Xbox has named Maria Angelidou-Smith the incoming CEO of Mojang and Minecraft, with a start date of October 19, 2026. The announcement mentions her experience with monetization, but it does not announce a Minecraft price increase, new paid features, or changes to Marketplace rules. Some online commenters have speculated about increased monetization; those comments do not show how players broadly feel.
What Xbox announced
In an October 8, 2026 Xbox Wire announcement, Xbox said Maria Angelidou-Smith will join as CEO of Mojang and Minecraft on Monday, October 19. She will report to Xbox leadership. Xbox said her first priority will be learning from the teams and communities that know Minecraft.

Kayleen Walters, who had been at Mojang, will become president of XP, a new Xbox division focused on experiences around franchises beyond the games themselves. Xbox describes XP’s scope as film and television adaptations, licensing and merchandise, sponsor and brand partnerships, and live or location-based experiences.

Xbox executive Asha Sharma said the company wanted a leader experienced in building products for very large communities, with technical depth and an understanding of how creators, product, technology, and monetization work together. That is Xbox’s explanation for the appointment—not a statement that it plans to change Minecraft’s business model.

- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
Xbox says Angelidou-Smith spent nearly a decade at Meta, where she led Facebook Groups as well as work involving Events, Creators, Search, Profile, and Monetization. The announcement says Facebook Groups were used by more than 1.8 billion people each month. That figure and description are Xbox’s account of her background; they are not evidence of a planned Minecraft change.
Xbox also says Walters helped grow Minecraft consumer products into a multibillion-dollar business with more than 250 licensees. Those figures describe the consumer-products business, not the game’s in-game monetization.

What the announcement says about Minecraft monetization
Monetization appears in Xbox’s stated criteria for the role, but the appointment announcement does not specify any change to Minecraft prices, paid features, or Marketplace policies. It does not say that new monetization is coming.
Xbox’s broader April 2026 strategy statement refers to sustainable Game Pass economics, long-term stewardship of live games, and creator-centric platforms such as Minecraft. Those are company-wide priorities, not Minecraft-specific policy announcements. Likewise, a May 2026 Microsoft developer article discusses the work involved in maintaining long-running games; it does not announce a new paid feature or Marketplace rule.

What players are worried about—and what that evidence can show
Some users on Reddit have speculated about increased Marketplace monetization and other possible changes. That establishes that the concern has been voiced, not that it is widespread: the comments are anecdotal, and no representative poll measuring player opinion was found. One question in the discussion was whether Mojang employees might have to spend more time working on the game. The appointment announcement does not answer that question.
For now, the distinction is straightforward: Xbox has announced a leadership change and described the incoming CEO’s relevant experience; it has not announced a Minecraft monetization change. Any claim about what she may do after taking the role remains speculation.

What Minecraft creators should check
Minecraft’s Usage Guidelines for Fans and Creators set boundaries on fan and creator activities, including restrictions on using Minecraft gameplay to promote unrelated products without prior written approval. The page says the guidelines may be updated, but it does not connect a policy change to this appointment. Creators should consult the current guidelines directly rather than treating the CEO announcement as a change in permissions.
