Microsoft’s answer to awkward Windows handheld gaming is not a new Xbox console. It is a controller-first Xbox Full Screen Experience built into ASUS’s ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X: two Windows 11 gaming PCs that boot straight into an Xbox-style interface while retaining the desktop, PC storefronts, mods and applications underneath.
That approach should make handhelds easier to start and navigate. It does not remove the complications that come with Windows gaming, including launchers, drivers, anti-cheat systems, DRM, battery limits and games that lack a native PC version.

What Microsoft revealed
Microsoft announced the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X on June 8, 2025, in partnership with ASUS and AMD. ASUS makes the hardware; Microsoft supplies the Xbox-oriented software experience and ecosystem integration.
Both devices run Windows 11 Home, but their default startup experience is different from a conventional Windows handheld. They boot into the Xbox Full Screen Experience, an interface designed for gamepad navigation and portable play.

The products launched globally on October 16, 2025, initially across 45 countries. Availability and retailer stock vary by region.
What the Xbox Full Screen Experience changes
The main problem Microsoft is targeting is not the absence of PC games. It is the awkward path between pressing the power button and actually playing one.
Traditional Windows handhelds can boot to a desktop filled with small controls that are difficult to operate with a controller. Players may also need to move between Steam, Xbox, Epic Games Store and other launchers, while Windows updates and background processes compete for system resources.

- Booting directly into a controller-navigable Xbox interface.
- Providing a dedicated Xbox button that opens an optimized Game Bar.
- Putting chat, applications, settings, capture tools and system controls within Game Bar.
- Offering a Command Center for quick settings and customization.
- Letting users switch between games and applications through a task-switching interface.
- Minimizing background activity and deferring non-essential tasks so more resources can be directed toward games.
Microsoft’s stated optimization is a design goal, not proof of a universal performance or battery-life increase. The available first-party information does not establish a fixed frame-rate improvement, a guaranteed memory saving or a specific battery gain across all games.
It does not replace Windows
The Xbox interface is a shell over Windows, not a replacement for Windows. Players can still use desktop applications, browsers, File Explorer, mods, emulators, unsupported games and standard Windows settings.
To reach the desktop, ASUS documents this path:
- Open the Task Switcher by swiping up from the bottom of the screen.
- Select Windows Desktop.
- Use the Windows taskbar, Start menu, File Explorer or other desktop tools.
To return, open the Xbox app and select Xbox Full Screen. ASUS notes that restarting may be necessary to return with the full background-process optimizations enabled. That is a useful reminder that this is more flexible than a console, but less seamless.

Desktop mode remains important for installing mods, editing files, troubleshooting launchers, changing advanced settings and running games that do not behave properly through the handheld interface.
Does it combine Steam and other PC games?
It provides a more unified way to find and launch supported games and applications from Xbox and other PC storefronts. That does not unify ownership or eliminate the underlying services.
- A game purchased on Steam remains tied to Steam.
- Another store may still require its own launcher, account, DRM and cloud-save system.
- Some games may require desktop interaction for sign-in, updates or configuration.
- Controller support and handheld-friendly menus still vary from game to game.
In other words, the interface can make a fragmented PC library easier to access without turning that library into a single Xbox-style platform.

Both models have Xbox-style contoured grips, a dedicated Xbox button and Command Center controls. The Ally X’s stronger listed processor, 24GB of memory and 1TB drive give it a more generous specification, but those numbers do not guarantee a particular frame rate. Actual results depend on the game, resolution, power mode, drivers and thermal conditions.

The price difference is substantial: based on the observed ASUS U.S. prices, the Ally X costs $400 more. That makes it a performance-and-capacity purchase rather than an automatic choice for everyone.
Xbox services: native games, cloud gaming and Remote Play
The devices can access Xbox features including achievements, friends, progression, Xbox Play Anywhere where applicable, cloud gaming and Remote Play.
However, “available through Xbox” does not always mean “runs natively on the handheld.” A game must have a supported Windows PC version for native installation. Otherwise, the relevant option may be:

- Xbox Cloud Gaming: the game is streamed from Microsoft’s servers, subject to service, membership and network requirements.
- Xbox Remote Play: a game installed on the user’s Xbox console is streamed to the handheld.
- Native PC play: the Windows version is installed locally and still follows its own PC requirements and compatibility rules.
ASUS specifically describes Remote Play for games installed on an Xbox console, including Game Pass titles. An eligible Game Pass plan may be required for cloud gaming or online multiplayer, and a subscription does not turn every Xbox console game into a native Windows game.

Likely improved
- The first-boot experience is closer to a console than a desktop PC.
- Common controls are easier to reach with a gamepad.
- Xbox features and system controls are more visible.
- Players can find supported games from multiple PC storefronts without starting at the Windows desktop.
- Reduced background activity may give games a cleaner resource environment.
Still unresolved
- Launchers may still open for authentication, updates, DRM or cloud saves.
- Drivers, Windows updates and anti-cheat systems can still cause problems.
- Not every game is designed for a small screen or controller.
- Battery capacity, thermals and game optimization are hardware and software issues, not merely interface problems.
- Mods, file management and unsupported titles may still require desktop mode.
- Switching back from Windows is not always as immediate as returning to a console dashboard.
The most accurate verdict is that Microsoft is addressing Windows handheld usability. It has not demonstrated that the Xbox interface eliminates the broader technical compromises of PC gaming on portable hardware.
Which model makes sense?
Choose the ROG Xbox Ally if:
- You want the lowest-cost entry to this Xbox-branded handheld experience.
- You want Windows flexibility and access to multiple PC storefronts.
- You value a console-like startup flow but do not need the Ally X’s higher specification.
- Your games do not require the extra memory, storage or processing headroom.
Choose the ROG Xbox Ally X if:
- You regularly play demanding PC games.
- You want the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme platform, 24GB of RAM and 1TB of storage.
- You are comfortable paying a $400 premium over the observed U.S. price of the Ally.
- You want more capacity and performance headroom, while accepting that performance varies by title.
Existing ROG Ally owners should be more cautious. If the main complaint is navigating Windows, the new software experience may be attractive. If the goal is simply higher performance, an upgrade should be judged against the price and independent testing rather than the Xbox branding alone.
Steam-focused players may prefer a handheld built around a Steam-centered interface. Someone who mainly wants portable access to an existing Xbox console library may get better value from a traditional Xbox plus Remote Play. Buyers who need sustained performance, a large display and comfortable multitasking may still be better served by a gaming laptop.
