Microsoft eventually confirmed Phil Spencer’s retirement—but not in July 2025, when the rumor first circulated. The company denied an imminent departure on July 2, 2025, then announced on February 20, 2026, that Spencer had decided to retire and that Asha Sharma would lead Microsoft Gaming.

Microsoft eventually confirmed Phil Spencer’s retirement—but not in July 2025, when the rumor first circulated. On July 2, 2025, Microsoft said Spencer was not retiring “anytime soon” and rejected reports that he would leave after the next-generation Xbox launch. On February 20, 2026, Microsoft announced that Spencer had decided to retire, with Asha Sharma taking over as executive vice president and CEO of Microsoft Gaming.

That makes the original headline accurate only as a time-stamped report of Microsoft’s July 2025 position, not as a current description of Xbox leadership. As of August 12, 2026, Spencer is no longer CEO of Microsoft Gaming. He remained with Microsoft in an advisory role through the summer of 2026 to support the transition.

What Microsoft said in July 2025

The rumor emerged during Microsoft’s large-scale layoffs in July 2025. Online reports claimed that Spencer would retire after the launch of Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox hardware and that Sarah Bond could succeed him.

Microsoft pushed back on both the timing and the broader claim. Xbox communications chief Kari Perez told The Verge that Spencer was not retiring anytime soon. Microsoft communications chief Frank Shaw characterized the rumor as made up.

The wording mattered. “Not retiring anytime soon” was a denial of an imminent departure—not a promise that Spencer would remain in the job indefinitely. Microsoft’s later announcement showed why that distinction is important: Spencer had already been discussing stepping back by the fall of 2025, but the actual leadership change did not occur until February 2026.

What happened next

Microsoft’s official announcement on February 20, 2026, changed the status of the story:

  • Phil Spencer decided to retire after a long career at Microsoft.
  • Asha Sharma became executive vice president and CEO of Microsoft Gaming.
  • Spencer stayed on as an adviser through the summer to help with the handoff.
  • Sarah Bond left Microsoft rather than succeeding Spencer.
  • Matt Booty became executive vice president and chief content officer.

Microsoft said Spencer had discussed stepping back the previous fall. The announcement did not say that a next-generation console launch triggered his departure, and there is no verified basis for treating the transition as tied to a particular hardware release.

Asha Sharma is now leading Microsoft Gaming

Sharma reports to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. Microsoft described her background as including leadership of consumer platforms at Microsoft, service as chief operating officer at Instacart, and a vice-presidential role at Meta.

In her opening message, Sharma highlighted three broad priorities:

  1. Making great games.
  2. Renewing Microsoft’s commitment to core Xbox fans and the console business.
  3. Building a broader future of play across PC, mobile, and cloud.

Those are announced priorities, not proof that the strategy has already produced measurable results. The practical questions for Xbox are how Sharma balances console investment with Microsoft’s expansion across other devices, how the company manages its large first-party portfolio, and how it maintains trust with Xbox players during the leadership change.

Sarah Bond did not become Spencer’s successor

The 2025 rumor specifically suggested that Sarah Bond could take over from Spencer. That did not happen. Microsoft’s February 2026 announcement said Bond was leaving the company, while Matt Booty was moving into the chief content officer role and Sharma became CEO of Microsoft Gaming.

Bond’s departure is therefore a separate part of the reorganization, not evidence that the original succession report was simply delayed. The official announcement identifies Sharma—not Bond—as Spencer’s successor.

Why Phil Spencer’s departure matters to Xbox

Spencer began working at Microsoft as an intern in June 1988. He became closely associated with Xbox after the brand’s launch, was identified by secondary reporting as becoming head of Xbox in 2014, and was described in Microsoft’s official biography as CEO of Microsoft Gaming by 2022.

  • Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends

By October 2023, Microsoft’s biography described his responsibilities as covering Xbox, Xbox Game Studios, Bethesda, Activision, Blizzard, and King. That remit expanded substantially after Microsoft’s acquisitions of Mojang, ZeniMax/Bethesda, and Activision Blizzard.

Microsoft credits Spencer’s leadership with overseeing Xbox console launches, expanding Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Cloud Gaming, and broadening Microsoft’s gaming reach across console, PC, mobile, and cloud. In the February 2026 announcement, Nadella also credited Spencer with nearly tripling the size of the gaming business. Those are Microsoft’s corporate characterizations, not independently audited performance figures, but they illustrate the scale of the organization Spencer leaves behind.

The key correction

Microsoft’s July 2025 denial and its February 2026 retirement announcement are not necessarily contradictory. The first addressed whether Spencer was leaving imminently. The second confirmed that he later made and executed the decision to retire.

The accurate summary is: Microsoft denied reports of an imminent Phil Spencer retirement in July 2025, but later announced on February 20, 2026, that Spencer was retiring and Asha Sharma would lead Microsoft Gaming.

Spencer did not retire immediately on July 2, 2025. Sarah Bond did not succeed him. And the available official announcement does not establish that a next-generation Xbox launch caused the transition.
