Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallVerdict: The March 10, 2025 report was broadly right that Microsoft would release an Xbox-branded handheld with a PC-hardware partner before the year ended. The real products are the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X, made with ASUS and AMD and released worldwide on October 16, 2025, initially in 45 countries. They are Windows 11 gaming PCs with Xbox software integration—not portable Xbox Series consoles built entirely by Microsoft.
What the March 2025 report claimed
A March 10 report summarized by BGR, citing Windows Central, said Microsoft was working with an unnamed PC manufacturer on a handheld codenamed “Keenan.” The report claimed a release before the end of 2025, familiar Xbox design cues, a full version of Windows, and a user experience centered on the Microsoft Store and PC Game Pass. It also said users would be able to install Steam, Epic Games Launcher and other PC software, with Xbox Game Bar controls potentially covering settings such as power limits and fan speed.
The same report described a separate Microsoft-built Xbox handheld and a next-generation Xbox console as 2027 targets. That part was a reported roadmap claim, not a Microsoft announcement, and remains unconfirmed by the official launch material.
What Microsoft and ASUS actually announced
On June 8, 2025, Microsoft and ASUS announced two products: the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X. AMD supplies the processors, ASUS ROG builds the hardware, and Microsoft supplies the Xbox-oriented software and services. ASUS later confirmed October 16, 2025 as the on-sale date; Xbox said both models were available worldwide that day, beginning in 45 countries with additional markets to follow.

The launch therefore confirms the broad outline of the report while changing the details. “Keenan” was not the retail name, the partner was ASUS, and the public launch contained two models rather than one device. Microsoft calls them collaborative handhelds, not a new Xbox console family.

The Xbox identity comes from the software layer and controls rather than from console hardware. Both devices have Xbox-style grips, an Xbox button and access to Xbox Game Bar. Microsoft’s Xbox Full Screen Experience is designed for controller navigation on a small display, while Xbox accounts can bring supported libraries, progression, friends and achievements together.
- Native Windows 11 PC gaming.
- Access to the Xbox app, PC Game Pass titles and other leading PC storefronts, including Battle.net where supported.
- Xbox Cloud Gaming for supported games, subject to subscription, region, network quality and catalog availability.
- Xbox Remote Play, which streams games from the owner’s Xbox console over a network.
That combination is flexible, but it does not turn Windows into a closed console operating system. Different launchers, accounts, updates, drivers, permissions and game settings remain part of the experience.

How games run
Native PC play
Compatible games run locally under Windows 11. A console version alone is not enough: a title needs a Windows PC build, or another supported access route, to run natively.
Cloud play
Supported Game Pass games can be streamed through Xbox Cloud Gaming. Access depends on the user’s subscription tier, region, internet connection and Microsoft’s current cloud catalog; buying either handheld does not provide unlimited Game Pass access.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Remote Play
Remote Play streams a game installed on the user’s own Xbox console. It is distinct from both local Windows play and cloud gaming, and its quality depends on the network between the console and handheld.

Compatibility labels and their limits
Microsoft and ASUS use labels including Handheld Optimized and Mostly Compatible. Xbox says its teams worked with studios to test and optimize thousands of PC titles. These labels are guidance, not a guarantee of identical console-style performance or perfect behavior.
- Anti-cheat, DRM and launcher requirements can block or complicate play.
- Keyboard-and-mouse interfaces may be awkward on a seven-inch screen.
- Small text and dense menus can remain difficult to read.
- Frame rate, image quality and battery drain change with resolution, graphics settings, frame-rate targets and power mode.
- Windows updates and graphics drivers can introduce game-specific problems.
There is no universal battery-life figure for either model without specifying the game, power profile, brightness, frame-rate target and other test conditions.

Which model makes sense?
Choose the ROG Xbox Ally
- You want the lower entry price and official Xbox branding.
- Most of your games are lighter, older, cloud-streamed or played at moderate settings.
- 512GB is adequate, or you are comfortable using expandable storage or replacing the SSD.
- You want a general Windows handheld without paying for the highest-end configuration.
Choose the ROG Xbox Ally X
- You regularly play demanding PC games and value the stronger processor.
- 24GB of memory and 1TB of storage materially reduce compromises for your library.
- The larger 80Wh battery is a major priority.
- You accept a $999.99 U.S. ASUS listing price and a product aimed at premium handheld-PC buyers.
The Ally X’s NPU is a hardware feature, not evidence that every game runs faster. Its practical gaming advantage depends on the title, settings and power profile.
How they compare with Steam Deck and other Windows handhelds
Steam Deck uses SteamOS and offers a more focused Steam-library experience. It is a natural fit for readers whose games are primarily on Steam, but Xbox-first PC Game Pass use generally requires Windows or another workaround and is not as integrated.
Lenovo Legion Go is another Windows handheld-PC family. It can be relevant when screen, controls, price or raw hardware matter more than Xbox branding, but it does not provide the ROG Xbox Ally family’s Xbox Full Screen Experience.
Earlier ASUS ROG Ally models may cost less when discounted. Their older processors, batteries and software layers should be weighed against the actual price difference rather than assumed to be equivalent to the 2025 Xbox-branded models.
What these products are not
- They are not battery-powered Xbox Series X consoles.
- Owning an Xbox console does not automatically make every console game installable locally on Windows.
- They do not guarantee a closed, plug-and-play console experience.
- They do not include unlimited Game Pass access simply because the Xbox logo is on the hardware.
Xbox-console games may be available through a native PC version, Xbox Play Anywhere, cloud streaming or Remote Play. A console-only title without one of those routes cannot be installed locally just because it runs on Xbox consoles.
What happened to “Keenan” and the reported 2027 device?
“Keenan” appears to have been a reported internal codename or shorthand, not a retail product name. The confirmed 2025 hardware became the ASUS-built ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X. The March report’s separate claim about a Microsoft-built handheld targeted for 2027 should remain attributed and unconfirmed unless Microsoft publishes a later roadmap announcement.
