Mindustry has no official minimum RAM or CPU requirement for a dedicated server. The current server documentation explains how to run the standalone Java server, but it does not publish a memory figure, processor class, maximum player count tied to hardware, or benchmark. Your practical requirement depends on the number of players, map and mode, mods, and what else runs on the machine.
For a small local game, the in-game LAN or Steam host is simplest. For public access, more resources, or continuous availability, use the dedicated headless server on a Linux or Windows machine. The documented network port is 6567 over both TCP and UDP.

What the official documentation actually specifies
The dedicated server is a separate, headless version of Mindustry. You install the required Java runtime, obtain the server release, start its JAR from a terminal, and administer it through the server console. The guide recommends a dedicated Linux or Windows machine rather than treating the server as an incidental process inside a player’s game.
What the documentation does not specify is just as important:

- No minimum CPU model, core count, or clock speed.
- No official maximum player count for a given machine.
- No published resource-consumption benchmark.
- No universal hardware recommendation for every map, mode, or mod set.
Consequently, a number copied from another game, a community container, or a hosting advertisement should not be presented as Mindustry’s official requirement. Those figures may describe one workload, but they are not project-wide guarantees.
The official guide does provide one concrete networking requirement: “Make sure to allow port 6567 TCP and UDP.” Starting the Java process also does not automatically start a game session; after launch, the operator uses the console command host <mapname> [mode] to host a map.
How to size RAM for a Mindustry server
Because there is no published baseline, RAM selection is a capacity-planning decision rather than a matter of meeting a stated minimum. The useful question is not “How many gigabytes does Mindustry require?” but “How much memory must be available for this workload while the operating system and other services remain healthy?”

More connected players generally mean more state to track and more network activity. A quiet private session and a busy public server should not be treated as the same workload. Plan for the number of simultaneous players you actually expect, including bursts above the usual average, instead of relying on a nominal server slot count.
Map, mode, and simulation load
Map size, unit activity, enemy waves, and game mode can change the amount of state the server maintains. A simple map with a few players is a different operating condition from a large, highly active map. The official documentation does not turn those variables into a RAM table, so any sizing estimate should be labeled as an operational assumption, not an official figure.

Mods and plugins
Mods can add content and behavior that changes memory use. A server with a substantial mod set may need more headroom than an unmodified session, and a mod that leaks memory or performs expensive work can become the limiting factor regardless of the host’s nominal capacity. Test the exact mod set you intend to run.
Other software on the host
A machine running backups, monitoring, a web service, containers, or several game servers must reserve memory for those processes too. A “Mindustry requirement” that ignores the operating system and neighboring services is not a useful sizing figure. Isolation on a dedicated machine makes resource behavior easier to observe and troubleshoot.

A practical sizing method without inventing a minimum
- Define the expected peak player count, map rotation, mode, and mods.
- Choose a machine with enough memory for the operating system and every service that will share it.
- Run the intended workload, not just an empty server, and watch memory use during the busiest period.
- Leave headroom for short-lived spikes, updates, logs, and maintenance rather than operating continuously at the limit.
- If memory pressure appears, reduce competing services or workload complexity, then move to a larger host if necessary.
This process produces a workload-specific decision. It does not create an official Mindustry minimum, because none is published.
What CPU does a Mindustry server need?
The same evidence gap applies to the processor. The official pages do not name a CPU family, core count, clock speed, or benchmark result. Avoid claims such as “Mindustry needs a quad-core processor” unless you clearly identify them as a particular operator’s test rather than a project requirement.
CPU demand is shaped by the simulation the server must process: the number of active players and entities, map and mode behavior, mods, and simultaneous work from other programs. A lightly used server can behave very differently from a busy, heavily modified one. For that reason, processor selection should focus on available capacity for the expected workload and on avoiding contention with unrelated services.

During a trial run, monitor sustained CPU utilization and whether the server remains responsive during peak activity. If the server process is competing with backups or another game, moving those jobs elsewhere can help more than changing the nominal CPU specification. If the simulation remains CPU-bound after other work is removed, a host with more processing capacity is the appropriate next step. Neither outcome changes the absence of an official numeric requirement.

Mindustry offers two broad approaches: host inside the game for a small local session, or operate the standalone dedicated server. The right choice depends on availability, reachability, administration, isolation, and privacy—not only on RAM and CPU.

