The deal may make future catalog releases possible; it is not an announcement of a remaster, re-release, sequel, or revival.
Has Microsoft confirmed a classic shooter revival?
No. The official announcements establish that Microsoft acquired Activision Blizzard and intends to bring games from its franchises to Game Pass and other platforms. They do not name a classic shooter that is approved to return, or provide a release date or format. The headline’s “paves the way” is best understood as possibility, not confirmation.
That distinction matters: owning a catalog is not the same as announcing a specific release. Without a named game and a formal release plan, there is no substantiated list of classic shooters to treat as returning.
What the acquisition and streaming-rights deal actually mean
Microsoft completed its acquisition on October 13, 2023. In its closing announcement, Xbox said it would begin bringing Activision, Blizzard, and King franchises to Game Pass and other platforms. The statement set a broad direction, not a schedule for older games.

A separate part of the deal affects cloud streaming. Under the restructured proposal, Microsoft transferred to Ubisoft cloud streaming rights for current and future Activision Blizzard PC and console games released during the following 15 years. Microsoft described the rights as perpetual. It also said it could not exclusively control the licensing terms for competing cloud services. The Microsoft announcement of the restructured transaction explains the arrangement.
Ubisoft’s account clarifies that its streaming rights cover games already being distributed as well as games Activision Blizzard releases during that 15-year period, including downloadable content. Ubisoft said it could bring games such as Call of Duty to Ubisoft+ and license streaming access to cloud gaming companies, service providers, and console makers. That describes a route to cloud distribution, not a promise that a particular older shooter will be available. See the Ubisoft News interview with SVP Chris Early.

Why cloud access depends on region and provider
Cloud streaming rights are not a uniform worldwide arrangement. In the European Economic Area (EEA), Microsoft has separate regulatory commitments. Xbox says eligible EEA consumers who hold a license for a game can stream it through a cloud service of their choice, subject to the service enabling that game. At the October 2023 close, Microsoft named NVIDIA GeForce NOW, Ubitus, Boosteroid, and Nware as providers with agreements. The Xbox EEA cloud-streaming FAQ sets out the terms.
The EEA commitments run for ten years from the acquisition’s October 13, 2023 close. A consumer or provider license taken under the commitment by October 13, 2033 becomes perpetual, according to the FAQ. Eligibility and provider participation still matter; the commitment does not mean every eligible game appears on every service automatically.

- Seventh installment of the Call of Duty series, based on the live fire conflicts of the Cold War era.
- Diverse variety of play setting ranging from urban air and ground combat in SE Asia, to snow combat in Soviet region and jungle combat.
- Blending of traditional COD, and new first-person character scenarios designed to both retain the essence of the COD gaming experience
- New arsenal of weapons and vehicles tied to the Cold War era, including the SR-71 Blackbird and sited explosive-tipped crossbows.
- Wide array of play modes including single player, local multiplayer versus and online co-op and multiplayer
Outside the EEA, do not assume the same consumer licensing terms apply. The Ubisoft arrangement, existing agreements, and local service catalogs may all be relevant, but availability for a given title depends on the applicable region, license, provider, and game-specific decision.
What has reached Game Pass or cloud services so far?
Microsoft’s October 2024 one-year update named several Activision Blizzard games reaching Game Pass or cloud services. Examples included Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Modern Warfare III, Warzone, Diablo IV, Overwatch 2, Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, and StarCraft releases. These examples show catalog distribution activity; they do not establish that an unnamed classic shooter is getting a revival. The examples and timing are in Microsoft’s one-year update.

- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
There is also relevant history, but it is not a forecast. The UK Competition and Markets Authority’s April 2023 final report recorded Activision’s past cloud availability, including Call of Duty and back-catalog releases, and noted that those games were removed from GeForce NOW for commercial reasons. That history illustrates how service availability can change; it does not confirm future access or a new release.

A catalog announcement can mean different things to players. When Microsoft, Activision, or a platform holder names a specific older shooter, check what kind of return is actually being announced:
Best Value
- Refined. Recharged. Reloaded.
- True Next Gen - Experience GoldenEye on the next gen platform with stunning visuals, fast frenetic action, covert stealth gameplay and unforgettable characters.
- Upgraded Multiplayer - Replay the multiplayer game that defined a generation but, now, with all new enhancements:
- Customize your gameplay with more modifiers and weapon loadouts than ever before in BOTH the single AND multi-player campaigns. Play with standard controllers, Playstation Move, the Playstation Sharp Shooter, or the Top Shot Elite. You decide
- Personalize and enhance your gameplay with more modifiers and weapon loadouts than ever before in both single- and multiplayer campaigns
- New release or re-release: Look for the named game, supported platforms, release date, and whether it is a new edition or the original game made available again.
- Subscription catalog: Check the service’s current listing and the relevant region. A Game Pass or other catalog listing is not the same as permanent ownership.
- Cloud streaming: Confirm the provider supports the title where you live and whether you need an eligible license, subscription, or both.
- Remaster, sequel, or revival: Treat these as separate projects. Portfolio ownership or streaming rights do not establish that development or a launch has been announced.
Until an official source identifies a particular classic shooter and what is happening to it, claims that the deal has brought that game back go beyond what the announcements establish.
