SuperTuxKart’s 2019 Networking Beta Added Online Racing

SuperTuxKart’s January 2019 0.10-beta1 opened online racing to testing, with LAN and WAN games, player-hosted servers, ranked play and spectating. The project marked version 1.0 in April as the official arrival of online multiplayer.

SuperTuxKart’s online-racing beta was version 0.10-beta1, announced on January 11, 2019. It let players test LAN and internet races, host or join servers, and enter a race as a spectator. The project later identified version 1.0, released in April 2019, as the release that officially brought online multiplayer to the game.

What the 0.10-beta1 networking beta added

The January 2019 announcement described a major step beyond stable version 0.9.3: racing with friends or other players around the world over a local-area network (LAN) or the wider internet (WAN). It was a testing release for the online implementation, not the point at which the project’s history says online multiplayer officially arrived.

  • Host a game: Start a server from the game or run a standalone server on your own computer.
  • Join a game: Connect to an existing server, including community servers.
  • Race or spectate: Join a race in progress as a spectator, then take part in the next race.
  • Ranked play: The beta announcement also described ranked servers with a global player ranking.

The project’s beta announcement was authored by Hiker and dated January 11, 2019. Hiker wrote, “We are now confident that our code is stable enough for a beta release”. Read the beta announcement.

How the beta became an official online release

The project’s chronology distinguishes the experimental beta from the completed release. The January build carried the 0.10 label, while version 1.0 arrived in April 2019 and officially brought online multiplayer, according to the project history.

The 1.0 announcement described online normal races, time trials, soccer, battle, and Capture the Flag. It also said players could create a server through the game interface or use community-provided servers. The project reported that the multiplayer implementation represented more than 20,000 lines of network-related code and 18 months of work; those are the developers’ own figures, not an independent evaluation. The post also counted more than 2,500 commits and 300 resolved issues between 0.9.3 and 1.0. See the 1.0 release announcement.

LAN, WAN, hosting, and local multiplayer: what differs

Setup What it means What the project described
LAN online race Players connect over a local network. The 0.10-beta1 announcement said the beta supported LAN games.
WAN online race Players connect over the internet. The beta announcement said players could race people worldwide.
Self-hosted online game One player runs the game server, either through the game or as a standalone server. Both options were described in the beta announcement.
Community server Players join a server provided by others. The beta and 1.0 announcements described joining existing or community servers; they do not establish present-day server availability.
Local play on one PC Players share one computer rather than connecting over a network. The official game listing says up to eight friends can play together on one PC.

SuperTuxKart’s official listing describes it as a multiplatform, 3D, open-source arcade kart racer, and says players can race online. It lists standard 1.5 packages as free of charge. The listing does not say that any particular controller is required. See the game listing.

What connection quality meant in the beta guidance

For smoother online play, the 2019 beta post recommended choosing a server with ping below 150 ms. That was the project’s guidance for the beta, not a guarantee of performance for every current server or connection. It warned that higher latency could make karts stutter or seem to teleport; an unstable connection, packet loss, or jitter could cause similar behavior. The beta post explains the caveat.

Why “beta status” is historical, not current

The 2019 milestone concerns the first online-racing beta, not the game’s present development state. The official news page records a separate first beta for STK 1.5 on October 31, 2024, and also includes SuperTuxKart Evolution development updates in 2026. Those are later milestones, distinct from 0.10-beta1. Check the official news page for project updates.
