Armor trims are cosmetic patterns for player armor. Find an armor-trim Smithing Template, duplicate it with 7 Diamonds and its matching duplication material, then combine the template with armor and a trim material at a Smithing Table. The template selects the pattern; the third ingredient selects the color.
In the current vanilla versions covered by this guide, there are 18 armor-trim patterns and 11 trim materials. Trims do not increase armor, durability, enchantments, or any other combat statistic. Java and Bedrock have slightly different version histories, loot details, and duplication inputs, so older 1.20-only guides may be incomplete. The core mechanics are documented in Mojang’s Java 1.20 notes and the Java 1.21 notes.

- Pattern: supplied by the Smithing Template.
- Color: supplied by the trim-material item.

- Important warning: a Smithing Template is consumed every time it is used.
What armor trims do
An armor trim adds a decorative design to a compatible armor piece. It does not create a stronger version of the item and is not an enchantment. A trimmed Diamond Chestplate has the same armor points, toughness, durability, enchantments, and combat behavior as the same chestplate without a trim.

Current vanilla trimming is intended for the four player armor slots: helmets, chestplates, leggings, and boots. Leather armor is supported in current versions, and Copper Helmet, Copper Chestplate, Copper Leggings, and Copper Boots are supported in the post-Copper Age versions covered here. Horse armor, wolf armor, shields, and Elytra are separate equipment systems; do not assume that they accept ordinary armor trims.
Templates are consumed when applied. If you want to decorate a four-piece set with one pattern, you normally need four copies of that template. Duplicate the template before using the original on your first armor piece.
How to apply an armor trim
What you need
- One Smithing Table.
- One compatible armor piece: helmet, chestplate, leggings, or boots.
- One armor-trim Smithing Template.
- One accepted trim-material item.
A Smithing Table is crafted from 2 Iron Ingots and 4 Planks. It can also be found as a toolsmith villager workstation. The modern Smithing Table interface uses three input slots, as described in Mojang’s Smithing Template and armor-trim notes.
Recommended Free Tools
Step-by-step procedure
- Open the Smithing Table.
- Place the armor-trim template in the template slot.
- Place the helmet, chestplate, leggings, or boots in the armor slot.
- Place the desired trim material in the ingredient slot.
- Check the armor preview to confirm the pattern and color.
- Take the trimmed armor from the output slot.
The finished item retains its enchantments, custom name, and normal armor properties. Only its appearance has changed. The preview is more reliable than the generic inventory icon: the original trim implementation notes that a template’s small icon does not fully represent how its pattern appears on every armor piece.
Why the Smithing Table shows no result
- Wrong template: a Netherite Upgrade template is not an armor-trim template.
- Unsupported armor: horse armor, wolf armor, shields, and Elytra are not ordinary player armor-trim targets.
- Wrong third ingredient: the material must be one of the 11 accepted trim materials.
- Edition-specific recipe issue: a duplication material accepted in Bedrock may not be accepted in Java. Duplication inputs are listed below.
- Incorrect expectation: there is no defensive or offensive upgrade to display. Trims are cosmetic.
If the template disappears after a successful application, that is normal. Smithing Templates are single-use items unless you duplicate them first.
How to duplicate an armor-trim template
Once you have found one copy, every armor-trim template can be duplicated at a Crafting Table. The recipe returns 2 copies, so using one existing template produces a net gain of one.
Universal duplication recipe
Diamond Template Diamond
Diamond Material Diamond
Diamond Diamond Diamond
The recipe requires:
- 1 existing Smithing Template.
- 7 Diamonds.
- 1 matching duplication material for that template.
The matching material is not necessarily the material you plan to use as the trim color. For example, a Silence Template is duplicated with Cobbled Deepslate, but it can be applied with Gold, Amethyst, Diamond, Resin Brick, or any other accepted trim material.

