The widely reported incident was real, but it was not caused by a new August 2026 update. Reports began after Nintendo Switch 2 system version 21.0.0 launched on November 10, 2025. Some third-party docks continued charging the console but stopped sending video to a TV or monitor. Several manufacturers reportedly issued firmware workarounds, so “bricked” overstates the evidence for many affected units.
Nintendo said it had “no intention” of hindering or invalidating legal third-party dock compatibility. Its published update notes do not confirm that version 21.0.0 deliberately blocked third-party docks.

What happened after Switch 2 version 21.0.0?
Owners began reporting dock problems soon after version 21.0.0 was released on November 10, 2025. The typical failure was not a completely dead console or dock: a Switch 2 could still work normally in handheld mode, and a third-party dock could continue charging it, while HDMI output stopped working.
The next updates—version 21.0.1 on November 24 and version 21.1.0 on December 8—did not specifically acknowledge third-party dock failures in Nintendo’s published notes. Nintendo’s system update history describes version 21.0.0 in terms of system features and general stability improvements, not an intentional anti-third-party-dock measure.

- Portable and Lightweight: This Switch 2 dock with classic red and blue colour match is only 109g(0.24lb), 7.5 in * 2.3 in * 1.3 in size, which is much more portable and lightweight than official dock. Its work capability is the same as official standard.
The reports involved some portable USB-C docks and dock-conversion products associated with brands including Jemdo, Antank/SIWIQU, Genki and RREAKA. However, there is no reliable Nintendo-certified list showing every affected or unaffected model. Compatibility appears to vary by product, chipset and hardware revision.
Coverage from Tom’s Hardware and Nintendo Life reported manufacturer workarounds and Nintendo’s position that it did not intend to invalidate legal third-party dock compatibility.
“Bricked” is not always the right word
A true brick means hardware is effectively unrecoverable: it cannot power or charge, output video, enter an update mode or be restored using the maker’s recovery procedure. The evidence surrounding version 21.0.0 does not establish widespread permanent hardware destruction.

| Symptom | More likely interpretation |
|---|---|
| Charges but shows no picture on the TV | Compatibility, HDMI or dock-firmware problem |
| USB accessories work but video does not | Video negotiation or firmware issue |
| Works after a manufacturer firmware update | Recoverable compatibility problem |
| No power, charging or update mode | Possible genuine dock failure |
| The console fails with multiple docks | Possible console, adapter or service issue |
Some docks reportedly recovered after their manufacturers released firmware updates. That points to a compatibility or communication problem rather than universal permanent failure. It is reasonable to describe an affected dock as “bricked” only when the manufacturer confirms that it cannot be recovered.
Did Nintendo intentionally block third-party docks?
That remains unresolved. The timing led owners and accessory makers to suspect that the update changed how the console and dock communicate—sometimes described as a handshake, authentication or protocol change. Those are possible technical explanations, not confirmed Nintendo engineering details.
Nintendo reportedly said it had no intention of hindering or invalidating legal third-party dock compatibility. The official changelog also does not identify a deliberate third-party-dock block. Until Nintendo or an accessory manufacturer publishes technical documentation, claims that Nintendo intentionally “killed” third-party docks should be treated as speculation.

How to troubleshoot a dock that lost TV output
- Test handheld mode. If the Switch 2 works normally when undocked, that is evidence against a completely bricked console.
- Try the official Switch 2 dock. Nintendo identifies the Switch 2 dock as model BEE-005. If the official dock works while the third-party dock does not, the third-party dock or its firmware is the likely problem.
- Check the power adapter. Nintendo says to verify the Switch 2 AC adapter model MOD. NGN-01. An unsuitable adapter can cause dock and video-output problems.
- Try another HDMI cable and TV input. This rules out a cable, display or input-selection failure.
- Power-cycle everything. Disconnect the HDMI cable, unplug the AC adapter from both the wall and dock, wait at least 30 seconds, then reconnect power, HDMI and the console.
- Restart the console. Hold the POWER button for at least three seconds, select Power Options, then Restart.
- Check the exact dock model and revision. Look for the model number on the dock, packaging or manufacturer documentation. Do not assume that two visually identical docks use the same firmware.
- Use only manufacturer-approved firmware. Search the maker’s official support page for the precise model and hardware revision. A firmware package intended for a similar-looking dock can make the accessory unusable.
- Contact the manufacturer or seller. If no official firmware exists, use the warranty or return process instead of experimenting with generic firmware.
Nintendo’s dock troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the adapter, restarting, disconnecting power and testing another dock. If the Switch 2 fails with multiple docks, Nintendo says the console may require service; owners should include the original dock and AC adapter for testing.

