d3dscache.dll is a legitimate Microsoft Windows component used by the Direct3D graphics stack. When Windows or a game reports that d3dscache.dll is missing, not found, corrupted, or unable to load, repair Windows first instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
What d3dscache.dll is

A crash report can mention D3DSCache.dll simply because the graphics stack was active when the application failed. The named module is not automatically the cause.
First, identify the type of error
A startup message such as these points toward a missing or damaged file or dependency:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- “The program can’t start because d3dscache.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because d3dscache.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting d3dscache.dll.”
- “d3dscache.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “D3DSCache.dll is corrupted.”
A game crash with no missing-file dialog is different. In that case, the likely areas include game files, graphics drivers, overlays, modifications, shader caches, or an application defect. Continue with the repair sequence, but do not assume the Windows DLL is defective merely because a crash report names it.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Because d3dscache.dll belongs to Windows, start with Windows servicing.
Windows 11
- Select Start.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install everything offered.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not insist on restarting.
Windows 10
- Select Start.
- Open Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the available updates and restart.
Try the affected program again. If the message remains, continue with DISM and System File Checker. Do not download an older version simply because its version number appears in a search result.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then uses that repaired source to replace damaged protected system files. Run DISM first.

- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the application again.
SFC may report that it found and repaired corrupted files. That is a good result. It may also report that no integrity violations were found, which means the problem may be limited to the application, its dependencies, or the graphics driver.

If DISM reports that the source files could not be found, install pending Windows updates, restart, and repeat the commands. If servicing still fails, use Microsoft’s Windows recovery or in-place repair options rather than inserting an isolated DLL.
Repeatedly hunting for a damaged component and rerunning SFC or DISM without knowing what changed can be time-consuming. Outbyte PC Repair offers a free scan that shows reported problems, while repair is performed by the full version; it is optional, and Windows Update plus DISM and SFC remain the supported first-line path.
Fix 3: Repair the affected game or application
If only one game or program displays the error, Windows may be healthy. The application could have a damaged installation, missing dependency, incompatible modification, or unusable shader cache.

Xbox app or Microsoft Store
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Select the application’s menu button.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair does not help, select Reset only if you are comfortable with the app’s local data being cleared.
Other launchers may call the same function Verify files, Repair, or Scan and repair. Use the launcher’s built-in feature rather than copying d3dscache.dll into the game folder.
If verification does not help, uninstall the affected application, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the developer or publisher’s official installer. For a single affected game, this is often more relevant than reinstalling DirectX or Visual C++.
Fix 4: Repair the graphics driver
A Direct3D crash may involve the graphics driver even when the report names D3DSCache.dll.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For the most reliable result, obtain the current supported driver from NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, or the computer manufacturer. If the problem began immediately after a driver update:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the adapter and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver if that button is available.
- Restart and test the application.
Overlays and modifications can also trigger graphics-stack crashes. Temporarily disable game overlays, recording tools, graphics tuning utilities, and mods. If the game then works, re-enable them one at a time to identify the conflict.
Manually checking several graphics vendors and matching driver packages can mean guessing which of many installed components is stale. Outbyte Driver Updater provides a free scan showing reported driver issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional, and the hardware manufacturer’s supported driver remains the preferred source.
Fix 5: Check shader caches and application data
If there is no missing-DLL dialog and the failure began after a driver or game update, the shader cache may be damaged.

