Identify the legitimate file

Microsoft documentation lists FXSTIFF.dll in the Windows printer-driver package. A current or recent copy may be under a path similar to:

C:WindowsSystem32spooldriversx643amd64FXSTIFF.dll

Older Windows installations can contain the file in protected Windows system directories. The exact location depends on the Windows release, architecture, servicing level, and installed printer or fax components. These are historical examples, not interchangeable downloads. A matching filename does not mean that a DLL from another Windows build is safe to copy.

To inspect a file already on your PC:

1. Open File Explorer.
2. Browse to the path shown in the error, if one is provided.
3. Right-click FXSTIFF.dll and select Properties.
4. Open Details and check the description, company, and file version.
5. Open Digital Signatures and inspect the signer.

A legitimate Windows copy should identify Microsoft and normally have a valid Microsoft digital signature. A missing signature, an unexpected folder, or a file recently downloaded from the internet deserves further investigation.

What the error message actually means

The wording helps identify the repair branch.

“The program can’t start because fxstiff.dll is missing”

Windows cannot find the named file where the calling component expects it. The file may have been removed, quarantined, damaged, or omitted from a printer or fax package.

“The specified module could not be found”

Before changing anything, record:

• The complete path shown in the error
• Whether the error appears during startup, sign-in, printing, faxing, or Remote Desktop logon
• Whether the path contains System32spoolDRIVERS
• Whether Windows, a printer driver, or security software was recently updated
• Whether Windows is 32-bit, 64-bit, or ARM64

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart

A missing or damaged Microsoft component can be repaired through normal Windows servicing.

Windows 11

1. Open Start and select Settings.
2. Select Windows Update.
3. Select Check for updates.
4. Install all available updates.
5. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately request it.
6. Return to Windows Update and check again.

Windows 10

1. Open Start and select Settings.
2. Select Update & Security.
3. Choose Windows Update.
4. Select Check for updates.
5. Install the available updates and restart.

Try the operation that produced the error. If the message returns, continue with the component repair commands below. Windows Update may repair the component while also correcting the servicing state that caused the loader failure.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

Run DISM

1. Open Start.
2. Type Command Prompt.
3. Right-click Command Prompt.
4. Select Run as administrator.
5. Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
6. Enter this command:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

1. Press Enter.
2. Wait for the operation to finish.
3. Leave the administrator Command Prompt open.

DISM may use Windows Update as a repair source. Do not close the window merely because progress appears to pause. When it completes, read the result. A successful repair normally reports that the restore operation completed successfully or that no component-store corruption was detected.

Run SFC

In the same elevated Command Prompt, enter:

sfc /scannow

Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then interpret the result:

• Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected system files were not found to be damaged.
• Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart Windows and test again.
• Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: restart, run DISM again, and repeat SFC. If it still fails, inspect the CBS log or use Windows recovery options.
• Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service: restart and retry from an elevated Command Prompt.

Restart after SFC, even when repairs succeed.

Repeating these commands without knowing what changed can be tedious when several Windows components are involved. Fix 3: Repair the printer or fax-driver package

Use this branch when the error path contains a spool-driver folder such as:

C:WindowsSystem32spoolDRIVERSx643

It is also the right branch when the error appears while printing, faxing, adding a printer, signing in through Remote Desktop, or redirecting a local printer into a remote session.

First, test whether Remote Desktop redirection is involved

1. Close the Remote Desktop session.
2. Open Remote Desktop Connection.
3. Select Show Options.
4. Open the Local Resources tab.
5. Under Local devices and resources, clear Printers.
6. Connect again.

If the error disappears, the problem is likely in the redirected printer-driver chain rather than a general Windows startup component. This test does not repair the driver, but it confirms which subsystem is triggering the load.

Update the printer from Windows Settings

1. Open Settings.
2. Select Bluetooth & devices in Windows 11, or Devices in Windows 10.
3. Open Printers & scanners.
4. Select the affected printer.
5. Select Printer properties or Manage.
6. Open the Advanced tab.
7. Note the driver name and provider.
8. Select the Driver tab if available and choose Update Driver.

If Windows cannot find a suitable update, use the printer manufacturer’s current driver supplied through Windows Update or the manufacturer’s official support channel. Match the driver to the exact Windows architecture and printer model.

Remove and reinstall a damaged printer

Before removing a printer, make sure you have the correct driver source available.

1. Open Settings.
2. Go to Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
3. Select the affected printer.
4. Select Remove.
5. Confirm the removal.
6. Restart Windows.
7. Return to Printers & scanners.
8. Select Add device.
9. Add the printer again.
10. Print a test page.

For a deeper cleanup, open Control Panel:

1. Press Windows key + R.
2. Enter:

1. Press Enter.
2. Select an empty area of the window.
3. Select Print server properties from the toolbar or menu.
4. Open the Drivers tab.
5. Select the stale driver package.
6. Choose Remove.
7. Select the option to remove the driver and driver package if Windows offers it.
8. Restart and install the correct driver.

Do not remove a driver package that another working printer still needs without checking its installed printers first.

When many devices and driver versions are installed, identifying the stale package manually can take time. Fix 4: Check Windows Fax and Scan

If the error happens only when using fax functions or Windows Fax and Scan, the feature may be absent or incompletely installed.

