mimedir.dll is an Outlook component, so a missing-file error usually means that the Microsoft Office installation is damaged or incomplete. Before changing anything, check:
- Which program fails: Outlook itself, another Office application, or an unrelated program that is looking in the wrong folder.
- When the error appears: at Windows sign-in, when Outlook starts, while opening a calendar item, or after an Office update or repair.
- The wording: “missing,” “not found,” “could not be loaded,” “bad image,” or an Outlook crash naming
MIMEDIR.DLL. - The Office architecture: 32-bit Office can run on 64-bit Windows, and it requires the 32-bit Outlook files. Do not infer Office architecture from Windows architecture.
- The installation location: the file should belong to the Outlook installation directory, not
C:WindowsSystem32,C:WindowsSysWOW64, or an unrelated application folder. - Recent changes: Office updates, antivirus quarantine, cleanup software, disk problems, malware, or an interrupted installation.
Do not begin by downloading mimedir.dll. Repair the Office installation that owns the file.

What mimedir.dll does
mimedir.dll is the Microsoft Outlook component internally identified as Outlook Mimedir. Microsoft documents MIMEDIR as the Outlook library used in Outlook-generated iCalendar data, including calendar information exchanged through MIME and iCalendar formats. The Microsoft protocol documentation identifies it as Mimedir.dll in Outlook-generated data. Microsoft’s MS-OXCICAL documentation explains the component’s role.
It is part of Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Office, not a normal Windows runtime. It is not supplied by Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or the Windows operating system itself.

Microsoft update manifests list Mimedir.dll beside Outlook files such as outlook.exe, olmapi32.dll, mspst32.dll, and outlmime.dll. Microsoft has published the file in multiple Office generations, including Outlook 2000/2002, 2007, 2010, 2016, and later Office builds. The exact file depends on the installed Office product, update level, and architecture.
Official Microsoft file lists show separate builds for 32-bit and 64-bit Outlook. For example, an Outlook 2010 update lists an x86 Mimedir.dll at version 14.0.7159.5000 and 362,048 bytes, while the x64 file at the same version is 544,416 bytes. An Outlook 2016 update lists version 16.0.5450.1000 in separate x86 and x64 packages. Those values identify particular Microsoft updates, not universal replacement targets. Microsoft’s Outlook 2010 file information and Outlook 2016 file information show why matching the complete Office installation matters.
What the error means
Common reported messages include:
MIMEDIR.DLL is missingThe program can't start because MIMEDIR.DLL is missing from your computerMIMEDIR.DLL was not foundMIMEDIR.DLL cannot be locatedMIMEDIR.DLL file cannot be loadedMIMEDIR.DLL file could not be loaded
These messages describe a loader failure, but they do not identify the cause. The file may be absent, damaged, the wrong architecture, blocked by security software, or accompanied by other broken Office files.
A “bad image” or “not designed to run on Windows” message usually points to a corrupted or incompatible binary rather than a simple missing-file problem. An Outlook crash may also name MIMEDIR.DLL as the faulting module. That does not prove that replacing the DLL alone will cure the crash. Outlook add-ins, a failed update, a damaged profile, or broader Office corruption can produce the same symptom.
Fix 1: Run Office Quick Repair
Quick Repair is the safest first repair because it works on the parent Office installation instead of trying to replace one DLL.
Windows 11
- Close Outlook and every other Office application.
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Apps → Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft 365, Microsoft Office, or the relevant Office edition.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it and choose Modify.
- Approve the administrator prompt.
- Select Quick Repair.
- Select Repair and wait for the process to finish.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Outlook and test the action that produced the error.
Windows 10 or a traditional Office installation
- Close all Office programs.
- Press Windows key, type
Control Panel, and open it. - Select Programs → Programs and Features.
- Select Microsoft Office or Microsoft 365.
- Select Change.
- Choose Quick Repair, then select Repair.
- Restart Windows after the repair completes.
- Test Outlook again.
Quick Repair may not provide a detailed explanation if it fails. Its success is practical: Outlook starts without the mimedir.dll message, calendar functions work, and no new Office loader error appears.
If the repair option is unavailable, the entry is missing, or the error returns immediately, continue to Online Repair. Do not copy a DLL into a Windows folder as a workaround.
Fix 2: Run Office Online Repair
Online Repair replaces the complete Office installation. It takes longer and may require an internet connection, but it is the appropriate next step when Quick Repair cannot restore a missing or corrupt Outlook component.
- Close Outlook and all Office applications.
- Open Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features.
- Select the Microsoft Office or Microsoft 365 entry.
- Select Change.
- Choose Online Repair.
- Select Repair and follow the prompts.
- Keep the computer connected to the internet.
- Restart Windows when prompted, or restart it manually after the repair completes.
- Launch Outlook and test it.
Microsoft describes Quick Repair as the faster repair and Online Repair as the option that replaces the complete Office installation. The available screens can differ between Click-to-Run, MSI-based, Microsoft 365, and older Office installations. Microsoft’s repair guidance for Office programs covers the general repair process.
If Online Repair succeeds, do not keep a downloaded replacement DLL in the Office folder. The repaired installation should contain the correct file and its matching dependencies.

