Charge it, update the console and controller, reset the Joy-Con, pair it again, and test it away from wireless interference. If one Joy-Con still fails on more than one console, service or replacement is more likely than another software fix.

The fastest comparison is a known-working Joy-Con on the same console. If the second controller works, the original Joy-Con is the stronger suspect. If several controllers fail, investigate the console and environment.
#1 Best Overall
- Introducing Joy-Con, controllers that make new kinds of gaming possible, for use with Nintendo Switch.
- The versatile Joy-Con offer multiple surprising new ways for players to have fun.
- Two Joy-Con can be used independently in each hand, or together as one game controller when attached to the Joy-Con grip.
- They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy two-player action in supported games.
- Each Joy-Con has a full set of buttons and can act as a standalone controller, and each includes an accelerometer and gyro-sensor, making independent left and right motion control possible.
Fix Joy-Con connection problems in order
1. Check the battery
- Open HOME Menu > Controllers.
- Check the approximate battery level shown for each paired controller.
For an original Switch or Switch OLED, attach the Joy-Con firmly and connect the console to power. Confirm that the controller is recognized and charging. A Joy-Con takes approximately 3.5 hours to charge fully and is rated for up to 20 hours of continuous use, although actual battery life varies. See Nintendo’s Joy-Con FAQ.
Original Joy-Con cannot charge by attaching to Switch 2. Use a compatible charging grip, charging stand, or original Switch hardware. Joy-Con 2 require Switch 2-compatible charging accessories.
2. Update the console and controllers
Install available updates before diagnosing hardware:
- Console:
HOME Menu > System Settings > System > System Update - Controllers:
HOME Menu > System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Update Controllers
Do not rely on a specific firmware number: Nintendo can change it. Nintendo’s controller troubleshooting guidance lists these update paths.
3. Reset the affected Joy-Con
- Detach the Joy-Con if it is attached.
- Press the small SYNC button once.
- Press another button, such as A, to wake it.
- Try pairing it again.
This is a reset, not a factory reset. It does not erase games or console data. Do not confuse it with pairing: pressing SYNC once resets or wakes the controller; holding it for at least one second on the pairing screen starts pairing.
See Nintendo’s instructions for a Joy-Con that will not pair and for repeated disconnections.
4. Restart the Switch
- Hold the console’s POWER button until the Power menu appears.
- Select Power Options.
- Select Restart.
You can use the touchscreen if the Joy-Con is not responding. Avoid a factory reset at this stage; it is disproportionate to a connection problem and does not repair interference or damaged hardware.

5. Disconnect every controller, then pair again
For the original Switch family:
- Open
HOME Menu > System Settings > Controllers and Sensors. - Select Disconnect Controllers.
- Hold X until the progress circle completes.
- Open
HOME Menu > Controllers > Change Grip/Order. - Hold the Joy-Con’s SYNC button for at least one second.
- Follow the on-screen button instructions for the desired orientation.
For Switch 2, open HOME Menu > Controllers > Change Grip and Order, then hold the original Joy-Con’s SYNC button for at least one second. The console must be awake; controllers cannot be paired while it is asleep. After successful pairing, the player-number LEDs should remain lit and the console should show the grip-orientation prompt. Nintendo supports pairing of up to eight wireless controllers, subject to controller type and features in use.
Official steps: Nintendo Joy-Con pairing instructions.
6. Remove possible wireless interference
Move the console into the open, especially if it is behind a television, inside metal shelving, or surrounded by a large cable bundle. Nintendo identifies these as possible interference sources:
- Wireless speakers, headsets, access points, laptops, tablets, and wireless printers
- Microwaves and cordless phones
- Aquariums and metal objects
- USB 3.0 devices, including external drives, flash drives, and LAN adapters
Keep likely sources roughly three to four feet from the console and controllers where possible. For a useful test, move the setup to an open table or another room for five minutes. If the connection becomes stable, the original placement or nearby equipment is more likely than a dead Joy-Con.

