The Minecraft error org.lwjgl.LWJGLException: Pixel format not accelerated means the game could not create its OpenGL window because Windows did not provide an accelerated pixel format. It occurs before the Minecraft window appears, usually in the graphics-driver or hardware-acceleration layer used by legacy LWJGL builds.
Start by recording the Minecraft, LWJGL, Windows and GPU versions from the crash report. Then make sure Minecraft is using the correct GPU, install the current driver from the GPU manufacturer, restart Windows, and repair the game installation. If every legacy version fails, check whether the computer can expose hardware-accelerated OpenGL at all; replacing hardware is a last, system-specific decision rather than a universal fix.

What “Pixel format not accelerated” means
LWJGL (Lightweight Java Game Library) is the native layer that lets older Minecraft Java Edition builds request an OpenGL window from Windows. During startup, LWJGL asks Windows for a pixel format suitable for an accelerated OpenGL context. The exception is raised when that request fails, so Minecraft never reaches the normal game window.
Mojang crash records show the failure in org.lwjgl.opengl.WindowsPeerInfo.nChoosePixelFormat and WindowsPeerInfo.choosePixelFormat. “Pixel format” here does not mean your monitor resolution, fullscreen setting or the number of pixels in a texture. It is a Windows graphics capability selected while the OpenGL context is being created.

The most important diagnostic direction is therefore the graphics path: a bad, missing or incorrect video-card driver, disabled hardware acceleration, or hardware and operating-system combination that cannot expose an accelerated OpenGL format. Corrupted game files can also contribute, which is why repairing the installation is part of the sequence rather than an afterthought.
Which Minecraft versions are in scope?
This exact wording is associated with legacy LWJGL 2 startup paths. The documented cases include Minecraft Java Edition 1.12.2 using LWJGL 2.9.4 and a Mojang report created for 1.17.1 on August 19, 2021. The 1.17.1 report was recorded as a duplicate of Mojang’s older “Pixel Format Not Accelerated” and bad-video-card-driver issue.

The change to GLFW is a support-forum observation, not a promise that every installation follows one identical compatibility boundary. Always use the crash report’s recorded library and game version as the authority for your machine.
Before changing files: record the evidence
Do this first so you can tell whether a change helped and so a support technician can identify the failing layer.

- Save the complete crash report. In the launcher or the
.minecraftfolder, copy the newest report to a separate folder. Keep the stack-trace lines containingWindowsPeerInfo, the Minecraft version, LWJGL version, Java runtime and operating-system version. - Identify the GPU. Press
Win, search for Device Manager, open Display adapters, and note every adapter listed. On a laptop there may be both integrated and discrete graphics. - Confirm Windows details. Press
Win+R, enterdxdiag, and record the Windows edition and display-driver information. Save the report if you need to compare versions after an update. - Write down the profile you are launching. Include the exact release, mod loader if any, and whether the failure occurs in one profile or every profile. Do not delete the only copy of a world while testing.
Fix the graphics path first
1. Make Minecraft use the intended adapter
On systems with integrated and discrete graphics, the launcher can start Java on the lower-power adapter while the display is connected to the other one. In Windows 11 or Windows 10, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics. Add the Java executable used by the Minecraft profile if it is not listed, select it, choose Options, select High performance, and save. The label and location can vary slightly by Windows edition.
Restart the launcher and test the same profile. If your graphics vendor supplies a control panel with per-application GPU choices, set the same Java executable there rather than selecting a different executable by guesswork. The crash report’s Java path helps you identify the process that actually starts the game.
2. Install the current driver from the GPU manufacturer
Use the support page for the manufacturer of the adapter shown in Device Manager. Select the exact GPU and Windows version, install the current driver package, and restart Windows when prompted. A generic display driver supplied during setup may provide basic desktop output without exposing the OpenGL acceleration that LWJGL requests.
Do not choose a driver solely because its version number is newer or because it belongs to a different adapter in the same computer. If the installer offers a clean-install option and you are correcting a damaged driver, follow the vendor’s documented procedure and keep the crash report before removing anything.

