Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Short answer: your Microsoft account identifies you and unlocks eligible purchases, Realms, and supported content, but it is not a universal backup for every Minecraft world. A save can be local to one device, copied to a platform cloud, or stored on a Realm. Transfers therefore depend on the edition (Java or Bedrock), the device, and the save’s storage location. Java players join Java games; Bedrock players join Bedrock games—Java and Bedrock do not play together.
What a Microsoft account does—and does not—save
Signing in with the same Microsoft account can restore account-linked purchases and provide access to eligible Realms and Marketplace content on supported devices. It does not automatically copy every local single-player world to every device. Before changing hardware, determine where the particular world lives.

- Local-only: the world exists on one computer, console, phone, or tablet. Signing in elsewhere will not make it appear.
- Platform cloud save: a supported platform may upload the world, but upload status and online activity still matter.
- Realm: the world is hosted in a Realm slot and can be downloaded on another compatible device logged into the account.
On Xbox, Minecraft associates cloud saves with the Microsoft account. While you are online and signed in, newly created worlds are backed up, and a world created while offline is backed up the first time you play it online. A world you never play remains on the device until it is backed up. In Minecraft’s Manage Worlds view, labels distinguish cloud-synced, cloud-only, and local-only worlds; the same screen provides upload and download actions. Do not treat the presence of the same account as proof that a particular world is already in the cloud.
Is Minecraft account migration still available?
No. Mojang-to-Microsoft migration ended on December 18, 2023. Minecraft Help states that “The migration grace period concluded December 18, 2023,” and Support no longer handles migration-related requests.

An old Java single-player folder may still be on the original computer, but playing Java Edition requires purchasing Java Edition through a Microsoft account. A new Microsoft account does not inherit the old account’s entitlements or player identity automatically. In a multiplayer server or world, a new account enters as a new player at the default spawn with no previous inventory or progress.
If the old computer still contains a world, copy or back it up before changing installations. That preserves the world data, but it does not restore an account’s ownership history or the original multiplayer identity.

Java Edition single-player worlds are normally moved as files. Make a backup before copying or modifying anything.
Make a dated backup in Minecraft
- Open Java Edition and select Singleplayer.
- Select the world you want to preserve and choose Edit.
- Choose Make Backup. Minecraft creates a ZIP file whose title includes the backup date.
- Copy that ZIP to secure storage, such as an external drive or another computer.
Restore the world on the destination computer
- Install and start the same Java Edition release, or a release known to support the world. Close the game before replacing files.
- Copy the backup ZIP to the destination computer and unzip it. The extracted folder is the world folder.
- Place that folder in the destination Minecraft
savesdirectory. The usual locations are%APPDATA%.minecraftsaveson Windows and~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/saveson macOS. - Reopen Java Edition and check Singleplayer. The world should appear in the list.
If it does not appear, verify that you placed the world folder itself—not an extra folder containing it—inside saves. A backup made by a different account can still be copied as a file, but account ownership and multiplayer player data remain separate from the world folder.

How to transfer a Bedrock world with Realms
Realms is the practical cross-device route for Bedrock worlds when direct file access is unavailable. The source and destination devices must run current game versions, and you need an active Realms trial or paid subscription.
Upload from the original device
- Sign in to the Microsoft account that owns the Realm subscription.
- Open the Realm’s world-management screen and choose an empty slot, or choose the option to replace a slot’s world.
- Select the local Bedrock world and confirm the upload. Wait for the upload to finish before closing the game.
Download on the new device
- Sign in to the same Microsoft account on the destination device.
- Open the Realm and select the world slot containing the uploaded world.
- Choose Download World. Minecraft saves a copy to the destination device’s Worlds list.
The downloaded world is a local copy; subsequent play on one device does not silently merge changes from another local copy. Decide which copy is authoritative before making separate edits.
How to copy a Bedrock world from Android by USB
Minecraft’s direct file-copy instructions apply when Bedrock’s File Storage Location is set to External. They do not automatically apply to worlds stored in Application storage.
- In Bedrock’s storage settings, confirm that the world uses External storage.
- Connect the Android device to a computer with a data-capable USB cable whose connector fits the device.
- On the phone, choose File Transfer or MTP when the USB notification appears.
- On the computer, locate the Android storage and copy the
minecraftWorldsfolder to a safe location. - Keep the copied folder as your backup, or use Minecraft’s documented import route on the destination device.
If the world uses Application storage, use Realms transfer or the storage-specific procedure documented for that Android setup instead of assuming the visible minecraftWorlds folder contains it.