Duplication materials for every template
| Template | Java duplication material | Bedrock-specific alternatives or notes |
|---|---|---|
| Netherite Upgrade | Netherrack | Not an armor trim, but it uses the same Smithing Template system. |
| Sentry | Cobblestone | — |
| Vex | Cobblestone | — |
| Coast | Cobblestone | — |
| Wild | Mossy Cobblestone | — |
| Dune | Sandstone | Bedrock also accepts Smooth Sandstone, Cut Sandstone, and Chiseled Sandstone. |
| Wayfinder | Terracotta | — |
| Raiser | Terracotta | — |
| Shaper | Terracotta | — |
| Host | Terracotta | — |
| Ward | Cobbled Deepslate | — |
| Silence | Cobbled Deepslate | — |
| Tide | Prismarine | Bedrock also accepts Prismarine Bricks and Dark Prismarine. |
| Snout | Blackstone | — |
| Eye | End Stone | — |
| Spire | Purpur Block | Bedrock also accepts Purpur Pillar. |
| Rib | Netherrack | — |
| Bolt | Block of Copper | Bedrock also accepts Waxed Block of Copper. |
| Flow | Breeze Rod | The only armor-trim template duplicated with an item instead of a block. |
The extra Dune, Tide, Spire, and Bolt inputs are Bedrock-specific qualifications. On Java, use the material in the middle column. The complete template list and duplication rules are also tracked in the Armor Trim reference.
Every armor trim and where to find it
The 18 patterns come from structures, mobs, archaeology, and Trial Chamber vaults. The table uses approximate current loot information where it is useful, but no single percentage applies to every edition or every chest. Java and Bedrock can use different loot tables; chest type, vault type, game version, and whether the number is measured per chest or per structure all matter. Mojang’s release notes establish the acquisition routes, while detailed loot-table data is maintained in technical references such as the Minecraft Wiki loot tables.
Where no number is shown, the source route is definitive but the chance is best treated as version- and container-dependent rather than as a universal rate.
| Pattern | Where to find it | Exact acquisition method | Approximate current loot chance | Duplication material | Survival hurdle |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Overworld structures | |||||
| Sentry | Pillager Outpost | Loot an Outpost chest. | About 25% per relevant chest in commonly cited current data. | Cobblestone | Low to medium; locating an outpost is the main task. |
| Dune | Desert Pyramid | Loot a desert temple chest. | Varies by edition and loot-table version. | Sandstone | Low to medium; watch for the TNT trap. |
| Coast | Shipwreck | Loot a shipwreck chest. Current loot data can generate templates in stacks of two. | About 16.7% per relevant chest in commonly cited data. | Cobblestone | Low to medium; shipwrecks are common but partly submerged. |
| Wild | Jungle Temple | Loot a jungle-temple chest. | About 33.3% per relevant chest in commonly cited data. | Mossy Cobblestone | Medium; jungles and temple traps slow the search. |
| Vex | Woodland Mansion | Loot an eligible mansion chest. | About 50% per eligible chest in commonly cited data, but mansions are difficult to locate. | Cobblestone | High; the structure is rare and dangerous. |
| Ancient City and ocean content | |||||
| Tide | Elder Guardian | Defeat an Elder Guardian. Tide is an Elder Guardian drop, not an ordinary Ocean Monument chest item. | Edition- and version-dependent; no universal percentage is given here. | Prismarine | High; prepare for Mining Fatigue and underwater combat. |
| Ward | Ancient City | Search Ancient City chests. | About 5% per chest in commonly cited data. | Cobbled Deepslate | High; the Deep Dark requires careful movement around sculk. |
| Silence | Ancient City | Search Ancient City chests. | About 1.2% per chest in commonly cited data; commonly cited as the rarest current template by chest-generation chance. | Cobbled Deepslate | Very high; it is rare and the structure is dangerous. |
| Nether structures | |||||
