What began as an Easter Egg became a permanent offline game with three modes, controller support, personal high scores and several accessibility options.
You can play it now by opening Microsoft Edge and entering edge://surf in the address bar. Microsoft’s current feature page still lists the game, although availability and functionality can vary by device, market and browser version.

What is Microsoft Edge Surf?
Surf is a surfing-themed game built into the Chromium-based Microsoft Edge browser. It is designed for quick play without a separate download or account, and it can work offline once a compatible Edge installation is available.

Microsoft originally introduced Surf as an Edge Easter Egg in November 2019. An expanded version reached Edge Insiders in late February 2020 before arriving in the Stable channel on May 26, 2020. Microsoft described that release as a major expansion of the original experience in its Edge Stable announcement.
What the major update added
Endless mode: survival without a finish line
Endless is the straightforward survival mode. Keep moving, collect useful items and avoid islands, other obstacles and the Kraken for as long as possible. It is the best choice for a quick casual session or for chasing a personal distance or score record.
Time Trial: learn the route and improve your time
Time Trial puts you on a fixed course and asks you to complete it as quickly as possible. Coins can reduce your time, so success is not only about avoiding hazards; it is also about finding an efficient route.

You can learn where obstacles appear, refine your turns and gradually optimize a run. It is the most suitable mode for players who prefer improving a result rather than surviving indefinitely.

Zig Zag: maintain the streak
Zig Zag is built around passing through successive gates. Missing a gate resets the streak, while the run continues until you exhaust your lives. The mode demands more deliberate positioning than Endless and gives each successful gate a clear short-term objective.
Input and controller support
The update expanded Surf beyond basic keyboard play. Microsoft documented support for:
- Keyboard
- Mouse
- Touchscreens
- Xbox controllers
- PlayStation controllers
- Nintendo Switch Pro controllers
- Xbox Adaptive Controller
Microsoft also mentioned gamepad haptic feedback in the original announcement. The exact controls and controller behavior can vary with the operating system, connection method and browser version, so check the controls shown in Surf’s settings rather than assuming every device behaves identically.
Personal high scores
Surf tracks a separate personal high score for each mode and notifies you when you set a new record. Scores can be reset from the settings menu.

These are personal records, not evidence of a globally synchronized leaderboard. Score persistence may also differ between browser profiles, devices and versions, so the game should not be treated as a universal competitive ranking system.
Accessibility features
Accessibility was one of the most meaningful parts of the 2020 update. Microsoft specifically announced:
- High-visibility mode: highlights hit boxes around objects, making hazards easier to identify.
- Reduced-speed mode: slows the game down for players who need more reaction time or prefer a gentler pace.
- High-contrast support: improves visibility for players who benefit from stronger visual separation.
- Screen-reader support: adds compatibility for players using screen-reading technology.
- Xbox Adaptive Controller support: provides an additional input option for compatible setups.
These features were documented in Microsoft’s 2020 release announcement. Their exact behavior can depend on the current browser build and device, so accessibility support should be understood as platform-qualified rather than guaranteed to work identically everywhere.

Gameplay improvements and hidden surprises
Microsoft said the update included smarter enemy logic, gameplay improvements, bug fixes and broader user-experience polish. It also teased undisclosed secrets.

Microsoft’s current Surf page references hidden features and cheat-code-style discoveries, but it does not provide a complete authoritative list of every secret. Treat individual codes or Easter Eggs found elsewhere as version-dependent discoveries rather than guaranteed features of every installation.
How to play Surf today
Desktop instructions
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Click the address bar.
- Type
edge://surf. - Press Enter.
- Choose a mode and review the controls or settings before starting.
The direct address is more reliable than waiting for Edge to display an offline page. Microsoft confirms the launch path on its current Surf feature page.
Playing when offline
Edge can offer a link to Surf on its offline or error page when it detects that there is no internet connection. You do not need to depend on that page, however: entering edge://surf manually is the simplest way to launch the game when the feature is available.
Playing on mobile
Microsoft lists Surf as available in Edge mobile. Controls and feature parity may vary by phone, operating system and app version, so do not assume that every desktop mode, controller function, score behavior or secret is identical on mobile.

If edge://surf does not work
- Make sure you are using Microsoft Edge, not Chrome, Firefox or another Chromium-based browser.
- Type
edge://surfdirectly into the address bar instead of searching for it. - Update Edge through Settings and more (…) > Help and feedback > About Microsoft Edge.
- Restart Edge after the update and try again.
- Test a normal browser profile if the device is organization-managed or subject to restrictive policies.
- On mobile, update the Edge app and try again.
If Surf remains unavailable, the most accurate explanation is that the feature may not be supported on that particular device, market or browser version. Microsoft explicitly warns that availability and functionality can vary.
Is the update really “massive”?
Relative to the original Easter Egg, yes: Surf gained three distinct modes, multiple input methods, personal records, accessibility settings and substantial gameplay polish. That is a large expansion for a browser mini-game.
But “massive” should not be read as a current major game expansion or a newly released 2026 patch. The documented milestone happened in 2020, and Microsoft’s current page presents the resulting feature set as part of the existing Edge game.

Who should play Edge Surf?
- For a quick offline distraction: choose Endless.
- For route optimization: choose Time Trial.
- For short, focused challenges: choose Zig Zag.
- For easier visual parsing: try High Visibility.
- For more reaction time: enable Reduced Speed.
- For controller play: connect a supported controller and verify its bindings in settings.
Surf is still a small browser game rather than a full commercial surfing title. Its appeal is convenience: it is built into Edge, works as an offline time-killer and offers considerably more replay value than a one-screen Easter Egg.
