Microsoft Edge has a built-in surfing game. To launch it, open Edge, type edge://surf into the address bar, and press Enter. Edge Surf works offline on supported desktop installations and includes Endless, Time Trial, and Zig Zag modes.
What is Microsoft Edge Surf?
Edge Surf is Microsoft’s built-in browser game. It is included with Edge rather than delivered as an extension or a separate website, so you do not need to download a game or search the web for an imitation.

The feature launched in the stable Chromium-based version of Edge on May 26, 2020, beginning with Edge build 83.0.478.37. Microsoft describes it as an offline experience inspired in part by the classic Windows game SkiFree, although Edge Surf is its own surfing-themed game. Microsoft’s original announcement introduced the game and its release details.

How to open Edge Surf
- Open the Microsoft Edge browser.
- Click the address bar.
- Enter
edge://surf. - Press Enter.
- Choose a mode or start from the game’s opening screen.
edge://surfEnter the address directly into Edge’s address bar—not into a search box on a webpage. The fastest and safest route is the internal address above, rather than searching for “Edge Surf,” where third-party copies may appear.
How to play
Depending on the mode, you steer your surfer around islands, obstacles, and other hazards while trying to stay alive or complete the course. The Kraken is the game’s signature pursuer and one of the main threats to watch for.
Runs can include useful items such as hearts and boosts. In Endless mode, rescuing a friend can temporarily protect you from pursuers. Each mode keeps its own personal high score; Microsoft does not document a global online leaderboard as part of the feature.
Open the settings icon in the upper-right corner of the game to view the current instructions for your input method. This is the authoritative place to check controls because labels and mappings can vary by device or browser build.

The three Edge Surf modes
Endless
Endless mode challenges you to ride as far as possible while avoiding hazards and the Kraken. It is the best choice for a quick score-chasing session because there is no fixed course finish line. Collecting useful items and staying clear of obstacles are more important than completing a route.
Time Trial
Time Trial uses a fixed course that you must finish as quickly as possible. Coins can reduce your recorded time, and the course remains the same, allowing you to learn its layout and improve your route on later attempts.
Zig Zag
Zig Zag requires you to pass through gates in sequence. Missing a gate resets your streak, but the run continues until you lose all available lives. It suits players who prefer a precise timing challenge rather than a purely distance-based score.
Controls: keyboard, mouse, touch, and controllers
Microsoft lists support for keyboard, mouse, touch input, Xbox controllers, PlayStation controllers, Nintendo Switch Pro controllers, and the Xbox Adaptive Controller. Select the settings or instructions screen inside the game for the current device-specific layout.

A commonly reported keyboard layout uses the left and right arrow keys to steer, the Up Arrow or Spacebar to jump, and the Down Arrow to duck or dive. Those keys should be treated as a commonly reported arrangement rather than an immutable specification; confirm them in the game before relying on them.
On a controller or touchscreen, the interface may differ from the desktop keyboard experience. This is particularly important on mobile, where Microsoft does not promise identical controls across every platform and version.
Accessibility and difficulty settings
Edge Surf includes options that can make the game easier to follow or less demanding:
- High visibility mode: highlights hit boxes around objects so obstacles are easier to identify.
- Reduced speed mode: slows the game and gives players more reaction time.
- High-contrast and accessibility support: included among the improvements Microsoft announced for the stable release.
- Reset statistics: lets you clear the personal high scores recorded by the game.
To find these options, open the settings icon in the upper-right corner. Reduced speed can help if the game feels too fast, while high visibility is useful when obstacles blend into the scenery. Does Edge Surf work offline?
Yes, Microsoft describes Edge Surf as an offline game. On a supported desktop installation, you can normally open it with edge://surf even when Edge cannot connect to the internet. It is part of the Edge installation, not a separate download that must be fetched after you lose connectivity.
Offline access can still be blocked on a managed computer. Microsoft’s AllowSurfGame policy documentation says that disabling the policy prevents both direct navigation to edge://surf and offline play.
Does it work on phones?
Microsoft’s consumer feature page advertises Edge Surf for mobile devices. However, the experience may vary by platform, Edge version, market, and current implementation. The enterprise policy documentation lists Windows and macOS support from Edge 83 onward, while its policy matrix lists iOS from Edge 146 onward and Android as unsupported for that specific policy.

On a phone, try entering edge://surf in the Edge app and update Edge if it does not load. Do not assume that desktop controls, menus, modes, or offline behavior will be identical on Android and iOS.

Optional secrets and Easter eggs
Microsoft confirms that Surf contains secrets, including a rescue mechanic, a main-menu cheat code that can provide unlimited hearts and boosts, and an iconic playable character. The official feature page does not publish every secret or guarantee that all reported discoveries work across current builds.
One third-party guide reports that the following sequence unlocks a hidden NinjaCat character:
Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, AThis sequence is not confirmed in Microsoft’s current public documentation. If you try it, enter it on the main menu rather than during an active run, and treat it as a version-dependent Easter egg rather than a guaranteed feature.
What to do if edge://surf does not work
- Confirm the browser. The address works in Microsoft Edge, not in every Chromium-based browser.
- Use the address bar directly. Do not paste it into a search field.
- Update Edge. An outdated or incomplete installation may not load the game correctly.
- Restart Edge. Close and reopen the browser, then try the address again.
- Test while online. If it works online but not offline, the issue may involve the installation, platform, version, or an organization policy.
- Check whether the device is managed. On a school or work computer, ask the administrator whether the
AllowSurfGamepolicy has been disabled. - On mobile, update and retry. Mobile availability and behavior can differ from desktop.
Microsoft says the AllowSurfGame policy requires a browser restart and is not dynamically refreshed. If an administrator changes that setting, Edge may need to be restarted before the change takes effect.
Is Edge Surf worth using?
Edge Surf is a good fit if you want a free, immediate arcade game that requires no separate download and can work offline. Its three modes offer more variety than a basic endless runner, while controller support and reduced-speed and high-visibility options make it more flexible than many browser mini-games.
Its limitations are equally straightforward: it is a small single-player browser game, not a full surfing simulator. Platform support can vary, managed devices may block it, and reported Easter eggs may not work consistently. Compared with Chrome’s offline Dinosaur game, Edge Surf offers more modes and input options, but both are best understood as short, built-in browser diversions.
Bottom line
Microsoft Edge Surf is real, built into Edge, and still accessible through edge://surf. Open that address in Edge to play Endless, Time Trial, or Zig Zag, check the in-game settings for current controls and accessibility options, and remember that mobile availability and managed-device access may vary.
