It is a preservation release for the games’ code—not a blanket release of every commercial asset, brand or piece of packaging associated with Zork. You can approach the games through a ready-to-play commercial anthology or study and build from source using ZILF and a Z-machine interpreter.
What Microsoft released
Microsoft’s Open Source Programs Office, Team Xbox and Activision announced the three Zork titles under the MIT License on November 20, 2025. The work centers on historical source repositories: Microsoft added licensing and documentation through upstream pull requests. That makes the code available under an open-source license while preserving its historical character, rather than presenting it as a newly modernized game.

Microsoft described its aim as putting historically important code in the hands of students, teachers and developers so they can study, learn from and play it. The company also said the goal was to preserve Zork as a space for exploration and education, not to modernize it.

The license applies to the released source code. Under the MIT License, users may generally use, modify and redistribute covered code, subject to the license’s conditions, including retaining its copyright and permission notice in copies or substantial portions. Check the license file in the repository you use to confirm the terms attached to that particular code.

- Used Book in Good Condition
Microsoft explicitly drew a boundary around the release: commercial packaging and marketing materials are not included, and the release grants no rights to trademarks or brands, which remain with their respective owners. An open-source code license therefore should not be read as permission to reuse Zork branding, package a derivative as an official product, or redistribute every asset found in a commercial edition. The announcement is about code, not a general clearance of the commercial games’ associated materials.
Why Zork became three games
The original Zork began as a large mainframe game. Microsoft says it was too large for early home computers, so Infocom divided it into three titles: Zork I, Zork II and Zork III. That split let the experience reach computers with much tighter storage and memory limits than the mainframe environment.

- A classic Telltale game that lead to their breakout hits The Walking Dead, The Wolf Among Us, Game of Thrones, and Tales from the Borderlands
The Z-Machine helped make the games portable. Rather than tying the story to one computer’s hardware, Infocom used a common story format that could run on multiple platforms through compatible interpreters. The format and the division into smaller games addressed different parts of the same problem: fitting the experience into the home-computer era while making it available across different machines.
Is the released code the original 1977 MIT Zork?
There is a real MIT connection, but it needs to be described precisely. A separate historical-source repository identifies its 1977 Zork material as coming from MIT’s Tapes of Tech Square collection. It describes the source as largely written in MDL for a PDP-10 running ITS and names Tim Anderson, Marc Blank, Bruce Daniels and Dave Lebling as its creators.

That archival provenance concerns the early mainframe Zork source. It is not the same claim as saying the later commercial trilogy was written at MIT or that the three released game repositories are simply the 1977 archive under new names. The mainframe game is the historical starting point; Infocom’s three commercial titles followed as a way to bring Zork to home computers.

| Route | Best suited to | What you need | What it provides |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Zork Anthology on GOG | Casual play and a ready-made commercial experience | The anthology and a compatible system; Microsoft points to it as a way to play | A commercial anthology rather than a build from the newly released source |
| Build from source with ZILF | Source study, classroom use, preservation work or development | The released source, ZILF to compile it, and a Z-machine runner to play the resulting game | A source-based route that involves compiling and running the output yourself |
For straightforward play, the anthology avoids the extra build steps. For learning how the games are represented and compiled, the source route is more instructive, but it is not the same as installing a ready-to-play edition. Microsoft points readers toward ZILF and Z-machine runners for this route; the announcement does not prescribe a particular runner, operating system, or command sequence.

Why the release matters for preservation
The value is not just that old code can be downloaded. Licensing and documentation make historical code easier to examine, teach from and adapt within the license’s boundaries. The Z-Machine’s portability also shows how Infocom separated a story from any one computer, helping explain why Zork could move from a PDP-10 environment to multiple home-computer platforms.

Microsoft says Zork has remained available and playable more than forty years later. The release supports continued study and play, while its clear exclusions matter just as much as its permission: preservation of source code does not automatically preserve or license every part of the commercial product.
