“This application failed to start because microsoft.visualstudio.vccodemodel.dll was not found.”
If Windows or an extension reports that microsoft.visualstudio.vccodemodel.dll is missing, the problem usually belongs to Visual Studio, not Windows itself.

The 60-second answer

Do not download this DLL from a random file website, copy it to System32, or run regsvr32 against it.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

microsoft.visualstudio.vccodemodel.dll is the commonly typed lowercase form of Microsoft.VisualStudio.VCCodeModel.dll, a Visual Studio SDK assembly used by C++ automation and extensions. It exposes objects that Visual Studio tools can use to inspect or modify C++ projects, source files, and IDL code. Microsoft documents the Microsoft.VisualStudio.VCCodeModel namespace and interfaces such as VCCodeModel, VCCodeClass, and VCFileCodeModel in the Visual Studio SDK.

The safest first repair is:

  1. Close Visual Studio and the program reporting the error.
  2. Open the Start menu and launch Visual Studio Installer.
  3. Find the installed Visual Studio edition.
  4. Select More > Repair.
  5. Restart Windows when repair finishes.
  6. Open Visual Studio and check for updates.

If the required C++ tooling is not installed, select More > Modify, enable Desktop development with C++, and apply the change.

Use the repair belonging to the exact Visual Studio installation used by the failing extension or automation tool. Multiple Visual Studio editions and generations can be installed side by side.

What this file is

The documented assembly name is:

Microsoft.VisualStudio.VCCodeModel.dll

Its namespace is:

Microsoft.VisualStudio.VCCodeModel

The assembly is part of Visual Studio SDK functionality. The VC++ Code Model gives Visual Studio automation clients access to information about C++ projects, classes, files, declarations, and related code structures. Visual Studio extensions, add-ins, and custom developer tools may load it when they need to inspect or modify C++ code.

Microsoft’s API documentation covers the VCCodeModel interfaces across Visual Studio SDK generations, including Visual Studio 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2022. That does not mean every installation contains the same physical file, version, or folder. The required assembly depends on the Visual Studio edition, installed components, host process, and extension compatibility.

This is not:

  • A Windows system DLL
  • A normal consumer application runtime
  • The Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable
  • A file that belongs in C:WindowsSystem32
  • A file that belongs in C:WindowsSysWOW64
  • A normally self-registering native COM DLL

The phrase “Assembly imported from type library VCCodeModelLibrary” is legacy metadata wording. It is not the name of a separate game, Windows feature, or runtime package.

Why the error appears

The usual causes are:

  1. Visual Studio installation files are damaged or incomplete.
  2. The C++ workload or required SDK component was never installed.
  3. An extension targets a different Visual Studio generation.
  4. A Visual Studio update or uninstall left an inconsistent installation.
  5. Antivirus software quarantined an assembly.
  6. The error concerns a dependency, binding failure, or COM interface mismatch rather than a physically missing file.
  7. Windows component corruption is affecting the installer or host environment.

The exact message can help identify the failure. A simple “was not found” message points toward a missing or inaccessible file. A message such as “Could not load file or assembly” may instead indicate a dependency problem, version mismatch, or incompatible extension.

Fix 1: Repair the matching Visual Studio installation

This is the most likely solution when the error appears while Visual Studio, a C++ extension, or a custom automation tool starts.

Steps

  1. Save your work and close Visual Studio.
  2. Press the Windows key.
  3. Type Visual Studio Installer.
  4. Open the installer.
  5. Locate the Visual Studio edition associated with the failing program.
  6. Select More.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Confirm the repair if Windows asks for permission.
  9. Wait for the installer to complete.
  10. Restart Windows.
  11. Start Visual Studio and reproduce the problem.

Microsoft’s repair process reinstalls existing Visual Studio assemblies and can reacquire damaged installation payloads. It does not require you to find the DLL manually.

How to tell whether it worked

The repair worked if:

  • Visual Studio opens without the missing-file message.
  • The extension loads normally.
  • The C++ project opens and displays its code model.
  • The automation tool can inspect the project again.

If the error remains, return to Visual Studio Installer and use More > Modify. The assembly may belong to a component that is not currently installed.

Fix 2: Install the C++ workload and required SDK components

A minimal Visual Studio installation may not include the C++ tools or SDK components required by an extension.

Steps

  1. Open Visual Studio Installer.
  2. Find the affected Visual Studio installation.
  3. Select More > Modify.
  4. Open the Workloads tab.
  5. Select Desktop development with C++.
  6. Review the installation details shown on the right.
  7. Open the Individual components tab.
  8. Select any SDK, C++ toolset, or Visual Studio SDK component specifically required by the extension.
  9. Select Modify or Install.
  10. Restart Visual Studio after the installation completes.

