Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYour microphone can work in Windows, Discord, or a console party and still fail in game chat. Voice communication passes through separate hardware, operating-system, game, account, and network layers. The fastest fix is to test the microphone outside the affected game, identify which layer fails, and then change only the settings relevant to that result.
Start with the symptom
| What you observe | Likely area | First test |
|---|---|---|
| You hear others, but nobody hears you | Mute state, input device, push-to-talk, permission, or account restriction | Test the microphone in Windows, a console party, or Discord |
| You cannot hear others, but they hear you | Output device, chat volume, party priority, or game-chat mute | Check chat output and game-versus-chat balance |
| Neither direction works | Headset connection, wrong devices, chat mode, account, network, or outage | Reconnect the headset and test another voice channel |
| The mic works in Discord or a party but not one game | Game settings, channel selection, cross-platform communication, or a game bug | Check the game’s voice options before changing drivers |
| The game does not list the microphone | Device detection, permissions, compatibility, or exclusive access | Confirm that the operating system or console detects it |
| The indicator moves, but speech is inaudible | Input threshold, mute, voice channel, moderation, or voice-service failure | Lower the threshold and test another player or channel |
| It works in a lobby but not during a match | Team, proximity, match, or server-specific voice settings | Check the active channel and whether the game changes modes |
| Only cross-platform players cannot hear you | Cross-network privacy settings or game-service compatibility | Test with a player on the same platform |
The 60-second isolation test
- Check the headset’s mute button and flip-to-mute boom.
- Reconnect the headset, wireless receiver, or controller.
- If it is USB, connect it directly to the computer or console instead of through a hub. Sony specifically recommends a direct USB connection for some headset voice-chat failures (Sony support).
- If it is wireless, check its battery, dongle, pairing, and whether another device has claimed the microphone.
- Test the microphone in the operating system, a console party, Discord, or another game.
- Select the intended input device before launching the affected game, then restart the game.
If the microphone fails in every test, concentrate on the headset, connection, permissions, device selection, and drivers. If it works everywhere except one title, do not begin by replacing hardware or reinstalling the game; inspect that game’s voice configuration and account restrictions.

Check the headset and connection
- Make sure the physical mute switch is off and the boom is fully lowered if it uses flip-to-mute.
- Push a 3.5-mm plug fully into the controller, computer, or headset. A TRRS headset may need a compatible PC splitter, while some splitters are incompatible with controller jacks.
- Try another USB port and bypass hubs. A wireless dongle can be powered while still failing to provide microphone input.
- Confirm that a wireless headset is connected to its gaming dongle, not merely paired over Bluetooth.
- Disconnect the headset from a phone, tablet, or second computer while testing. Some multi-device headsets route microphone input to the Bluetooth device.
- Charge the headset and update its firmware only if the manufacturer provides a relevant update.
- Close audio-routing, noise-suppression, or manufacturer software temporarily if it may have selected another input.
Bluetooth can expose a separate communications profile from its normal high-quality audio profile. It may therefore play game sound while producing poor, missing, or incorrectly routed microphone input. Sony also documents cases where simultaneous Bluetooth and 2.4-GHz connections cause the Bluetooth-connected device to take microphone priority (Sony support).

- Microphone access
- Let apps access your microphone
- Let desktop apps access your microphone
Desktop games may not appear as individual entries, so the desktop-app setting matters. In Windows 10, use Start > Settings > Privacy > Microphone and enable access for apps and desktop applications. Microsoft notes that an update can require these permissions to be restored (Microsoft’s microphone troubleshooting guide).
Select and test the input
- Open Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- Under Input, select the headset or microphone you intend to use.
- Open its properties and choose Start test.
- Speak normally, select Stop test, and play the recording.
- Raise Input volume if the recording is too quiet.
A silent Windows test means the game is not yet the main suspect. Check the mute state, connection, permissions, and selected device first.
Inspect the mixer and troubleshooter
Check Windows’ sound and volume-mixer controls for a separate game input or output level, an unwanted webcam microphone, and routing to another headset. Audio utilities can also change noise suppression, exclusive-mode, or default-device behavior.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For persistent detection or sound problems, use the input and output troubleshooting controls under Settings > System > Sound. If Windows does not detect the microphone at all, open Device Manager by right-clicking Start, expand Sound, video and game controllers, and then consider uninstalling the relevant device or driver, restarting Windows, scanning for hardware changes, or updating the driver. Driver reinstallation is a later step for a detection problem—not a likely fix for a muted game channel or push-to-talk setting.
Check the game’s voice settings
Menu names vary by game and can change after updates. Look for:
- Voice chat enabled
- Input and output device selection
- Open microphone versus push-to-talk
- Push-to-talk key binding and conflicts
- Voice-activation threshold or input sensitivity
- Party, team, squad, or proximity channel
- Voice-chat volume
- Mute-all, mute-team, or individual-player controls
- Cross-platform voice communication
- Voice-chat privacy consent or recording settings
Some games do not expose a microphone selector and simply inherit the operating-system default. If the game indicator reacts but teammates hear silence, lower the activation threshold, confirm the correct channel, check for a voice ban or mute, and determine whether the indicator belongs to the game or only to Windows.

- Use One Headset For Most Game Platforms. Your headphones work with your PC or Mac via USB DAC or 3.5 mm cable, mobile devices with 3.5 mm cable or with gaming consoles including PlayStationⓇ 5 and PlayStationⓇ 4 (USB wireless stereo sound only), Nintendo Switch (wireless stereo sound when docked)

Push-to-talk is a common false failure. Verify the assigned key, hold it while speaking, and check whether another action or overlay has taken that key. Open microphone is simpler for controller play but can transmit background noise. Push-to-talk improves privacy but fails if the key is unbound or forgotten. A threshold that is too high clips or ignores speech; one that is too low transmits fans and keyboards.