- [Ideal for One Person] — With a one-time purchase of Microsoft Office Home & Business 2024, you can create, organize, and get things done.
- [Classic Office Apps] — Includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote.
- [Desktop Only & Customer Support] — To install and use on one PC or Mac, on desktop only. Microsoft 365 has your back with readily available technical support through chat or phone.
When the Windows component store or protected system files are also failing, manually repeating repair commands can become guesswork. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it identifies; its repair action requires the full version, and it is optional rather than necessary for every mimedir.dll case.
Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
A security product may quarantine a file after an update, cleanup event, or detection. This is possible, but do not assume that antivirus is the cause and do not disable protection to make Outlook start.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent entries for a file associated with the Microsoft Office installation.
- Expand an entry to see its path, detection name, and action.
- If the file is identified as belonging to a genuine, digitally signed Office installation, follow Microsoft’s documented restore or allow workflow only after confirming the detection is a false positive.
- If the path is unexpected, the signature is absent, or the detection is unclear, leave the item quarantined and repair Office instead.
Run a full scan before restoring a quarantined file. If malware or tampering is plausible, use Microsoft Defender Offline or the full-scan options in Microsoft’s Windows Security guidance.
A restored file can still be damaged or mismatched. If Outlook continues to fail, run Online Repair after the security check.
Fix 4: Confirm the Office architecture
A 64-bit Windows installation does not guarantee that Office is 64-bit. Many systems run 32-bit Office on 64-bit Windows. A 32-bit Outlook installation needs its 32-bit mimedir.dll; a 64-bit installation needs the x64 build.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →To check Office from an Office application:
- Open Word or another Office application if Outlook will not start.
- Select File → Account.
- Select About Word, About Outlook, or the corresponding application name.
- Read the line that ends in 32-bit or 64-bit.
If no Office application opens:
- Open Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features.
- Look at the installed Office entry and its product details.
- If the architecture is still unclear, use the Office repair or reinstall process rather than guessing from a DLL filename.
Do not mix a 32-bit file into a 64-bit Office folder, or the reverse. Do not switch architecture by copying files. Microsoft’s current installer normally selects 64-bit Office unless an existing 32-bit Office installation or an incompatible standalone Office application causes it to retain 32-bit Office. Switching requires uninstalling Office first. The Microsoft Office installation guidance explains the architecture choices.
Fix 5: Reinstall the matching Office product
If Online Repair fails, the installation may be too damaged for in-place repair. Reinstall the same licensed Office product through Microsoft rather than using a standalone DLL.
For Microsoft 365 or Office 2024:
- Confirm that you can sign in to the Microsoft account associated with the license.
- Uninstall Office through Settings → Apps → Installed apps, or use Microsoft’s official removal process.
- Restart Windows.
- Sign in through Microsoft’s Microsoft 365 or Office 2024 installation page.
- Download and install the correct Office package.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Outlook and allow Office updates to complete.
For Office 2016, 2019, or 2021, use Microsoft’s official reinstall instructions.
For an older Office product, use the original licensed media or the Microsoft account and download channel associated with that license. Very old editions may not have a current installer. Reinstall the same product and architecture first, then apply the updates that the product supports.

If ordinary removal leaves Office entries or services behind, Microsoft provides an Office uninstall tool. Use it before reinstalling, not as a reason to download a replacement DLL.
Fix 6: Check Windows integrity as a secondary repair
Because mimedir.dll belongs to Office rather than Windows, System File Checker is not normally the primary way to restore it. Use DISM and SFC when other Windows components are also failing, Windows Update is damaged, or Office repair reports system-level problems.

- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Run Office Online Repair again if Outlook still reports
mimedir.dll.
Run the commands separately. DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows system files. Neither command is a promise to restore an Outlook DLL. Microsoft documents the process in its DISM repair guidance and System File Checker documentation.
If DISM or SFC reports that it could not repair files, investigate Windows servicing, disk health, malware, or a damaged Windows installation rather than repeatedly downloading mimedir.dll.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix 7: Investigate drivers only when the wider system is failing
mimedir.dll is not a hardware driver, and Device Manager will not normally repair it. Do not update a display, audio, storage, or chipset driver merely because Outlook names this file.
Driver work becomes relevant only if Windows has broader instability, disk errors, repeated application crashes, or a recent hardware or storage change:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click a device showing a warning icon.
- Select Properties → Driver.
- Check the provider and driver status.
- Use Update Driver, or obtain the driver from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and retest Outlook.
Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what it finds; installation of drivers requires the full version, and it is optional. For a mimedir.dll error with no wider hardware symptoms, repairing Office remains the correct fix.
Why regsvr32 mimedir.dll usually does nothing
Do not routinely run:
regsvr32 mimedir.dll
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose missing-DLL repair command. An Outlook runtime component can be present and valid without being a self-registering COM library.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteRunning the command may produce an error such as “the module was loaded but the entry-point was not found.” That does not mean Windows needs a different copy of the file. It means the command is inappropriate for that DLL. Microsoft documents the purpose and syntax of Regsvr32.
Why downloading or copying the DLL is unsafe
A random DLL download can fail for several reasons:
- The file may be malware or modified.
- It may be a different Office generation.
- It may be the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- It may have a different update level from the surrounding Outlook files.
- It may require other missing or damaged dependencies.
- Windows or Office may reject it because its signature and installation context do not match.
- Copying it into
System32,SysWOW64, or an unrelated program folder can create additional conflicts.
Even a genuine file with the right name is not necessarily the right file for the installed Outlook build. Microsoft’s Office repair and reinstall processes restore the component together with its dependent files, services, update state, and architecture.
If Outlook still crashes after repair
When Outlook launches but then crashes and identifies MIMEDIR.DLL, distinguish a crash from a missing-file loader error.

- At the bottom, set Manage to COM Add-ins.
- Select Go.
- Clear the checkboxes for add-ins.
- Restart Outlook normally.
- Re-enable add-ins one at a time until the failing add-in is identified.
Safe mode diagnoses add-in conflicts; it does not repair mimedir.dll. If Outlook fails in safe mode after Online Repair, reinstall Office and then check the Office architecture, Windows integrity, disk health, and security history.

If every Office application fails, the problem is broader than Outlook. Continue with Windows servicing and malware checks, then create a clean Office installation. If only one Windows user profile is affected, test with another profile after Office repair; profile corruption can resemble application corruption.
System Restore is a last resort. Use it only when a restore point clearly predates the failure and normal Office repair or reinstall is unavailable. It is not a targeted replacement method for mimedir.dll.
FAQ
Is mimedir.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is an Outlook component supplied with Microsoft Office or a related Outlook installation. It should not normally be placed in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
Can 32-bit Office run on 64-bit Windows?
Yes. Windows architecture and Office architecture are separate. 32-bit Office requires the 32-bit Outlook components, while 64-bit Office requires the x64 components. Check Office’s About screen before considering a reinstall.
Should I register mimedir.dll?
Usually no. regsvr32 is for DLLs designed to register themselves. It does not repair an incomplete Outlook installation.
Will SFC restore mimedir.dll?
Not normally. SFC repairs protected Windows system files. Use it as a secondary check when Windows itself appears damaged, then repair Office separately.
What if antivirus quarantined the file?
Review Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection history. Restore only a verified, digitally signed file from the genuine Office installation. If there is any doubt, scan the system and run Office repair instead.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat is the safest source for the file?
The safest source is not an isolated download. Use Microsoft Office Quick Repair, Online Repair, or a complete reinstall from Microsoft’s official Office installation channel.
What if the program asking for mimedir.dll is not Outlook?
First identify why that program expects an Outlook component. Do not put the DLL into the program’s folder without confirming that it legitimately bundles or depends on Outlook. Repairing or reinstalling the licensed Office installation is safer than satisfying an unknown path with a copied file.
What is the correct fix for an obsolete Office version?
Use the original licensed media or Microsoft account download channel, reinstall the matching product and architecture, and apply the updates that version supports. If the installer cannot restore the product, use a supported Office release rather than combining files from different generations.
