Microsoft really did test a shared Xbox Game Pass plan—but it was not a confirmed new 2026 rollout. The Xbox Game Pass Ultimate Friends & Family preview began on August 4, 2022, initially for Xbox Insiders in Colombia and Ireland. It allowed one subscriber to add up to four other people, each using a separate Microsoft account. There is no verified evidence in the reviewed sources that the plan has returned as a current public U.S. offering.
What Microsoft tested
The preview was a shared subscription rather than informal account sharing. One primary subscriber purchased the special Xbox Game Pass – Insider Preview plan and could invite up to four additional people, for a maximum group of five.

Each participant used their own Microsoft account. That distinction matters: members did not have to share one gamertag, password, or save-data identity. Microsoft described the preview as providing access to Game Pass Ultimate games, content, and benefits across console, PC, and cloud, although the announcement did not establish that every member could use every feature simultaneously.

Microsoft’s original Xbox Wire announcement documented the member limit, separate accounts, geographic restriction, and preview conditions.
Friends & Family was broader than a traditional family plan
Microsoft later used the name Xbox Game Pass Ultimate Friends & Family. “Family plan” is a convenient shorthand, but it can give the wrong impression. The product was designed for friends as well as relatives, and the available announcement did not require all members to belong to the same household.
It also was not an extension of Microsoft Family Safety. Family Safety provides tools such as screen-time controls, content restrictions, and purchase management. It does not turn one Game Pass subscription into multiple memberships.

Timeline: from preview to uncertain status
- August 4, 2022: Microsoft announced the initial Xbox Insider preview in Colombia and Ireland.
- 2022–2023: The test operated as a regional preview and was branded Friends & Family.
- February 21, 2023: The Xbox Wire archive recorded an expansion to six additional countries. The available evidence here does not establish a global retail launch.
- By October 2025: Later reporting described the plan as unavailable and noted that Xbox still did not offer a generally available family plan.
- As of the evidence reviewed for this article: There is no verified official announcement confirming a new 2026 test or a public U.S. Friends & Family sign-up.
Xbox Wire’s Friends & Family archive confirms the later expansion. An October 2025 Windows Central report provides later context, but it is not a Microsoft cancellation notice. The careful conclusion is that the preview did not become a confirmed global retail subscription.
What the preview required
The trial was experimental, and its rules made that clear:
- The primary member had to buy the preview plan through the Microsoft Store.
- Invited members used their own Microsoft accounts.
- All members had to reside in the same country.
- Existing subscription time could be converted into time under the preview plan.
- Microsoft said that conversion was final until the new membership expired.
- Existing subscriptions held by invited users could cause acceptance problems.
- Xbox All Access members could not participate.
- Microsoft documented errors that could occur when adding multiple family members at once.
These conditions are important because old headlines can make the test sound like a finished product. It was a limited preview with eligibility, conversion, and account-management constraints.

Home Xbox sharing is not the same thing
Many Xbox households already share eligible digital games and Game Pass access through the subscriber’s designated Home Xbox. That feature is useful, but it does not create a five-person subscription.

A subscriber can designate one console as their Home Xbox, allowing other profiles on that console to use eligible shared content. That does not provide four separate memberships across four households, nor does it guarantee equivalent PC or cloud access for every account.
Microsoft Q&A guidance describes the device and entitlement limitations. Because those pages are community Q&A responses rather than complete product terms, treat them as attributed guidance rather than a universal statement covering every Game Pass feature. A separate Microsoft Q&A response about Game Pass sharing also cautions against assuming that a PC-only entitlement becomes a console entitlement for another account.

Can you buy the family plan in the United States?
There is no verified public U.S. Friends & Family sign-up option in the reviewed evidence. The original preview was not initially available in the United States, and old articles, screenshots, reseller listings, or shared-login offers should not be treated as proof of current availability.
For current U.S. plan names, prices, catalog access, cloud availability, and renewal terms, use the official Xbox Game Pass page. Microsoft’s current lineup has changed since 2022 and includes plans such as Core, Standard, PC Game Pass, and Ultimate, with benefits varying by plan, platform, and region. Catalog size and available titles also change over time.
Microsoft states that subscriptions renew automatically at the regular price after promotional periods unless canceled. Any cost comparison should therefore use the live purchase page and account for recurring billing rather than relying on old preview pricing.

What a revived plan would need to clarify
If Microsoft announces Friends & Family again, the headline member limit will not be enough to judge its value. Look for these details in the official terms:
- Price and tier: Would it be based on Ultimate, a new tier, or a restricted catalog?
- Member limit: Does “five members” mean five accounts, five devices, or five simultaneous players?
- Simultaneous play: Can members play at the same time on separate Xbox consoles, PCs, and cloud sessions?
- Geography: Must members live in the same country, the same household, or the same region?
- Benefits: Are day-one releases, cloud gaming, EA Play, perks, multiplayer access, and PC access included for everyone?
- Account changes: Can members be removed and replaced, and how often?
- Existing subscriptions: Is remaining subscription time converted, and is that conversion reversible?
- Parental controls: Which controls remain separate from the subscription itself?
The 2022 preview confirms that up to five people could belong to the group. It does not confirm five simultaneous play sessions or every cross-device restriction, so those assumptions should not be carried into a future product.
Practical options for Xbox households today
There is no single substitute that reproduces the tested plan in every situation:

- Buy separate subscriptions when multiple people need independent access on different consoles or PCs. Compare the current plans on Xbox’s official page, including recurring prices and platform restrictions.
- Buy games outright if only one or two titles matter and recurring access is poor value for the household.
- Use Microsoft Family Safety or Xbox Family Settings for parental controls, not for sharing Game Pass entitlements. The Xbox Family Settings app manages safety and family features but is not a subscription-sharing plan.
Families using other platforms may also compare their own ecosystems: PlayStation Plus, Nintendo Switch Online, and Amazon Luna have different membership structures and catalogs. None of them replaces Xbox Game Pass for Xbox console, Windows PC, or Xbox cloud access.
The bottom line
“Microsoft is testing a family plan for Xbox Game Pass” was a fair description of the August 2022 news, not a reliable description of a newly confirmed 2026 program. Microsoft tested Friends & Family, expanded it regionally in 2023, and never provided verified evidence in the reviewed sources of a full global retail launch. U.S. readers should check the live Xbox Game Pass page for plans they can actually purchase—and should not confuse Home Xbox sharing, Family Safety, or shared-login offers with a supported multi-user subscription.
