Microsoft began rolling out the feature on April 30, 2026, to Windows 11 laptops, desktops, tablets, and gaming handhelds in select markets. It is a controller-friendly, full-screen gaming launcher—not a replacement for Windows or an Xbox console operating system.
What is Xbox mode?
Xbox mode is Microsoft’s console-inspired gaming interface for Windows 11. Previously called the Xbox full-screen experience or simply the full-screen experience, it puts a gaming home screen in front of the normal Windows desktop.

The interface is designed primarily for controller navigation. It can surface recently played games, your library, Game Pass content, and installed games from participating PC storefronts. You can enter the mode when you want a simpler, TV-friendly or handheld-friendly experience, then return to the Windows desktop when you need conventional apps and multitasking.

Which Windows 11 devices get it?
Microsoft has named these PC form factors:
- Gaming desktops
- Gaming laptops
- Windows tablets
- Windows gaming handhelds
The rollout is gradual and market-dependent. A Windows 11 PC may be supported in principle but still lack the feature because Microsoft has not enabled it for that device, market, or software configuration yet. The April announcement described an expansion beginning in select markets; there is no basis for assuming universal worldwide availability as of September 2026.
What Xbox mode can do
- Provide controller-first navigation: Browse and launch games without relying on a mouse and desktop icons.
- Aggregate games: The Xbox PC app can show Game Pass titles and installed games from other leading PC storefronts.
- Connect to Game Pass: Subscribers can browse eligible catalog content, download PC games, and use supported cloud-gaming features.
- Keep Windows available: You can switch back to the desktop rather than being locked into a console-style shell.
- Switch between active software: Task View and Game Bar provide routes back to open games and apps.
Aggregation is not the same as replacing other launchers. A game listed in the Xbox interface may still require Steam, Epic Games Store, Battle.net, another client, or a separate account when it launches.
What Xbox mode does not do
- It does not turn a Windows PC into Xbox console hardware.
- It does not make every Xbox console game playable natively on PC.
- It does not give you ownership of games you have not bought or accessed through a subscription.
- It does not remove the need for third-party storefronts, launchers, accounts, or game-specific requirements.
- It does not guarantee higher frame rates on every laptop or desktop.
Xbox console games remain subject to their PC versions, supported cloud-gaming options, remote-play routes, or other compatibility arrangements. Xbox mode changes how you access Windows games; it does not change what hardware or software those games require.

Does Xbox mode improve gaming performance?
Do not treat Xbox mode as a universal performance upgrade. It cannot add GPU power, CPU capacity, memory, storage speed, or display capability to a PC.
Microsoft’s documented performance-related behavior is specifically relevant to handhelds that enter Xbox mode at startup. Windows may limit background processes in that configuration to improve the gaming experience. Microsoft does not make the same blanket frame-rate promise for conventional desktops and laptops. On those systems, the primary benefit is navigation and presentation.
Actual performance still depends on the game, graphics drivers, PC hardware, Windows settings, thermals, and the behavior of any launcher or anti-cheat software involved.

Requirements and availability
Xbox mode requires:
- Windows 11 version 24H2 or later
- A supported market
- Current Windows updates
- The relevant Xbox PC app updates
Do not confuse the mode requirement with the Xbox PC app’s general compatibility floor. The Xbox app page lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 version 22H2 or later, 150 MB of storage, and a 720p display. Those are app requirements; the Xbox mode support page requires Windows 11 24H2 or newer. See Microsoft’s Xbox mode support documentation for the current labels and conditions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA controller is recommended for the intended experience, but an Xbox-branded controller is not presented as mandatory. Depending on the device and configuration, Xbox mode can also be reached through the keyboard, mouse, touch controls, Game Bar, or Task View.
How to enable Xbox mode on a Windows 11 PC
- Open Start > Settings > Gaming > Xbox mode.
- Turn on Enable Xbox mode.
- Optionally enable Show Xbox mode in Task View.
- Press
Win + F11to enter or leave Xbox mode.
You can also press Win + G to open Game Bar and use its Xbox mode controls, or press Win + Tab to access it through Task View.
Microsoft may adjust menu names as Windows evolves, so the support page is the best reference if the labels on your system differ.
How handheld behavior differs
Handhelds get a more dedicated configuration. Open Start > Settings > Gaming > Xbox mode, then select a supported gaming home app under Choose home app. You can optionally turn on Enter Xbox mode on startup.
When a handheld enters the mode at startup, Windows may apply the background-process optimizations described above. Returning to the desktop can involve a restart so Windows can apply or remove those handheld-oriented settings.

