How to Use Tripwire to Detect Intrusions on an Ubuntu VPS

A practical Ubuntu VPS guide to Tripwire: install the Noble package, review policy scope, initialize a signed baseline, schedule daily integrity checks, locate reports, and triage or update authorized changes safely.

Tripwire detects suspicious changes on an Ubuntu VPS by comparing the current filesystem with a cryptographically signed baseline. Install Ubuntu’s package, review which paths the policy monitors, initialize the database only after the server is known-good, run sudo tripwire --check on a schedule, and investigate every difference before deciding whether to update the baseline.

What Tripwire detects—and what it cannot prove

Tripwire is a host-based file-integrity checker. Its policy selects files, directories, and attributes such as ownership, permissions, size, timestamps, and cryptographic content. The initial database is a signed snapshot of those objects. A later check compares the live filesystem with that snapshot and reports policy violations, including additions, deletions, and changes.

An alert means that monitored filesystem state differs from the approved snapshot. It does not, by itself, identify the person or process that made the change, prove that an attacker caused it, or prove that the VPS is otherwise clean. A capable intruder could alter unmonitored paths, disable collection, steal credentials, or compromise another layer. Use Tripwire alongside timely patching, firewall rules, SSH restrictions, least-privilege accounts, centralized logs, backups, and an incident-response process.

Prerequisites before installation

Tripwire is most useful when its baseline represents a trusted system. Before installing or initializing it:

  • Apply pending operating-system and application updates.
  • Finish the VPS hardening changes you intend to keep, including SSH, firewall, service-account, and privilege settings.
  • Complete the current deployment and record the files that deployment is expected to create or modify.
  • Check login history, running services, scheduled jobs, and administrator records for anything unexplained.
  • Arrange an administrator-controlled location for key backups and baseline backups. A local attacker must not be able to silently rewrite every copy.

If you already suspect compromise, do not initialize a new baseline. Preserve evidence, restrict access or isolate the VPS according to your incident process, and investigate from trusted tooling or a replacement host.

Install Tripwire from Ubuntu

Ubuntu Noble (24.04 LTS) publishes Tripwire package 2.4.3.7-5 in the universe repository. Install it with:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
sudo apt update
sudo apt install tripwire

The package setup can ask for site-key and local-key passphrases, mail settings, and report preferences. Use long, unique passphrases and store them in an administrator-controlled secret manager. Do not put them in shell history, tickets, public scripts, or documentation.

Installation creates or requests signed configuration and policy material under /etc/tripwire. The exact prompts and defaults can vary with the package configuration, so verify the generated files instead of assuming that every server used identical values.

Know the signed files, keys, and paths

Tripwire separates signing responsibilities. The site key signs the configuration and policy files. The local key signs the host-specific database and integrity reports. Possession of a key file and its passphrase is sensitive administrator material; protect both with root-only permissions and protected backups.

Purpose Typical Ubuntu path or setting What to verify
Signed configuration /etc/tripwire/tw.cfg The active settings, including policy, database, report, and key locations.
Plaintext configuration copy /etc/tripwire/twcfg.txt Use it to review settings; the signed file is what Tripwire trusts.
Signed policy /etc/tripwire/tw.pol Rules defining monitored objects and collected attributes.
Database /var/lib/tripwire/$(HOSTNAME).twd The host’s signed known-good snapshot.
Reports /var/lib/tripwire/report/$(HOSTNAME)-$(DATE).twr The actual report filename format comes from the REPORTFILE setting.
Site key /etc/tripwire/site.key Keep it separate from unprotected copies of policy and configuration.
Local key /etc/tripwire/$(HOSTNAME)-local.key It protects this host’s database and reports.

The $(HOSTNAME) and $(DATE) notation describes values substituted by the configuration; it is not necessarily a literal filename. Inspect the generated configuration and list the report directory before writing automation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review the policy before creating trust

The policy is the boundary of what Tripwire can see. It specifies filesystem objects and the properties collected for each object. A policy that omits a critical path cannot alert you when that path changes, while an overly broad policy can generate so much noise that real alerts are ignored.