| Rib | Nether Fortress | Loot a Nether Fortress chest. | About 6.7% per chest in commonly cited data. | Netherrack | Medium to high; the Nether and fortress mobs add risk. |
| Snout | Bastion Remnant | Search the relevant bastion chest variants. | Varies by chest type, edition, and loot-table version. | Blackstone | High; Piglins and Piglin Brutes make bastions dangerous. |
| Strongholds and End structures | |||||
| Eye | Stronghold | Search stronghold chests. In Java’s documented loot behavior, a stronghold library chest guarantees one Eye Template; other stronghold chests can also contain it. | Not usefully represented by one universal per-structure number. | End Stone | High; first locate a stronghold and then explore it. |
| Spire | End City | Loot an End City chest. | Varies by edition and loot-table version. | Purpur Block | High; End Cities are distant and guarded by Shulkers. |
| Trail Ruins archaeology | |||||
| Wayfinder | Trail Ruins | Brush Suspicious Gravel with a Brush. It is not normal chest loot. | Depends on archaeology generation; no single chest percentage. | Terracotta | Medium to high; locating ruins and identifying suspicious gravel takes time. |
| Raiser | Trail Ruins | Brush Suspicious Gravel with a Brush. | Depends on archaeology generation; no single chest percentage. | Terracotta | Medium to high. |
| Shaper | Trail Ruins | Brush Suspicious Gravel with a Brush. | Depends on archaeology generation; no single chest percentage. | Terracotta | Medium to high. |
| Host | Trail Ruins | Brush Suspicious Gravel with a Brush. | Depends on archaeology generation; no single chest percentage. | Terracotta | Medium to high. |
| Trial Chambers | |||||
| Bolt | Trial Chamber | Open standard Vaults and claim their rewards. Bolt was added with the 1.21 Trial Chambers content. | Varies with vault loot tables and edition. | Block of Copper | Medium to high; standard Trial Chamber combat is the gate. |
| Flow | Trial Chamber | Open Ominous Vaults for their rewards. Flow follows the Ominous Vault loot path in the documented Java 1.21 design. | Varies with Ominous Vault loot tables and edition. | Breeze Rod | High; Ominous Trials are more demanding than standard chambers. |
The Trail Ruins templates—Wayfinder, Raiser, Shaper, and Host—are the four archaeology patterns. The key distinction is that you must brush Suspicious Gravel rather than open a chest. Similarly, Tide should not be described as an Ocean Monument chest reward: the relevant source is the Elder Guardian.
Every trim material and color
The item in the Smithing Table’s third slot supplies the color. These are the 11 current vanilla materials:
| Trim material | Item placed in the Smithing Table | Approximate visual result | Practical note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Iron | Iron Ingot | Light gray | Usually a restrained, low-contrast choice. |
| Copper | Copper Ingot | Orange-brown | Useful for warm industrial or Copper Age themes. |
| Gold | Gold Ingot | Yellow-gold | Strong thematic fit for Nether and treasure-themed sets. |
| Lapis | Lapis Lazuli | Blue | The trim-material label is Lapis, although the item is named Lapis Lazuli. |
| Emerald | Emerald | Green | Fits forest, village, and nature-themed armor. |
| Diamond | Diamond | Cyan or pale blue | Often contrasts well with dark armor. |
| Netherite | Netherite Ingot | Dark gray | Expensive and usually subtle, especially on already-dark armor. |
| Redstone | Redstone Dust | Red | Useful for high-contrast technical or Nether designs. |
| Amethyst | Amethyst Shard | Purple | Works well for End, magic, and Deep Dark themes. |
| Quartz | Nether Quartz | White or cream | A bright, high-contrast option on Netherite. |
| Resin | Resin Brick | Amber-orange | Resin Brick is the ingredient; Resin Clumps and Blocks of Resin are not interchangeable trim inputs. |
The first 10 materials arrived with the original armor-trim system. Resin Brick became a trim material in Java 1.21.4 and Bedrock 1.21.50 through The Garden Awakens, as documented in the Java 1.21.4 announcement and Bedrock 1.21.50 notes.

