windows.immersiveshell.serviceprovider.dll: Windows Shell Repair

“The code execution cannot proceed because windows.immersiveshell.serviceprovider.dll was not found.” “The program can’t start because windows.immersiveshell.serviceprovider.dll is missing from your computer.” You may also see that windows.immersiveshell.serviceprovider.dll could not be loaded, is not designed to run on Windows, or contains an error.

The 60-second answer

windows.immersiveshell.serviceprovider.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system component associated with the immersive shell and Windows user interface. It normally resides at:

C:WindowsSystem32windows.immersiveshell.serviceprovider.dll

Do not download an isolated replacement from a DLL-sharing site. First install pending Windows updates, restart, then repair Windows with these commands from an elevated Command Prompt:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
sfc /scannow

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM repairs the component store that SFC uses to restore protected Windows files. See Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance.

If the file exists and Explorer, Start, the taskbar, or an RDP session still crashes, the DLL may only be the module named in the crash record. The underlying fault may instead involve Windows servicing, a shell extension, a driver, RDP policy, or a damaged user profile.

What this DLL belongs to

The file’s embedded description is generally Windows.ImmersiveShell.ServiceProvider. Microsoft Windows crash traces and support reports show it loaded by explorer.exe alongside other shell components.

It is not:

  • A Visual C++ Redistributable file
  • A DirectX runtime
  • A .NET runtime
  • Game middleware
  • A device-driver component
  • A normal third-party application dependency

Public Windows file inventories show different versions across Windows builds, including Windows 8.1, Windows 10, Windows 11, and Windows Server. A 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation can contain a 64-bit copy, while older Windows releases also had 32-bit variants. There is no single universal version or file size that applies to every computer.

Why Windows reports this error

The message can have several meanings:

  • The protected file is genuinely absent.
  • Windows component-store corruption prevents the file from being restored.
  • An update was interrupted or incompletely installed.
  • Antivirus software quarantined the file.
  • A dependent Windows component is missing.
  • The DLL exists, but Windows cannot load it because of corruption or an architecture mismatch.
  • Explorer crashed and merely recorded this DLL as the faulting module.

“The specified module could not be found” is especially ambiguous. It can mean that a dependency required by the named DLL is missing, not necessarily that windows.immersiveshell.serviceprovider.dll itself is absent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The problem may begin after Windows Update, a feature upgrade, cleanup software, antivirus activity, a graphics or input-driver installation, malware removal, or changes to an RDP environment.

Check the file before repairing it

Confirm the location

  1. Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer.
  2. Select the address bar.
  3. Enter:

text
C:WindowsSystem32

  1. Search for:

text
windows.immersiveshell.serviceprovider.dll

A copy in System32 is consistent with the normal Windows location. Do not assume that a similarly named file in Downloads, Temp, an application folder, or another unexpected directory is legitimate.

Check the Microsoft signature

  1. Right-click the file and select Properties.
  2. Open the Digital Signatures tab.
  3. Select the signature and choose Details.
  4. Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and identifies Microsoft as the signer.

If the file has no valid Microsoft signature, is located outside the Windows directory, or has a publisher you do not recognize, do not replace it manually. Run a malware investigation first.

Check the architecture carefully

A 32-bit application running on 64-bit Windows does not justify copying a 32-bit DLL into System32. Windows architecture, build, and servicing state must all match. Copying a file from another computer can create a version mismatch even when the filenames are identical.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart

A failed or incomplete update is one of the most practical explanations for a missing or damaged protected system file.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Choose Windows Update.
  4. Select Check for updates.
  5. Install every available update.
  6. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not insist on restarting.
  7. Test Explorer, Start, the taskbar, or the affected program again.

Microsoft’s current instructions are available in its guide to installing Windows updates.

On supported Windows 11 systems, you may also see a repair option:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Choose Recovery.
  4. Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
  5. Select Reinstall now.

This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving personal files, installed applications, and settings. Keep the computer connected to power and do not interrupt the process.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

Run both commands from an elevated Command Prompt.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:

bat
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

  1. Wait for DISM to finish. This can take time and may appear paused.
  2. Then run:

bat
sfc /scannow

  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows and test the original symptom.

SFC results generally fall into these useful categories:

  • Did not find any integrity violations: Windows did not detect corruption in protected files.
  • Found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test again.
  • Found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Run DISM again after confirming that Windows Update works, then rerun SFC.
  • Could not perform the requested operation: Restart into Safe Mode and run SFC there.

If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, it may require a matching Windows installation source. Microsoft documents the /Source and /LimitAccess options in its guide to repairing a Windows image.

The manual process requires interpreting several result messages and repeating commands without always knowing what changed. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that shows what it identifies; repairs are performed by the full version. It is optional, and Windows DISM/SFC remain the appropriate built-in repair path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine

Windows Defender or another antivirus product may have quarantined a genuine system file, although a familiar filename alone is not proof that a detection is false.

For Microsoft Defender:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security and open it.
  3. Select Virus & threat protection.
  4. Choose Protection history.
  5. Review detections involving the DLL or the System32 directory.
  6. Examine the detection name, original path, date, and action taken.

Restore the file only when the original path, valid Microsoft signature, and detection history support that decision. Microsoft warns that Defender may detect the file again after restoration. If the detection appears credible, leave it quarantined and run a full or offline scan using Microsoft’s Defender scan guidance.

