It depends on which generation you mean. If you mean the move from PS4 and Xbox One to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, the answer is broadly yes: PS5 runs the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games, while Xbox Series X|S runs most Xbox One games and a selected catalogue of Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles. Disc format, console model and individual-game support still matter.
If you mean consoles that will follow PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, there is no complete cross-platform answer yet. Microsoft has announced a future Xbox project called Project Helix and says it is designed to play Xbox console and PC games, with a commitment to keeping four Xbox generations playable. Microsoft has not published a final title-by-title list or consumer launch date. Sony has not established a backward-compatibility policy for a PS5 successor in the official material available here.

First, define “next generation”
People use “next-generation consoles” in two different ways:

- Future transition: a console released after PS5 or Xbox Series X|S. Xbox’s future direction has been announced in broad terms, but detailed support remains unknown; PlayStation’s successor policy is not established.
That distinction changes the answer from “yes, with exceptions” to “not confirmed.” A game working on PS5 or Series X today does not automatically prove it will run on every later console.

PS4 games on PS5: what works
Most of the PS4 library is playable
PlayStation says the overwhelming majority of its more than 4,000 PS4 games can be played on PS5. That is broad platform compatibility, not a promise that every title behaves identically. Some games can have unavailable functionality, errors or unexpected behavior. PlayStation recommends trying a game before buying add-ons for it when compatibility is important.
Compatibility normally means running the PS4 edition on PS5. It does not mean the game has automatically become a native PS5 edition with new graphics, frame rates or features.
Digital PS4 purchases
A PS4 digital purchase is available in your PlayStation library after you sign in with the account that owns it. From there, you can download the supported PS4 version on PS5. Save data can be transferred according to the game and system options; PlayStation Plus cloud storage may be used for saves under the service’s terms.
PS4 discs require the right PS5 model
A physical PS4 game requires a PS5 model with a disc drive. Insert the disc, install the game and keep the disc inserted whenever the console checks ownership. A PS5 Digital Edition cannot read PS4 discs, even when the game itself is supported.

Compatibility is not the same as a PS5 upgrade
Some PS4 games offer a game-specific digital PS5 upgrade. The offer can be free or paid, depending on the publisher, edition and promotion. A disc-based upgrade still requires a disc-drive PS5, because the PS4 disc remains the ownership check. Buying or owning a playable PS4 game therefore does not guarantee access to its PS5 version.
Game Boost and feature differences
Selected PS4 games benefit from PS5’s Game Boost. Improvements vary by title; Game Boost does not give every supported game the same frame-rate, resolution or loading enhancement. Treat any improvement as title-specific rather than a system-wide conversion.
Online play across PS4 and PS5
Players using the same multiplayer PS4 game can play together when one person is on PS4 and another is running that PS4 game on PS5 through backward compatibility. This applies to that game and its available online service; it is not a guarantee that every title’s servers or matchmaking will remain active.
PS3 discs are a separate limitation
PS5 does not support PS3 game discs. PS4-to-PS5 compatibility should not be generalized to every older PlayStation format.

Xbox One games on Xbox Series X|S
Most Xbox One games work
Most Xbox One games are playable on Xbox Series X|S. Microsoft also supports selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox games through its backward-compatibility catalogue. Older-generation support is selective, so check the catalogue for the specific title rather than assuming that every Xbox 360 or original Xbox game is included.
Xbox describes more than 500,000 hours of testing and quality-standard work for its Series X|S compatibility effort. That figure describes Microsoft’s overall engineering and testing work; it does not mean every game has identical performance or that every title from an older generation is supported.
Digital Xbox games
Supported digital titles appear in the console’s install library when you sign in with the account that owns them. Select the game, install it and apply any available update. The exact version and enhancements depend on the title.

Xbox Series X has a disc drive. For a supported physical game, insert the disc and allow the console to download and install the compatible version. The disc must remain inserted whenever you play because it acts as the ownership license. A disc may trigger a download rather than running directly from the media.

Series S is digital-only
Xbox Series S cannot accept game discs. A physical Xbox One, Xbox 360 or original Xbox copy cannot be used on Series S unless you also own a supported digital licence. This is a hardware limitation, not a catalogue decision.

Compatibility versus a native upgrade
These terms describe different outcomes:

Project Helix is an announced direction, not a finished product
On March 11, 2026, Xbox Vice President for Next Generation Jason Ronald said: “Project Helix is designed to play your Xbox console and PC games, delivering leading performance and ushering in the next generation of console gaming.” Microsoft also said it remains “committed to keeping games from four generations of Xbox playable for years to come.”

Developer hardware is not a launch announcement
Microsoft said developer hardware alpha versions are planned to begin shipping in 2027. That is a development milestone for studios, not a promised date when consumers can buy the console. Software support, licensing and final hardware details can change before release.
How to interpret the four-generation commitment
The commitment is best understood as a platform policy Microsoft intends to maintain, rather than a quantified compatibility rate. No official percentage of Xbox Series X|S games guaranteed to run on Project Helix has been published. Until a supported catalogue and testing guidance appear, retain your current console if a particular game is essential.
What is known about a PlayStation successor?
The official PlayStation material establishing PS4-to-PS5 support does not establish a backward-compatibility policy for a console after PS5. There is no confirmed statement here that PS5 discs, PS5 digital licences or PS5 save data will work on a future PlayStation console.

Do not buy a PS5 game on the assumption that it will run on an unnamed successor, and do not describe future support as confirmed until Sony publishes specific hardware and software guidance.
Choosing the right edition for your library
If you own physical PlayStation games
- List the PS4 titles you want to keep playing.
- Choose a PS5 model with a disc drive.
- Check each title for compatibility warnings and any separate PS5 upgrade offer.
- Keep the disc available after installation; an upgrade does not remove the ownership check.
If you own physical Xbox games
- Use Xbox Series X, not Series S, if you need to use discs.
- Search the backward-compatibility catalogue for each Xbox One, Xbox 360 or original Xbox title.
- Insert a supported disc to start the download and installation.
- Leave the disc inserted during play.
If your library is digital
- Sign in with the account that purchased the game.
- Open the library or install list on the new console.
- Install the supported edition and check whether a separate upgrade is offered.
- Confirm save-transfer options before deleting the old-console installation.
Common assumptions that cause problems
- “Playable” means “remastered.” Usually it means the older edition runs; visual and performance changes are title-specific.
- “The disc installs, so the console owns it.” Series X and disc-drive PS5 models still require the disc as proof of ownership.
- “Series S supports backward compatibility, so it supports my discs.” Series S has no disc drive and accepts digital games only.
- “Every older Xbox game is supported.” Xbox 360 and original Xbox support is limited to selected catalogue entries.
- “A future Xbox announcement guarantees every current game.” Project Helix’s stated goal is broad, but final title-level support has not been published.
- “PS5 successor compatibility is already confirmed.” The PlayStation policy for a post-PS5 console remains unestablished in the available official guidance.
A practical answer for buying and planning
For a PS4 or Xbox One library, upgrading now is generally a safe way to keep playing: PS5 covers the overwhelming majority of PS4 games, and Series X|S covers most Xbox One games. Verify unusual titles, physical-disc requirements and upgrade pricing before you sell the old console.
For games you expect to carry into a future generation, keep the original discs, maintain access to the purchasing account and preserve saves according to each platform’s transfer or cloud-storage rules. Those steps protect your options, but they cannot create compatibility where a manufacturer has not announced it.