How to replace a Realm world without losing progress
Replacing a Realm slot can discard progress. Minecraft recommends downloading the current world before replacing it and warns that Realm backups are not retained indefinitely.
- Open the Realm’s world-management controls.
- Download the existing world you want to keep before selecting a replacement.
- Confirm that the downloaded copy appears among local worlds. On Java, Realm backups can be downloaded through the Realm’s World Backups controls into single-player worlds.
- Only then upload or select the new world for the Realm slot.
Each Realm lists three persistent world slots. A slot is not the same thing as three automatically synchronized local copies; download a copy whenever you need an independent archive.
Can Java and Bedrock players play together?
No. Java and Bedrock are separate editions with separate multiplayer compatibility. Match the edition before checking anything else:
| Host or world | Players who can join | Important limits |
|---|---|---|
| Bedrock world, server, Realm, or LAN game | Players using Bedrock on supported devices | Device cross-play is within Bedrock; it does not include Java players. |
| Java world, server, Realm, or LAN game | Players using Java Edition | Java Realms cross-play is listed for Windows, macOS, and Linux. |
The word “cross-platform” does not mean Java-to-Bedrock compatibility. It generally means multiple supported devices running the same edition.

What you need to join a friend’s world
Once editions match, check the remaining gates in this order:
- Current release: both players should use the latest compatible release rather than mixing incompatible versions.
- Connection: use a stable internet connection, or the same LAN where applicable. Java multiplayer also requires a computer that meets Java Edition’s specifications.
- Console service: online console multiplayer requires the applicable platform subscription—Xbox Game Pass Core or PlayStation Plus, and Nintendo Switch Online on Nintendo Switch.
- Microsoft account: console and mobile players need one for the relevant multiplayer features.
- Privacy and child permissions: a child account can be blocked by its multiplayer or communication settings even when the host is available.
- Realm invitation: joining a Realm requires an invitation from its host. The invite is separate from owning a subscription.
For PlayStation Bedrock cross-platform games or Realms, link a Microsoft account to the PlayStation Network account. Minecraft says one Microsoft account can be linked to one PSN account at a time, and Marketplace purchase access has platform-specific limits.

The following figures are recurring US prices and concurrent-player allowances displayed on Minecraft’s product page on October 13, 2026. Local pricing, taxes, availability, and future rates can differ.
| Plan | Recurring US price | Concurrent allowance | Edition and notable details |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bedrock Realms | USD $3.99/month | Host plus 2 players | Bedrock; three persistent world slots and backups listed. |
| Bedrock Realms Plus | USD $7.99/month | Host plus 10 players | Bedrock; adds access to the Marketplace Pass catalog, with three persistent slots and backups listed. |
| Java Realms | USD $7.99/month | Host plus 10 players | Java; three persistent world slots and backups listed. |
Realms is useful when a world should remain available while the owner is offline, when several people need a shared persistent world, or when Bedrock transfer between devices is easier through an upload and download. Choose by edition first, then player allowance, platform requirements, region-specific price, backups, slots, and any included catalog content. Invited friends’ ability to play without purchasing their own Realm depends on the applicable plan terms; the subscription owner’s service remains separate from membership in the world.

Why can’t I join my friend’s Minecraft world?
You are using different editions
Confirm whether each player launched Java or Bedrock. A Java client cannot join a Bedrock host, and a Bedrock client cannot join a Java host. Install or launch the matching edition before changing network settings.
The world is not actually online
A local single-player world is not an always-on server. The host must open the world for LAN or use an online service that supports the edition. A Realm must be active and the joining player must be invited.
A console subscription or account permission is missing
Check Game Pass Core, PlayStation Plus, or Nintendo Switch Online as applicable. Then inspect Microsoft account privacy and child-account multiplayer permissions. These are separate checks; satisfying one does not satisfy the others.
The console accounts are not linked correctly
On PlayStation, verify that the intended Microsoft account is linked to the PSN account. Because Minecraft limits one Microsoft account per PSN account at a time, signing into a different Microsoft account may not produce the expected cross-platform access or purchases.
The world or Realm is not on the device you are checking
On Xbox, inspect Manage Worlds for local-only, cloud-synced, and cloud-only labels, then use the appropriate upload or download action. On other devices, confirm that the transfer completed and that you are viewing the correct Worlds list rather than expecting an account login to recreate a local save.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Versions or connectivity differ
Update both installations to the latest compatible release, verify a stable connection, and retry. For LAN play, confirm both devices are on the same local network. Java hosts should also verify that the computer meets the game’s requirements.
A safe decision checklist before changing devices
- Write down the edition, device, and world name.
- Check whether the world is local, cloud-synced, or in a Realm.
- Make an independent backup: Java ZIP, Xbox cloud verification, Bedrock Realm download, or Android External-storage copy.
- Confirm the destination uses the same edition and a compatible current release.
- Sign in with the intended Microsoft account, without assuming that sign-in alone transfers local files.
- Open the destination Worlds or Singleplayer list and verify the copy before deleting or replacing anything on the source.
This sequence protects the file, the account access, and the multiplayer identity as three separate things—because Minecraft treats them separately.
