MineColonies – Create & Conquer is a Forge modpack for Minecraft 1.20.1 that combines MineColonies settlement management with changed biomes and world generation, new combat, magic, technology and exploration. The reliable setup is to install the pack’s current CurseForge profile, leave the Minecraft and Forge versions unchanged, and use the matching 1.20.1 Forge server ZIP when hosting. The pack team says 8–10 GB of RAM is the minimum for smooth play with intensive shaders and textures; a computer running both a local server and client needs additional headroom.
Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
This guide covers client installation, memory planning, a self-hosted server, version control, recovery and the first decisions after you place your Town Hall.

Create & Conquer is an exploration-focused pack built around the MineColonies colony system. You establish and expand a settlement while travelling through a world with changed biomes and generation, then use the pack’s combat, magic and technology content to support progression. Colony advancement is loosely tiered rather than a single straight line, so your order of buildings and expeditions affects how quickly the settlement develops.
The current CurseForge listing targets Minecraft 1.20.1 on Forge. Its listed 3.6.1 release has a separate 1.20.1 Forge server ZIP. Treat that release, Minecraft version, Forge build and every included configuration as one matched package: changing one part independently can produce missing-mod errors, recipe differences or a world that will not load.
#1 Best Overall
- DELUXE COLLECTION — Includes Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition, three Bedrock add-ons, three exclusive Character Creator items, and 700 Minecoins.
- CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that’s unique in every playthrough.
- EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world filled with surprises.
- SURVIVE THE ADVENTURE — Face mysterious foes, travel across exciting landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
- PLAY TOGETHER — Play cross-platform with friends in Bedrock Edition on console, mobile, and PC, or join community servers in Java Edition on PC, Mac, and Linux. Online console multiplayer requires a platform-specific subscription (sold separately).
The project is still being developed. The author warns that bugs may occur and asks players to report them through the project’s issue tracker or Discord. An official server is advertised through Discord and requires whitelisting; that is separate from running your own server.
Requirements before you install
Software and account
- A legitimate Minecraft Java Edition installation that the CurseForge app can connect to.
- The CurseForge app with Minecraft added as a supported game.
- The Create & Conquer profile for Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge, or the exact server release you intend to join.
- Enough free storage for the profile, its dependencies, Java runtime files and world saves. Keep extra space for backups and generated chunks.
Memory planning
The pack listing states: “A minimum of 8GB–10GB of RAM is required for the pack to run smoothly with intensive shaders, textures, and similar features.” That is a floor for the game process, not a recommendation to assign every gigabyte in the computer to Minecraft. Your operating system, launcher and background applications still need memory.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Plan more headroom when you enable shaders, use high-resolution texture packs, generate new terrain rapidly, or run a server and client on the same machine. A 16GB DDR4 desktop RAM kit is a practical hardware search term for an upgrade, but DDR generation, speed, motherboard support and available slots must match your specific computer. Laptop memory and desktop memory are not interchangeable.

Storage and graphics considerations
A fast SSD reduces startup and chunk-loading waits, although it does not replace adequate RAM. Start with the pack’s default visual settings. Increase render distance, simulation distance, shader quality or texture resolution one setting at a time, watching memory use and frame-time stability rather than chasing a particular FPS number. No guaranteed FPS or independent benchmark is established for this pack.
Install the client with CurseForge
The launcher route is the least error-prone because it obtains the pack files and dependencies together.
- Install the CurseForge app and add Minecraft when prompted.
- Open Browse, search for MineColonies – Create & Conquer, and select the project by Isk053.
- Choose the current profile shown for Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge. Check the displayed pack release before clicking install.
- Allow CurseForge to download the modpack and all listed dependencies. Do not replace individual mods with similarly named files from another release.
- Launch the profile once with its default settings. This first run creates configuration folders and confirms that the installation can reach the title screen.
- Only after that test should you adjust memory, graphics or shader settings. Keep the profile’s Minecraft version, Forge build and pack release unchanged when joining a shared world.
If the launcher shows a different current release from the one your friends or server use, install that exact release instead of assuming “latest” is compatible. Every player joining a multiplayer world should have the same profile version.

