What cats do in Minecraft
Cats are tameable companion mobs rather than combat pets. A tamed cat follows its owner when mobile, can be parked by switching it to a sitting state, and influences nearby creeper and phantom behavior. It does not attack hostile mobs on your behalf.
Mojang’s Village & Pillage notes record three especially useful properties: stray cats can be tamed, phantoms fear cats, and tamed cats can give morning gifts. The same notes state that collars can be dyed, allowing several cats to be identified at a glance.

Cats were added in Minecraft 1.2.1 in March 2012, according to Minecraft.net’s 2023 cat article. Modern cats are separate from the older ocelot-taming system.
Where to find stray cats
Villages
Villages are the normal source of stray cats. Search the village perimeter, alleys between houses, farms, and paths rather than looking only inside buildings. A cat that is not yet yours may wander away quickly, so keep raw fish ready before you begin an approach.

In either edition, a village that already has several cats may produce no additional strays until the local population changes. Tame cats still occupy space around your settlement, so a crowded home village can be a poor place to search for a new coat.
Swamp huts
A swamp hut generates one black cat. This is the most reliable way to target the black variant because the hut’s cat is part of the structure’s generation rather than a random village coat. Black cats can also appear under a full moon, so moon phase can help when searching outside a hut.

Swamp huts are usually isolated, and the cat may be exposed to hostile mobs or environmental hazards. Bring food for yourself, light the route, and secure the area before trying to tame it. A boat, fenced pen, or temporary enclosed room can stop the cat from wandering while you work.
How to tame a cat
Minecraft.net’s 2023 article gives the essential instruction: slowly approach a stray cat while holding raw cod or raw salmon. The cat must be calm enough to accept the fish; sprinting directly at it usually makes it flee.
- Get raw fish. Put raw cod or raw salmon in your selected hotbar slot. These are the fish used for taming; cooked fish is not the item specified by Mojang’s instructions.
- Find a stray cat. Use a village or the black cat at a swamp hut. Clear nearby hazards first if you are working at night.
- Hold the fish visibly. Select the raw cod or salmon so the cat notices the food.
- Approach slowly. Walk, avoid sprinting and jumping, and stop if the cat starts backing away. Let it come toward you when necessary.
- Feed the cat. Use the interact button with the fish. Continue feeding raw cod or raw salmon as needed.
- Confirm the tame. Hearts appear during successful taming, and a collar becomes visible when the cat belongs to you.
A collar is the practical confirmation that the process worked. If the cat still behaves like a stray and has no collar, continue the slow approach and feed it again rather than chasing it.
If the cat keeps running away
- Stop moving and let it settle before trying again.
- Do not sprint, jump repeatedly, or corner it against a wall.
- Clear hostile mobs and animals that may cause you to move suddenly.
- Use a fenced or walled space only after the cat is inside; do not trap it so tightly that you cannot approach without colliding with it.
- Keep the fish selected. Switching items while the cat is approaching can make the interaction window easy to miss.
Breeding two tamed cats
Feed raw fish to two tamed cats to produce a kitten. Bedrock’s stable behavior reference includes cat breeding with require_tame: true, confirming that untamed strays are not valid breeding parents in the vanilla Bedrock behavior. In practice, tame both adults before attempting to breed.
- Bring two adult tamed cats together. They must belong to you and be close enough to interact.
- Make sure they are mobile. Sitting cats have interaction restrictions in the cited mechanics documentation. Use the interact button to stand each cat up when necessary.
- Feed each cat raw cod or raw salmon. Use the fish on both adults.
- Wait for the kitten. A kitten appears after the breeding interaction. Its coat can follow a parent or another variant according to the game’s breeding rules.
- Park the adults again if needed. Once breeding is complete, use the sit command to keep the cats in a safe location.
Breeding is useful for expanding a safe home population, but it is not a guaranteed way to select a particular coat every time. For a specific missing variant, continue searching villages and swamp huts as well as breeding.

The cited husbandry guide lists 11 cat variants. Variant names are visual identities, not separate mob types; every tamed variant uses the same basic controls and defensive behavior.

