However, Microsoft changed that strategy in 2026: future Call of Duty games will no longer be guaranteed day-one Game Pass releases.
Two milestones, not one
The original claim that Microsoft was “finally bringing” Call of Duty to Game Pass referred to Modern Warfare III, which was added to the catalog in July 2024. It was not the same announcement as the day-one launch of Black Ops 6.

That distinction matters because subscribing for Modern Warfare III never guaranteed immediate access to every subsequent Call of Duty game.

Microsoft completed its acquisition of Activision Blizzard in October 2023. Game Pass subscribers therefore expected major Activision franchises to become part of the service, but Microsoft did not immediately place the latest premium Call of Duty release in the catalog.

The hesitation was understandable. Game Pass can make a subscription more attractive by adding one of gaming’s biggest annual releases, but it can also shift some players away from full-price purchases. Call of Duty is also a multiplatform franchise, so the commercial calculation involves Xbox, PC, and PlayStation—not just Xbox console sales. Contemporary reporting discussed the tension, but estimates about lost sales or Microsoft’s internal calculations should not be treated as confirmed company figures.
Microsoft ultimately chose to add Modern Warfare III and then make Black Ops 6 a day-one Game Pass release, creating a significant subscription incentive.
What Game Pass included
Modern Warfare III arrived with its single-player campaign, multiplayer, and open-world Zombies mode. Black Ops 6 included access to the base game rather than automatically granting every premium product sold alongside it.
Game Pass access should not be confused with ownership of a Vault Edition or other premium upgrade. Subscribers may still need to purchase items such as:

Microsoft’s official store listings identify both games as containing in-game purchases. Your access to the base game also normally ends when the qualifying subscription entitlement ends, unless you buy the game separately.

Which plans included Black Ops 6?
At launch, Xbox positioned day-one Black Ops 6 access with Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Game Pass Standard was a console catalog plan, but it did not include new releases on day one.

Console, PC, and cloud access depend on the plan and the benefits available in the relevant region and period. Platforms and cloud gaming
At launch, Black Ops 6 was available on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, Steam, and Battle.net. Game Pass access applied according to platform: PC players needed PC Game Pass or Ultimate, while console access required a qualifying Xbox plan.
Beginning October 25, 2024, Xbox also made Black Ops 6, Modern Warfare III, and Warzone playable through Xbox Cloud Gaming for Ultimate members. Cloud gaming can be useful on supported phones, tablets, Samsung TVs, Amazon Fire TV devices, Meta Quest headsets, PCs, or consoles where downloading the full game is inconvenient. It still depends on regional availability, a stable connection, and acceptable latency; streaming can introduce input delay and image compression.
Warzone should not be described as a paid Game Pass game. It remains free to play; Game Pass provided cloud access and related benefits rather than making a purchase necessary.

Microsoft changed the policy in 2026
On April 21, 2026, Xbox announced that future Call of Duty releases would no longer join Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass on launch day. Instead, new games are expected to be added around the following holiday season—approximately one year after release. Games already in the Game Pass library would remain available under the announcement.
That means Black Ops 6 was a genuine day-one breakthrough, but it did not establish a permanent promise for every future entry. Anyone subscribing specifically for the next Call of Duty should check its listing rather than assume it will be available at launch.

At $22.99 per month, Ultimate is not automatically the cheapest long-term option for someone who plays only one game. A direct purchase costs more upfront but avoids recurring subscription payments and preserves access to the purchased edition, subject to the game’s online-service requirements. On the other hand, a short-term subscription can be better value for a campaign playthrough or for players who also use the broader Game Pass library.
The answer in one sentence
Microsoft did bring Call of Duty to Game Pass: Modern Warfare III was the first addition, Black Ops 6 was the first day-one launch, and the day-one promise for future releases was later withdrawn in 2026.