Do not confuse Nintendo’s dock updater with third-party firmware
Nintendo’s official dock-update instructions are for supported Nintendo docks, not a universal updater for third-party products. To update the console itself, use System Settings → System → System Update.
The Nintendo dock-firmware page also identifies the original Switch OLED dock as model HEG-007. That update path should not be treated as a general solution for third-party Switch 2 docks. The original Switch dock is not a substitute for the Switch 2 dock, and the Switch 2 dock is not compatible with the original Switch, Switch OLED or Switch Lite.

- This is a replacement for the AC Adapter included with the Nintendo Switch 2 system.
- It can be connected to either the Nintendo Switch 2 system or Nintendo Switch 2 dock.
- The AC adapter and cable can be separated for easier storage.
What about overheating or intermittent output?
A dock that loses output intermittently may have a separate power, HDMI or thermal problem. Nintendo advises unplugging an overheated dock, allowing it to cool, improving ventilation and checking that its vent is unobstructed. Its guidance also says to verify that the dock fan operates when the dock becomes warm. See Nintendo’s dock overheating and TV-output troubleshooting page.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the problem affecting every third-party dock?
No. Reports were uneven: some products were said to remain functional, while others needed firmware revisions. Individual posts, polls and videos can show that an owner experienced a failure, but they cannot establish how many units are affected or prove that Nintendo caused the problem intentionally.
For that reason, buyers should not treat every USB-C hub or every third-party dock as either safe or unusable. A USB-C hub designed for laptops is not automatically a Switch 2 dock. Video output, power delivery, USB-C behavior and Nintendo-specific requirements all matter.

What is the current Switch 2 update status?
On the latest official U.S. Nintendo support information available for this report, the newest listed Switch 2 version is 22.5.0, released June 15, 2026. Its notes mention accessibility-language additions and general stability improvements, not a new third-party-dock block.
That means reports describing a “new” August 2026 update that bricked many docks are misdated unless supported by separate, current evidence. Release dates can vary by region: Nintendo’s Japanese support information lists version 22.5.0 as June 16, 2026.
Should you buy a third-party Switch 2 dock?
If maximum compatibility and Nintendo-supported troubleshooting matter most, the official dock is the conservative choice. It is less appealing if you need a compact travel accessory, extra ports or more flexibility.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA third-party dock can still make sense, but prioritize supportability over port count or launch price. Look for:
- Explicit Nintendo Switch 2 compatibility.
- A clearly printed model number and hardware-revision information.
- A manufacturer support page with model-specific firmware.
- A documented update or recovery process.
- A warranty and practical return policy.
- Power-delivery requirements that match your setup.
- Support for the HDMI output mode used by your TV or monitor.
A portable dock with no support channel leaves you exposed if a future Nintendo system update changes compatibility. Do not buy a product described only as a generic “Switch-compatible” hub unless the vendor specifically names Switch 2 and explains its firmware support.
The bottom line
The underlying event happened after Switch 2 version 21.0.0 on November 10, 2025. Some third-party docks lost video output, but the available evidence does not prove that many were permanently destroyed, nor that Nintendo deliberately blocked them. Test the official dock, reset the power and HDMI connections, identify the exact third-party model, and install firmware only from the manufacturer for that model. If the console fails with multiple docks, seek Nintendo service rather than replacing accessories blindly.
