Microsoft Edge’s in-game browser is available to eligible Windows 11 users. It is now branded Edge for Game Bar; Microsoft’s support pages still call it Game Assist. The feature opens as a compact Xbox Game Bar widget over a PC game, so you can browse without switching to a desktop window. “Available to everyone” does not mean every Windows PC: Microsoft’s documented baseline is Windows 11 version 22H2 or later, Edge 137 or later, and current Windows and Game Bar updates.
What Edge for Game Bar does
Edge for Game Bar is an Edge-powered browser widget in Xbox Game Bar, not a separate full-size browser. Open a webpage over a running game to check a walkthrough, look up a build or map, visit Discord or Twitch, or play music and video. You can move and resize the widget, pin it so it stays visible after Game Bar closes, and adjust its transparency when pinned. Microsoft also describes a picture-in-picture-style way to keep video visible while playing.
The widget can use Edge browsing data, including favorites, history, cookies, form fills, passwords, and profiles. That does not make it a shared tab window: desktop Edge tabs do not automatically appear in Game Assist, and widget tabs do not automatically appear in desktop Edge. You can use Game Assist even if Edge is not your default desktop browser, though Edge users have the most direct access to their Edge data. When it became available, and what it is called
Microsoft introduced Game Assist as an Insider preview on November 22, 2024, expanded the preview to the Edge Stable channel on January 21, 2025, then announced worldwide general availability on May 29, 2025. Microsoft now markets the product as Edge for Game Bar, while its support documentation continues to use the earlier Game Assist name.

Requirements: what “available to everyone” means
Microsoft’s support FAQ specifies Windows 11 version 22H2 or later. The product page lists Windows 11 Home, Education, and Pro, and says the feature is included with Microsoft Edge 137 or later. Both Windows and Xbox Game Bar need their latest available updates. Microsoft says other Windows 11 editions can install the widget through Edge settings. Availability and functionality may still vary by device, market, and browser version; the worldwide announcement was not a claim that the feature works on every computer.
- Windows 11, version 22H2 or later, with current updates
- Microsoft Edge version 137 or later
- The latest Xbox Game Bar updates
- A PC game running, with Game Bar enabled
It does not require an Edge Insider build. Check Microsoft’s FAQ and product page for current eligibility details.

How to open and pin the browser
- Update Windows: open Settings > Windows Update and install available updates.
- Update Edge: in Edge, select Settings and more (…), then Help and feedback > About Microsoft Edge. Install an available update and restart Edge.
- Update Game Bar: check for updates through the Microsoft Store or Xbox app if the widget is missing or reports that an update is required.
- Start a PC game and press Win+G to open Xbox Game Bar.
- Open the browser widget: select Game Assist or Edge for Game Bar, depending on the label shown on your PC.
- Keep it visible: select the pin icon in the widget title bar. To stop the widget staying over the game, reopen Game Bar and select Unpin.
Drag the title bar to move the widget and resize it to suit your layout. If its title bar is hidden, move the pointer to the top edge above the widget. For a video overlay, Microsoft says to use the video’s full-screen control and then pin the widget. Controls and behavior are documented in the Game Assist FAQ.
Game-specific tips are not the same as game support
The browser itself can be used with any PC game: you can enter a site or search manually even if Microsoft has not enhanced that title. Game-aware suggestions—such as tailored guides on a new tab—are limited to games in Microsoft’s changing enhanced-game catalog. Examples include Apex Legends, Baldur’s Gate 3, Cyberpunk 2077, Fortnite, Minecraft, Stardew Valley, and World of Warcraft. This is not a complete or permanent list; check Microsoft’s current enhanced-game catalog. Microsoft says enhanced-game content is currently English-only.

To search for something specific to the game you are playing, focus a search or text field and press Ctrl+G to insert the game title. You can also right-click and choose Paste game title. If a catalog-listed game does not show tailored tips, Microsoft recommends sending feedback from the widget’s … menu and including the game title and the storefront where you installed it.
What it does not replace
Edge for Game Bar is a compact overlay, not a replacement for the full desktop Edge interface. Its tabs are separate from desktop tabs, even though some browsing data is shared. Game Assist is built on Edge, so it is not a way to use Chrome or Firefox as the widget’s underlying browser. You do not have to make Edge the default browser to open it, but users of another browser may get less benefit from Edge profile integration.

Microsoft says many extensions can be used, including some that run automatically on webpages, such as ad blockers. Install and manage extensions through desktop Edge; not every extension or extension feature is guaranteed to work in the compact widget. The experience is primarily optimized for keyboard and mouse, and Microsoft says controller support is still being refined. It uses system resources while active; Microsoft says it has optimized the feature to reduce performance impact compared with switching to a desktop browser, but that is Microsoft’s characterization, not an independent performance measurement.

The widget is missing
Confirm that the PC is on Windows 11 version 22H2 or later, Edge is version 137 or later, and Windows and Game Bar are updated. Restart Edge after updating, then open a game and press Win+G. Look for either Edge for Game Bar or the older Game Assist label. Microsoft specifically recommends installing the latest monthly Windows updates and checking Game Bar updates in the Microsoft Store if the widget says Windows needs an update.

The browser stays over the game
It is likely pinned. Press Win+G, open the widget, and select Unpin. If the title bar is not visible, move the pointer to the area just above the widget to reveal it.
Desktop tabs are not showing in the widget
This is expected: Game Assist and desktop Edge do not automatically share open tabs. Use the widget’s address bar or browser controls to open the site you need.
You want to remove or reinstall it
Microsoft says the widget can be removed through Windows Settings > Apps. To reinstall it later, use Edge’s … menu and search for Game Assist.
Who is likely to find it useful?
It is most useful for players on a single monitor who regularly check guides, maps, Discord, streams, or music and want to avoid switching out of a game. It is less compelling if you rarely browse while playing, already keep a second monitor open, or prefer another browser and do not use Edge profiles. For guide discovery, remember that the overlay works broadly while tailored game-aware suggestions depend on the supported catalog.