High-value VPS paths

  • System executables and libraries used by running services.
  • Service configuration, including web-server, database, and application settings.
  • /etc/ssh, privilege-control files, authentication configuration, and other access-control material.
  • Web roots, deployment directories, and application startup files.
  • Scheduled-task locations and service-unit definitions.
  • Tripwire’s own configuration, policy, keys, and database metadata.

Paths that need deliberate treatment

Runtime trees, caches, queues, temporary directories, and other rapidly changing state can produce constant differences. Do not blindly remove them: first determine whether a volatile path contains security-relevant executables or configuration. Adjust include and exclude rules to match the services actually running on this VPS, then regenerate and sign the policy using the package’s Tripwire administration workflow. Keep a record of every exclusion and its rationale.

Review policy scope whenever you add a service. For example, deploying a web application may introduce a new document root, systemd unit, environment file, or scheduled worker. If those locations are not covered, Tripwire will remain silent when they change. Conversely, adding an entire upload or cache tree may create noise without improving assurance. Treat each rule as a decision about risk, change frequency, and the people who will investigate alerts.

Create the known-good baseline

Only initialize after updates, hardening, and deployment are complete and you have a reason to believe the VPS is clean. Then run:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
sudo tripwire --init

Initialization reads the signed policy, creates a database snapshot of the selected objects, and cryptographically signs that database with the local key. Enter the local-key passphrase when prompted. Treat the resulting database as a trust anchor: back it up, protect the backup from the VPS, and document which administrator approved the baseline and when.

Run a first check immediately after initialization to confirm that the installation and policy work as expected:

sudo tripwire --check

A check compares current properties with the baseline and writes a detailed report. If the initial check shows changes, determine whether they are caused by a final deployment, policy mistake, or unexplained activity. Do not update the database simply to make the report empty.

Run checks and locate reports

For a manual check, use:

sudo tripwire --check

Tripwire stores the report according to the signed configuration’s REPORTFILE value. On a standard Ubuntu layout, reports are under /var/lib/tripwire/report. Confirm the newest file with:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
sudo ls -lt /var/lib/tripwire/report/

Read the report as an investigation queue. Identify the object, the property that changed, and the rule that caused it to be monitored. Added files may indicate an unauthorized implant or a legitimate deployment; deleted files may reflect package removal, cleanup, or tampering; changed ownership, permissions, timestamps, or content each demand context.

Keep the original report even after resolving an alert. It records what Tripwire observed at a specific check and can be correlated with package transactions, deployment records, login history, sudo activity, service state, and centralized logs. Comparing repeated reports also helps distinguish a one-time deployment from continuing drift.

Schedule daily checks with systemd

A systemd timer gives you a repeatable schedule and records service output in the journal. Create a oneshot service:

sudo tee /etc/systemd/system/tripwire-check.service > /dev/null <<'EOF'
[Unit]
Description=Tripwire filesystem integrity check

[Service]
Type=oneshot
ExecStart=/usr/sbin/tripwire --check
EOF

Create a timer that runs once per day and catches up after a missed run:

[Unit]
Description=Daily Tripwire integrity check

[Timer]
OnCalendar=daily
Persistent=true

[Install]
WantedBy=timers.target
EOF

Load and enable it:

sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable --now tripwire-check.timer
sudo systemctl status tripwire-check.timer
sudo systemctl list-timers tripwire-check.timer

After a run, inspect the service and journal:

sudo systemctl start tripwire-check.service
sudo systemctl status tripwire-check.service
sudo journalctl -u tripwire-check.service --no-pager

Ensure that someone monitors both the Tripwire report location and the timer’s failure state. A scheduled command that nobody reviews is not an intrusion-detection control.