3. Check that the adapter is enabled
In Device Manager > Display adapters, an adapter with a down-arrow, warning icon or error status needs attention before Minecraft can use it. Open Properties and read the device status. Re-enable a deliberately disabled adapter, but do not disable one merely to make the list look simpler: laptops often need both adapters for normal display switching.
After correcting a device-status error, reboot and test an unmodified Minecraft profile. If Windows repeatedly falls back to a basic display driver after reboot, solve that driver-installation problem before changing Minecraft files.

4. Update the launcher and game files
Install updates offered by the official Minecraft launcher and by Windows for the edition you are running. A damaged native library or incomplete update can prevent the OpenGL startup code from loading correctly. Test the same release again after the update rather than changing several versions at once.
5. Remove temporary files safely
Close Minecraft and the launcher. Press Win+R, enter %temp%, and remove files Windows allows you to remove; skip files that are in use. You can also use Settings > System > Storage > Temporary files to review Windows’ cleanup categories. Do not select a category that contains your saves or screenshots unless you have verified its contents and made a backup.

6. Reset or repair the Windows app when the option exists
For a launcher installed as a Windows app, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the launcher, choose Advanced options, and look for Repair or Reset. Repair attempts to correct the installation without removing personal data; Reset can clear app data and may require you to sign in again. Not every Java Edition launcher or Windows release exposes these buttons, so do not treat their absence as a fault.
Back up worlds and any custom resource packs before a reset. If the launcher is a traditional desktop program, use its own repair or reinstall process instead of deleting the entire .minecraft directory blindly.
7. Test a clean, unmodded profile
Create or select a vanilla profile for the same release and launch it without mods, shaders or third-party wrappers. A clean profile distinguishes a graphics-context failure from a modified installation that replaced native libraries. If vanilla works but one modded profile fails, restore that profile’s files from a backup or reinstall its loader and mods one at a time.
If both vanilla and modded profiles fail with the same stack trace, keep the focus on the adapter, driver and operating-system graphics path.

Check hardware and operating-system capability
If every legacy profile fails after a correct manufacturer driver installation, verify that the computer can provide hardware-accelerated OpenGL rather than assuming Minecraft itself is broken. Very old adapters, unsupported Windows driver combinations and hardware that only exposes basic software rendering can all fail at the pixel-format request.
- Compare the GPU model and driver status in Device Manager with the model in the crash report and
dxdiag. - Check the GPU manufacturer’s stated Windows support for that exact adapter. A driver intended for another Windows edition may install incompletely or omit required acceleration.
- Test more than one legacy Minecraft release. If all of them fail before a window appears, the common graphics layer is more suspect than one damaged profile.
- If the machine cannot expose accelerated OpenGL under a supported driver, a replacement GPU may be necessary, but the correct part depends on the computer’s power supply, slot, firmware, case and operating-system support. Treat it as a hardware-planning decision, not the default fix for this message.
Common pitfalls and what they tell you
Updating Java instead of the display driver
The exception is thrown by LWJGL while Windows selects an OpenGL pixel format. Changing the Java runtime can be relevant when the crash report identifies an incompatible runtime, but it does not replace a functioning display driver. Record the runtime version, then correct the graphics path first.
Changing resolution or fullscreen settings
Those settings are applied after a window can be created. Because this failure occurs before that point, lowering resolution, editing video options or switching fullscreen modes is unlikely to address the underlying pixel-format request.
Installing a random driver package
There is no single driver that fixes every machine. The correct package depends on the GPU model, Windows version and whether the computer uses integrated, discrete or switchable graphics. A mismatched package can leave the system on a basic driver and make diagnosis harder.
Deleting the whole game directory
A full deletion can remove saves, screenshots, resource packs and configuration. Back up those folders first, then repair or reset the launcher in the least destructive way available.

A successful driver or installation change may produce a different message rather than an immediate launch. That is useful evidence: the pixel-format stage may now be passing and the next failure may concern Java, a mod, a missing library or a different graphics API. Keep the new crash report and troubleshoot its first reported exception instead of returning to the original text.
Conversely, if the exact WindowsPeerInfo.nChoosePixelFormat stack trace returns on every clean profile, the repeated result points back to the adapter, driver or acceleration capability. Provide support with the saved crash report, GPU model, Windows edition, driver version, Minecraft release and the steps already completed.
