The totals were higher than the Sunday estimates reported on April 6. The Associated Press and Variety initially reported studio estimates of $157 million in North America and $301 million worldwide. Those were early estimates, not the later record figures. The Associated Press report and Variety’s opening-weekend report give that Sunday snapshot.
How did it compare with The Super Mario Bros. Movie?
The Super Mario Bros. Movie had set the previous video-game-adaptation opening benchmark at about $146 million domestically, according to contemporaneous AP and Variety coverage. On the comparable domestic opening measure, A Minecraft Movie moved the record higher.

The opening-weekend result does not mean Minecraft surpassed Mario in lifetime worldwide box office. Guinness reported The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s worldwide lifetime gross as $1,359,146,628 as of February 19, 2025. By comparison, Guinness, citing The Numbers, listed A Minecraft Movie’s worldwide gross at $961,187,780 as of February 25, 2026. These are dated lifetime totals, distinct from the opening-weekend record. Guinness’ opening record page reports the Mario comparison; its live-action adaptation record page gives the dated Minecraft total.
What kind of record is it?
The claim is specifically about the highest-grossing opening weekend for a movie based on a video game. It is not a claim about all films, all opening periods, or the highest lifetime gross among video-game adaptations. The cited record uses the three-day opening-weekend figures; keep that period separate from preview-inclusive or extended opening figures.

It is also important to distinguish geography: the $162.75 million figure is domestic (the U.S. and Canada), while $313.7 million is worldwide. For context, the AP and Variety Sunday estimates used the North American and worldwide measures respectively, but their estimates were subsequently exceeded by the figures Guinness lists.
What is A Minecraft Movie?
Warner Bros. describes the film as the first live-action big-screen adaptation of Minecraft. Directed by Jared Hess and starring Jason Momoa and Jack Black, it follows four characters who enter the Overworld. The North American theatrical release was April 4, 2025, with international rollout beginning April 2; Warner Bros. distributes worldwide, while Legendary East distributes in China. Why did the opening attract attention?
Warner Bros. executives credited audience response and the film’s appeal to fans. Pamela Abdy, then co-chair and CEO of Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, told the AP, “We’re just thrilled that audiences are responding and that everyone’s going to the theater.” Co-chair and CEO Michael DeLuca said, “We made the movie for the fans and the fans exceeded our expectations.” These are the studio leaders’ explanations, not independent proof of what caused the result.
Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian described the adaptation as “the perfect small screen to big screen alliance” and said it had become “a must-see theatrical event.” His assessment reflects an industry analyst’s view of the film’s theatrical appeal, rather than a measured causal finding. The AP’s April 6, 2025 report includes the comments and the initial estimates.