Microsoft’s official Visual Studio installation and feature-selection guidance explains how to add workloads and individual components. Microsoft also provides C and C++ installation instructions.

Do not assume that installing the separate Visual C++ Redistributable will provide this file. The Redistributable supplies runtime libraries for compiled applications. Microsoft.VisualStudio.VCCodeModel.dll belongs to Visual Studio SDK and C++ development tooling.

Fix 3: Check for a Visual Studio version mismatch

An extension built for Visual Studio 2015 may not work correctly in Visual Studio 2022, even when both installations include C++ support. The same applies to extensions built for other Visual Studio generations.

Check the host version

  1. Open Visual Studio.
  2. Select Help > About Microsoft Visual Studio.
  3. Record the product name and version.
  4. Identify the extension or automation tool producing the error.
  5. Read that extension’s compatibility information.
  6. Check whether it supports the installed Visual Studio generation.
  7. Install the supported Visual Studio version, update the extension, or rebuild it against the installed SDK.

If Visual Studio will not open normally, start it without extensions where possible. You can also temporarily disable the suspected extension from the Visual Studio extension manager or uninstall it from Extensions > Manage Extensions after Visual Studio starts.

Microsoft documents the VCCodeModel API for multiple SDK views, including the Visual Studio SDK 2022 reference and earlier SDK applicability.

Signs of a version mismatch

A version mismatch is more likely when:

  • The DLL exists under a Visual Studio directory.
  • The error began immediately after upgrading Visual Studio.
  • Only one extension fails.
  • The message says “Could not load file or assembly.”
  • The message mentions an incompatible type, interface, or assembly version.
  • Repair restores the file but the extension still fails.

In that situation, copying another version of the DLL into the extension folder is not a reliable repair. Use a compatible extension build or the Visual Studio version for which the tool was designed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine and file integrity

Security software can quarantine an assembly after an update, cleanup operation, or false detection.

Steps

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Look for an event involving Visual Studio or the affected extension.
  5. Do not restore the file merely because its name matches the error.
  6. Verify that the file is located under the expected Visual Studio installation directory.
  7. Check its digital signature in Properties > Digital Signatures.
  8. If it is a genuine Microsoft-signed file, follow your security policy before restoring it.
  9. Open Visual Studio Installer and run More > Repair afterward.

A repair is safer than obtaining a replacement DLL from an unknown source because the installer can restore the assembly and its related components from Microsoft’s installation payload.

Do not disable antivirus protection simply to install a downloaded DLL. A replacement with the wrong architecture, an altered signature, or an incompatible SDK version can create a second problem without fixing the original one.

Fix 5: Update Visual Studio and the installer

A failed or incomplete update can leave Visual Studio with mismatched assemblies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Steps

  1. Open Visual Studio Installer.
  2. Select the Updates view.
  3. Install any available update for the affected Visual Studio edition.
  4. If the installer itself reports an error, close Visual Studio.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Open Visual Studio Installer again.
  7. Try More > Repair.
  8. Start Visual Studio and test the extension again.

Microsoft provides the current Visual Studio update procedure.

If repair and updating repeatedly fail, Microsoft documents repairing the installer and, as a last resort, removing the affected Visual Studio installation before reinstalling it. The cleanup command is:

"C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft Visual StudioInstallerInstallCleanup.exe" -i 17

Use this only after ordinary repair and update attempts fail. Cleanup can affect other Visual Studio 2022 installations. Follow Microsoft’s installer repair and update troubleshooting and Visual Studio removal guidance.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components when broader corruption is present

SFC and DISM do not normally reinstall a Visual Studio SDK assembly. They are useful when Windows servicing is also failing, Visual Studio Installer cannot run correctly, or other Windows files are damaged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run DISM

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the command to finish.
  2. Restart Windows.

Run System File Checker

Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:

sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows and repair Visual Studio again.

Microsoft explains these commands in its Windows image repair guidance.

Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting difficult. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what needs attention, while repair is completed by the full version; it is optional, and Visual Studio Installer repair remains the definitive fix for this assembly.

Fix 7: Update drivers only when the error is part of a wider device problem

A graphics, storage, or chipset driver does not normally provide Microsoft.VisualStudio.VCCodeModel.dll. Driver work is therefore a low-priority step for this specific error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consider it only if the DLL message appeared alongside device failures, Visual Studio crashes, display problems, or Windows instability.

