microsoft.management.infrastructure.native.unmanaged.dll is a genuine Microsoft Management Infrastructure runtime file, not a random filename. If Windows says it is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, repair the product that requested it instead of downloading a loose DLL.

Start with this diagnostic checklist

Before changing anything, record:

  • Which program fails: pwsh.exe, powershell.exe, or another application.
  • When it fails: at launch, when running Get-CimInstance, during inventory, or while connecting to a management service.
  • The executable path: right-click the shortcut, select Properties, and check Target.
  • The architecture: determine whether the application is x86, x64, or ARM64.
  • The installation location: note whether the file is expected in Windows or inside the application’s private runtime folder.

This file belongs to Microsoft Management Infrastructure, commonly called MI. MI is the native layer used by CIM and WMI management operations. The related managed API provides types such as CimSession and CimInstance through Microsoft.Management.Infrastructure.

PowerShell commands such as Get-CimInstance use this infrastructure to query Windows management classes. .NET management, inventory, monitoring, deployment, and administration applications can also include their own copy of the runtime.

What the error means

Common loader messages include:

  • “The program can’t start because Microsoft.Management.Infrastructure.Native.Unmanaged.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because Microsoft.Management.Infrastructure.Native.Unmanaged.dll was not found.”
  • “Error loading Microsoft.Management.Infrastructure.Native.Unmanaged.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “The program can’t start because Microsoft.Management.Infrastructure.Native.Unmanaged.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
  • A .NET DllNotFoundException, including “Unable to load DLL ‘Microsoft.Management.Infrastructure.Native.Unmanaged.DLL’ or one of its dependencies.”

“Specified module could not be found” does not always mean this exact file is absent. A dependent native DLL, incorrect architecture, blocked package, or inaccessible runtime folder can produce the same result.

Find the program that owns the failing copy

The correct repair depends on the executable making the load request.

If PowerShell 7 fails

Open an existing PowerShell window if possible and run:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
$PSHOME
Get-Command pwsh
$PSVersionTable

If PowerShell will not start, inspect the shortcut:

  1. Right-click the PowerShell shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Read the path in Target.
  4. Note whether it points to an MSI installation, a Microsoft Store package, or another application directory.

PowerShell 7 can be installed through MSI, MSIX or Microsoft Store, ZIP, or the .NET global tool. Its private runtime files may be under architecture-specific folders such as win-x64, win-x86, or win-arm64.

If another .NET application fails

Open the application’s installation folder and look for:

Microsoft.Management.Infrastructure.Runtime.Win

A deployed application may contain native assets under a path similar to:

runtimeswin-x64native

The exact folder varies by application. Do not assume that a copy in C:WindowsSystem32 can replace a private copy required by the application.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall PowerShell 7

This is the quickest solution when the failing executable is pwsh.exe.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Choose Installed apps.
  4. Search for PowerShell.
  5. If Advanced options is available, select it.
  6. Choose Repair first.
  7. Test PowerShell with:
Get-CimInstance Win32_OperatingSystem

If repair is unavailable or does not help, uninstall the affected PowerShell package and reinstall it from Microsoft’s PowerShell installation documentation. That page points to the current official MSI, MSIX, ZIP, and other supported installation methods.

You can also use WinGet:

winget search --id Microsoft.PowerShell --exact
winget install --id Microsoft.PowerShell --source winget

For the MSI package, use:

winget install --id Microsoft.PowerShell --source winget --installer-type wix

Restart Windows after reinstalling, then verify:

$PSVersionTable
Get-CimInstance Win32_OperatingSystem

If the command returns operating-system information, the native CIM runtime is loading again.

Microsoft Store and MSIX installation issue

A packaged PowerShell installation can fail when pwsh.exe is launched directly from a path under:

C:Program FilesWindowsApps

Launching the executable outside its package identity can cause E_ACCESSDENIED while loading the native CIM DLL. In that situation, the file may be intact.

Use one of these methods:

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Search for PowerShell.
  3. Launch it from the installed shortcut.

Alternatively, use the App Execution Alias:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Advanced app settings.
  4. Open App execution aliases.
  5. Enable the PowerShell alias if it is disabled.
  6. Start pwsh from a new terminal window.

If the MSIX build continues to fail, install the official MSI build instead. The documented package-identity behavior is different from a genuinely missing or corrupt DLL.

Fix 2: Repair Windows components

Use this path when the error names a Windows component, multiple management tools fail, or Windows itself shows other corruption symptoms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First install pending updates:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install all available updates.
  5. Restart the computer.

Then repair the component store and protected system files.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Wait for DISM to finish. Then run:

sfc /scannow

Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC because DISM supplies the repair source that SFC can use. Follow the official System File Checker and DISM instructions.

Restart Windows and test the application again. If SFC reports that it repaired files, retest the original command. If it reports that it could not repair everything, run the commands again after Windows Update completes and review the CBS log at:

%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log

If Windows Update cannot provide repair files, Microsoft documents using a matching installation source:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess

Replace the example source path with a valid matching Windows repair source. Do not use an arbitrary image from another Windows release.

Repeatedly hunting through Windows folders and rerunning SFC without knowing what changed is inefficient. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported system problems and show what it finds; repair actions are handled by the full version, and it is not required when DISM and SFC repair the system successfully.