Nintendo’s wireless-response guidance lists these placement and interference checks.
7. Toggle Airplane Mode
For recurring wireless dropouts:
- Hold the HOME button on the right Joy-Con to open Quick Settings.
- Turn Airplane Mode on.
- Turn it off again.
- If necessary, open
System Settings > Airplane Modeand confirm Bluetooth is enabled. - Press a button on each Joy-Con to reconnect.
This is a temporary wireless reset, not a guaranteed repair.
8. Check the game and button mapping
A controller can be paired correctly but unavailable in a particular game because the game does not support the selected configuration, has reached its player limit, or does not support the Joy-Con orientation you are using. Check the game’s description on Nintendo’s website or Nintendo eShop.
If the controller connects but buttons behave incorrectly, put the console to sleep by pressing POWER once, then wake it with POWER or HOME. If the message Connected Controller’s Button Mapping Changed appears, choose Reset the Button Mapping. This is a configuration issue, not normally a wireless failure.

- They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy two-player action in supported games.
9. Inspect the rails and contacts
On an original Switch or Switch OLED, remove the Joy-Con and inspect the metal rail and visible contacts for dirt, damage, looseness, or obstruction. Reattach it until it clicks.
- Do not force the controller.
- Do not scrape contacts with metal tools.
- Do not spray liquid directly into the rail.
If the Joy-Con is recognized only when pressure is applied or when held at a particular angle, rail or connector wear is more likely. Inspection can help identify a problem, but cleaning is not a guaranteed cure.

Joy-Con will not pair wirelessly
Charge it, press SYNC once and another button, restart the console, then use Change Grip and Order while holding SYNC for at least one second. If it still fails, test another Joy-Con and move away from wireless devices.
Joy-Con keeps disconnecting
Test in an open room, remove nearby USB 3.0 devices and wireless equipment, update both devices, and toggle Airplane Mode. If it disconnects at a short distance on multiple consoles, suspect the controller’s battery, antenna, or internal hardware.
Joy-Con works wirelessly but not when attached
This points away from Bluetooth pairing and toward the rail, contacts, connector, or console-side rail. Inspect the connection and test another Joy-Con on the same rail. This test is not available on Switch Lite or for original Joy-Con used with Switch 2, because those combinations do not attach.
Joy-Con works attached but not wirelessly
Focus on battery charge, resetting, re-pairing, interference, and the controller’s wireless hardware. Another controller working wirelessly on the same console is strong evidence against a console-wide fault.
Joy-Con is not detected or will not charge while attached
On an original Switch or OLED, inspect the rail and contacts and test another controller. If neither controller is detected or charged on that side, the console-side rail or connector may be involved.
Both Joy-Con fail
Test both controllers on another compatible console if possible. Several known-good controllers failing on one console shifts suspicion toward the console, its software, its wireless hardware, or the environment.

Switch 2 controllers disconnect while docked
Confirm whether you are using original Joy-Con or Joy-Con 2. Original Joy-Con remain wireless-only on Switch 2. If the issue occurs while docked, verify that the dock uses the included Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. Nintendo specifically warns that the original Switch HDMI cable is not the correct cable for Switch 2 dock use. See Nintendo’s Switch 2 pairing guidance.
When to request repair or replace the Joy-Con
Request Nintendo service when the problem remains after charging, updating, resetting, re-pairing, interference testing, and comparison with another controller—especially when:
- One Joy-Con fails on multiple consoles.
- It will not charge or power on.
- It is not recognized either attached or wirelessly.
- There is liquid or impact damage.
- The console fails with several known-good controllers.
Use Nintendo’s service-request information to check current eligibility and cost. Nintendo’s U.S. and Canadian standard hardware warranty is stated as one year from purchase with proof of purchase; physical damage is excluded. Coverage and service terms vary by region and case.
Choose a replacement when the fault consistently follows one controller and service is impractical. Use Nintendo’s official controller store for original Joy-Con, or the official Joy-Con 2 page for Switch 2. Confirm compatibility before ordering.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDIY repair is an advanced option, not the next generic fix. iFixit documents repairs involving rails, ribbon cables, and internal components at its Joy-Con repair resource and parts catalog. Opening the controller can damage small cables or clips and may complicate warranty service. A charging grip or stand solves a charging-compatibility problem; it will not repair a defective wireless connection.