Microsoft identifies Windows Fax and Scan as a Feature on Demand. Its capability name is:

Print.Fax.Scan~~~~0.0.1.0

Add the feature through Settings

1. Open Settings.
2. In Windows 11, select System → Optional features.
3. Select View features.
4. Search for Windows Fax and Scan.
5. Select it.
6. Select Next.
7. Select Install.
8. Restart if Windows requests it.
9. Test the fax or scan operation again.

The wording and availability can differ by Windows edition and version. If the feature is not listed, use the command method or continue with the printer-driver branch.

Add the capability with DISM

1. Open Command Prompt as administrator.
2. Run:

DISM /Online /Add-Capability /CapabilityName:Print.Fax.Scan~~~~0.0.1.0

1. Wait for the operation to complete.
2. Restart Windows.
3. Test Windows Fax and Scan.

Reinstalling this feature may not restore every printer-driver copy of FXSTIFF.dll. If the error path points to spoolDRIVERS, repair the relevant printer or fax driver as well.

Fix 5: Check Windows Security quarantine

Antivirus software can quarantine a file after a detection or false positive. A missing DLL alone does not prove that antivirus software removed it, but Protection History can show whether that happened.

1. Open Start.
2. Search for Windows Security and open it.
3. Select Virus & threat protection.
4. Select Protection history.
5. Review recent entries.
6. Expand any item involving FXSTIFF.dll.
7. Check the original path, detection name, and action taken.

Only restore a quarantined file after confirming that:

• It came from a normal Windows or printer-driver location
• Its Microsoft signature is valid
• The detection is not credible
• The file has not been downloaded from an untrusted source

Run a current full security scan if the file appeared in an unexpected folder, changed without a Windows or driver update, or was accompanied by other suspicious behavior.

Fix 6: Use Device Manager for printer-driver problems

Device Manager does not directly repair every spool-driver package, but it can identify and replace a device driver that is repeatedly loading incompatible files.

1. Press Windows key + X.
2. Select Device Manager.
3. Expand Printers, Print queues, and, where present, Imaging devices.
4. Locate the affected device.
5. Right-click it and select Update driver.
6. Select Search automatically for drivers.
7. Restart Windows.

If the issue began immediately after a driver update:

1. Right-click the device in Device Manager.
2. Select Properties.
3. Open the Driver tab.
4. Select Roll Back Driver if the button is available.
5. Restart and test.

If no rollback is available, use Uninstall device, restart, and reinstall the correct driver. Do not select an option to delete the driver package unless you are prepared to reinstall the device afterward.

Fix 7: Recover from a recent system change

If Windows Update, a driver installation, or another system change immediately preceded the error, recovery may be appropriate after the repair commands fail.

Uninstall a recent update

1. Open Settings.
2. Select Windows Update.
3. Select Update history.
4. Choose Uninstall updates.
5. Select the recent update associated with the change.
6. Select Uninstall.
7. Restart and test.

Some updates cannot be removed. Do not remove security updates casually; use this step when the timing and symptoms clearly point to a specific update.

Use System Restore

1. Press Windows key + R.
2. Enter:

1. Press Enter.
2. Select a restore point created before the problem began.
3. Select Next.
4. Review the affected programs and drivers.
5. Select Finish.
6. Allow Windows to restart.

If Windows cannot start normally, access Windows Recovery Environment through Settings → System → Recovery → Advanced startup, then choose Troubleshoot → Advanced options → System Restore. Available recovery options depend on the installation.

What not to do

Do not download a standalone DLL

Random DLL download sites can provide malware, the wrong Windows build, the wrong architecture, or an incomplete set of companion files. A copied file can also bypass Windows servicing and leave the original component damaged.

Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Optional Features, and the printer manufacturer’s official driver source instead. Do not copy the file into every System32 folder

On 64-bit Windows, System32 is associated with 64-bit system components, while SysWOW64 supports 32-bit compatibility components. The correct location may instead be inside System32spooldrivers. File size and a “latest version” label do not establish compatibility.

Do not run regsvr32 on it

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose repair command for ordinary Windows runtime or library files.Microsoft regsvr32 reference

Registering fxstiff.dll normally does not restore a missing component, repair a printer-driver package, or fix an entry-point mismatch.

Do not assume the owning application is a game or Office

The exact path and trigger matter more than the application named in a generic error message. fxstiff.dll primarily belongs to Windows fax and printing components. If a third-party program launches the error, determine which Windows or printer function it is calling before reinstalling unrelated software.

Architecture and version cautions

A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows may use compatibility components, while a 64-bit printer driver uses the native Windows component tree. ARM64 systems can also require architecture-specific packages. Do not choose a replacement based on a filename, file size, or version number alone.

Historical versions such as 6.1.7601.17514, 6.2.9200.16384, 10.0.10586.0, and 10.0.14393.0 belong to particular Windows builds. They are not universal choices for Windows 10 or Windows 11.

If SFC reports no problems but the error continues, inspect the path in the dialog. A clean SFC result does not prove that a third-party printer package is compatible. Check the printer driver, Remote Desktop printer redirection, Event Viewer, and the exact companion DLLs being loaded.

Is fxstiff.dll safe?