How can I play with someone across networks?
An in-game LAN session is intended for people on the same local network. For players on separate networks, run a reachable dedicated server or configure a home-hosted server so outside traffic can reach it. That normally means forwarding the documented port on the router and allowing it through the host firewall. Because home hosting reveals a public IP to connecting players, consider whether a hosted machine is a better privacy choice. Set up a dedicated Mindustry server
The official setup is deliberately straightforward, but each stage matters. Use a machine you can leave running and administer, with Linux or Windows as recommended by the guide.
- Prepare the operating system. Update the machine, create a dedicated directory for the server, and ensure you can open a terminal or command prompt with permission to run the process.
- Install the Java version required by the server release. The correct Java version is a prerequisite. If the process reports an unsupported class version or similar startup error, verify the installed runtime before changing hardware.
- Obtain the server release. Place the Mindustry server JAR and any configuration or content files you intend to use in the server directory. Keep the filename you use for the launch command consistent with the actual file.
- Launch the JAR. From that directory, run
java -jar server.jar, replacingserver.jarwith the release filename. Keep the terminal session available so you can read startup messages and issue commands. - Inspect available commands. At the server console, enter
help. This confirms that the process is running and shows the commands exposed by that release. - Host a map. Use
host <mapname> [mode]with the map name and, where needed, the mode. Until a map is hosted, a running Java process is not necessarily an active game session. - Configure the firewall. Allow inbound Mindustry traffic on port 6567 for both TCP and UDP, matching the protocol requirement in the official guide.
- Configure routing when hosting at home. Give the server machine a stable local address, forward port 6567 for both protocols to that address, and apply the corresponding host-firewall rule. Router menus differ, so follow the instructions for your specific model.
- Test from the intended network. Verify local connectivity first, then test from outside the home network if the server is public. A local test cannot prove that internet routing or port forwarding is correct.
Port forwarding, firewalls, and public exposure
Port forwarding is needed only when players outside the local network must reach a server behind a home router. Forwarding just TCP or just UDP is incomplete because the documented setup calls for both on port 6567. The router’s destination should be the server computer’s local address, and the computer’s firewall must allow the same traffic.

If local players can connect but outside players cannot, check the forwarding rule, the server’s local address, the host firewall, and whether the test is genuinely coming from another network. If nobody can connect, first confirm that the process is running and that a map was started with the host command. Do not expose a home service without considering who can see the public IP and how you will keep the operating system and Java installation updated.
Can a Raspberry Pi run a Mindustry server?
The official FAQ says a dedicated server can run on a Raspberry Pi when the correct Java version is installed. That is a compatibility statement, not a performance guarantee. It does not identify a Pi model, RAM amount, supported player count, map, mod set, or benchmark.
If you use a Pi, treat it as an experiment tied to a defined workload. Confirm that the required Java runtime is available for the operating system, run the exact map and mods you intend to host, and observe responsiveness and memory use under peak activity. A Pi that handles a small private session should not automatically be assumed suitable for a larger public server.

- Other services sharing the machine and their resource schedules.
- Whether the server must stay online when no player is present.
- Whether access is local-only or public across the internet.
- Who will install updates, restart the process, review logs, and respond to failures.
- Available memory and CPU headroom observed under the real workload.
- Privacy implications of exposing a home public IP.
Troubleshoot common failures
The JAR starts, but no game is available
A running process is only the server program. Use help to confirm the console is responsive, then issue host <mapname> [mode]. Check the console for map, mod, or Java errors if hosting fails.
Local players connect, but internet players cannot
Check that port 6567 is forwarded to the correct local machine for both TCP and UDP, that the host firewall permits it, and that the test client is outside the home network. A changed local address can silently invalidate an old forwarding rule.

The server is unstable after adding content
Reproduce the problem with the same map and mod set, inspect console output, and remove or update the component that introduced the failure. If resource use is high, stop unrelated services or move to a host with more available capacity.
Java reports a version or startup error
Install the Java version required by the specific server release and ensure the command invokes that installation. Changing RAM or CPU will not fix an incompatible runtime.
Performance degrades during busy periods
Measure CPU and memory while the problem is occurring, note the player count and map state, and compare that with background services. Reduce contention or workload complexity before deciding that a larger machine is necessary.
What hosting costs and responsibilities involve
The official guide mentions cloud or dedicated hosting as an alternative to a home machine and gives AWS, Linode, and DigitalOcean as examples. It does not establish current prices, a required plan, or a preferred provider. Prices and allocations change by region and date, so compare them directly if you rent a host.
Your total operating cost also includes administration: Java and operating-system updates, backups of configurations and worlds, firewall rules, monitoring, and time spent restarting or troubleshooting the process. A low-cost allocation that is starved during peak play can be less useful than a slightly larger one with predictable headroom. Conversely, paying for a large machine without measuring the workload provides no evidence that the extra capacity is needed.
Bottom line
Mindustry’s official documentation does not publish a RAM or CPU minimum, so there is no authoritative number to quote. Choose between an in-game LAN/Steam host and a standalone dedicated server based on availability, network reach, privacy, and administration. For the dedicated setup, install the required Java runtime, launch the server JAR, host a map from the console, and allow port 6567 over both TCP and UDP. Size the machine from your own player, map, mod, and co-hosted-service workload, then verify that decision under peak conditions.
