Where amethyst geodes generate
Geodes generate underground in newly generated chunks of the Overworld. Mojang Studios’ Bedrock 1.17 release notes, published in 2021, describe them as structures that can appear anywhere underground when new Overworld terrain is created. They are not a Nether or End structure, and explored chunks are not regenerated to add a geode later, so searching fresh terrain is the dependable strategy. If you have already mined extensively around your base, travel beyond the explored edge and let new terrain generate before beginning a serious search.
Read the geode from outside in
A complete geode has three recognizable layers:
- Smooth basalt: the hard outer shell. It can be several blocks thick and may be the first sign that you have hit a geode while mining.
- Calcite: a bright white layer directly inside the basalt.
- Amethyst interior: amethyst blocks, ordinary amethyst, and budding amethyst occupy the inner cavity.
The shell can intersect caves, ravines or abandoned mine workings, so you may see only a partial wall at first. Once you break through smooth basalt and calcite, slow down. The interior contains the budding blocks that make the geode renewable, and careless mining can destroy the only source you have found.

A practical search route
Explore caves, branch mines and other underground spaces in terrain your world has not generated before. When you see smooth basalt, expose enough of the surrounding shell to confirm the structure, then open a safe entrance. A water-filled cavity may hide the purple interior behind a thin shell, while a geode exposed to a cave can have missing sections; neither situation changes the need to protect budding blocks.
Mark the coordinates before taking anything. Place a sign at the entrance, record the location in a book or map, and build a simple path if the site is far from your base. A geode is a long-term resource site rather than a one-time ore pocket. Returning to one known location is more reliable than repeatedly searching for a new structure every time you need shards.

The four growth stages
Amethyst clusters grow from budding amethyst in four visual stages:
- Small amethyst bud
- Medium amethyst bud
- Large amethyst bud
- Amethyst cluster
A bud starts growing only from a face of budding amethyst that is exposed to air or a water source. Every side that you leave open is a potential growth face. Blocks, opaque decorations and other obstructions prevent growth on the covered side. When planning the cavity, look at each face of every budding block rather than clearing only the floor. A source block against a wall may still grow on its other exposed sides.
Water can remain beside a budding block as the required open medium, but do not casually replace a growth face with solid blocks, storage, glass or decorative details. Clear sight lines around the source blocks first, then add walkways outside the growth area. This arrangement gives you access without sacrificing future output.
Budding amethyst is the renewable infrastructure
Ordinary amethyst blocks and mature clusters are harvestable materials. Budding amethyst is different: it is the block that continues producing buds. Do not mine it, move it or use it as building material.

Budding amethyst cannot be collected with Silk Touch. Breaking it destroys the block, and a piston moving it also destroys it, even when the piston is operated carefully or the block is otherwise protected. Mojang developer Cory Scheviak explained that this restriction was intentional: players must return to the geode where the budding blocks generate instead of relocating a complete farm elsewhere. Silk Touch is therefore useful for collecting a visible bud or cluster, not for rescuing the source that creates them.
How to identify the source safely
Before mining any purple-looking block, inspect its face pattern. A budding block is part of the geode wall and has the characteristic cross-shaped texture associated with growth. Clusters are attached growths that project into the cavity and visibly occupy one of the four stages. If the block is flush with the wall and appears to be the growth source, leave it in place. When uncertain, remove loose surrounding blocks instead of testing it with a pickaxe.
How to get amethyst shards
Harvest a mature cluster
Wait until a bud reaches the fourth stage, the full amethyst cluster, then mine that cluster with a pickaxe. Mojang Studios’ 2021 Bedrock release notes specify a normal drop of four amethyst shards from a fully grown cluster mined with a pickaxe. Fortune can increase the amount, making a Fortune pickaxe the best choice when your goal is raw shard quantity.
Breaking the cluster by hand, with a piston, or by another non-pickaxe method gives two shards. Silk Touch instead collects the amethyst growth block itself at any growth stage, allowing you to move a bud or cluster for display or later placement. Silk Touch does not rescue budding amethyst, and using it on a mature cluster gives you the block rather than the four-shard payout.

Do not confuse clusters with budding blocks
Clusters are attached growths and can be harvested. Budding amethyst has the distinctive growth function and must remain in place. If you are unsure which block you are looking at, do not break it: expose the surrounding cavity and observe whether buds are attached to its faces. Harvest only the visible, fully grown cluster. Small, medium and large buds are still using the source block’s growth capacity and should be left to advance.
Choosing a tool for each trip
Keep two tools if your storage allows it. A Fortune pickaxe is for production runs when you want the largest shard haul. A Silk Touch pickaxe is for collecting a cluster or intermediate bud as a decorative block, not for farming shards. If you carry only one pickaxe, an ordinary pickaxe still gives the full four-shard baseline from a mature cluster; the important distinction is using a pickaxe at all rather than breaking the cluster by hand.