Check Device Manager

  1. Right-click the Start button.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand categories such as Display adapters, Storage controllers, and System devices.
  4. Look for a yellow warning icon.
  5. Right-click the affected device.
  6. Select Update driver.
  7. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  8. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
  9. Repair Visual Studio again and retest.

You can also select Properties > Driver to review the installed driver and use Roll Back Driver if the problem began immediately after a driver update.

Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify which versions need attention, while driver installation is completed by the full version; it is optional and does not replace repairing or reinstalling Visual Studio.

Do not copy this DLL to System32

Copying the file to C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 is the wrong repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Visual Studio loads SDK assemblies according to its own installation layout and the host process. A 64-bit Windows installation does not mean every DLL belongs in both system folders. Placing an assembly in a system directory can leave multiple copies on the computer and cause Windows or .NET to load the wrong one.

The physical location can vary according to the Visual Studio version, edition, installation mode, and selected components. Use the Visual Studio Installer rather than guessing the path.

Do not use regsvr32 for this assembly

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose the native DllRegisterServer entry point. Microsoft.VisualStudio.VCCodeModel.dll is documented as a Visual Studio SDK/.NET assembly and is not normally repaired by self-registration.

If you run:

regsvr32 Microsoft.VisualStudio.VCCodeModel.dll

and receive an error about a missing entry point, that does not mean registration is the missing step. It means the command is inappropriate for the file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

32-bit and 64-bit considerations

Do not choose a replacement based only on whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.

The correct assembly is determined by:

  • The Visual Studio generation
  • The installed Visual Studio edition
  • The extension’s target SDK
  • The host process loading the assembly
  • The installed C++ and SDK components

Older metadata listings may describe a legacy file as 32-bit and show an old version or file size. Those values are not a universal specification for current Visual Studio installations. Never use an old listing to decide which DLL to download.

When reinstalling Visual Studio is necessary

Reinstall the affected Visual Studio instance when:

  • Repair fails repeatedly.
  • The installer cannot restore its payload.
  • The installation was interrupted during an update.
  • Several Visual Studio assemblies are missing.
  • The installation directory has been manually deleted or altered.
  • The extension requires a Visual Studio generation that is no longer installed.

Before removing anything, check Visual Studio Installer for other installed editions. Multiple installations can coexist, and removing or repairing the wrong one will not resolve an extension that targets another host.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install Visual Studio only through Microsoft’s official installer and select the required C++ workload or SDK components during setup.

Quick diagnostic checklist

Before seeking further help, record:

  • The complete error message
  • Whether it says “not found” or “could not load file or assembly”
  • The program, extension, or automation tool that reports it
  • The Visual Studio edition and version
  • Whether the error started after an update, uninstall, migration, or antivirus event
  • Whether the file exists under a Visual Studio directory
  • Whether the file has a valid Microsoft digital signature
  • Whether repairing Visual Studio changed the message
  • Whether the failure affects every Windows user or only one profile

If the file exists but loading still fails, the next investigation should focus on extension compatibility, dependent assemblies, binding redirects, and COM interface versioning rather than on replacing the file.

FAQ

Is microsoft.visualstudio.vccodemodel.dll a genuine file?

Yes. The canonical documented name is Microsoft.VisualStudio.VCCodeModel.dll. The lowercase filename in an error is commonly a normalized form of that assembly name.

Is it part of Windows?

No. It belongs to Visual Studio SDK and C++ code-model functionality. It should not be installed into System32 or SysWOW64.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is it the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable?

No. The Redistributable and the Visual Studio VCCodeModel assembly serve different purposes. Installing the Redistributable is not a substitute for repairing Visual Studio.

Which Visual Studio versions use it?

Microsoft documents the VCCodeModel API across several Visual Studio SDK generations, including 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2022. The extension and host version still need to be compatible.

Should I download the missing DLL?

No. A random replacement may contain malware, have the wrong architecture, belong to another Visual Studio generation, or omit dependencies. Repair or modify the owning Visual Studio installation instead.

Should I register it with regsvr32?

No. This is not normally a self-registering native COM DLL. Use Visual Studio Installer repair and investigate version compatibility if the assembly is present.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the DLL exists but the error remains?

Treat it as a load or compatibility problem. Check the full assembly error, the extension’s supported Visual Studio version, dependencies, antivirus history, and whether the host is loading a different copy.

Will SFC or DISM restore it?

Usually not directly. They repair Windows component corruption. After they finish, repair Visual Studio through Visual Studio Installer to restore Visual Studio assemblies.