A practical collection plan
- Start with the nearest village and tame every useful coat rather than leaving duplicates loose.
- Build a small, labeled cat area with one sitting position per collected variant.
- Visit a swamp hut specifically for the black cat if that variant is missing.
- Use breeding to expand your population and potentially obtain coats not currently nearby.
- Keep a written or in-game checklist of all 11 names so a duplicate does not look like progress.
Collecting all variants is an advancement-oriented goal. You do not need every coat to obtain the defensive benefits of cats, and a single tamed cat can already help protect a base from creepers and phantoms.
Using cats to deter creepers and phantoms
Creeper deterrence
Creepers avoid cats within the range where the cat can influence their pathing. Place several tamed cats around the outside of a base, near entrances, farms, and other locations where creepers commonly approach. A cat sitting in a secure position can still provide the intended deterrent; the important limitation is coverage, not constant following.
Phantom deterrence
Mojang’s Village & Pillage notes specifically state that phantoms fear cats. A cat near a roof, balcony, or open work area can therefore make that space less attractive to phantoms. Positioning matters: a cat sealed behind several blocks or too far from the area you are protecting cannot influence every approach.
What cats cannot do
- Cats do not attack hostile mobs for you.
- They do not replace lighting, walls, doors, or other spawn-control measures.
- Deterrence is local; one cat cannot guarantee that every part of a large base is protected.
- Cats remain vulnerable to ordinary environmental hazards, falls, fire, drowning, hostile attacks, and accidental player damage.
Use fences, walls, roofs, and safe indoor rooms for cats that are not actively being used as mobile deterrents. Sitting toggles let you park a cat away from dangerous terrain until you need it elsewhere.

Commands and controls for keeping cats safe
The exact interaction key depends on your platform, but the action is the same: use the cat to toggle sitting and standing. A standing cat can follow and reposition itself; a sitting cat stays parked. Stand it before breeding or moving it, then sit it again once it reaches the destination.
- Transport: Keep the cat standing while guiding it, using a boat or another controlled route when terrain is difficult.
- Home placement: Sit the cat on a marked block inside a protected room.
- Defense placement: Use several sitting cats at separate perimeter points rather than clustering every cat in one room.
- Identification: Dye collars so family groups, collection variants, or perimeter positions are easy to recognize.
Never leave a cat sitting beside an unguarded cliff, lava pool, open ravine, or busy redstone area. Cats can survive ordinary travel only when the route and destination are controlled.
Morning gifts and collar dye
A sleeping tamed cat may leave a morning gift, a behavior recorded in Mojang’s Village & Pillage notes. The gift is an occasional extra, not a dependable resource-generation system. Keep a cat safely housed overnight if you want it to remain available for this behavior.
Collars can be dyed. This is mainly a management feature: use different colors for cats assigned to a creeper perimeter, a phantom-sensitive roof, a breeding room, or a completed variant collection. Dye does not change the cat’s underlying defensive behavior.

Cats and ocelots are distinct mobs with different interaction rules. Mojang’s Village & Pillage notes say that stray cats can be tamed, while ocelots cannot be tamed but might start trusting a player if fed fish.

What do cats eat in Minecraft?
Raw cod and raw salmon are the fish specified for taming and breeding cats. Hold one while approaching a stray, and use it on each of two tamed adults when breeding.
Why did my cat disappear?
Check whether it was sitting in a safe location, then inspect nearby hazards and open routes. Cats remain vulnerable to environmental dangers, and an unsecured standing cat can wander away from a base.
Why are creepers still getting close?
Cat deterrence is local. Add cats around the perimeter and the specific approach routes you need to protect, and combine them with ordinary lighting and building safety. A cat hidden indoors may not influence a creeper outside.
Can I breed a stray cat?
No. Tame both parents first. Bedrock’s stable behavior reference explicitly requires tame parents for cat breeding.

Breeding can expand the population and may produce another listed variant, but the kitten’s appearance follows the game’s breeding rules. Keep searching villages and the swamp-hut source for coats that remain missing.
Are cats better than ocelots as pets?
For a pet, collar, kitten, creeper deterrent, or phantom deterrent, yes: those are tamed-cat features. Ocelots may trust a player after fish feeding but are not directly tameable as cats in the current system.
