microsoft.dism.powershell.resources.dll: Restore the Dism Module

You may see errors such as microsoft.dism.powershell.resources.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded. The file belongs to Microsoft’s built-in Dism PowerShell module, which provides PowerShell commands for servicing Windows images.

It is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, game component, or ordinary third-party application DLL. The safest fix is to repair Windows component files rather than download a replacement file.

The 60-second answer

  1. Open Command Prompt as administrator.
  2. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Open Windows PowerShell 5.1 and test:
Import-Module Dism -Verbose
Get-Command -Module Dism

If the module loads and its commands appear, the repair worked. If the error occurs in WinPE, an imaging workstation, or an ADK-based tool, repair or reinstall the matching Windows ADK instead.

Do not download microsoft.dism.powershell.resources.dll from a random DLL website, copy it into an application folder, or register it with regsvr32.

What causes this error

The complete error and the program that displays it matter. Common causes include:

  • Corrupted or incomplete Windows component files
  • A damaged or deleted Dism PowerShell module
  • Antivirus quarantine or unauthorized modification
  • A mismatched Windows ADK or incomplete WinPE environment
  • A wrong PSModulePath
  • 32-bit and 64-bit PowerShell using different module locations
  • A missing language resource directory
  • Another dependency being reported indirectly as “the specified module could not be found”

The wording does not always prove that this particular resource DLL is the defective file. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by the module.

Where the file normally belongs

The inbox Windows PowerShell module is normally located here:

C:WindowsSystem32WindowsPowerShellv1.0ModulesDism

Language resources are normally inside a language-specific subfolder, such as en, en-US, or another installed language. The exact folder depends on the Windows installation and language resources.

On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit Windows PowerShell can use a redirected path beneath SysWOW64. Do not copy files between System32 and SysWOW64 manually.

Microsoft documents the Dism module as part of Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016 and later supported Windows environments. See Microsoft’s DISM PowerShell documentation.

Fix 1: Repair Windows component files

This is the most likely solution for a normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 1: Install pending Windows updates

  1. Press Windows + I.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Click Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart if Windows requests it.

Then open an elevated Command Prompt:

  1. Press Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.

Run these commands one at a time:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow

CheckHealth performs a quick check. ScanHealth performs a deeper scan. RestoreHealth repairs the Windows component store, and SFC replaces protected system files using that repaired store.

When each command finishes, read its final message. A successful repair usually reports that the restore operation completed successfully, or that Windows Resource Protection found and repaired corrupted files.

Restart Windows and test the module:

Import-Module Dism -Verbose
Get-Command -Module Dism

Microsoft’s Windows image repair guidance and System File Checker documentation describe this repair process.

If manually identifying the damaged component and repeating SFC and DISM is becoming difficult, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what needs attention; the free scan identifies issues, while repair features require the full version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If /RestoreHealth fails

If DISM says that source files could not be found, do not download the DLL separately. Use matching Windows installation media as a repair source. The source must correspond closely to the installed Windows release, edition, language, and architecture.

Microsoft documents the /Source and /LimitAccess options in its repair instructions. A mismatched source can produce additional servicing errors.

After a successful DISM repair, run:

sfc /scannow

Then restart and test Import-Module Dism again.

Fix 2: Verify the Dism module and PowerShell architecture

Test the inbox module from Windows PowerShell 5.1, not only PowerShell 7.

  1. Press Start.
  2. Search for Windows PowerShell.
  3. Open it normally, or choose Run as administrator if the failing task requires elevation.
  4. Run:
$PSVersionTable
Get-Module -ListAvailable Dism
Import-Module Dism -Verbose
Get-Command -Module Dism
$env:PSModulePath -split ';'
Test-Path "$env:windirSystem32WindowsPowerShellv1.0ModulesDism"

The Test-Path command should normally return True. Get-Module -ListAvailable Dism should show the module if Windows PowerShell can find it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the module exists but cannot be imported:

  • Check the full verbose error for another missing dependency.
  • Confirm that the module path has not been replaced by a user-level setting.
  • Test from an elevated administrative account.
  • Compare the result in 64-bit Windows PowerShell and 32-bit Windows PowerShell.
  • Avoid manually editing module files.

PowerShell 7 has separate module locations and can use some Windows PowerShell modules through compatibility features. For this inbox module, Windows PowerShell 5.1 is the clearest diagnostic environment. Microsoft explains module search paths in its PSModulePath documentation.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software may have removed or quarantined a damaged or altered module file.

In Windows Security:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open it.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Look for an event involving the Dism module or the reported DLL.
  7. Record the detected path and action.

Do not restore a file merely because its name matches. A legitimate copy should be in the Windows PowerShell Dism module directory and should be confirmed as a Microsoft file. If the file was located in a game, download, temporary, or unrelated application folder, leave it quarantined.

The safer response is to run Windows component repair and a full security scan. If you suspect unauthorized modification, use Virus & threat protection → Scan options → Microsoft Defender Offline scan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: Repair an ADK or WinPE installation

The normal Windows module and an imaging workstation are not always repaired in the same way.

The Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit, or ADK, is used for deployment tools and supported WinPE workflows. If the error occurs while creating WinPE media, servicing an offline image, or running deployment automation, check the ADK installation.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Search for Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit.
  5. If it is present, select its menu and choose Uninstall if repair is unavailable.
  6. Download the ADK from Microsoft’s official ADK installation page.
  7. Install the ADK version intended for the Windows release being deployed.
  8. Install the separate Windows PE add-on when your workflow requires WinPE.
  9. Select the required deployment tools during setup.
  10. Rebuild the media or rerun the deployment task.

Do not mix module files from different Windows releases, ADK versions, languages, or architectures. A repair to the host operating system does not necessarily repair a separate deployment environment.

If the error appears only inside a captured image or WinPE session, test the host Windows installation and the deployment environment separately.

Fix 5: Check the language and module folders

A resource DLL can be present in the main module but missing from the language folder expected by the current installation.

In Windows PowerShell, run:

$modulePath = "$env:windirSystem32WindowsPowerShellv1.0ModulesDism"
Get-ChildItem -LiteralPath $modulePath -Recurse -Filter "Microsoft.Dism.PowerShell.resources.dll"

If the command returns a path, note whether it is beneath an installed language directory. If it returns nothing, do not copy a file from another computer. Repair Windows or the matching ADK instead.

Also check whether the error occurs only for one user:

  1. Sign in with another administrative account.
  2. Open Windows PowerShell 5.1.
  3. Run Import-Module Dism.
  4. Compare the result.

If only one profile fails, compare:

[Environment]::GetEnvironmentVariable("PSModulePath", "User")
[Environment]::GetEnvironmentVariable("PSModulePath", "Machine")

A user-level path that overrides or omits Windows module locations may need correction. Repairing the system module is preferable to placing a duplicate copy in the user profile.

Fix 6: Update drivers only when the complete error points there

This DLL is not normally a hardware driver file. Device Manager and driver updates are relevant only when the same imaging or deployment operation also reports a device-driver failure.

To check:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the category related to the failing hardware.
  4. Right-click the device with a warning icon.
  5. Select Properties and read the Device status message.
  6. Select Driver → Update Driver.
  7. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  8. Restart if Windows installs an update.

If Windows cannot identify the correct driver, obtain it from the computer or device manufacturer’s official support channel. Do not treat a driver problem as proof that Microsoft.Dism.PowerShell.resources.dll itself is missing.

When several deployment drivers must be checked and identifying stale versions manually is becoming repetitive, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show driver issues; the free scan identifies problems, while driver installation features require the full version.

Why you should not use regsvr32

regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide COM registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. The Dism PowerShell resource DLL is not normally a self-registering COM server.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Running a command such as this is not a repair:

regsvr32 Microsoft.Dism.PowerShell.resources.dll

It can produce a misleading registration error and does not restore the PowerShell module, its language resources, or the Windows component store.

Why DLL download sites are unsafe

A downloaded replacement can have the wrong:

  • Windows build
  • Language
  • Architecture
  • Digital signature
  • Dependencies

It may also be modified or placed in a directory where another program loads it unexpectedly. Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, a game folder, or an application directory can create a second problem without repairing Windows.

Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, the matching installation source, or the official Microsoft ADK instead.

Advanced information to collect if the error remains

If repair does not work, capture the complete error rather than only the filename. Also record:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
$PSVersionTable
Get-Module -ListAvailable Dism
$env:PSModulePath -split ';'

Note whether the failure occurs in:

  • Windows PowerShell 5.1
  • PowerShell 7
  • A scheduled task
  • An installer
  • WinPE
  • An offline image
  • A third-party imaging application

The relevant logs are commonly:

C:WindowsLogsDISMdism.log
C:WindowsLogsCBSCBS.log

If the full message names a different DLL or dependency, troubleshoot that component instead of assuming the resource DLL is the root cause.

FAQ

Is microsoft.dism.powershell.resources.dll a Windows file?

Yes. It is associated with Microsoft’s Windows PowerShell Dism module and its localized resources.

Is it safe to download this DLL separately?

No. A standalone download may not match Windows, may be unsafe, and may not contain the dependency that caused the error. Repair Windows or the matching ADK.

Should I install Visual C++ Redistributable or DirectX?

Not as the normal fix. This file is associated with the Dism PowerShell module, not those runtime packages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does regsvr32 fix it?

No. Registering this resource DLL is not the appropriate repair.

Why does PowerShell 7 fail while Windows PowerShell works?

PowerShell 7 uses different module paths and compatibility behavior. Test the inbox module in Windows PowerShell 5.1 first, then inspect PSModulePath and the complete PowerShell 7 error.

What if SFC says it could not repair files?

Run DISM /RestoreHealth first, then run sfc /scannow again. If DISM cannot find source files, provide matching Windows installation media using Microsoft’s documented source options.
