Minecraft says account sales violate its Terms of Service, treats the person who originally created the account as its owner, and may not support licenses obtained from resellers or third-party sites. The safe alternative is to create a Microsoft account you control and purchase Minecraft through Minecraft.net or the Microsoft Store.
What is a Minecraft alt?
An “alt” is player slang for an alternate account. It is not an official Minecraft product category. A legitimate alt can be a separate Microsoft account that you create and use for testing, privacy, household separation, or another player. In marketplace listings, however, “alt” usually means an already-created account being transferred to a buyer.
That distinction matters. A Minecraft account, Microsoft account, license, username, gamertag, cape, and server profile are different things:
- Microsoft account: The account used to sign in and hold Minecraft access.
- Minecraft license: Your entitlement to use the purchased game on supported platforms.
- Username or gamertag: A public player identifier, not proof that you own a transferable license.
- Cape or cosmetic: An account-associated item whose transferability is not guaranteed.
- Server profile: A server operator’s record, such as a rank or whitelist entry; it is not a Minecraft license.
Are Minecraft accounts for sale legitimate?
No, not when the sale involves transferring an existing Minecraft or Microsoft account. Minecraft’s official support guidance says buying and selling Minecraft accounts violates its Terms of Service. It also states that the person who originally created the account is considered its owner and that Minecraft cannot provide support for licenses purchased from resellers or third-party sites. This remains true if the seller claims to be the original owner, offers a rare username, includes capes or cosmetics, or promises a replacement account. The same problem applies when the deal happens through a friend, Discord, social media, or a marketplace. Minecraft specifically advises users not to buy accounts from third-party sellers, social media, or friends.
Microsoft’s broader rules also describe digital goods as licensed rather than sold and generally prohibit transferring or reselling them. Its Services Agreement restricts transferring software, licenses, or rights to access services unless Microsoft authorizes it. Xbox Community Standards prohibit giving another person access to a Microsoft account and prohibit selling an account or gamertag.
This is best described as a breach of platform and contractual rules—not automatically as a criminal offense everywhere. Criminal or civil consequences depend on the jurisdiction and facts, especially if fraud, stolen payment methods, or compromised accounts are involved.
Why account listings look attractive
Listings commonly advertise “cheap Minecraft accounts,” “full access,” “unbanned” accounts, short or “OG” usernames, old capes, migration history, server ranks, whitelists, or “lifetime warranties.” These features may sound cheaper or more convenient than buying Minecraft again, but none proves legitimate ownership or guarantees lasting access.

“Full access” is not a standardized ownership term. It might mean only a username and password, access to an inbox that the seller still controls, a session token, or credentials tied to recovery information and other Microsoft services. Changing the password does not make a transferred account legitimately yours.
What can go wrong after buying an alt?
The original creator may recover it
Minecraft identifies the initial account creator as the owner for support purposes. A seller or earlier account holder may therefore have information that gives them an advantage in an ownership or recovery dispute. You could lose access even after changing the password.
The seller may reclaim it
A seller can provide working credentials temporarily and later change security information or stop responding. A warranty promise is not a guarantee that the seller will remain honest, solvent, or able to control the account.
Phishing and malware
Some offers are designed to collect Microsoft passwords, payment details, or authentication codes. Microsoft describes phishing as fraudulent attempts to obtain sensitive information for account access or financial gain. Treat requests to use a custom launcher, “verification” program, browser extension, executable, or unofficial login page as high-risk. Never enter Microsoft credentials or authentication codes into an untrusted service.

Bans and enforcement history
A purchased account may already be banned or may carry a history that creates future enforcement risk. Minecraft says bans are connected to the unique ID of the Microsoft account rather than merely its gamertag or profile name. Changing a username therefore does not erase the account’s underlying history. Do not assume that buying an account provides a way around a server or platform ban.
Lost support
If the license came through a reseller or third-party account seller, Minecraft may refuse support. This is particularly important when the account is locked, compromised, banned, or later recovered by someone else.
Payment and privacy problems
Buyers can face fake escrow services, disappearing sellers, fraudulent gift cards, stolen payment methods, irreversible cryptocurrency payments, and warranty exclusions that make refunds impractical. A transferred account may also expose the seller’s old email address, recovery phone, purchase history, Xbox information, messages, connected applications, or saved payment methods. The seller may retain access to information you add later.
Account sale versus a Minecraft key or gift card
A valid, unused product code or gift card is different from buying an already-created account: the code can be redeemed to the recipient’s own Microsoft account. Minecraft’s official redemption page requires an active Microsoft account and explains that Java & Bedrock Edition for PC codes are redeemed to that account.