Color contrast can change depending on the underlying armor material and whether the pattern is on a helmet, chestplate, leggings, or boots. A color that looks vivid on Netherite may be understated on Iron or Copper armor. The only reliable way to choose is to use the Smithing Table preview before consuming the template.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoosing the best armor trim combination
There is no mechanically best pattern or color. A trim cannot make armor stronger, improve knockback resistance, increase durability, or add an enchantment. Choose based on visibility, theme, acquisition difficulty, and resource cost.
| Goal | Pattern ideas | Color ideas | Why it works |
|---|---|---|---|
| High contrast on Netherite | Silence, Ward, Spire | Quartz, Diamond, Amethyst, Gold, or Resin | Bright colors stand out against dark Netherite. |
| Nether or Piglin theme | Snout or Rib | Gold, Quartz, Redstone, or Copper | Warm colors complement bastion and Nether aesthetics. |
| Ocean theme | Tide or Coast | Lapis, Diamond, Copper, or Quartz | Blue shades reinforce the ocean theme, while Copper creates contrast. |
| End theme | Spire or Eye | Amethyst, Diamond, or Quartz | Purple, pale blue, and white suit End builds. |
| Deep Dark theme | Ward or Silence | Amethyst, Redstone, or Quartz | Dense patterns and sharp color contrast fit the sculk environment. |
| Trial Chamber trophy | Bolt or Flow | Copper, Resin, Diamond, or Amethyst | Combines the newest patterns with colors associated with the trial content. |
| Subtle everyday set | Coast, Sentry, or Wild | Iron or Netherite | Produces a quieter design for players who do not want bright accents. |
Netherite has two separate roles that are easy to confuse. It can be the base material used to make Netherite armor, or it can be the trim material used to create a dark gray decorative line. Applying a Netherite trim to Netherite armor does not add another durability or protection upgrade.
The same applies to resource cost. Netherite Ingots are expensive as a color choice, while Copper, Quartz, Redstone, Resin Brick, and Iron may be easier to collect depending on the stage of a world. A common template with a color you like is often more practical than spending time hunting Silence simply because it is rare.

Armor trims began with the Trails & Tales updates, but the current list was expanded after 1.20. Use edition-specific version labels rather than treating every release as one universal Minecraft 1.21 update.

| Feature | Java Edition | Bedrock Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Original armor trims | 1.20, Trails & Tales | 1.20.0, Trails & Tales |
| Trail Ruins templates, Ward, and Silence | 1.20 | 1.20.0 |
| Bolt and Flow | 1.21 | Added through the 1.20.80 / 1.21 feature line, with edition-specific rollout details |
| Resin Brick as a trim material | 1.21.4 | 1.21.50 |
| Copper Armor | 1.21.9 | 1.21.111 |
For official feature timing, compare the Bedrock Trails & Tales notes, Bedrock Armored Paws notes, the Java Copper Age release, and the Bedrock Copper Age release.
Old 1.20 articles commonly list 16 patterns and 10 materials. That count predates Bolt and Flow, which added two patterns, and Resin Brick, which added an 11th material in later versions. If you are playing a pre-1.21 or pre-Garden Awakens version, your available list is smaller.
Bedrock duplication differences
The seven-Diamond duplication layout is the same basic idea, but Bedrock accepts additional matching blocks for several templates:
- Dune: Sandstone, Smooth Sandstone, Cut Sandstone, or Chiseled Sandstone.
- Tide: Prismarine, Prismarine Bricks, or Dark Prismarine.
- Spire: Purpur Block or Purpur Pillar.
- Bolt: Block of Copper or Waxed Block of Copper.
These alternatives should not be used as Java instructions. Loot odds also should not be copied between editions without checking the relevant loot table. A claim such as 1.2% or 16.7% should always be read as an approximate rate for a particular container and version, not a guarantee for every world.
Java command example
Players using commands do not need to find or duplicate a template, but Java and Bedrock command syntax is different. In current Java releases using item components, a command in this form creates a Netherite Chestplate with an Amethyst Silence trim:
/give @p minecraft:netherite_chestplate[minecraft:trim={material:"minecraft:amethyst",pattern:"minecraft:silence"}] 1
This is a Java-only example and should be checked against the exact Java release before use. Bedrock does not use the same inline item-component syntax. The Minecraft Wiki custom-trim command reference provides the technical context for Java item components.
Important edge cases
Can one template trim a whole armor set?
No. Each application consumes the template, so a four-piece set normally needs four copies. Duplicate the first copy before using it. The duplication recipe is renewable, but not free: every extra copy costs 7 Diamonds and the matching duplication material.
Can you use a duplicated template?
