The trade-off is that stage pacing, control friction and uneven reactions to enemy behavior can keep the action from working for everyone. Critics have been generally favorable, but their reviews point to a game whose combat is more consistently praised than its overall flow.
What kind of game is Midnight Fight Express?
Midnight Fight Express is a single-player, 3D isometric beat ’em up developed by Jacob Dzwinel and published by Balor Games. It released on August 23, 2022. You play Babyface, a former underworld member pulled into a race to stop a citywide criminal takeover before sunrise, with an AI drone alongside you. It is a solo game, not a co-op brawler. Steam describes 41 handcrafted levels and a combat toolkit that includes melee and ranged weapons, environmental takedowns, a skill tree, cosmetic unlocks and replayable mission challenges. The listing also says players can customize enemy types and weapons. The game contains violence, blood and gore.
What do reviews say about Midnight Fight Express?
On Metacritic, the all-platform critic aggregate was 76/100 from 35 critic reviews, labeled “Generally Favorable” on the page accessed in 2026. Those reviews were divided into 24 positive, 10 mixed and one negative. Metacritic’s user score was 7.4/10 from 92 user ratings, labeled “Mixed or Average” on that same 2026 access. Steam showed 90% positive from 2,000 all-time user reviews when accessed in 2026; its recent-review snapshot was 84% positive from 25 reviews. The spread matters more than a single score: many critics liked the combat, but they did not agree that its stages, story and replay loop sustain the same quality throughout.
What critics liked about the combat
Richard Wakeling’s GameSpot review, published August 18, 2022, highlights the game’s fast, kinetic fighting and extensive motion-captured animations. He describes a 3D isometric take on the beat ’em up, with counters and movement that may bring the Batman: Arkham games to mind. GameSpot’s standfirst calls it “a modern beat-’em-up with extensive motion-captured animations that bring its frenetic combat to life with wince-inducing satisfaction.” The review disclosed that the publisher provided review code. That combat focus is also visible in the game’s mix of attacks and interactions: players can counter, dodge, finish enemies, use weapons and turn parts of the environment into takedown opportunities. The skill tree adds progression to the move set, while mission challenges and ranks give players reasons to revisit stages rather than treating each one as a one-time brawl.
Where the experience can fall short
Stage flow and pacing
Some reviews found that the stop-start structure of stages breaks up the momentum that makes the fighting appealing. Noisy Pixel’s 75/100 excerpt on Metacritic praises the action fantasy and stage interactions but says interruptions undercut it. That is a useful distinction: the core encounters may be satisfying while the transitions between them feel less fluid.

Controls can create friction
Wakeling notes one specific mapping problem: finishers and the revolver share a button, which can result in an unwanted shot. That kind of overlap is especially noticeable in a game where timing and quick reactions are central to the appeal. GameSpot review
Difficulty and enemy behavior are a matter of fit
GamesHub’s 40/100 Metacritic excerpt criticizes the fit between the game’s grounded combat, enemy aggression and the speed associated with retro arcade brawlers. Other excerpts are more positive: WellPlayed’s 90/100 review praises brutal, satisfying combat and progression, while Shacknews’ 70/100 review recognizes engaging fights and S-rank challenges but questions the pull of returning to the game. The story does not win over every reviewer
Games.cz’s 80/100 excerpt describes the game as simple but varied and inventive, while noting that the narrative loses its way near the end. The premise gives the action a clear deadline, but the critical response suggests not to choose this primarily for a tightly coherent story.

- A good fit: You want a solo action game where counters, finishers, weapons and environmental attacks are the main attraction, and you enjoy improving your performance or replaying stages for challenges.
- A less certain fit: You need consistently smooth stage flow, precise controls without awkward button overlap, or a story that remains compelling throughout.
- Check the content first: Steam identifies violence, blood and gore.

What is known about physical editions?
On March 28, 2024, the developer announced limited physical PS4 and Nintendo Switch editions for preorder through Limited Run Games, with that preorder window scheduled to close April 21, 2024. The announcement establishes that a physical release was offered then, not that either edition is currently in stock. It also announced a physical triple-LP soundtrack preorder and described the game soundtrack as 47 tracks. Developer announcement