Build a renewable amethyst harvesting site
The most sustainable “farm” is a preserved geode that you revisit. Minecraft does not provide a portable budding-amethyst block, so the geode itself is the farm. The goal is not to force every face into a dense machine but to keep each source exposed, make mature clusters easy to reach, and return when the area is being simulated.
- Record the location. Write down the geode’s coordinates or mark the entrance with a conspicuous route from your base. A sign and a safe tunnel prevent you from losing the site after a long mining trip.
- Secure the cavity. Light nearby passages and block dangerous openings so harvesting is safe. Keep the budding blocks intact while removing only loose material that obstructs access. Avoid placing storage or walls directly against a growth face.
- Expose growth faces. Leave air or water directly beside the faces from which buds grow. Do not fill those spaces with walls, storage, torches or decorative blocks. Check the top, bottom and side faces rather than assuming only horizontal faces matter.
- Create walkways. A narrow path around the budding blocks lets you reach every mature cluster without standing on or mining the source blocks. Use slabs or ordinary blocks outside the growth area if you need safer footing.
- Harvest only the fourth stage. Use a pickaxe on full clusters. Leave small, medium and large buds in place so they can continue toward maturity.
- Use Fortune when quantity matters. Carry a Fortune pickaxe for production runs and a Silk Touch pickaxe only when you specifically want to collect growth blocks for display.
- Return periodically. Growth is governed by random ticks, simulation distance and edition-specific behavior, so no universal hourly yield can be promised. A farm may appear idle while the relevant chunks are not being simulated.
Farm problems and fixes
- No new buds: inspect every growth face for an adjacent block. Remove the obstruction or replace it with air or a water source.
- The source disappeared: a budding block was mined or moved. It cannot be recovered; locate another geode and preserve its budding blocks.
- Too few shards: make sure clusters are fully grown before harvesting and use a pickaxe. Fortune improves the yield compared with an unenchanted pickaxe.
- Clusters seem frozen: verify that the area is within the world’s active simulation range. Growth does not run at a guaranteed real-time rate while the chunks are inactive.
- Access is awkward: widen the cavity around, not through, the source blocks. A small loop walkway is safer than repeatedly digging into the wall and risking accidental damage.
- You keep harvesting the wrong block: stop and compare the attached growth with the wall block. Harvestable clusters project into the room; budding amethyst remains part of the generating wall.

Block of amethyst: decoration and sound
Combine four shards to make one block of amethyst. This is the straightforward choice for floors, walls, accents and other builds that need the geode’s purple visual style. Because each block consumes four shards, large decorative projects compete directly with utility recipes. If you plan a substantial build, count the required blocks first: one block is one four-shard bundle, so a dozen blocks consumes 48 shards before any other crafting.

Place one amethyst shard with two copper ingots to craft a spyglass. It is the shard-efficient option when you want to inspect distant terrain, locate landmarks or check an area without walking there first. The recipe consumes only one shard, so a small initial harvest is enough for personal use. This can be a sensible first craft when you have found one geode but have not yet established a dependable return route.
Tinted glass: transparent construction without light
Surround one glass block with four amethyst shards to craft tinted glass. The finished block remains visually transparent, allowing you to see through it, but it does not allow light to pass. That combination is useful for mob farms, observation windows and builds where you need a controlled light level without a completely opaque wall. Tinted glass is especially valuable when you need to inspect an enclosed space while keeping its lighting conditions unchanged.
Additional shard uses in current versions
Current Java and Bedrock item references list several uses beyond the original geode recipes. Exact availability can vary by edition and game version, so check the recipe book and release notes for the version your world runs. A recipe shown in one edition should not be assumed to exist identically in another.
Calibrated sculk sensors
Amethyst is listed as a crafting ingredient for calibrated sculk sensors. These redstone components are designed for more selective vibration detection than ordinary sculk sensors, making shards relevant to vibration-driven automation and alarm systems. If your project does not use vibration logic, this is a lower priority than a spyglass or tinted glass.

Armor trims
Amethyst shards are listed as a material for armor trims. This is a visual customization use rather than an armor-stat upgrade; it lets you apply an amethyst-themed material appearance when the relevant smithing-template system is available in your edition and version. Treat trim materials as a cosmetic sink: preserve enough shards for tools and building before committing a large collection to matching armor sets.
Allay duplication
An amethyst shard can duplicate an allay when the allay is dancing to an active jukebox. The Minecraft Wiki archive, updated in 2026, records a five-minute cooldown after duplication. Because this interaction is version-sensitive, confirm the behavior in your game’s recipe and advancement interfaces before spending a limited supply. Keep the allay near the active jukebox during the interaction and plan around the cooldown rather than expecting immediate repeated duplication.

Preserve the geode before committing shards to a large project. A renewable cluster supply is valuable, but only while its budding blocks survive. If you have found one geode and have not located another, prioritize a spyglass or a small amount of tinted glass over converting every shard into decorative blocks. Once you have a safe route and several producing faces, reserve separate stacks for construction, utility and version-specific features so one project does not consume the material needed for another.
Simple budgeting examples
For a first utility kit, one shard and two copper ingots produce a spyglass, leaving the rest of your first harvest available. For one tinted-glass block, set aside four shards and one glass block. For one amethyst building block, also set aside four shards, but remember that the building block and tinted glass compete for the same four-shard amount. These fixed recipe costs make a written shopping list useful before a return trip.

Where is the safest place to search for an amethyst geode?
Search underground in newly generated Overworld chunks. Caves and branch mines can expose smooth basalt, the geode’s outer shell. Once you find one, record its coordinates because existing chunks do not regenerate to add new geodes.
Can I move budding amethyst with Silk Touch or a piston?
No. Breaking budding amethyst destroys it, and moving it with a piston also destroys it. Silk Touch can collect a bud or cluster, but it cannot preserve the budding source block. Leave every budding block in its original geode.

How many shards does a full cluster drop?

What is the difference between a bud and a cluster?

How do I make tinted glass?

Can I build an automatic amethyst farm away from the geode?
