetic choice rather than a universal improvement.

“Up to 8×” is a maximum capability, not a performance guarantee. Lower settings may be preferable on older devices or during long sessions because higher rendering resolutions can increase heat and battery use.
Controls and accessories
Gamma supports portrait and landscape touch-controller skins, custom skins, analog controls, button remapping, vibration and L3/R3 controls in newer versions. The listing also names PlayStation, Xbox and MFi-compatible controllers, along with Bluetooth and wired keyboards.
Touch controls are adequate for short sessions, but a physical controller is the better choice for fighting games, racing games, precision platformers and titles requiring simultaneous inputs. Telescopic iPhone controllers are portable but may not fit every phone case. A separate Bluetooth controller is more practical for iPad or television play, while a wired controller can reduce wireless complexity at the cost of convenience.
Controller support is not identical to perfect mapping. Confirm that iOS or iPadOS recognizes the device, then check Gamma’s mapping if buttons or analog sticks behave incorrectly. Bluetooth keyboard support has seen fixes and regressions in version history, so it should not be treated as equally dependable on every setup.
Local multiplayer
Gamma’s update history and current listing describe local multiplayer for up to four players, including Multitap support. Multitap emulation defaults to two players and can be enabled from a game’s long-press menu where appropriate.
This is local multiplayer, not online matchmaking. You need multiple compatible controllers and a game that supports the relevant number of players. Screen mirroring can make an iPad or iPhone more suitable for group play on a television or external display, but wireless display latency may affect timing-sensitive games.
Cheats and RetroAchievements
The app includes an integrated cheat system and advertises RetroAchievements support. Cheat availability can differ by game, region, version and code format. Cheats and widescreen codes can also destabilize a game or corrupt saves, so make a backup first.

RetroAchievements generally involves an external account or service relationship. Check Gamma’s current sign-in flow inside the app, and do not assume that every PS1 game has an achievement set.
Cloud synchronization
Gamma advertises synchronization through Google Drive or Dropbox, and Gamma Sync can synchronize game saves and BIOS files. Some options let users sync only game saves to reduce storage use.
Cloud synchronization is useful when moving progress between devices, but it introduces account, privacy and conflict-resolution considerations. It does not necessarily mean that full game images are being synchronized. Users who play on one device may prefer local memory-card export, while anyone relying on sync should still keep periodic local backups.
What is free, and what does Gamma Pro add?
Gamma is free to download, but the U.S. App Store listing says it contains advertising. It lists Gamma Pro – Remove Ads at $4.99, plus optional supporter purchases priced at $0.99, $1.99, $4.99 and $9.99.
The current listing also says Gamma Pro enables 7z importing. Gamma Pro is presented as a one-time in-app purchase rather than a conventional subscription. The $4.99 price is verified for the U.S. storefront; taxes, regional pricing, promotions and availability can differ elsewhere.
For occasional players who already use ZIP, CHD, PBP or CUE/BIN files, the free version may be sufficient. Gamma Pro is more compelling for frequent players who want to remove ads or keep games in 7z archives. Purchasing it does not provide access to PlayStation games.

A game does not appear after import
- Confirm that the file is available locally in the Files app.
- Extract the archive if Gamma cannot read its contents.
- For CUE/BIN games, keep the CUE and every referenced track in the same folder.
- Import the CUE file, not individual BIN tracks.
- Try CHD or PBP if the original image is malformed.
- Check Gamma’s help or compatibility options, including legacy compatibility mode where available.
The game shows a black screen or crashes
Possible causes include a bad or incomplete dump, a missing or incompatible BIOS, a game-specific compatibility problem, a graphics enhancement conflict or a cheat/widescreen patch.

Start with a clean image. Disable cheats, widescreen, PGXP and experimental graphics options. Try another supported format or legacy compatibility mode. If a controller is connected, disconnect and reconnect it to rule out an input-device problem.
A multidisc game will not change discs
Import all discs correctly, use clear disc names and invoke Gamma’s disc-swap command when the game asks for the next disc. Avoid quitting the game or replacing the entire game entry during the swap. Back up the memory card before testing different disc arrangements.
A save state fails
Use the game’s normal save system as the primary record of progress. Export memory cards before changing game images or major settings, and do not assume a state created with one emulator version will remain valid forever after files or settings change.

Apple’s App Store privacy section says the developer indicates that Gamma may use identifiers for tracking across apps and websites owned by other companies. It also lists device ID, usage data, advertising data, purchases and user content for specified purposes. Apple notes that these privacy disclosures are provided by the developer and have not been verified by Apple.
Review Gamma’s privacy policy and service terms before enabling cloud synchronization or buying an ad-removal upgrade. Users who prefer a local-only setup can avoid optional cloud sync and export memory cards manually, but advertising-related data practices may still matter in the free version.
Gamma’s App Store availability does not settle the copyright status of every game image, BIOS file or backup workflow. Use software and firmware files you are legally permitted to use, and avoid ROM or BIOS download sites.
Gamma versus Delta
Delta is a broader iOS emulator centered on Nintendo systems, with features such as saves, cheats, synchronization and controller support. It is a useful choice for readers with Nintendo libraries, but it is not the natural substitute for a dedicated PS1 emulator.

Other emulator projects may be available depending on platform, region and current App Store policy, but their installation methods, supported systems and compatibility should be verified separately rather than assumed.
Is Gamma worth installing?
Gamma is a strong fit for iPhone and iPad owners who already have legally usable PS1 game images, want a normal App Store installation and prefer a dedicated emulator. It is particularly appealing with a physical controller, correctly prepared disc images and an iPad or external display for local multiplayer.
It is a weaker fit for anyone expecting a commercial game subscription, perfect compatibility without configuration, a completely ad-free free app, online multiplayer or a single emulator for every retro platform. The most important practical expectations are simple: prepare your files carefully, keep normal memory-card backups, lower graphics settings when necessary and disable enhancements when troubleshooting.