However, an unknown seller’s code is not automatically safe. Gray-market codes may be region-restricted, already redeemed, fraudulently obtained, revoked, or unsupported. Use Minecraft, Microsoft, or an authorized retailer, and redeem the code directly to the account that should own the game.
The safe way to get a second Minecraft account
- Create a new Microsoft account that you personally control, or use the intended player’s existing account.
- Sign in to the official Minecraft purchase page or Microsoft Store with that account.
- Purchase the product for the correct platform and edition.
- Download the official Minecraft Launcher from Minecraft.net or the Microsoft Store.
- Sign in to the Launcher with the same Microsoft account used for the purchase.
- Enable multifactor authentication, keep recovery information current, and never share passwords, recovery codes, or authentication prompts.
For PC, Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition includes both Java and Bedrock Editions. The purchase is associated with the purchasing Microsoft account; it is not permission to distribute that account to other people. Prices vary by region, platform, taxes, bundles, and promotions, so check the live official checkout page rather than relying on an old listing.

Java Edition supports Windows, macOS, and Linux. Bedrock is available on Windows and on supported console and mobile platforms. Their multiplayer ecosystems and cross-play are different: Java players generally play with Java players, while Bedrock cross-play applies within the Bedrock ecosystem on supported devices. Check the official PC product page before buying.
All current players need a Microsoft account for Minecraft access. Old advice about buying or migrating Mojang accounts is outdated: the migration grace period ended on December 18, 2023, according to Minecraft’s migration information.

Red flags in Minecraft alt listings
- “No recovery access needed” or “change the password after purchase.”
- Promises such as “unbannable,” “lifetime,” or “guaranteed forever.”
- Requests for your primary Microsoft password or authentication code.
- Login through a non-Microsoft website or custom launcher.
- Instructions to disable multifactor authentication.
- Payment only by cryptocurrency, gift cards, or irreversible transfers.
- Terms such as “stolen,” “leaked,” “semi-full access,” or “migration.”
- Bulk account inventories or prices far below official pricing.
- Screenshots offered instead of first-party purchase evidence.
Even a listing without these warning signs is still an unsupported account transfer.
If you already bought an account
- Stop using the seller’s website, launcher, or credential tool.
- If you entered a Microsoft password on a third-party page, change it immediately through the official Microsoft account portal. Do not reuse that password elsewhere.
- Enable multifactor authentication and review recent sign-in activity.
- Remove unfamiliar devices, sessions, recovery methods, aliases, forwarding rules, and connected applications.
- Contact your payment provider promptly about suspected fraud, following its current dispute rules. Do not assume a refund is guaranteed.
- Report suspected stolen accounts or account sellers to Minecraft Support, including screenshots where appropriate.
Do not try to seize or retain someone else’s email, recovery information, or account by using private data supplied by the seller. If the account is banned, use official support and appeal procedures where available; a third-party purchase does not guarantee restoration.
Legitimate reasons to use a second account
Separate accounts can be appropriate for different household users, content creation, privacy separation, or server administration and testing. For testing, use separately purchased accounts controlled by the administrator, follow the server’s rules, and disclose testing accounts to staff where appropriate.
Do not use alternate accounts to evade bans, bypass queues or restrictions, manipulate votes, inflate player counts, cheat, harass users, or impersonate others. A server may impose stricter rules than Minecraft’s platform policies.

There is no trustworthy marketplace shortcut to a legitimate Minecraft alt. A transferred account can be reclaimed, banned, compromised, or left without official support. Create a Microsoft account for the intended player and buy Minecraft through the official store; that gives the account holder clear ownership and a supported path for installation and recovery.