Fix 3: Repair the application and its runtime

If only one .NET application fails, repair that application rather than replacing a system DLL.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Find the failing program.
  5. Open its menu and choose Advanced options, if available.
  6. Select Repair.
  7. Start the application and repeat the operation that previously failed.

If there is no repair option, use the application’s own installer or uninstall and reinstall it from the vendor’s official source. Back up application settings first if the program stores important profiles locally.

Microsoft.Management.Infrastructure.Runtime.Win

The official NuGet package page identifies the package and its Windows runtime assets. The application should be published for the correct runtime identifier, such as:

win-x64
win-x86
win-arm64

A framework-dependent application can fail when its runtimes directory was omitted during packaging. Restoring the package and republishing the application is the correct fix.

Fix 4: Correct an architecture mismatch

A 32-bit application needs its x86 native runtime. A 64-bit application needs x64 assets, and an ARM64 application needs ARM64 assets.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the application’s documentation or installer. For an executable:

  1. Open Task Manager.
  2. Start the application if it remains open.
  3. Select Details.
  4. Right-click the column headings.
  5. Select Select columns.
  6. Enable Platform, where available.

Do not copy an x64 DLL into an x86 application directory, or the reverse. A 64-bit Windows installation can run 32-bit programs, but it does not make private runtime copies interchangeable.

After reinstalling, confirm that the application contains the matching runtime folder and test the original operation again.

Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software can remove or isolate a native runtime file.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Look for an event involving the failing application or DLL.
  5. Check the recorded file path.
  6. Restore it only when the path belongs to a trusted Microsoft or application installation.
  7. Update security definitions.
  8. Repair or reinstall the owning product.

Do not restore a file merely because its name matches the error. Confirm its path, digital signature, and installation source. Reinstalling the owning product is safer than restoring an isolated file into an unrelated directory.

Fix 6: Update Windows and related drivers

A management application can also expose a broader installation or device-management problem. Install Windows updates first:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart.

To check a device driver:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant category.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart if Windows installs an update.

Do not expect a random driver update to replace this DLL. Driver work is relevant when the failing management tool is tied to device enumeration or a recently changed device.

Manually checking every device and guessing which driver is stale can take time. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify reported driver issues; driver installation is handled by the full version, and it is optional rather than a requirement for repairing PowerShell or the application runtime.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows Features: what to check

Do not enable random Windows features as a DLL repair. CIM and WMI support is normally part of Windows, while PowerShell 7 is installed separately.

If a legacy tool specifically requires Windows PowerShell or a management component:

  1. Press Win+R.
  2. Type:
optionalfeatures
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Review the available Windows features.
  3. Enable only the feature named in the application’s documentation.
  4. Select OK.
  5. Restart if Windows requests it.

Adding a feature will not repair a missing private PowerShell or .NET runtime copy. Identify the owner first.

Why regsvr32 is not the fix

Do not run:

regsvr32 Microsoft.Management.Infrastructure.Native.Unmanaged.dll

regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. This native runtime is not a normal COM self-registering component. A registration error does not repair missing dependencies, architecture mismatches, package identity, or a damaged installation. Microsoft explains the purpose and limitations of Regsvr32.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Avoid loose DLL downloads

Do not download microsoft.management.infrastructure.native.unmanaged.dll from a random DLL repository and copy it into System32 or the application folder. That approach can introduce malware, the wrong build, the wrong architecture, or an incomplete set of dependent files. It also leaves the original damaged installation unresolved.

Use the official PowerShell installation page, Windows Update, DISM and SFC, or the application vendor’s installer. Only an advanced Windows recovery procedure using a verified matching installation source should replace a protected system file manually.

If the error remains

Work through this final checklist:

  1. Record the exact executable and full path in the error.
  2. Confirm whether it is powershell.exe, pwsh.exe, or another program.
  3. Check $PSHOME and Get-Command pwsh.
  4. Inspect the application’s runtimes folders.
  5. Confirm x86, x64, or ARM64 compatibility.
  6. Check antivirus quarantine and Windows Event Viewer.
  7. Run DISM, then SFC.
  8. Use the application’s Repair, Verify files, or reinstall function.
  9. Test from a new Windows user profile if the issue appears profile-specific.
  10. Check PATH for an old PowerShell or application installation.

If a clean reinstall still fails, investigate a loader search-path problem, permissions issue, missing companion dependency, or packaging defect. Replacing the DLL repeatedly is unlikely to solve those causes.

FAQ

Is this DLL legitimate?

Yes. It is a Microsoft Management Infrastructure native runtime component. The exact copy may belong to Windows, PowerShell 7, or an application that bundles the Microsoft runtime.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is it a virus?

The filename alone cannot prove authenticity. Check the file’s path and digital signature, and scan it with Windows Security. A copy from an unknown download source should not be trusted.

Does PowerShell use this file?

PowerShell’s CIM and WMI operations use Microsoft Management Infrastructure. PowerShell 7 also carries private architecture-specific runtime files.

Should I copy the System32 version into PowerShell?

No. PowerShell may require a private matching runtime copy, and the system copy may differ in architecture or servicing state.

Will reinstalling PowerShell fix every case?

No. It is the correct first repair when pwsh.exe owns the failure. Windows corruption, MSIX package identity, antivirus quarantine, and another application’s incomplete deployment require different fixes.