Cron alternative

If your operations standard is cron, create /etc/cron.d/tripwire-check with a root-owned entry such as:

17 3 * * * root /usr/sbin/tripwire --check

Use your existing mail or log-monitoring path for cron output, and verify that the scheduler is running. Do not assume that a local mailbox is monitored.

Make the alert path dependable

Scheduling and notification are separate controls. A timer can run successfully while nobody reads the report, and an email setting can be correct while the VPS mail relay is broken. Test the complete path after installation: confirm that a report file is created, verify that the journal records the service, and check that the intended mailbox or centralized log receives an actionable notification. Monitor failures of the timer and service as well as integrity differences.

Keep reports off-host when practical. An intruder with root access could delete local history or alter the scheduler. Forwarding reports or journal events to an administrator-controlled system preserves evidence and gives you a chance to respond if the VPS stops reporting altogether.

Triage every reported difference

Classify each change before taking action:

  1. Approved change: Match it to a change ticket, deployment record, administrator action, or documented configuration update.
  2. Expected package change: Confirm the package transaction and verify that the changed files belong to the package and expected version.
  3. Unexplained change: Preserve the report and investigate before modifying the host or baseline.

For unexplained changes, correlate Tripwire’s object and timestamp with package metadata, deployment logs, login history, sudo records, service status, scheduled jobs, and centralized system logs. Examine the changed file from trusted tooling when possible. A single modified binary, SSH configuration file, privilege rule, or startup script deserves higher urgency than a harmless cache file.

If evidence indicates compromise, isolate or replace the VPS according to your response plan. Do not run an update command to silence the alert, and do not trust a newly generated baseline made on the suspect host.

Prioritize by security impact

Not every difference deserves the same response time. Changes to authentication settings, privilege-control files, service startup definitions, system binaries, libraries, or web entry points can affect who controls the host or what code executes. A changed timestamp in a documented temporary tree is usually lower priority, but it still needs an explanation if the policy monitors it. Record the decision, evidence, and reviewer for each alert so the next administrator can understand why it was accepted.

Update the baseline after an authorized change

Legitimate upgrades and deployments can change monitored files. First complete and verify the change, then run a fresh check and retain the report as the approval record. Update only the objects that were authorized, not unexplained differences.

Tripwire’s update workflow uses the report to select accepted changes and signs the revised database with the local key. On a system using the standard report directory, identify the report you just reviewed and pass it to the update command:

sudo tripwire --update -r $(ls -t /var/lib/tripwire/report/*.twr | head -n 1)

Review the proposed changes carefully at the prompts, enter the local-key passphrase, and verify that the resulting database is present. If policy rules themselves must change, edit the administrator-controlled policy source, regenerate and sign the policy with the site key, test it, and document the new scope before accepting a new baseline. Never overwrite the baseline merely because it is inconvenient to investigate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After a package upgrade, do not assume every reported change belongs to that upgrade. Match files to the package transaction and deployment record, review unexpected objects separately, and retain the pre-update report. Baseline maintenance is an authorization step, not routine cleanup.

Common failures and fixes

Tripwire cannot find its configuration or database

Check that /etc/tripwire/tw.cfg and the database path recorded in it exist, that commands are run with sudo, and that the hostname used in the database filename has not changed. Use the active signed configuration as the authority rather than hard-coding a remembered path.

Passphrase or key errors

Confirm whether the operation needs the site key or local key. The site key is for configuration and policy signing; the local key is for the host database and reports. Verify file ownership and permissions, and retrieve the passphrase from the approved secret store. Do not replace keys casually: doing so breaks the trust chain and requires a controlled reconfiguration.

Every check reports many changes

Look for a recent package upgrade, deployment, hostname change, policy edit, or volatile directory that was included accidentally. Compare the report with change records. If the noise is policy-related, adjust the policy deliberately, sign it, and establish a new baseline only after the scope is correct.