Manual Forge installation: when and how to use it
A manually assembled profile is useful for administrators who need a controlled instance, but it creates more opportunities for mismatch. The official MineColonies installation guidance recommends Forge 47.1.3 for manually assembled Minecraft 1.20.1 profiles. If the Create & Conquer profile pins another Forge build, follow the pack’s pinned build rather than overriding it with 47.1.3.
- Install the Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge build required by the pack. Use the Forge installer’s Install client option for a personal game instance.
- Place the pack’s mods, configuration files, scripts, resource files and dependencies in that instance exactly as supplied for the selected release.
- Start the instance once, stop it after the title screen appears, and inspect the log for missing or duplicate files.
- Do not copy a configuration from a different Create & Conquer release. Back up the working instance before making any manual change.
For most players, the CurseForge profile is preferable because it automates dependency retrieval and preserves the pack’s intended file set. Manual installation is not a performance upgrade; it is an administration choice.
How much RAM should you allocate?
| Use case | Planning guidance | What can change the result |
|---|---|---|
| Client with default visuals | Stay at or above the pack team’s 8–10 GB minimum for smooth operation. | Render distance, loaded chunks, background applications and world age. |
| Client with intensive shaders or high-resolution textures | Reserve additional headroom beyond the stated minimum. | Shader complexity, texture resolution and graphics hardware. |
| Local server and client on one computer | Plan additional memory for two processes; do not assign all physical RAM to Minecraft. | Player count, colony size, exploration rate and operating-system workload. |
| Dedicated server | Allocate memory appropriate to your group and world, then monitor actual use. | Concurrent players, chunk generation and the number of active colonies. |
The listing does not publish a player-count capacity table or a server-memory formula. Avoid promising a fixed number of players from the 8–10 GB statement; that figure describes smooth pack operation with demanding visual features, not a measured server limit.

Set up a self-hosted Create & Conquer server
Use the server ZIP listed with the same pack release as the clients. The listing identifies it as a Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge server pack. A server assembled from a different release can appear to start while still producing registry, recipe or world errors when clients connect.
Prepare the server files
- Download the server ZIP associated with the exact Create & Conquer release you want to run.
- Create a new, dedicated server directory and extract the ZIP there. Do not mix it with an unrelated Forge server or an existing world until you have a verified backup.
- Install Forge for Minecraft 1.20.1 using the Forge installer’s Install Server option, placing it in the server directory or the location required by the pack’s files.
- Start the server once. This generates the world, configuration and agreement files required for a first run.
- When the Minecraft EULA prompt appears, read and accept it according to your legal requirements, then start the server again.
Make the server match the clients
- Compare the server’s mods, configs, scripts and pack release with one clean client profile.
- Keep Minecraft at 1.20.1 and use the Forge build required by that release.
- Remove experimental additions until a clean client can join. Add changes one at a time and retain a backup before each change.
- Ask every player to launch the same pack profile rather than assembling a “close enough” collection of mods.
Secure and maintain the world
- Set a whitelist for a private group and test that an unlisted account is rejected.
- Allocate memory appropriate to your actual player group and colony activity, leaving resources for the operating system.
- Create regular world backups, and keep at least one copy outside the live server directory. Back up before updating the pack or Forge.
- Share the server address only with intended players. Test a join with a second account before investing in a permanent colony.
- Record the pack release, Forge build, configuration changes and backup dates so you can reproduce a working setup after a failure.
The canonical listing and Forge guide establish the server artifact and the Install Server route, but they do not publish a complete command line, Java-version matrix, port-forwarding recipe or player-capacity table. Those details depend on the operating system, network equipment and the current files in the release. Follow the start script or launch instructions included with your ZIP, and verify environment-specific requirements there rather than copying a command from an unrelated pack.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Self-hosted server or managed hosting?
