Microsoft announced an expanded Xbox repairability program on January 15, 2025, and expanded U.S. in-person service began January 20, 2025. Depending on your model, fault, warranty, location, and budget, you may be offered mail-in service, an authorized local repair, genuine replacement parts for self-repair, or a replacement or exchange.
The safest first step is to register the Xbox at Microsoft’s device-service page, select it, and choose Start order. The result may be a repair of your original console—or a replacement—so check the service terms and displayed price before approving anything.

What changed in Microsoft’s Xbox repair program?
Microsoft’s January 2025 announcement expanded the repair options already available to Xbox owners. The program combines several routes rather than creating a single nationwide repair counter:

- Authorized in-person service at participating U.S. providers.
- Genuine replacement components sold through the Microsoft Store.
- Microsoft service documentation and parts supplied through iFixit’s Microsoft Repair Hub.
At launch, Microsoft identified uBreakiFix by Asurion as its first Xbox Authorized Service Provider, with nearly 700 participating U.S. locations. Participation, model coverage, appointment availability, and the type of work offered can vary by store, so do not assume that every uBreakiFix location accepts every Xbox.

The January announcement specifically named these Series X|S variants for the expanded in-person program:
- Xbox Series S – 1TB in Robot White.
- Xbox Series X – 1TB Digital Edition in Robot White.
- Xbox Series X – 2TB Galaxy Black Special Edition.
That list should not be confused with Microsoft’s broader online service-order categories.

Microsoft also says owners of another Xbox accessory can register or select an Xbox device and choose the accessory category during the service-order process. This is documented eligibility, not a guarantee that every device, fault, region, or warranty situation will receive service. The account page shows what Microsoft can offer for your particular product.
How to start a Microsoft Xbox repair order
- Open account.microsoft.com/devices.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account associated with the Xbox.
- Register the console or accessory if it is not already listed.
- Select the affected device.
- Choose Start order.
- Select the problem or service category shown for that device.
- Describe the fault clearly—for example, whether the console will not power on, shuts down, overheats, fails to read discs, or has intermittent video.
- Review the offered service method, price, warranty treatment, and shipping instructions.
- Follow Microsoft’s packing and shipping directions, then track the order through your device-service account.
Microsoft says the Xbox must be registered before you start an order. Labels and available options can change, so follow the wording displayed in your account rather than relying on an old screenshot or guide.
Will Microsoft repair your original Xbox?
Not necessarily. Depending on the device and market, Microsoft may offer same-unit repair, replacement, or exchange. Same-unit repair availability varies, and a service order does not promise that the same physical console will come back.
Microsoft says serviced devices may be tested, cleaned, and repaired with genuine Microsoft parts. However, the final remedy can depend on the fault, warranty status, parts availability, inventory, and location. Do not assume that a replacement will have the same serial number, cosmetic condition, color, storage capacity, or special-edition finish.

Before sending a limited-edition console, ask Microsoft or the authorized provider whether the original edition will be preserved. Photograph the serial number and exterior condition beforehand.
Mail-in service versus authorized in-person repair

For in-person service, contact the specific store before traveling and ask:
- Does it accept your exact Xbox model and revision?
- Does it handle your particular fault?
- Is an appointment required?
- Is the work covered by warranty?
- Is there an inspection or diagnostic fee?
- Will the original unit be repaired, or could it be exchanged?
- What warranty applies to the completed work?
In-person does not mean same-day. It only means the service is handled locally rather than through Microsoft’s ordinary mail-in process.
How long does Xbox repair take?
Microsoft says that, in most cases, customers receive a shipment notification within 6 to 8 business days after Microsoft receives the device. That is not a guaranteed end-to-end turnaround. Packing, transit, intake, diagnosis, repair or replacement, and return shipping can add time.

Keep the service-order number, carrier tracking number, shipment date, receipt-confirmation date, and any estimated completion date. These records are useful if the status stops moving or the warranty information later appears incorrect.
Can you repair an Xbox yourself?
Yes, but Microsoft positions self-repair as an out-of-warranty option for skilled technicians—not as a simple fix for every owner or every failure.
Microsoft’s parts program includes selected components for Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Xbox Wireless Controllers, Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2, and other selected Xbox hardware. Examples include enclosures, feet, button boards, thermal paste, and controller input boards. The catalog is not a complete parts list for every Xbox generation.