No email or operational alert arrives

Tripwire can still create a local report even when delivery is not configured. Inspect the report directory, the signed configuration’s mail and report settings, the timer or cron logs, and the host’s mail relay or log pipeline. Test the complete alert path rather than assuming that a successful command reached an administrator.

The VPS hostname changes

The standard database and report names include the hostname. A rename or rebuild can therefore make an expected database appear missing even when the files are present under an older name. Check the active configuration and inventory before changing filenames. Treat a rebuilt host as a new trust decision and document which baseline belongs to it.

Operational practices that keep Tripwire useful

  • Keep site and local keys, passphrases, and baseline backups under separate administrator access controls.
  • Back up the baseline and reports off-host so an intruder cannot erase the history.
  • Review policy changes through the same approval process as firewall and SSH changes.
  • Record why volatile paths are excluded and revisit exclusions when services change.
  • Monitor scheduler failures, not only integrity differences.
  • Use centralized logs and independent monitoring because a host-based tool can be disabled from the host it watches.
  • Rebuild the baseline after a verified replacement or clean recovery, never after an unexplained incident merely to clear alerts.

Tripwire’s strength is narrow and valuable: it provides signed, repeatable evidence that selected filesystem state has drifted. Its effectiveness depends on a trusted starting point, a policy that covers the files that matter, protected keys and baselines, reliable scheduling, and disciplined human review.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I install Tripwire on Ubuntu?

On Ubuntu Noble, enable the Universe repository if your image does not already provide it, then run sudo apt update followed by sudo apt install tripwire. The Noble archive lists version 2.4.3.7-5. During setup, create separate strong passphrases for the site and local keys and store them in an administrator-controlled secret manager.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does tripwire --init do?

It reads the signed policy, measures the selected files, directories, and attributes, and creates a cryptographically signed database snapshot. This is the trust anchor used by later checks, so run it only after updates, hardening, and deployment are complete on a host you have reason to believe is clean.

Where are Tripwire reports stored?

The signed configuration controls the report path through REPORTFILE. A typical Ubuntu layout is /var/lib/tripwire/report, with names based on the hostname and date. Confirm the active value in /etc/tripwire/tw.cfg and inspect the directory rather than hard-coding an assumed filename.

How do I schedule Tripwire checks?

Use a root-owned systemd oneshot service and a daily timer, or an entry such as 17 3 * * * root /usr/sbin/tripwire --check in /etc/cron.d. Check the timer, service status, journal, and report directory after the first run. A schedule is useful only if its failures and reports are monitored.

What is the difference between the site key and local key?

The site key signs Tripwire’s configuration and policy. The local key signs the host-specific database and integrity reports. Protect both key files and both passphrases; losing or replacing a key without a controlled recovery plan breaks the trust chain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Tripwire detect network intrusions?

No. Tripwire evaluates policy-selected filesystem objects and attributes. It does not replace a firewall, SSH controls, patch management, network telemetry, centralized logging, or incident response. Use those controls to cover activity outside the filesystem view.

What should I do if the first check reports changes?

Do not immediately update the database. Determine whether each difference comes from a final deployment, package transaction, policy mistake, or unexplained activity. Preserve the report and correlate important changes with administrator actions, login history, sudo records, services, scheduled jobs, and centralized logs.

When is it safe to update the baseline?

Only after an authorized change is complete and verified. Review the report, accept only the documented objects through Tripwire’s update workflow, and retain the approval record. Never update merely to silence unexplained differences or after creating a baseline on a potentially compromised host.

The Bottom Line

Install Tripwire from Ubuntu’s repository, protect its site and local keys, define a policy that covers the VPS files that matter, and initialize the database only on a trusted system. Run tripwire --check daily, preserve reports off-host, investigate every difference, and update the baseline only for verified authorized changes. Tripwire is valuable filesystem evidence, not a replacement for hardening, logging, patching, or incident response.
