A Mindustry dedicated server is a standalone, headless Java process that you administer from a terminal. The basic workflow is to launch the server JAR, use host to open a map, and use config plus the other console commands to control identity, access, moderation, saving, and diagnostics.

What a dedicated Mindustry server is
A dedicated server runs without the normal game interface. It is intended to stay online as a separate process while players connect with their game clients. Administration happens in the terminal window where the server is running, so the machine can be left hosting even when nobody is using it locally.
That differs from a local LAN or Steam-hosted game. A dedicated process has its own server directory, configuration, save files, logs, and network port. The official Mindustry documentation describes it as a standalone, headless version focused on providing multiplayer service.

Install and start the server
1. Install Java and obtain the server release
Install a Java runtime supported by the Mindustry release you intend to run, then download that release’s server JAR. Keep the JAR in a dedicated directory rather than mixing it with unrelated files; maps, saves, logs, mods, and generated settings are easier to manage when the server has its own working folder.
2. Launch the JAR from its directory
- Open a terminal or Command Prompt in the server directory.
- Run
java -jar [server].jar, replacing the bracketed text with the actual filename. For example, if the file is namedserver.jar, runjava -jar server.jar. - Wait for the server console to finish loading, then type
helpand press Enter.
The command prompt is the administration interface. If Java reports that the command is not found, install Java or add its executable to the system path before troubleshooting Mindustry itself.

Use host <mapname> [mode] to open a game. The mode defaults to survival when omitted. If the map argument is also omitted, the server can select a random map, so an explicit command such as host Ground Zero survival is preferable when you need a predictable start. Use maps first if you need to check the names available on the server.
4. Open the network port
The setup guidance uses port 6567. On Windows, allow both TCP and UDP traffic for that port in Windows Firewall. A server without router port forwarding is generally reachable only by clients on the same local network. For internet players, forward the selected port from the router to the server machine and allow it through the machine’s firewall. If you change the port later, update the firewall and forwarding rule to match.

Useful administration sequences
To inspect the current state before changing anything, run status, config, and dumpsettings. To announce maintenance, use say Server restarting in five minutes. Pause a live round with pause on, resume it with pause off, and stop hosting with stop. After adding maps to disk, use reloadmaps; after changing loaded content, use reloadassets when appropriate.

config is the central command for persistent server options. It has three practical forms:
configprints the available configuration names and their descriptions.config <name>displays the current value of one setting.config <name> <value>changes that setting.
For a reset, supply default as the value: config <name> default. This restores the setting’s declared default instead of requiring you to remember the original value.

Value parsing rules
- Boolean settings accept
onandtrueas enabled values.offand other false-like values disable them. - Numeric input is parsed as an integer, so use whole-number values for limits, intervals, ports, and other numeric options.
- String values are stored as text. Literal
nsequences are converted to newline characters, which lets a command-line value contain multiple lines. - After a change, the server calls its settings-save routine, so the new value is persisted rather than existing only for the current process.
When a value behaves unexpectedly, query it again with config <name>. If you need a complete diagnostic snapshot, dumpsettings prints every stored setting. Configuration names and defaults are release-sensitive; use the help and config output from the version you are actually running rather than copying an old default-value list.
Settings organized by the job they perform
Identity and server discovery
These settings determine what players see and where they connect.
namecontrols the server name shown to clients.descsupplies the description displayed under the name. The documented maximum is 100 characters, so keep longer announcements in the MOTD instead.motdis the message shown when a player connects. Use the string newline conversion when you need a multi-line greeting.portselects the listening network port. The setup guidance uses 6567; any change must be reflected in firewall and router rules.
A clear name, a short description, and a connection message solve different discovery problems: the name identifies the server in a list, the description sets expectations before joining, and the MOTD communicates information at connection time.
Access and moderation
enableVotekickenables or disables player vote-kicking.whitelistenables whitelist enforcement. Turning it on is useful for private communities, but you must also maintain the permitted player list through the server’s administrative controls.allowCustomClientscontrols whether custom clients are allowed to connect.strictenables strict mode, which corrects player positions and prevents duplicate UUIDs.subnet-banis administered as a command rather than a normal named setting: usesubnet-ban add <address>to block a subnet andsubnet-ban remove <address>to remove that block.

