Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 had real problems at launch, but the initial outage is not the same as the loading and crashing issues addressed in later updates. Microsoft said an overloaded data-request service caused long loads, errors, and missing aircraft on Nov. 20, 2024, then reported that the early server-connectivity problems had been resolved. Later patch notes document separate, version-specific fixes and troubleshooting advice.
Why did Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 have problems at launch?
In a launch-day update on Nov. 20, 2024, Microsoft attributed long loading times, errors, and missing aircraft to an overloaded server handling data requests for new in-game systems, including Career mode and missions. Microsoft said the issue had been solved and players were being admitted at a steady pace. That is Microsoft’s account of the cause and status at the time, not an independent root-cause investigation. Microsoft’s launch-day update described the incident this way: “The server responsible for handling data requests got overloaded, causing delays and errors.”
On Nov. 28, 2024, the Microsoft Flight Simulator Team said it had resolved the server-connectivity issues many players experienced during the first days. It also reported greater than 99.999% reliability for the simulator’s servers and related online services. That figure is Microsoft’s dated 2024 report, not a measurement of present-day uptime. What later updates say about loading and crashes
Subsequent release notes describe particular software problems and fixes, not a continuation of the launch-day server overload. The notes apply to specific builds and do not establish that every player encountered the listed issues or that they remain in a later build.

| Update | What Microsoft documented |
|---|---|
| Sim Update 1, Mar. 6, 2025 | Included crash and package-loading fixes. Microsoft warned that outdated PC Community-folder packages could affect performance or behavior, and advised players with stability or long-loading problems to move those packages elsewhere before relaunching. Sim Update 1 notes |
| Sim Update 2, May 15, 2025 | Repeated the Community-folder advice and listed instability when selecting 3x or 4x DLSS Frame Generation as a known issue for that release. This is historical guidance for that build, not confirmation of the status in a later version. Sim Update 2 notes |
| Sim Update 6, version 1.8.14.0, Aug. 13, 2026 | Listed fixes including a rare crash with ray-traced shadows enabled, infinite loading for some aircraft, and slow initial boot. The notes also advised PC users with stability or loading problems to move Community packages before relaunching. Sim Update 6 notes |
Sim Update 6 also reverted to FSR 3 because FSR 4 frame generation was incompatible with rendering to multiple windows. Microsoft said it was working with AMD on a future fix; that describes the Aug. 13, 2026 release notes and should not be assumed to describe a later build. Sim Update 6 notes
How to troubleshoot long loading or crashes
If the simulator is still loading slowly or behaving unstably, use Microsoft’s support steps for your platform. These are troubleshooting options, not guaranteed fixes; begin with reversible checks before considering steps that affect saved data. Microsoft Support’s loading-issues guide

On PC, isolate Community-folder add-ons
- Close the simulator.
- Move the contents of the Community folder to another location, or rename the folder, so the simulator cannot load those packages.
- Relaunch and check whether loading or stability improves. If it does, restore packages selectively and check compatibility; outdated or incompatible add-ons may be involved.
Microsoft’s support guide also documents deleting the StreamedPackages cache on PC as a troubleshooting step. Follow the guide for the applicable instructions rather than deleting unrelated files.
On Xbox, clear reserved space if needed
Microsoft Support documents clearing the game’s reserved space on Xbox as an option for loading problems. Consult the support guide’s Xbox instructions before proceeding, because clearing stored game data can have consequences. The guide lists cloud-save deletion only as a later option if earlier steps fail; understand the saved-data implications before using it.

Check whether the symptom matches the build
Compare the issue with the release notes for the version installed. A fix or known issue recorded for Sim Update 1, 2, or 6 does not automatically apply to every version. Microsoft’s notes can help distinguish an add-on or local loading problem from a graphics-specific issue, but they do not establish a player-wide failure rate.

No. A flight stick is an optional control accessory: it can change how you operate the aircraft, but it cannot resolve server availability, loading, or software crashes.
