What pwmtr64v.dll is and the safest fix
pwmtr64v.dll is a genuine Lenovo application DLL used by older ThinkPad power-management software. The 64v name identifies the 64-bit variant. It has appeared with Lenovo utilities named ThinkPad Power Manager Background Monitor and Tray Battery Gauge, Lenovo Settings Power, and Lenovo Hardware Settings – Background Monitor.
It is not a Windows system file, so do not download it from a random DLL website or copy it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. The safest repair is to reinstall the Lenovo power package made for your exact ThinkPad model and Windows version.

Current Lenovo systems generally use Lenovo Power and Battery Driver, described as the successor to Lenovo Power Manager Driver. Older ThinkPads may require the legacy Lenovo Power Management Driver instead.
Fix 1: Reinstall the Lenovo power package
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
This is the most likely solution because the error usually means that Lenovo’s installation is incomplete, damaged, removed by cleanup software, or left with a broken startup entry.

1. Identify the ThinkPad model
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
msinfo32. - Press Enter.
- Read the System Model field in System Information.
- Also note whether System Type says
x64-based PCorx86-based PC.
You can alternatively identify the computer through Lenovo Support using its automatic detection or serial-number search. The model matters because Lenovo packages are not universal across ThinkPad generations.
2. Check whether Lenovo power software is installed
- Right-click Start and select Installed apps.
- Search for:
- Lenovo Power and Battery Driver
- Lenovo Power Manager
- Lenovo Settings
- Lenovo Hardware Settings
- ThinkPad Power Manager
- If an older Lenovo power or settings component is present, select its three-dot menu and choose Uninstall only if you are preparing for a clean reinstall.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
On older Windows versions, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features and look for the same entries.
3. Download the matching package from Lenovo
Open Lenovo Support, enter the exact model, and select your installed Windows version. Look under Power Management, Power, or a similar driver category.

- Lenovo Power and Battery Driver for supported newer systems.
- Lenovo Power Management Driver for older systems that still require the legacy utility.
- The correct architecture if Lenovo provides separate x86 and x64 downloads.
The legacy package may list separate 32-bit and 64-bit installers. Lenovo’s documentation identifies PWMTR64V.DLL as the 64-bit Power Manager DLL and PWMTR32V.DLL as the 32-bit counterpart. Do not substitute one for the other.
4. Install and test
- Right-click the downloaded Lenovo installer.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Follow the setup wizard.
- Restart Windows even if the installer does not require it.
- Open the Lenovo power application or restart the program that showed the error.
A successful repair normally removes the startup message and restores the associated Lenovo power-management or battery features. The DLL may not appear under exactly the same name in a current package because Lenovo’s software has changed between product generations.
If the error remains, uninstall the old Lenovo component, restart, download the package again, and install it fresh. If the installer refuses to run, record its compatibility message rather than copying a DLL from another computer.

Fix 2: Install pending Windows updates
Time needed: 5–15 minutes, plus restart time
A Windows upgrade can remove or disrupt older Lenovo utilities. Updating Windows will not normally recreate a missing Lenovo DLL, but it can repair compatibility and servicing problems that prevent the correct Lenovo package from installing.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer.
- Try the Lenovo installer again.
If the error began immediately after an upgrade, the Lenovo utility may simply be obsolete on that Windows release. In that case, install the current model-specific Lenovo Power and Battery Driver or remove the legacy utility if you no longer need its tray and battery features.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Windows Security or another antivirus product may have quarantined the DLL. This is particularly important if the file existed previously and disappeared without you uninstalling Lenovo software.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any detection related to
pwmtr64v.dllor Lenovo power software. - Check the recorded file location.
Do not restore the file automatically. First verify that it was stored in the Lenovo application directory, such as a ThinkPad utilities folder under C:Program Files or C:Program Files (x86). Paths vary by model and installer.
If the file is in a temporary folder, System32, SysWOW64, or an unrelated application directory, leave it quarantined and run a full scan. If it was in the expected Lenovo directory, check the file’s Properties > Digital Signatures tab and confirm that the package came from Lenovo. Reinstalling the signed Lenovo package is preferable to restoring an isolated file. Microsoft notes that a restored quarantined file may be detected again.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
SFC and DISM repair Windows components. They do not normally restore a Lenovo application DLL removed from Program Files, so use them when the error followed an interrupted upgrade, broader Windows corruption, or several unrelated system-file failures.

- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the Lenovo power package if
pwmtr64v.dllis still missing.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test again. If it reports that it could not repair some files, run DISM once more, restart, and repeat SFC. Do not keep repeating these commands as a substitute for reinstalling Lenovo software.
If manually checking Windows components is taking longer than expected, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what needs repair; its full-version repair is required to apply fixes, and it is not a replacement for reinstalling the Lenovo package.
Fix 5: Check for a missing runtime dependency
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that pwmtr64v.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by the Lenovo DLL.
Some reported file metadata associates variants with older Microsoft Visual C++ libraries, but Lenovo does not establish one universal dependency set for every model and release.
Use this order:
- Run the Lenovo installer again and read its complete error message.
- Check whether it names a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime.
- If it does, use Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.
- Match the runtime architecture to the Lenovo application. A 64-bit Lenovo component generally needs the x64 runtime, while a 32-bit component needs x86.
- Install the required package.
- Restart Windows and test the Lenovo utility.
Multiple Visual C++ Redistributable versions can coexist. Installing the newest package does not prove that an older Lenovo installer’s specific dependency has been restored. Do not download individual runtime DLLs from third-party file sites.
Fix 6: Update Lenovo drivers and reinstall the package
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
A damaged chipset, power-management, or Lenovo system-interface driver can prevent the power utility from starting correctly.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Batteries.
- Review Microsoft AC Adapter and Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery.
- Expand System devices and look for Lenovo power-management or system-interface entries.
- Right-click a device only when it has a warning icon or Lenovo’s installation instructions identify it as part of the repair.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the model-specific Lenovo power package again.
Avoid uninstalling battery devices casually. Windows can rediscover them, but removing the wrong device can create additional power problems. Lenovo’s package remains the authoritative source for model-specific drivers.

If identifying the correct driver manually means comparing many model-specific packages, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan the system and identify outdated drivers; its full-version driver installation is required, and reinstalling the Lenovo power package remains the definitive fix for this Lenovo-specific DLL.
Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent update
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
Use System Restore only when the error started immediately after a driver installation, Windows update, cleanup operation, or software change and a restore point exists.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not affect personal documents, but it can remove applications and drivers installed after the selected restore point. After Windows starts, install the correct Lenovo package rather than relying on an old restored installation.
Do not use regsvr32 as a first fix
Time needed: Not applicable
regsvr32 registers DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose command for recovering missing application files.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not run this as a repair:
regsvr32 pwmtr64v.dll
There is no verified evidence that this Lenovo DLL should be manually registered. The command may return an error saying that the module was loaded but the entry point DllRegisterServer was not found. Reinstall the Lenovo package instead.
Do not copy or download the DLL manually
A standalone download can be:
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- From an incompatible Lenovo software generation.
- Missing its dependent files.
- Modified or unsafe.
- Unable to recreate the startup task, registry entries, or supporting drivers.
Do not place it in System32, SysWOW64, or the Lenovo directory by hand. Use Lenovo Support for the exact model and Microsoft for Windows components and runtimes.
Why the error appears at startup
Older Lenovo power utilities often start a background monitor or tray battery component with Windows. If that startup entry remains after the DLL is deleted, the error appears before you open any application.

Common triggers include:
- An incomplete Lenovo Power Manager or Settings installation.
- A Windows upgrade or cleanup utility removing legacy files.
- A Lenovo software update replacing part of the installation.
- Antivirus quarantine.
- A failed uninstall that leaves the startup reference behind.
- An old utility becoming incompatible with the current Windows release.
- A missing dependency rather than the named DLL itself.
If the laptop no longer supports the old Lenovo utility and you do not need its tray or battery features, uninstall the obsolete Lenovo component through Installed apps or Programs and Features. Then restart and disable any remaining Lenovo startup task in Task Manager > Startup apps. Removing the orphaned program is cleaner than repeatedly replacing a DLL that belongs to unsupported software.

FAQ
Is pwmtr64v.dll a Windows file?
No. It is a Lenovo application DLL associated with older ThinkPad power-management software. Windows does not normally recreate it through SFC.
Is pwmtr64v.dll safe?
A Lenovo-installed copy in the expected Lenovo program directory may be legitimate. Verify its location, digital signature, and provenance. A copy in System32, a temporary directory, or an unrelated folder should be scanned and treated cautiously.
What does “pwmtr64v.dll was not found” mean?
Usually, the Lenovo power component is missing or incomplete. “The specified module could not be found” can also indicate that a dependency required by the DLL is missing.
Should I install the 64-bit file on every PC?
No. Lenovo distinguishes 64-bit PWMTR64V.DLL from 32-bit PWMTR32V.DLL. Use the architecture required by the installed Lenovo package and your Windows installation.
Recommended Free Tools
Can I fix it with SFC or DISM?
Only when Windows itself may be damaged. These commands do not normally restore a third-party Lenovo DLL. Reinstall the Lenovo power package for the actual file repair.
What if I do not need Lenovo Power Manager?
Uninstall the obsolete Lenovo component and disable its orphaned startup task. If the current Lenovo package supports your model, use it instead of forcing the historical utility to run.