Discord and overlay conflicts
Discord is useful as a comparison test, but it has its own settings and permissions. Open User Settings > Voice & Video, choose the intended Input Device, and confirm that Input Mode is not accidentally set to Push to Talk. Under the microphone test, select Let’s Check.
Also check local mute, server mute, channel permissions, and whether Discord is using a different device from the game. Restart Discord completely rather than only closing its window. If necessary, use User Settings > Voice & Video > Debugging > Reset Voice and Video Settings. Discord documents these checks in its voice and video troubleshooting guide.
If Discord works but the game does not, the basic microphone path is probably functional, but the game may still select a different default device. If Discord also fails, continue with Windows permissions, device selection, connection, and hardware. Discord’s Standard or Legacy audio subsystem can be an advanced fallback for certain Discord-specific problems; it is not a universal game-chat fix (Discord’s additional troubleshooting guide).
PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4
PS5
- Open Settings > Sound > Microphone.
- Choose the correct Input Device.
- Adjust Microphone Level while speaking.
- Check the DualSense mute button and headset mute control.
- Press the PS button and inspect the active voice-chat card.
- Switch between party chat and game chat.
- Check the game/chat balance and ensure game voice chat has not been muted.
PS5 can route you into PlayStation party chat when you expect game chat. It also has controls that can mute game voice chat without making the microphone itself defective. See PlayStation’s party voice-chat guide and voice-chat troubleshooting guidance.
Discord voice chat is separate from PlayStation party chat. On PS5, you cannot be in a Discord voice chat and a PlayStation party voice chat simultaneously, and Discord must be linked to the PlayStation account (PlayStation’s Discord voice-chat guide).

PS4
Check the headset input, microphone level, mute controls, party-versus-game chat, and game/chat balance using PlayStation’s voice-chat guidance. Audio routing differs from PS5: PlayStation notes that PS4 specifications do not always allow voice chat and game audio to be output simultaneously to both the headset and TV.
Xbox
Xbox menu labels and privacy controls can vary by console generation, account type, game, and software version. Without relying on a potentially outdated menu path, check the following:
- The headset’s physical mute control.
- Whether the controller or console recognizes the headset.
- Whether you are in Xbox party chat instead of the game’s channel.
- Account privacy, family, and cross-network communication restrictions.
- Another headset or controller, if available.
- Whether the problem affects every game or only one.
- The Xbox service status if multiple players report the same failure.
A successful Xbox party test proves that one platform-chat path works; it does not prove that a particular game’s voice channel, cross-platform setting, or account permission is correct.

Privacy, parental controls, and account restrictions
A working microphone can still be blocked by a child or family-account restriction, platform privacy setting, individual mute or block, game-specific parental control, cross-platform communication restriction, server permission, moderation penalty, or temporary voice-chat suspension.
Review the account’s communication and multiplayer permissions rather than disabling every privacy feature. PlayStation users can consult the PlayStation privacy-settings guide. Discord users should check server and channel permissions as well as their local microphone selection; a server can prevent speaking even when the device works.
When the network or game service is the problem
Investigate network causes only after the microphone passes a local test. Relevant clues include voice chat failing for many players, a lobby working while matches fail, cross-platform users being affected selectively, or voice chat failing while local recording and party chat work.

Possible causes include NAT restrictions, blocked voice connections, VPN or firewall interference, a game voice-server failure, platform outage, or cross-platform service incompatibility. Check the relevant platform and game status pages when available. Do not forward ports or disable security software as a first-line fix; those steps require game- and platform-specific documentation. If only one person cannot hear you, check mute, block, channel, and account issues before assuming a general outage.

The microphone fails in every app
Check physical mute, cable or dongle, operating-system detection, input selection, permission, input level, another port or controller, and then drivers. If a second known-good headset works immediately, the original headset or its connection is the likely failing component.
It works in Windows or a console party but not one game
Check the game’s input device, voice mode, push-to-talk binding, threshold, channel, voice toggle, cross-platform option, account restriction, and known issues. Contact the game developer when those settings are correct and another title works.
You hear others but cannot speak
Prioritize mute state, input selection, push-to-talk, input level, server permission, account restriction, and game-specific bugs.
You can speak but hear nobody
Prioritize the output device, chat volume, game/chat balance, game-chat mute, party-chat priority, and individual-player mute. This is an output problem even if the headset contains the microphone.

Replace or repair the headset when it fails in Windows or console chat, fails with a second cable or port, and another headset works on the same system. USB wireless avoids some Bluetooth routing problems but depends on its dongle, port, firmware, and platform support. A standalone USB microphone can help PC players whose headphones work but whose headset boom is defective, though it adds another device-selection path and may not work with every console or game.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my mic work in Discord but not in-game?
Discord and the game can use different input devices, permissions, voice modes, thresholds, channels, and account permissions. Select the same microphone in both and check the game’s push-to-talk and voice-chat settings.
Why can I hear teammates but cannot talk?
The microphone is likely muted, set to the wrong input, too quiet, waiting for push-to-talk, blocked by a channel permission, or restricted by the account.
Why does my headset play audio while its microphone does not?
The headset may be using a different Bluetooth communications profile, have a disconnected or incompatible microphone path, or be routed to another device. Test a wired or alternate headset and inspect the selected input.
Should I reinstall the game?
Usually not first. Reinstalling rarely fixes a mute state, permission, push-to-talk binding, party-chat priority, or account restriction. Consider it only after local tests and game-specific troubleshooting fail.
Do I need to change NAT or port settings?
Only when the symptoms point to a network or voice-service problem, such as widespread failures or voice chat failing only in online matches. Prove that the local microphone works first.