Third-party antivirus products use different menus. Check their quarantine or protection history and do not disable protection merely to force a DLL replacement.

Fix 4: Diagnose Explorer, Start, taskbar, or RDP crashes

If the error appeared as an application startup message and the file is absent, continue with Windows repair. If Event Viewer says explorer.exe crashed and lists this DLL as the faulting module, use a different approach.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

A faulting-module entry identifies where Windows recorded the failure. It does not prove that the named DLL caused the original problem. Microsoft support cases have reported this DLL in Explorer crashes on Windows 10, Windows 11, Windows Server, and older Windows versions.

Check these areas:

Test a new Windows profile

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Accounts.
  3. Choose Other users or Family & other users.
  4. Select Add account.
  5. Create a local test account.
  6. Sign into that account.
  7. Test Explorer, Start, and the taskbar.

If the problem affects only one account, the system DLL may be healthy and the original profile or shell state may be damaged. Repair or migrate that profile rather than replacing a protected Windows file.

Review shell extensions and recent software

Temporarily remove or disable recently installed Explorer integrations, context-menu tools, archive utilities, sync clients, antivirus shell extensions, and customization software. Reboot after each meaningful change.

If the crash began after a driver installation, continue with the driver steps below. If it occurs only during RDP sessions, inspect RDP policies, session state, profile loading, and shell extensions on the server. A local desktop test and an RDP test can reveal whether the failure is session-specific.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check Reliability Monitor

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Enter:

text
perfmon /rel

  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select the red failure markers on the dates when the crashes occurred.
  3. Record the application name, faulting module, exception code, and whether the issue began after an update or installation.

Also inspect Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application for matching explorer.exe errors.

Fix 5: Update or roll back a related driver

Graphics, input, display, and remote-session drivers can affect the Windows shell even when the crash report names a system DLL.

  4. Right-click the recently changed device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Open the Driver tab.
  7. Use Update Driver if the current driver is old or incomplete.
  8. Use Roll Back Driver if the problem began immediately after an update and the option is available.
  9. Restart Windows and test again.

Download drivers from the computer manufacturer, motherboard manufacturer, or the hardware vendor. Do not use a random DLL to compensate for a damaged driver installation.

Manually checking each hardware category and matching driver versions can be tedious. Outbyte Driver Updater offers a free scan that identifies what it finds; driver installation is performed by the full version. It is optional, and the manufacturer’s driver package remains the safest choice when a specific device is known.

Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change

If the failure started after an update, driver installation, cleanup operation, or software change, System Restore may return system files and registry settings to an earlier state without deleting personal documents.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Create a restore point.
  3. Open the result.
  4. Select System Restore.
  5. Choose a restore point created before the failure.
  6. Review the affected programs.
  7. Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.

Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore documentation.

Fix 7: Perform an in-place Windows repair

Use official Windows installation media when DISM and SFC cannot repair the component or Windows remains unstable.

Start the installation from within the existing Windows desktop, then explicitly select the option to keep personal files and applications. Do not select a clean installation unless you have backed up your data and intend to remove the existing Windows installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft’s installation-media guidance explains the available choices. Resetting the PC or performing a clean installation is more disruptive and should come later.

Do not use Regsvr32 for this DLL

regsvr32 is a COM registration tool. It applies to DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer; it is not a general missing-DLL repair command. Microsoft documents its purpose in the Regsvr32 reference.

Do not run:

regsvr32 windows.immersiveshell.serviceprovider.dll

This Windows shell DLL is not established as a self-registering component. The command will not restore a missing file and may produce an error that sends troubleshooting in the wrong direction.

If the problem remains

Work through this final checklist:

  • Confirm whether the file is absent or merely named in a crash report.
  • Verify the path is C:WindowsSystem32.
  • Check the Microsoft digital signature.
  • Install updates and restart.
  • Run DISM, then SFC.
  • Review antivirus Protection history.
  • Test a new local profile.
  • Check Reliability Monitor for the actual crashing process.
  • Investigate recent shell extensions, graphics drivers, RDP policies, and updates.
  • Use System Restore if an earlier restore point exists.
  • Perform an in-place repair installation if Windows servicing remains damaged.

If a separate program names another DLL such as vcruntime140.dll, repair that program or its named runtime independently. There is no evidence that Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET packages provide windows.immersiveshell.serviceprovider.dll.

FAQ

Is windows.immersiveshell.serviceprovider.dll a Windows file?

Yes. It is a Microsoft Windows system DLL associated with the immersive shell and user-interface infrastructure.

Should I download it from a DLL website?

No. An unofficial file may contain malware, target the wrong Windows build, use the wrong architecture, or leave the damaged Windows component store unrepaired.

Does Windows always have a copy in SysWOW64?

Do not assume that every installation has a matching copy there. The documented normal location is C:WindowsSystem32, and Windows versions and architectures differ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does Event Viewer blame this DLL when Explorer crashes?

The faulting module is where Windows recorded the failure. It may not be the original cause. Shell extensions, drivers, profiles, RDP configuration, and Windows corruption can all be involved.

Will reinstalling a game fix this file?

There is no verified association between this DLL and a particular game or third-party application. If the file is missing from Windows, repair Windows first. If another error identifies a genuine application-owned DLL, repair or reinstall that specific application from its official installer.

What if SFC says everything is fine?

Check whether the file exists, verify its signature, and inspect the crash details. If only one user profile or RDP session is affected, test the profile and session environment instead of repeating DLL commands.