- Correct identification of the model and hardware revision.
- Safe console disassembly and reassembly.
- ESD precautions.
- Precision Torx or other appropriate tools.
- Careful handling of connectors and cables.
- Thermal-material replacement where applicable.
- Functional testing after reassembly.
The hardest part is often diagnosis, not replacing the component. A new enclosure will not fix a failing motherboard, and replacing an input board will not necessarily solve every instance of stick drift. If you cannot confidently identify the failed part, Microsoft service or a qualified technician is the lower-risk option.
Warranty and opening the console
Do not treat “opening the Xbox voids the warranty” as a universal rule. Warranty eligibility depends on the applicable U.S. terms, product, coverage, damage, modification, and circumstances. Microsoft’s warranty information should be checked before opening a covered device.
Microsoft describes its self-repair parts and guides as intended for out-of-warranty repair by skilled technicians. If the console may still be covered, start with Microsoft’s warranty and service process. Damage caused by misuse, liquid, unauthorized modification, or accidental damage may be treated differently from a covered hardware defect.
Also distinguish the standard limited hardware warranty from Microsoft Complete or another protection plan. Protection plans are available only in selected markets, have their own exclusions and terms, and generally cannot be bought retroactively to cover an already damaged Xbox.
What does Xbox repair cost?
There is no single published U.S. price table that applies to every Xbox model and fault. Microsoft normally displays the relevant service price after the device and service category have been identified. Check that amount before approving service.
Parts prices are separate from professional repair prices. A part’s cost does not necessarily include diagnosis, labor, tools, shipping, taxes, or the risk of installing the wrong component.

- Back up or synchronize saved data where possible.
- Remove discs.
- Do not send a controller, power cable, HDMI cable, or other accessory unless the order specifically requests it.
- Photograph the console, serial-number label, and existing cosmetic damage.
- Remove personal storage devices or accessories that Microsoft did not request.
- If the Xbox still works, sign out or review account and privacy implications before shipping.
- Use Microsoft’s specified packaging and carrier instructions.
- Keep the tracking number and proof of shipment.
Microsoft provides separate packing guidance for Xbox consoles, Kinect sensors, and accessories. Follow the instructions attached to your order rather than improvising packaging.
When is repair not worth it?
There is no universal repair-versus-replacement price threshold. Compare the actual Microsoft or shop quote with the current cost of a suitable replacement, while accounting for more than hardware alone:
- The console’s age and condition.
- Warranty status.
- Labor, shipping, diagnosis, and taxes.
- Whether the replacement is new, refurbished, or an exchange unit.
- The value of a special-edition finish or storage capacity.
- Physical discs, accessories, and saved data.
- Your confidence in completing a DIY repair safely.
A replacement foot, enclosure, button board, or controller component may be a sensible repair. A major board failure, liquid damage, optical-drive problem, multiple simultaneous symptoms, or an unavailable part may make professional repair or replacement more practical.
Trade-in and refurbished options may exist, but eligibility and value depend on condition and current offers. A broken Xbox should not be assumed to qualify for a worthwhile trade-in.
Which route should you choose?
- Still under warranty? Start with Microsoft before opening the device.
- Need a difficult fault diagnosed? Use Microsoft service or a qualified repair shop rather than guessing at parts.
- Near a participating authorized provider? Confirm the exact model, fault, price, and turnaround before visiting.
- Out of warranty with a clearly identified modular fault? Compare the Microsoft part price and your tool and labor costs with a service quote.
- High quote, severe damage, or multiple failures? Compare repair with a replacement or refurbished unit.
Microsoft’s expanded program makes repair more accessible, but it does not eliminate model limitations, diagnosis risk, or replacement uncertainty. The service-order page is the authoritative place to see what Microsoft will offer for your specific Xbox.
