In current Java Edition, craft a standard Minecraft boat with five planks of one wood type in a U-shape on a crafting table—no shovel is required. Add one chest to any boat in the crafting grid to make a chest boat with 27 storage slots; it still carries one entity. Wood changes the appearance, not the standard boat’s function, while bamboo produces a raft instead of a wooden boat.

How to make a boat in Minecraft
A standard boat costs five wooden planks. All five must be the same wood type, and the recipe is made in a 3×3 crafting table rather than the 2×2 inventory grid.

Oak, spruce, birch, jungle, acacia, dark oak, mangrove, cherry and pale oak planks each produce the matching boat. Do not combine types: an oak-and-spruce set leaves the output slot empty.

Crafting steps
- Open the crafting table to display its 3×3 grid.
- Choose five planks of one wood type. Check that the stack is not made from mixed woods.
- Put one plank in each side cell of the middle row.
- Put one plank in all three cells of the bottom row.
- Take the boat from the output slot.
The current Java recipe uses planks only. A wooden shovel was added during the boat overhaul in snapshot 15w41a, associated with the 1.9 development cycle, and the original five-plank recipe was later restored. The exact version that removed the shovel is not established, so a modern Java boat recipe showing a shovel is outdated.
Java and Bedrock differences
The no-shovel instruction above is specifically for current Java Edition. One Bedrock guide says Bedrock still requires a wooden shovel, but that edition-specific requirement has not been independently verified here. If the five-plank pattern produces no boat in Bedrock, check the recipe book for the version you are running rather than assuming the Java recipe applies unchanged.

Every standard wood type has a visually matching boat. The crafting shape remains the same, and guides describe the standard boats as functionally identical apart from appearance.

What the wood choice changes
Wood determines the model and color of the item you craft. It does not create separate standard-boat capabilities: the guides covering these variants describe their function as identical. Select a type for its look or for the planks you already have available.

Bamboo is the special case. Five bamboo planks in the same U-shape make a bamboo raft, not an item named “bamboo boat.” The raft follows boat behavior, so use the same recipe logic while expecting the raft result.
Why a mixed-wood recipe fails
The boat recipe checks the material family as well as the shape. Five correctly positioned planks are not enough if the cells contain different wood types. For example, replacing one oak plank with spruce leaves the output empty. Remove the mixed stack and refill every plank cell from a single wood type.
How to make a chest boat
A chest boat is made by combining any completed boat with one chest. The recipe is shapeless: the boat and chest can occupy any two cells in the crafting grid, and the result keeps the boat’s original wood type.
Materials and total plank cost
- One boat, made from five planks
- One chest, made from eight planks
That is 13 planks in total when you craft both items from raw planks. The chest itself uses eight planks around an empty center:

Chest-boat crafting steps
- Craft a standard boat or bamboo raft using the appropriate five-plank U-shape.
- Craft a chest from eight planks, leaving the center cell empty.
- Open a crafting grid.
- Place the boat and the single chest anywhere in the grid; their positions do not matter.
- Collect the chest boat from the output slot.
If you start with a spruce boat, the result is a spruce chest boat; an oak boat produces an oak chest boat, and so on. The combination is not restricted to a particular wood pairing.

A chest boat adds 27 inventory slots. It still seats one entity, so adding storage does not turn it into a multi-seat vehicle. The standard boat has no built-in chest inventory, while the chest boat provides the 27-slot storage space.
Can you separate it again?
No recipe reverses a chest boat into its original boat and a separate chest. Treat the conversion as one-way for crafting purposes. If you need both items independently, craft a new boat and a new chest rather than expecting the chest boat to split.

Which one should you craft?
- Choose a standard boat when you need the basic boat item and do not need onboard storage. It uses only five planks.
- Choose a chest boat when the additional 27 slots are worth spending a boat and an eight-plank chest. The passenger capacity remains one entity.
- Choose a bamboo raft when you want the bamboo-material variant. It follows the boat-style recipe and behavior but is named a raft.
Troubleshooting boat crafting
The output slot is empty
- Inspect all five plank cells. A mixed set such as oak plus spruce is invalid.
- Check the pattern: both side cells of the middle row and all three bottom cells must be filled; the center cell and top row must be empty.
- Move the recipe to a crafting table. A 2×2 inventory grid cannot hold the required 3×3 U-shape.
- In Bedrock, check the edition’s recipe book if the Java pattern does not work, because the shovel requirement is reported differently by at least one guide and is not confirmed here.
The result is a raft instead of a boat
That is expected when the five inputs are bamboo planks. Bamboo uses the same U-shape but produces a bamboo raft. Replace the inputs with one conventional wood type if you specifically need a named wooden boat.

The chest boat takes its appearance from the boat input, not from a separate chest wood pairing. Recraft the base boat in the desired wood type, then combine that boat with a chest.
The chest boat has no extra passenger seat
The chest is storage, not an additional seat. Both the ordinary boat and chest boat seat one entity.
You want the original boat and chest back
There is no recipe that reverses the chest boat. Plan the conversion before combining the items, and craft replacements if you need separate components.

Version notes worth checking
The shovel in old boat recipes
The shovel-shaped ingredient is associated with the historical 1.9 boat overhaul. A wooden shovel was added in snapshot 15w41a and later removed, with the original five-plank recipe restored. Because the exact removal version is not confirmed, a recipe image that includes a shovel may describe an old snapshot or a different edition.

When chest boats were introduced
Published references disagree about the chest boat’s release: one identifies version 1.9, while another identifies 1.19. That conflict is unresolved, so do not use either version as a definitive release marker. In a version-sensitive world, the in-game recipe book is the safest check for whether the item is available.
Newer wood variants
Mangrove boats are associated with 1.19, cherry boats with 1.20, and pale oak boats with 1.21.4. Older worlds or editions may not expose a newer wood’s boat until the corresponding content is available.
A reliable crafting checklist
- Confirm your edition and version, especially if a shovel appears in the displayed recipe.
- For a standard boat, gather five planks of exactly one wood type.
- Use a crafting table and place the planks in the U pattern.
- For a bamboo result, use bamboo planks and expect a raft.
- For storage, craft a chest with eight planks, then combine it with the finished boat in any grid positions.
- Before combining, remember that a chest boat has 27 slots, seats one entity and cannot be split back into its components by recipe.
The essential rules are simple: one wood type for the five-plank boat, no shovel in the current Java recipe, and one chest added shapelessly for 27 slots of storage.
