“The program can’t start because microsoft.directx.directsound.dll is missing from your computer.”
You may also see “microsoft.directx.directsound.dll was not found,” “Error loading microsoft.directx.directsound.dll,” or a .NET BadImageFormatException.
The 60-second answer
microsoft.directx.directsound.dll is the lowercase filename commonly used for Microsoft.DirectX.DirectSound.dll, a legacy 32-bit managed .NET assembly from Managed DirectX 1.1. It is not normally a Windows system file.
Start by repairing or reinstalling the affected program from its original installer. If the error remains, install Microsoft’s official DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010), which includes the legacy Managed DirectX components. Do not download the DLL from a random file site or copy it into System32.

What this DLL actually is
The assembly provides managed .NET access to Microsoft’s older DirectSound audio API. Microsoft documents its assembly identity as Microsoft.DirectX.DirectSound, with a documented strong-name version of 1.0.900.0.
Windows includes the native DirectSound API, but that does not mean it includes this managed wrapper. The file is an optional legacy component associated with the application or runtime that installed it. Many older games, emulators, audio utilities, and .NET programs expect the assembly in the application’s own directory or through the installed Managed DirectX components.
The filename may appear in lowercase in an error message even when the physical file is named Microsoft.DirectX.DirectSound.dll. Windows file-name capitalization does not change which file it refers to.
This is also different from dsound.dll. The latter is a native Windows DirectSound component. Replacing or repairing dsound.dll will not normally restore a missing managed Microsoft.DirectX.DirectSound.dll.
Why the error appears
The usual causes are:
- The application was installed without its legacy prerequisites.
- A repair, update, or failed reinstall removed the assembly.
- Antivirus software quarantined the file.
- A cleanup utility or manual deletion removed application files.
- The application was copied to another computer without being installed.
- The program is being launched with the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- The application depends on older .NET behavior that is unavailable or incompatible on the current system.
If only one program reports the error, repair that program first. This is usually an application installation problem, not evidence that Windows itself is damaged.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the affected program
This is the safest and most likely solution because the program’s installer knows which assemblies, configuration files, and prerequisites belong together.
Microsoft Store or packaged app
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If Repair does not help, return to the same screen and select Reset. Reset can remove the application’s local data, so use it only when repairing does not work.
Traditional desktop program
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select the affected program.
- Choose Repair, Change, or Modify if the installer provides one.
- Complete the wizard and restart Windows.
- Test the program from its normal shortcut.
If no repair option exists, uninstall the program, restart the computer, and reinstall it using the developer’s original installer. If the installer includes a DirectX, Prerequisites, or Redist folder, run that component as part of the installation.

- Powerful downloadable software -- control panel software gives powerful Audio Enhancements and unprecedented control; Also includes optimized profiles for multiple earphone brands
- No drivers needed -- works straight out of the box
If you copied the program folder from another computer, remove it and perform a normal installation instead. Copying an executable and its visible files does not reliably install .NET assemblies or legacy runtime components.
Fix 2: Install the official June 2010 DirectX runtime
A newer DirectX version does not necessarily install older side-by-side components. The relevant Microsoft package is DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010).
Offline installation
- Download
directx_Jun2010_redist.exefrom Microsoft’s official DirectX End-User Runtimes page. - Right-click the downloaded file and select Run as administrator.
- Accept the license terms.
- Choose a temporary extraction folder when prompted.
- Open that folder in File Explorer.
- Right-click
DXSETUP.exe. - Select Run as administrator.
- Complete the setup.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the affected application again.
The offline package is useful when several computers need the same prerequisite or when the target computer has limited internet access.
Microsoft also provides the DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer, named dxwebsetup.exe. Use it when the computer can download the required components during setup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThis package adds optional legacy components. It does not replace or upgrade the DirectX core runtime built into Windows.
Fix 3: Verify the program’s files
Games and some launchers can restore missing application files without a full reinstall.
Open the launcher, select the affected game or program, and look for an option named Verify files, Verify integrity, Repair, or Scan and repair. The exact wording depends on the launcher.
After verification completes, restart the launcher and test the program. If verification reports files it cannot repair, uninstall and reinstall the application from its official installer.

Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
If the file existed previously and disappeared after an update, cleanup, or security scan, check whether Windows Security quarantined it.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand a detection related to the affected application.
- Confirm that the path belongs to the legitimate program.
- Restore it only when you trust the application and the detection is confirmed as a false positive.
Microsoft warns that restoring a genuine threat can put the computer at risk. If you are uncertain, do not restore the file. Remove the application and reinstall it from the developer’s official source instead.
Add an exclusion only after confirming that the application and installer are trustworthy. A safer approach is usually to reinstall the complete program so its files are restored consistently.
Fix 5: Correct the 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch
Managed DirectX 1.1 is 32-bit-only. A 64-bit version of Windows can run it, but the application itself must run as a 32-bit process.
A mismatch may produce messages such as:
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “The file is not a valid Win32 application.”
.NET System.BadImageFormatException.
For software you develop or can rebuild:
- Open the project in its development environment.
- Open the project’s build or compiler settings.
- Set Platform target to
x86. - Disable Prefer 32-bit if your environment exposes that setting separately and the application still launches incorrectly.
- Rebuild the program.
- Test the rebuilt executable.
For an existing program, use its 32-bit executable or obtain a compatible release from the application’s developer. Installing a supposed 64-bit copy of Microsoft.DirectX.DirectSound.dll is not a valid fix because Managed DirectX 1.1 does not provide a native x64 assembly.
Microsoft’s documentation on BadImageFormatException explains why an assembly or native dependency built for the wrong architecture cannot load.
Fix 6: Enable an older .NET feature if the application requires it
Some obsolete applications require older .NET Framework components in addition to Managed DirectX. Do not enable features at random, but check the program’s documentation or installer for a stated requirement.
To check Windows Features:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
optionalfeaturesand press Enter. - Look for .NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0).
- Select it only if the application requires it.
- Select OK.
- Allow Windows to download and install the feature if prompted.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
Installing .NET 3.5 does not replace Managed DirectX. If the DLL itself is missing, install the June 2010 DirectX runtime and repair the application as well.

Managed DirectX 1.1 is deprecated and was designed for older .NET environments. If an application still fails after installing its required framework and runtime, it may need a vendor-supplied configuration or an older supported environment.
Fix 7: Update audio and chipset drivers only when other symptoms exist
A driver update will not normally recreate this managed assembly. Consider drivers only if the application also reports missing audio devices, distorted sound, DirectSound initialization failures, or device errors.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the audio device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
- Repeat for relevant chipset devices under System devices if the computer manufacturer provides a newer driver.
For the safest result, download drivers from the computer or audio-device manufacturer. Avoid forcing a driver onto an unknown device.
Manually checking several hardware vendors and comparing versions can be time-consuming. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is not required, and reinstalling the affected program remains the definitive fix for this DLL.

Fix 8: Repair Windows components only as a conditional step
Because this is normally an application-owned managed assembly, System File Checker will not reliably recreate it. Use Windows repair commands when multiple Windows components are failing or Windows reports component-store corruption.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run this command separately:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
Microsoft explains that DISM repairs the Windows component store and SFC checks protected Windows resources. Neither command should be expected to restore a private application assembly.
Repeatedly running repair commands without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slower. Outbyte PC Repair can provide a free scan showing detected issues, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the program is still the correct remedy when only this application is affected.

Do not run:
regsvr32 microsoft.directx.directsound.dll
regsvr32 is intended for native DLLs that expose the COM DllRegisterServer entry point. A managed .NET assembly is normally loaded by the CLR and does not need this type of registration. The command commonly produces a registration error and does not repair the missing assembly.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
A standalone download can have the wrong architecture, strong name, version, dependencies, or malicious modifications. Even a genuine file may not fix the problem if the application is missing other assemblies or configuration files.

Use the affected program’s official installer and Microsoft’s official June 2010 DirectX redistributable instead. Never treat an unverified DLL copy as a substitute for repairing the complete installation.
When to contact the application developer
Contact the developer when:
- The official installer still omits the assembly.
- The program requires an old .NET configuration.
- Only a vendor-supplied 32-bit executable can load the legacy runtime.
- The application fails after every repair and reinstall.
- The developer provides a patched release or compatibility instructions.
If the software is obsolete and unsupported on current Windows versions, use the vendor’s supported runtime and configuration if available. Otherwise, replacing the application may be more reliable than modifying Windows files.

FAQ
Is microsoft.directx.directsound.dll a Windows system file?
Normally no. It is a legacy managed DirectX assembly associated with an application or optional DirectX component, not a file that should ordinarily be repaired from System32.
Is there a 64-bit version?
No supported 64-bit Managed DirectX 1.1 assembly should be expected. The application must run as 32-bit, even on 64-bit Windows.
Will installing the latest DirectX fix the error?
Not necessarily. Install Microsoft’s legacy DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010) package because newer DirectX installations do not automatically provide every older side-by-side component.
Recommended Free Tools
Can SFC restore this DLL?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows resources, while this assembly is generally installed for an application.
Why does regsvr32 fail?
The file is a managed .NET assembly, not normally a COM DLL with the registration entry point required by regsvr32.
Should I install both 32-bit and 64-bit copies?
No. Managed DirectX 1.1 is 32-bit-only. Use a compatible 32-bit application executable.
What if the message says “not a valid Win32 application”?
Check for a 32-bit/64-bit mismatch and BadImageFormatException. Reinstalling a random copy of the DLL will not correct an application compiled for the wrong architecture.