On a laptop or desktop, Xbox mode is better understood as an on-demand full-screen gaming layer. Microsoft’s documentation does not establish that every traditional PC will boot directly into it.
What happens to non-game apps?
Xbox mode is more than a wallpaper or launcher shortcut. Microsoft documents a deliberately constrained full-screen layout:
- Only one window is displayed at a time.
- Some multi-window applications may show only their most recent window.
- Apps that do not support full-screen behavior may appear against a black background.
- Some conventional desktop keyboard shortcuts are disabled while the mode is active.
That makes the feature useful from a sofa or on a handheld, but less suitable as a permanent replacement for the Windows desktop when you are working or multitasking.

Microsoft’s promise is an aggregated library that can include installed games from leading PC storefronts. This is useful for people with games spread across multiple services, but it should not be interpreted as a guarantee that every launcher and every game will integrate identically.
There are four separate questions:
- Can the game be detected? The storefront or installation may need to be recognized by the Xbox app.
- Can it be launched? The relevant client may still open in the background or require an account login.
- Do you own it? Xbox mode does not grant licenses from Steam, Epic, Battle.net, GOG, or other stores.
- Does it behave like a console game? Controller support, cloud saves, overlays, anti-cheat, and suspend behavior can vary by title and launcher.
For a library that is overwhelmingly Steam-based, Steam Big Picture Mode may remain the more consistent choice. Playnite is another third-party option for users who want deeper multi-store customization. These tools are alternatives with different integration and configuration trade-offs, not identical versions of Xbox mode.

A Game Pass subscription matters when you want its catalog, eligible downloads, or supported cloud gaming. It is not a prerequisite merely to enable Xbox mode. Microsoft’s Xbox PC app page explains the app’s Game Pass and storefront features.
Xbox mode missing? Try this checklist
- Check the Windows version under Settings > System > About. Xbox mode requires Windows 11 24H2 or later.
- Open Settings > Windows Update and install available updates.
- Enable Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available, which Microsoft recommended during the rollout.
- Update the Xbox PC app through the Microsoft Store. If necessary, reinstall it.
- Restart the PC.
- Confirm that Xbox mode is supported in your market.
If the setting still does not appear, the most likely explanations are staged rollout timing, an unsupported region, an outdated Windows build, or an app-update issue. Avoid relying on unofficial registry edits or ViveTool commands on a production PC; those are unsupported workarounds and are not required for the official setup.
Also check whether Windows is running in S mode. Microsoft notes that using the Xbox PC app may require switching out of S mode, which can affect how software can be installed.
Who should use Xbox mode?
Xbox mode is most valuable for:
- Handheld owners who want less desktop interaction
- Living-room and TV-connected PC users
- Game Pass subscribers
- Players with libraries spread across several PC storefronts
- People who regularly switch between work and gaming on the same Windows device
It may add little for a mouse-and-keyboard desktop user who already prefers Steam, Epic, Battle.net, or another launcher. It is also a poor fit for anyone expecting console-style suspend/resume, universal Xbox-console compatibility, or guaranteed performance gains.
The bottom line
Microsoft is genuinely bringing its Xbox-style full-screen gaming experience to Windows 11 laptops, desktops, tablets, and handhelds. The rollout began on April 30, 2026, but availability remains dependent on supported markets, staged delivery, Windows 11 24H2 or later, and current app updates.
The feature’s real value is convenience: controller-first navigation, a more unified game library, and a quick path between gaming and the Windows desktop. It is particularly compelling on handhelds and living-room PCs. For conventional desktop users, it is a useful optional shell—not a hardware upgrade, an Xbox console replacement, or a guarantee that every PC game will launch without its original storefront.
