Microsoft’s headline announcements came at the Xbox Games Showcase on June 9, 2024: three revised Xbox Series X|S configurations, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. This was not a new Xbox console generation. It was a broader hardware lineup and a major software showcase whose biggest releases have since arrived.
As of August 18, 2026, Black Ops 6 and Flight Simulator 2024 are released games. Microsoft is still updating the flight simulator, including Sim Update 6, version 1.8.14.0, listed as released on August 13, 2026.

The hardware portion of the showcase was best understood as a lineup expansion. Microsoft offered different combinations of performance, storage, and physical-media support while keeping the Series X|S generation’s underlying platform intact.

| Model | Storage | Disc drive | Historical announced price | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series S | 1TB | No | $349.99 | Budget-conscious digital players |
| Xbox Series X Digital | 1TB | No | $449.99 | Players wanting Series X performance without discs |
| Xbox Series X special edition | 2TB | Yes | $599.99 | Large digital libraries and physical-media users |
The 1TB Series S addressed the standard model’s limited storage while remaining the least expensive option announced. It is still the lower-performance console: a sensible choice for digital gaming and Game Pass, but less appropriate for buyers who prioritize the highest console resolution and performance.
The 1TB digital Series X provided the more powerful Series X platform without a disc drive. That makes it attractive to players who buy downloads or use subscriptions, but it removes the ability to play physical game discs, watch Blu-ray discs, or take advantage of used physical games.
The 2TB special-edition Series X offered the largest internal drive, a disc drive, and a distinctive black design. Extra storage is useful for large modern games and simulator content, but it does not by itself make games run faster. Limited-edition stock and resale pricing can also differ substantially from the original announcement price.

Microsoft described the models as offering the same core speed and performance with additional storage, design, and pricing choices. They should therefore not be confused with a mid-generation performance upgrade or a successor to the Series X|S generation. See Microsoft’s official console hub for current product information.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 6
Black Ops 6 was the showcase’s largest software announcement. Microsoft and Activision dated it for October 25, 2024, and positioned it as a spy-action thriller set in the early 1990s, during the first Gulf War.

Campaign and movement
The campaign follows a conspiracy involving an alleged force inside the U.S. government. The central gameplay feature highlighted at the showcase was Omnimovement, which allows players to sprint, slide, and dive in multiple directions rather than restricting those actions to a forward-facing movement model.
The system was intended to make combat more fluid and give players greater control during escapes, firefights, and repositioning. It was a gameplay change, not an Xbox hardware feature.

Xbox also highlighted the return of Classic Prestige, which lets players reset progression in exchange for prestige rewards, and Theater Mode for reviewing and sharing gameplay. Round-based Zombies returned as well, preserving one of the series’ most recognizable multiplayer formats.
Platforms and Game Pass
Black Ops 6 was announced for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and PC. It was not an Xbox exclusive. The game’s multiplatform release meant that Xbox’s strategic advantage was ecosystem access, cross-device play, and subscription availability—not exclusive access to Call of Duty.
Microsoft announced day-one availability through selected Game Pass plans at launch. That arrangement should not be treated as a permanent description of the service: Game Pass plan names, prices, benefits, and eligibility can change. Check the current Game Pass page before subscribing.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 launched on November 19, 2024. Its most important change was a more structured, career-oriented experience rather than a simulator focused primarily on open-ended free flight.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- Airline operations
- Cargo transportation
- Search-and-rescue missions
- Aerial firefighting
- Air racing
That structure gives players goals beyond selecting an aircraft and flying from one airport to another. It also makes the game more accessible to people who want a sense of progression, while retaining the depth expected by simulation fans.
What the AI and cloud references mean
Microsoft associated the game with Azure AI and discussed its use of cloud and satellite techniques to support the world simulation. However, the announcement did not provide a complete technical architecture. It is more accurate to say that Microsoft referenced Azure AI and cloud-delivered world data than to claim that every specific visual or simulation feature is definitively “AI-powered.”
The game was developed with Asobo Studio and is substantially more specialized and technically demanding than a typical action game. Buyers should check their platform, available storage, internet connection, and preferred control method before choosing it.

Current status in 2026
Flight Simulator 2024 is no longer an upcoming announcement. Microsoft’s official Flight Simulator site lists continuing aircraft, marketplace, and update activity, including Sim Update 6, version 1.8.14.0, released August 13, 2026. Microsoft reported the update as available across supported platforms on August 14, alongside further content releases.
PC users should also be aware of community modifications. The August 2026 release information warns that outdated community packages can contribute to performance or loading problems. If an update causes those symptoms, Microsoft recommends moving outdated packages elsewhere temporarily and testing the simulator without them.
Do not confuse the 2024 edition with the original Microsoft Flight Simulator released in 2020. Both are separate products with separate update histories.
What happened after the showcase?
- June 9, 2024: Microsoft announced the three Series X|S configurations, revealed Black Ops 6, and dated Flight Simulator 2024.
- October 25, 2024: Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 launched on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC.
- November 19, 2024: Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 launched.
- August 13, 2026: Microsoft listed Flight Simulator 2024 Sim Update 6, version 1.8.14.0.
- August 14, 2026: Microsoft reported Sim Update 6 availability on supported platforms and continued aircraft and marketplace updates.
The distinction matters because the original showcase language described future plans. In 2026, the relevant question is not whether these games are coming, but how their released versions fit a buyer’s platform, budget, and tolerance for subscriptions or ongoing updates.

Which Xbox model makes sense?
Choose the 1TB Series S if:
- You want the lowest-cost entry among the announced models.
- You buy games digitally or use subscriptions.
- You do not require the highest Series X performance.
Its limitations are equally important: no disc drive, lower performance than Series X, and storage that can still fill quickly with large games. Serious Flight Simulator 2024 users should consider those constraints, along with internet and peripheral requirements.
Best Value
Choose the digital Series X if:
- You want the higher-performance Xbox platform.
- You are comfortable with an all-digital library.
- You expect to play demanding games such as Black Ops 6 and Flight Simulator 2024.
You pay more than for the Series S but lose physical-media flexibility.
Choose the 2TB Series X if:
- You want the most internal storage among the announced models.
- You maintain a large digital library.
- You want both Series X performance and a disc drive.
It carried the highest historical announcement price, and its limited-edition status means current availability and pricing require separate verification.
Xbox, PlayStation, PC, or Game Pass?
If Black Ops 6 is the main reason to buy, Xbox is not the only route. The game launched on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. A PlayStation or PC may therefore be the better choice if that is where your friends, library, or preferred controls already are.
Xbox becomes more compelling when you want a console ecosystem, access to Game Pass, cross-device play, or both games in one platform. A subscription can make sense for someone who intends to play several included games. Buying individually is simpler for someone who mainly wants one title, plays occasionally, or wants permanent ownership.
For Flight Simulator 2024, the decision is more specialized. A controller is sufficient for casual flying, while dedicated users may prefer a yoke, throttle quadrant, rudder pedals, or HOTAS setup. Compatibility and current accessory prices vary, so verify them for the specific platform before buying. The official game hub is the best starting point for current update and platform information.
What the announcement really represented
The June 2024 showcase combined three parts of Microsoft’s strategy: more choice within the existing console generation, a major Activision franchise release available across platforms, and a first-party simulator designed to support long-term content and progression.
Its hardware message was evolutionary rather than generational. Its Call of Duty message was about reach and subscription value rather than exclusivity. Its Flight Simulator message was about turning a technically demanding simulator into a broader career experience that Microsoft continues to maintain in 2026.