| Decision factor | Self-hosted server ZIP | Managed Minecraft hosting |
|---|---|---|
| File control | Full control over Forge files, configs, scripts and backups. | Control depends on the host’s modpack and file-management tools. |
| Maintenance | You install updates, monitor memory, secure access and recover worlds. | The provider may simplify deployment and restarts, but compatibility still must be checked. |
| Network setup | You handle firewall, address sharing and any router configuration required by your network. | The provider normally supplies a remote address; exact networking features vary. |
| Cost and capacity | No canonical price or capacity figure is established; hardware and connection determine limits. | Prices, supported Forge builds and player limits vary by provider and are not specified for this pack. |
| Recovery | You choose backup frequency, storage location and rollback method. | Check whether automated backups are included, how long they are retained and whether downloads are available. |
Choose self-hosting when you want direct file and backup control and are comfortable maintaining Forge. Choose a managed service when avoiding network and operating-system administration is more important, but confirm that it supports the exact 1.20.1 Forge release and Create & Conquer server files before paying.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
Troubleshoot the common installation failures
The game crashes before the title screen
- Confirm that the profile is Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge, not another Minecraft generation.
- Reinstall or repair the CurseForge profile instead of adding random replacement mods.
- Return memory and graphics settings to defaults, then test before enabling shaders or high-resolution textures.
- Check the latest log for a named missing dependency or duplicate mod, and correct the file set as a group.
A player cannot join the server
- Verify the client and server pack release, Minecraft version, Forge build, mods, configs and scripts are identical.
- Confirm that the player is on the whitelist and using the intended address.
- Test with a clean client profile. If that works, compare the failing player’s files against it rather than changing the server blindly.
The server starts but the world behaves incorrectly
- Stop the server and restore the most recent known-good backup before experimenting.
- Check whether the world was created with another pack release or modified configs.
- Do not remove world-generation or colony mods from an established save; that can make chunks or colony data unusable.
Performance degrades as the colony grows
- Lower shader, texture, render-distance or simulation-distance settings before deleting colony content.
- Stop unnecessary background applications and monitor whether memory is exhausted or the graphics system is overloaded.
- On a combined server-and-client machine, reduce simultaneous exploration and allow chunks to generate before adding more demanding settings.
What to do first after creating a colony
The official getting-started tutorial assumes the pack is already installed. In a new world, place a Town Hall and choose Create new colony. That establishes the colony rather than merely placing a decorative building.
Recommended Free Tools
- Choose a location with room for roads, housing, production buildings and future defenses. Avoid committing to a cramped site just because it is close to your initial spawn.
- Open the colony interfaces and follow the in-game progression and quest instructions. They reveal which buildings and resources the pack expects next.
- Prioritize a warehouse and a builder so materials can be stored and construction can proceed without constant manual delivery.
- Secure a dependable food supply before expanding the workforce. Hungry citizens slow the colony and create avoidable interruptions.
- Provide guards and basic defensive coverage as exploration and building attract danger. Do not treat combat progression as separate from settlement planning.
- Keep building queues realistic. A colony with several expensive projects competing for the same materials can appear stalled even when the systems are working.
- Expand outward only after checking storage, food and worker availability. More claims and buildings increase logistical demand.
The pack’s progression is designed to be discovered through its quests and MineColonies systems. Your first practical balance is between warehouse capacity, builder throughput, food and guards; adding decorative or specialist projects before those foundations are stable usually creates bottlenecks.
Version control and backup checklist
- Write down the Minecraft version (1.20.1), Forge build, Create & Conquer release and the date the world was created.
- Keep an untouched copy of the original server ZIP and a clean client profile.
- Back up the world before every pack, Forge, configuration or script change.
- Use a rotating schedule rather than overwriting the only backup; retain at least one copy away from the live machine.
- Test a backup by restoring it to a separate directory. A backup that has never been opened is only an assumption.
- When a player reports a problem, collect the exact client and server versions and the relevant log before changing files.
These habits matter more in a colony pack than in a short-lived survival world: MineColonies data, generated terrain and configuration changes can represent weeks of work.
Known limits of the published specifications
The pack listing reports 152,684 total downloads at the time of capture, but that number changes continuously and is not a measure of performance or server quality. The published material also does not establish a guaranteed FPS, a maximum player count, a universal Java version matrix, a standard port-forwarding procedure or provider pricing. Treat such figures as environment-specific unless the current pack files or your hosting documentation state otherwise.