First, close the game and its launcher. Then use the game’s own settings or launcher repair function to clear or rebuild its shader cache if that option exists. Some graphics drivers also provide a shader-cache setting in their control panel. Do not delete random Windows system files.
If a game supports a safe mode or clean configuration, use it to test without custom graphics settings, mods, or overlays. A successful launch in that mode indicates an application configuration or rendering conflict rather than proof that d3dscache.dll is missing.
Fix 6: Review antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine a legitimate file after a mistaken detection or after corruption is detected.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
D3DSCache.dll. - Do not restore it unless the file is in the normal Windows directory and its Microsoft digital signature can be verified.
- Run a Full scan after reviewing the event.
For another security product, open its quarantine or detection history. Do not disable protection just to make a game start, and do not restore a DLL from an unknown location. If the file appeared in a temporary folder or an unrelated application directory, run a full scan and investigate that program.
Fix 7: Check the file location and signature
A genuine Windows copy should be in a Windows system directory. To inspect it:
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- Enter
%windir%System32in the address bar. - Search for
D3DSCache.dll. - Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
- Confirm that the signer is Microsoft and inspect the signature details.
On 64-bit Windows, also check %windir%SysWOW64 when a 32-bit application is affected. The absence of one architecture’s file is not automatically a problem on every Windows installation.
If the file exists but the application still says “module not found,” another dependency may be missing. The message can identify the requested DLL even when a dependent module is the actual failure. Repair the application, its supported runtimes, and the graphics driver instead of replacing D3DSCache.dll.
Why Visual C++ and legacy DirectX usually do not fix this
The Visual C++ Redistributable supplies Microsoft C and C++ runtime libraries. It may repair a different error naming files such as MSVC runtime DLLs, but d3dscache.dll is not a Visual C++ Redistributable file.

Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer, dxwebsetup.exe, installs legacy side-by-side components such as older D3DX, XAudio, XInput, and XACT libraries. It does not replace the core Direct3D runtime that Windows services.
Install either package only when the application specifically reports a dependency from that package or its official instructions require it. Neither should be the first repair for a missing Windows d3dscache.dll.
Why regsvr32 is not the fix
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. d3dscache.dll is a Windows graphics runtime component, not a general-purpose COM control that should be registered manually.
Running a command such as this is not an appropriate repair:
regsvr32 d3dscache.dll
A “DllRegisterServer entry point was not found” message would be expected when a DLL does not support that registration method. Use Windows Update, DISM, and SFC instead.

What not to do
Do not download d3dscache.dll from a random DLL website and copy it into System32, SysWOW64, or a game directory. An isolated download can contain malware, use the wrong architecture, belong to a different Windows build, fail because another dependency is missing, or interfere with Windows servicing.
Do not treat the historical 10.0.17134.1 listing as the required current version. Do not copy an x86 file into System32 or an x64 file into SysWOW64. Do not overwrite a signed Windows file with an unsigned replacement.
The safe sources are Windows Update, DISM and SFC, Windows recovery tools, the affected application’s official installer, and graphics drivers from the hardware manufacturer.

If the problem continues
Use Reliability Monitor to compare the failure with recent driver, Windows, or application changes:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
perfmon /rel. - Press Enter.
- Select the red failure marker for the affected date.
- Open the technical details.
- Note the application name, exception code, and faulting module.
Event Viewer can provide additional context:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Review the event at the failure time.
A faulting module is evidence for investigation, not proof of cause. If the failure began after a known Windows or driver change, consider System Restore. If Windows component repair remains broken across multiple applications, use Microsoft’s supported recovery or in-place repair process. Contact the application publisher when only one program fails after Windows and driver repairs.
FAQ
Is d3dscache.dll safe?
It is a legitimate Microsoft Windows file when it is located in a Windows system directory and digitally signed by Microsoft. A copy in a temporary, download, or unrelated application folder deserves a security scan.
Should I download d3dscache.dll?
No. Repair the Windows component with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC. Manual downloads can be malicious, mismatched, or unable to solve the real dependency problem.
Does reinstalling Visual C++ fix it?
Usually not. Visual C++ Redistributable provides MSVC runtime libraries, while d3dscache.dll belongs to Windows’ Direct3D graphics stack.
Should I install DirectX again?
The legacy DirectX End-User Runtime does not replace the core Direct3D runtime included with Windows. Use it only when an application specifically requires its older side-by-side components.
Why does a crash report mention D3DSCache.dll when the file exists?
The DLL may have been active when the graphics operation failed. The actual cause may be a driver, overlay, mod, shader cache, application bug, or another dependency.
Can I register the DLL with regsvr32?
No. regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair tool and is not appropriate for this Windows graphics component.