Yes. A duplicated template works exactly like the original. The output of the Crafting Table recipe is two usable copies; it is not a decorative replica or a damaged item.
Can trims be changed or removed?
You can change an applied trim by applying another armor-trim template at a Smithing Table. That replaces the visible pattern and color, and the new template is consumed.

For returning an item to a completely untrimmed state, do not rely on an untested grindstone instruction. Removal behavior should be checked in the exact Java or Bedrock version being played. If preserving the original appearance matters, keep an untrimmed spare armor piece and duplicate rare templates before experimenting.
Are armor trims renewable, craftable, or tradeable?
After finding the first copy, an armor-trim template is effectively renewable through duplication. However, vanilla survival has no recipe that creates the first copy from nothing: the duplication recipe requires an existing template. The acquisition sources in the table remain necessary for the initial discovery.
Do trims work on Elytra, horse armor, wolf armor, or shields?
Not as ordinary player armor-trim targets in the vanilla system described here. The supported armor slots are helmet, chestplate, leggings, and boots. Add-ons, mods, or edition-specific changes can introduce different behavior, but that should not be presented as a standard Java-and-Bedrock survival mechanic.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Is Resin Brick the same as Resin Clump or a Block of Resin?
No. The accepted trim ingredient is specifically Resin Brick. Having Resin Clumps or a Block of Resin does not substitute for the required trim material.
What is the difference between Bolt and Flow?
Bolt is the Trial Chamber pattern associated with standard Vault rewards and is duplicated with a Block of Copper in Java. Flow is associated with Ominous Vault rewards and is duplicated with a Breeze Rod, making it the only current armor-trim template whose duplication ingredient is an item rather than a block.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many armor trims are in Minecraft?
Current vanilla versions after the Bolt and Flow additions have 18 armor-trim patterns. Older 1.20-only versions and guides may list 16. Netherite Upgrade is a Smithing Template but is not one of the 18 cosmetic armor patterns.
What is the rarest armor trim?
Silence is commonly cited as the rarest current armor-trim template by per-chest generation chance, at about 1.2% in commonly referenced current data. The exact result depends on edition, version, chest type, and loot-table changes, so it is not an absolute probability for every world.
How many trim materials are there?
There are 11 current vanilla trim materials: Iron, Copper, Gold, Lapis, Emerald, Diamond, Netherite, Redstone, Amethyst, Quartz, and Resin. Resin Brick is the item used for the Resin color.
Do armor trims increase protection?
No. Armor trims are cosmetic. They do not increase armor points, toughness, durability, knockback resistance, enchantments, or damage.
Can armor trims be duplicated?
Yes. Place 7 Diamonds, one existing template, and its matching duplication material in the Crafting Table recipe. The result is 2 copies. Flow is unusual because it uses a Breeze Rod rather than a block as its matching material.
Can you trim leather armor and Copper Armor?
Current versions support leather armor and the four Copper Armor pieces in the version scope covered by this guide. Very old snapshot or pre-Copper Age information may say otherwise.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Can you trim an Elytra?
Not through the ordinary vanilla armor-trim system. The standard targets are helmets, chestplates, leggings, and boots. Elytra, horse armor, wolf armor, and shields are separate equipment systems.
Are Java and Bedrock armor-trim recipes identical?
The three-slot application process and seven-Diamond duplication recipe are broadly the same, but Bedrock accepts extra duplication inputs for Dune, Tide, Spire, and Bolt. Loot probabilities and version availability can also differ.
Why does my Smithing Table show no output?
Check that the template is an armor-trim template, the armor is a supported helmet, chestplate, leggings, or boots item, and the third slot contains an accepted trim material. A Netherite Upgrade template, an unsupported equipment item, or a block used instead of the color item will leave the output empty.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Find the pattern you want, duplicate it before using it, and remember that the template chooses the design while the third Smithing Table ingredient chooses the color. Current vanilla content includes 18 patterns and 11 materials, but Bolt, Flow, Resin Brick, Copper Armor, and several Bedrock recipe alternatives are absent from older guides. No trim is stronger than another: the best combination is the one that fits your armor, theme, budget, and version.