Abuse prevention and rate controls
Mindustry exposes separate controls for different kinds of abuse instead of one universal spam switch:

These values are deliberately expressed as windows, limits, and thresholds. Change one category at a time and observe normal player behavior before tightening another; an aggressive limit can reject legitimate rapid building or interaction, especially on a busy map.
Automation, saving, and uptime
startCommandsstores comma-separated commands that run at startup. It can automate a standard launch sequence, such as hosting a particular map after the process starts.autoUpdateupdates and exits when a bleeding-edge update arrives. Treat this as an operational choice: automatic exit still requires a service manager, scheduled task, or administrator to start the new process.autosaveenables periodic map saving.autosaveAmountcontrols how many autosaves are retained.autosaveSpacingcontrols the spacing between autosaves.autoPausepauses the game when nobody is online, which prevents an unattended round from progressing while the server is empty.roundExtraTimeadds a delay before a new map loads after game over.
Autosave amount and spacing are a trade-off between recovery points and disk use. Auto-pause is useful for casual communities that want to preserve a round between visits, while roundExtraTime gives players time to reconnect or read the end-of-round state.
Logging and diagnostics
loggingwrites logs to files.debugenables debug logging.logCommandsrecords player commands.maxLogLengthlimits the log-file size in bytes.snapshotIntervalsets the client entity snapshot interval in milliseconds.socketInput,socketInputPort, andsocketInputAddressprovide local TCP socket control.
Enable ordinary logging before turning on verbose debugging. If you are diagnosing a short-lived problem, debug logging and command logging can provide useful evidence; for a continuously running public server, pair them with a sensible maxLogLength so logs do not grow without bound.

Rules, player limits, and map state
Global rules
The rules command manages rules that apply regardless of the selected map. Run rules to list them. Use rules add <name> <value...> to add or change a global rule and rules remove <name> to remove one. Because these rules are global, check them when a map behaves differently from its normal defaults.
Player capacity
playerlimit off disables the player limit, while playerlimit <number> sets one. A high limit is not automatically better: connection bandwidth, CPU time, map complexity, and moderation workload all rise with the number of active players. Set a limit your machine and administrators can support, then verify the result with status.
Maps and content reloads
maps all, maps custom, and maps default help distinguish installed custom content from built-in maps. After copying a map into the server directory, run reloadmaps before trying to host it. Use reloadassets when content or assets on disk have changed. Reloading does not replace the need to confirm that a map name is spelled exactly as the server reports it.
Why friends cannot connect
Check whether the server is actually hosting
- Run
statusand confirm a game is open. Starting the Java process alone does not necessarily mean a map is being hosted. - If needed, run
host <mapname> [mode]. - Run
config portand note the active port.
Check the host machine
- Allow both TCP and UDP traffic for the active port in the operating-system firewall. The documented default is 6567.
- Confirm that another application is not already using the port.
- Keep the Java process running; closing the terminal or using
exitends the server.
Check the router and the address players use
Players on the same home network can often connect without port forwarding. Players on the internet generally cannot: forward the active port from the router to the server computer’s local address, then give friends the correct external address and port. If the server port was changed, forwarding the old 6567 value will not help.
Separate local and internet tests
First test from another device on the same LAN. A successful local connection with failed internet connections points toward router forwarding, firewall scope, or the address being shared rather than a Mindustry command problem. If local clients also fail, recheck the JAR launch, the hosted map, the configured port, and firewall rules.

- Record the release version with your server notes. Command names and defaults can change between releases.
- Query a setting before changing it, and use
defaultwhen you need a clean rollback. - Keep the server directory and its saves backed up before changing mods, maps, or global rules.
- Use
sayto announce restarts or rule changes so connected players are not surprised. - Use
stopbefore maintenance when possible, rather than terminating the Java process abruptly. - Restrict socket control to the intended local address and port, and treat server-side JavaScript as an administrative capability.
Choosing a practical baseline
For a small private server, set a recognizable name, a concise desc, a useful motd, enable whitelist, choose a sensible playerlimit, and turn on autosave. For a public server, review enableVotekick, strict, antiSpam, the interaction and message rate controls, logging, and a finite maxLogLength. For a mostly unattended server, add carefully tested startCommands, consider autoPause, and document the port and restart procedure.
There is no universal best configuration. The correct values depend on whether the server is private or public, how many players it serves, how much automation the host can support, and how much tolerance the community has for strict anti-abuse limits. Use the live command help and configuration output from your installed release as the final authority.
