The project involved Microsoft’s Open Source Programs Office, Team Xbox, Activision, and digital archivist Jason Scott.
This is a significant preservation and licensing milestone—but it is not the same as placing the entire Zork franchise in the public domain. The source code is permissively licensed; trademarks, branding, packaging, marketing materials, and other non-code assets remain separate.

The short version
- What changed: The historical source repositories for Zork I, Zork II, and Zork III now have an explicit MIT-licensed rights grant.
- What did not change: The release does not automatically license Zork trademarks, logos, commercial packaging, marketing materials, manuals, artwork, or every other franchise asset.
- What you can do: Study, copy, modify, compile, and redistribute the MIT-licensed code, subject to the license terms and any separate rights affecting particular files or non-code material.
- What you cannot assume: That every official commercial edition is now free to redistribute, or that a modern build will reproduce the original releases exactly.
Where to find the source
Microsoft used existing historical repositories rather than creating entirely new repositories for the announcement:
Microsoft says the licensing changes were contributed through upstream pull requests. The repositories had already been publicly visible for years, including a 2019 GitHub upload. The important change was not simply that somebody uploaded Zork source code; it was that the relevant rights holders documented an explicit license for reuse.

Why the MIT License matters
The MIT License is a permissive open-source license. In practical terms, it generally allows you to:
- Read and study the source.
- Copy and modify it.
- Compile modified versions.
- Use the code in commercial or noncommercial projects.
- Redistribute original or modified versions.
- Combine it with other software, subject to the applicable license conditions.
The main practical obligations are to preserve the copyright and permission notices and to include the license when redistributing covered code. The software is provided without warranty. The MIT grant is permission to use the covered code; it is not a promise that the historical source builds cleanly, reproduces a commercial release, or includes every asset needed for a finished game.
For a legal reading of a particular product or derivative project, developers should review the repository’s license files and the rights attached to any additional material. The announcement establishes a useful general permission for the source code, not a universal answer to every possible Zork-related use.
Open-source code is not the whole Zork franchise
Microsoft explicitly excludes commercial packaging, marketing materials, trademarks, and brands from the announcement. That distinction matters if you want to publish a new game, port, fan project, educational product, or commercial release.

A developer can potentially build on the released code while still needing to handle these categories separately:
- Names and logos: The MIT License does not automatically grant permission to use Zork branding or imply endorsement by Microsoft, Activision, Infocom, or the original creators.
- Artwork and packaging: Box art, manuals, feelies, promotional images, and other commercial materials are not covered merely because source code is licensed under MIT.
- Official game editions: A paid commercial edition or compilation may contain binaries, documentation, branding, and other material outside the source-code grant.
- Repository contents: Historical source collections can include discarded files, auxiliary material, or files with different provenance. Check the applicable notices instead of assuming every file has identical status.
The safest description is that the released source is a permissive foundation for preservation, study, ports, experiments, and new software. It is not permission to make any project Zork-branded without reviewing trademark and other rights.
What Zork’s source actually contains
Zork I, Zork II, and Zork III are text-based interactive-fiction games derived from a larger original Zork project. They were designed around the Z-Machine, a virtual-machine specification that allowed Infocom story files to run on different computers.
The repositories contain source written in ZIL, or Zork Implementation Language. The Zork I repository describes ZIL as a refactoring of MDL, a language related to Lisp. This is not a modern C++, C#, or JavaScript codebase. It reflects the tools, constraints, and development practices of early commercial interactive fiction.

That makes the repositories valuable even when someone is not trying to play the games. They provide source-level evidence of parser logic, object and world modeling, scripted events, text handling, and the techniques used to fit an ambitious adventure into historically limited systems.
How to compile and run the source
Microsoft’s announcement gives a basic Windows-oriented workflow using the community ZILF toolchain:
"%ZILF_PATH%zilf.exe" zork1.zil
"%ZILF_PATH%zapf.exe" zork1.zap zork1-ignite.z3
The generated .z3 story file can then be opened in a compatible Z-Machine interpreter. Microsoft identifies Windows Frotz as one option.
The commands should be treated as a starting point rather than a guaranteed universal build recipe:

- They use Windows path syntax and the
%ZILF_PATH%environment variable. - Filenames and build steps may differ between the Zork I, II, and III repositories.
- You need both the relevant ZILF tools and a compatible interpreter.
- ZILF is a modern community tool, not Infocom’s original official compiler.
- Minor compatibility problems or compilation errors are possible.
- A successfully generated story file is not necessarily identical to an original commercial binary.
Useful tools include:
- ZILF, for compiling ZIL projects.
- ZLR, another tool in the ZILF ecosystem.
- Windows Frotz, for running Z-code story files on Windows.
Common problems
- ZILF is not found: Confirm that the tools are installed and that
ZILF_PATHpoints to the directory containingzilf.exeandzapf.exe. An absolute path can also be used. - A filename does not exist: Check the repository README and its actual directory contents. Microsoft’s sample command is not guaranteed to apply unchanged to all three repositories.
- Compilation fails: Historical-language assumptions and differences between the original and modern toolchain can cause errors. Consult the repository documentation and community tool documentation.
- The output will not run: Confirm that the generated file is a valid Z-code story file and that the interpreter supports its story-file version, such as Z3.
- The result differs from the commercial game: A source snapshot, a compiler, a generated story file, and a packaged commercial release are separate things.
Why the source may not reproduce the original games exactly
The Zork I repository presents its contents as a snapshot of the Infocom development system. It includes material that was used and discarded, and it warns that the arrangement may not exactly match the source tree used to ship the commercial game.
The repository also states that there is no known way to compile the source with Infocom’s original official compiler. Existing archive files do not by themselves prove that the historical source can be rebuilt into the exact binaries shipped for every platform or release.
That means “canonical” should be understood carefully. These repositories are canonical and historically important sources for studying the preserved material. They are not necessarily byte-for-byte replicas of every production tree, nor proof that a modern rebuild is identical to every official edition. The same caution should be applied to Zork II and Zork III rather than assuming the three repositories have identical completeness or buildability.

Not in the broad sense implied by “the Zork games are free.” The MIT-licensed source can be downloaded, studied, and used under its license, but that does not automatically make every official branded release or compilation free to redistribute.

If you only want the simplest packaged way to play, Microsoft points readers to The Zork Anthology on GOG. Availability and pricing can vary by country and may change, so check the store listing for the current details.
If you want to learn how the games work, experiment with ZIL, or create preservation builds, the GitHub repositories and ZILF are the more relevant route. They offer source access, but not necessarily a polished installer, original packaging, modern support, or a complete recreation of the commercial release experience.
What developers can build
The MIT license makes several kinds of work more practical, including educational demonstrations, parser research, accessibility projects, new interpreters, preservation builds, ports, experimental versions, and potentially commercial software incorporating modified code.

- Keep the copyright and MIT permission notices.
- Document which files and components are covered by which licenses.
- Separate the source-code license from branding, artwork, manuals, and packaging rights.
- Avoid suggesting endorsement by Microsoft, Activision, Infocom, or the original authors.
- Preserve the repository history and record the exact commit used for a preservation build.
- Keep the original source alongside any ZILF-generated output.
- Describe a modern rebuild as a rebuild unless evidence establishes that it matches a historical release.
Why this matters for game preservation
Source-level access changes what can be preserved and studied. An opaque binary can show how a game behaves; source code can reveal how its parser, world model, data structures, and constraints were implemented.
For students, the repositories offer a rare look at the construction of historically important commercial software. For researchers, they preserve evidence of a development environment that might otherwise be inferred only from compiled files. For programmers, they provide material for interpreters, ports, accessibility tools, and experiments with interactive-fiction design.
The licensing decision also reduces a long-standing practical uncertainty. Publicly visible code is not automatically code that others may legally copy, modify, or redistribute. By documenting an MIT grant, the rights holders make responsible educational, preservation, and development work easier to undertake while leaving commercial branding and packaging rights separate.
Bottom line
Microsoft’s announcement is best understood as a formal open-source licensing and preservation milestone. The source for Zork I, Zork II, and Zork III is now available under the MIT License, giving developers and researchers much clearer permission to study, modify, compile, and reuse the covered code. But the announcement does not make the entire Zork franchise public domain, does not automatically license its trademarks or commercial assets, and does not guarantee an exact rebuild of the original releases.
